BACKGROUND Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, a major migratory rice pest in Asia, shows significant variation in female sex pheromone composition across geographical regions. This study investigated the distribution and seasonal dynamics of two distinct sex pheromone strains in populations across China to improve monitoring accuracy and understand migration patterns. RESULTS Chemical analysis identified two pheromone types: an aldehyde-alcohol blend (AA) dominated by Z13-18:Ald (4.30 ± 2.68 ng per female), and an acetate ester blend (AE) dominated by Z11-16:Ac (5.04 ± 0.72 ng per female). Among 339 females examined, the AE strain was substantially more prevalent (80–97%) in most regions. Ovarian development ranged from levels 2 to 4, with mating frequencies of 0–5 times, indicating the prevalence of the AE strain in natural populations. Large-scale pheromone trapping monitoring across 106 sites outlined distinct geographical and seasonal distributions in males. Southern regions exhibited higher AE proportions in July–August, whereas northern areas, particularly the middle–lower Yangtze provinces, were dominated by the AA strain in August–September, often accounting for 60–90% of captures. For example, AA was >90% in Nantong, whereas AE remained at >80% in Jingzhou. Seasonal shifts occurred in some southern locations, such as Chongzuo, where AE surpassed AA by September. CONCLUSION Two pheromone strains of C. medinalis co-occur across China with geographically and seasonally structured distributions. The AE strain predominates overall, but both strains must be used concurrently for accurate population monitoring. This pheromone polymorphism is likely to reflect different geographical origins of migratory populations and provides a foundation for region-specific pest management strategies. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Plant viruses such as tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) pose a serious threat to global crop production, making the development of highly effective antiviral agents an urgent task in agricultural plant protection. RESULTS Three series of pyrazoleamide-piperidine derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their antiviral activities against TMV were evaluated. Compounds H9 and X18 exhibited protective half-maximal effective concentration (EC 50 ) values of 69.52 mg L −1 and 82.27 mg L −1 , respectively, while the EC 50 for commercial antiviral agent ningnanmycin is 81.73 mg L −1 . TMV-GFP imaging revealed that compound H9 pretreatment more effectively delayed systemic TMV infection. The mechanism of action study indicated that compounds H9 and X18 enhanced the activity of defense enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). Additionally, they mitigated chlorophyll degradation and promoted chlorophyll production. Treatment with compound H9 up-regulated genes such as PR1 , activating systemic acquired resistance in plants and enhancing TMV resistance. Concurrently, treatment with compound X18 up-regulated genes including CYP73A , CYP98A , and PAL , activating the phenylpropanoid pathway to promote lignin synthesis and enhance the cell barrier, thereby inhibiting TMV infection. These reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) results were consistent with transcriptomic data. CONCLUSION Compounds H9 and X18 enhanced TMV resistance through distinct mechanisms, informing the development of novel green antiviral agents. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Urea is frequently tank-mixed with pesticides, yet whether it functions as a conventional spray adjuvant or acts at another stage of droplet evolution remains unclear. This study examined how 0–2.0 wt% urea affects spray liquid properties, atomization, impact, wetting, evaporation, and final deposition. RESULTS Urea caused only minor changes in equilibrium surface tension and viscosity. Across nozzle and pressure conditions, changes in volume median diameter were generally within ±3%, while impact, wetting, and the time required for 90% volume loss (55–60 min) were not appreciably altered. In contrast, dried residue morphology changed markedly. In the sodium-fluorescein-containing 32% thifluzamide–tebuconazole suspension concentrate system on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which contained sodium fluorescein, the addition of 0.5 wt% urea increased the central integrated fluorescence fraction from 21.90% to 26.40% (+4.50 percentage points) and the center-to-periphery ratio from 2.24 to 2.87. Similar central enrichment occurred at 1.0–1.5 wt%, whereas 2.0 wt% reduced the fraction to 20.66%. More continuous residues were also observed qualitatively on maize and rice leaves. CONCLUSION Urea primarily modifies deposition during late-stage droplet drying rather than through atomization or wetting. The observed redistribution is consistent with evaporation-driven solute enrichment, precipitation, and crystallization. These findings identify 0.5 wt% as the lowest tested concentration producing high central enrichment in the examined formulation and establish late-stage drying as a distinct target for improving pesticide deposit spatial distribution, although biological efficacy requires further verification. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND The ladybird Harmonia axyridis is an important predatory natural enemy, and during both predation and oviposition it encounters interference from the black garden ant Lasius niger , as ants aggressively defend aphid colonies and thereby restrict ladybirds' access to suitable foraging and oviposition sites. However, the role of L. niger cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in mediating the behavioural responses of H. axyridis remains unclear. RESULTS Our results show that H. axyridis exhibits significant avoidance behaviour toward both L. niger and its CHCs. Chemical and electrophysiological analyses identified undecane as an electroantennographic detection (EAD)-active CHC component that elicited avoidance responses in behavioural assays. Behavioural assays showed that undecane significantly reduced both the predation of the aphid Aphis gossypii and oviposition by H. axyridis . CONCLUSION This study provides evidence that H. axyridis avoids the CHCs of L. niger , particularly undecane, and that this behaviour modulates its feeding and egg-laying activities. These findings advance our understanding of chemically mediated interactions between natural enemies and competitors in multitrophic systems and provide a basis for future studies evaluating how ant-derived chemical cues may influence biological control under more realistic field conditions. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Natural products have been and continue to be a significant resource for developing environmentally friendly pesticides with distinctive structures and mechanisms. Lansiumamide B (LB), a cinnamamide compound extracted from Clausena lansium seeds, has served as the lead compound for the design and synthesis of a series of cinnamamide derivatives. The fungicidal activity of these derivatives has been evaluated. RESULTS The majority of the proposed compounds displayed moderate to considerable antifungal efficacy against the tested pathogenic fungi and oomycetes, with some exhibiting broad-spectrum fungicidal activities. Compound B 26 showed excellent activity against Colletotrichum orbiculare in vitro , with a median effective concentration (EC 50 ) value of 0.36 μg/mL, better than positive control boscalid (0.95 μg/mL) and the lead compound LB (60.18 μg/mL). In vivo , B 26 also exhibited greater fungicidal activity against C. orbiculare than boscalid and LB. Furthermore, the study found that the mycelium cell wall was damaged after treatment with compound B 26 through observation of the mycelial morphology and ultrastructure of C. orbiculare . Consequently, mycelial growth was inhibited. CONCLUSION The results indicated that cinnamamide compounds containing a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline moiety represent a novel class of antifungal active scaffold, and compound B 26 has the potential to be developed into a new type of fungicide. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Plant bacterial diseases have precipitated a global crisis in human health and food security. In agriculture, diseases such as the rice white-leaf blight can cause considerable reduction in crop yields and, in extreme cases, complete crop failure. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel green pesticides with innovative modes-of-action (MoAs). RESULTS A series of zingerone derivatives with an isopropanolamine skeleton were designed and their quorum-sensing effects were estimated using biomimetic strategies. The results showed that the novel compound A 12 effectively inhibits the growth of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae [ Xoo , median effective concentration (EC 50 ) = 3.55 μg mL −1 ], Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri ( Xac , EC 50 = 3.23 μg mL −1 ) and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola ( Xoc , EC 50 = 7.48 μg mL −1 ). Molecular docking results revealed that A 12 forms multiple interactions with the RpfF protein, while fluorescence titration experiments further verified the interaction between them. Additionally, A 12 was found to effectively inhibit Xoo biofilm formation, extracellular polysaccharide production and other virulence factors. In vivo pot experiments revealed that compound A 12 exhibited excellent curative (53.59%) and protective (57.65%) activity against Xoo . In conclusion, compound A 12 's primary MoA is achieved by affecting the formation of biofilms and the expression of various virulence factors, including related virulence genes. CONCLUSION In summary, this study highlights that compound A 12 displays notable quorum-sensing sensing activity. The advancement of novel quorum-sensing inhibitors through biomimetic strategies offers promising avenues for future research. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is one of the world's foremost agricultural pests. Recently, we found that a wild relative of tobacco ( Nicotiana benthamiana ) demonstrates remarkable attractiveness and nearly 100% lethality towards whiteflies. Therefore, it can act as a dead-end trap crop for whitefly control in the field. However, the underlying mechanism of the significant attractiveness of N. benthamiana towards whiteflies is unclear. RESULTS Binary-choice assays and olfactory experiments showed that compared to common tobacco ( N. tabacum ), the volatile of N. benthamiana has a greater attraction to whiteflies. Then we analyzed and compared volatiles from these two Nicotiana species by thermal desorption-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD-GC–MS). We identified 16 chemical compounds that are more abundant in N. benthamiana than in N. tabacum. Seven compounds were further tested with olfactometer assays and we found that, among them, undecane strongly attracted whiteflies. Further experiments revealed that even 0.005 μg mL −1 undecane is attractive to whiteflies. We also silenced the genes that may influence the biosynthesis of undecane and found the production of undecane decreased after silencing NbCER3 , and that N. benthamiana plants with less undecane lost their attraction to whiteflies. In addition, we found that applying 0.005 μg mL −1 undecane on yellow sticky traps can increase the number of stuck insects on the traps by ≈40%. CONCLUSION Undecane from the volatile of N. benthamiana is a critical chemical signal that attracts whiteflies and NbCER3 involved in the biosynthesis of undecane. Undecane may be used to improve the efficiency of yellow sticky traps for whitefly control. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Insect glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play a crucial role in insecticide detoxification. However, there remains a distinct lack of information regarding the role of GSTs in the detoxification of Tolfenpyrad (TFP) in insects. RESULTS Real-time quantitative PCR showed significant upregulation of PxGSTs after exposure to TFP for 6 h. An in vitro inhibition assay showed that TFP could inhibit PxGSTδ, PxGSTε and PxGSTσ, and the most pronounced inhibitory effect was on PxGSTσ. Metabolism assays displayed that PxGSTσ was superior to other test PxGSTs in metabolizing TFP. The molecular docking of TFP and PxGSTσ revealed that the H-bond provided by the sidechains of Tyr107 and Tyr162 were key to the detoxification of TFP by PxGSTσ. Further tests using mutant PxGSTσ proteins at the sites of Tyr107 (PxGSTσY107A) and Tyr162 (PxGSTσY162A) corroborated that the individual replacement of Tyr107 and Tyr162 could greatly weaken the binding and metabolic abilities to TFP. CONCLUSION Metabolic interactions between the Plutella xylostella (L.) GSTs (PxGSTs) and TFP were deciphered. This study illustrates the molecular metabolism mechanism of PxGSTσ towards TFP and provides theoretical underpinnings for the design and optimization of novel TFP-like insecticides. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

BACKGROUND Synthetic insecticides have been widely used for pest control but cause environmental issues such as pesticide residues, soil contamination, and resistance. As a result, there is a need for eco-friendly alternatives. Essential oils (EOs) are renewable, biodegradable, and non-persistent, making them promising candidates for natural insecticides. This study explores the potential of essential oils from the heartwood of Taiwania flousiana Gaussen, sourced from Tengchong, Yunnan. RESULTS The chemical composition of T. flousiana essential oils was analyzed, displaying their diversity of chemical composition. Assessment of insecticidal activity against various pests revealed their broad-spectrum insecticidal activity. Afterwards we assessed their biochemical effects on Armigeres subalbatus , measuring esterase- α , esterase- β , SOD, LPO, and GST levels. Toxicity to non-target organisms, including Nicotiana tabacum , Danio rerio , and Apis mellifera , was also evaluated. Computational simulations identified four key bioactive compounds, with two dominant compounds isolated and characterized, laying the foundation for further studies. CONCLUSION EOs of T. flousiana exhibit a broad spectrum of insecticidal activity, coupled with a remarkably low impact on non-target organisms. This suggests they could serve as an eco-friendly substitute for synthetic insecticides. This finding is significant for developing greener pest control strategies. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and its dimerization partner ARNT are well-established regulators of xenobiotic metabolism in vertebrates, but their functional roles in insect detoxification remain poorly characterized. This study investigates the involvement of TcAhR/TcARNT in the detoxification of insecticides and plant allelochemicals in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum . RESULTS We found that the expressions of TcAhR and TcARNT were significantly induced upon exposure to imidacloprid, deltamethrin, or (−)-4-terpineol. RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated silencing of TcAhR and TcARNT dramatically increased larval susceptibility to these chemicals, and concurrently suppressed the activities of key detoxification enzymes, including P450s, CarEs, GSTs and UGTs. Conversely, treatment with the AhR agonist β-naphthoflavone upregulated TcAhR / TcARNT expression, enhanced detoxification enzyme activities, and decreased chemical susceptibility. Transcriptome analysis following TcAhR / TcARNT knockdown identified 34 co-regulated detoxification enzyme genes, the vast majority of which were downregulated. Among these, TcFE4 and TcUGT2B7 were functionally validated to be critical for detoxification, as their individual silencing significantly heightened larval chemical susceptibility. Furthermore, bioinformatic analysis revealed that 32 co-regulated genes contained potential AhR/ARNT binding motifs in their promoters, and several were physically clustered and consistently downregulated on chromosomes. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that the TcAhR/TcARNT pathway plays a central role in regulating a battery of detoxification genes in T. castaneum , thereby modulating its tolerance to synthetic insecticides and plant allelochemicals. This study provides fundamental insights into the molecular mechanisms of insect detoxification and resistance. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Various strategies have been developed to reduce pesticide usage while enhancing efficacy. However, the current formulation systems face several challenges such as complex system compositions, low encapsulation efficiency, unavoidable use of organic solvents, poor wettability and retention, and particularly the difficulty in addressing these issues simultaneously, which limits their practical applications. RESULTS An imine-based dynamic covalent phospholipid was synthesized to construct pH-responsive avermectin (PC@AVM) liposomes to achieve nanodispersion, complete wettability, efficient deposition, and precise on-demand delivery. Under neutral or alkaline conditions, AVM is released slowly from the liposomes, whereas rapid release occurs under acidic conditions. And the formed liposomes exhibit excellent storage stability and photostability. The residual rate of PC@AVM liposomes is about 30% higher than that of unencapsulated AVM after 75 h of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, because the hydrophobic AVM can be embedded in the hydrophobic regions of phospholipid bilayers to prevent photodegradation. The PC@AVM liposomes exhibit strong adhesion to leaf surfaces, resulting in exceptional rainfastness with a retention rate of nearly 90% after washing. Meanwhile, the vesicle-like liposome can strongly interact with surface microstructures/nanostructures during the high-speed impact process, thereby also suppressing splashing and ensuring complete deposition of droplets on hydrophobic surfaces. Moreover, PC@AVM liposomes show long-term insecticidal activity and exhibit excellent biosafety for environmental organisms. CONCLUSION This work provides an innovative carrier and constructs multifunctional, on-demand release pesticide liposomes, thereby potentially reducing pesticide use and promoting the development of sustainable agriculture. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Pear anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum fructicola , is a highly destructive disease that inflicts substantial economic losses worldwide. However, current antifungal agents mainly target known target proteins, and long-term use leads to increased resistance of C. fructicola . Thus, developing multitargeted antifungal agents based on new targets is an effective way to solve the problem of drug resistance. RESULTS Twenty camphor derivatives containing thiosemicarbazide groups were synthesized and evaluated for antifungal activity against C. fructicola . Among them, compound 1a [median effective concentration (EC 50 ) = 3.76 mg L −1 ] exhibited the strongest antifungal activity, superior to kresoxim-methyl (EC 50 = 9.69 mg L −1 ). The in vivo antifungal test demonstrated that 1a had better protective and curative effects against pear anthracnose than kresoxim-methyl. The toxicity results showed that 1a exhibited low toxicity to LO2 and HEK293 cell lines. Mechanistically, 1a can destroy hyphae morphology and cell ultrastructure, increase cell membrane permeability, affect the normal expression pathway of soluble proteins and destroy the normal metabolic function of phospholipase C. Additionally, the laccase inhibitory activity results showed that 1a [Median inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) = 7.14 mg L −1 ) had stronger laccase inhibitory activity than cysteine (IC 50 = 23.99 mg L −1 ). Furthermore, molecular docking studies showed that 1a interacted with laccase by forming hydrogen bonds with amino acid residues ASP444 and ARG442. CONCLUSION This study showed that compound 1a can serve as a promising multitarget fungicide candidate for controlling C. fructicola , with its targets at least including the cell membrane and laccase of the C. fructicola . © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.
