High molecular weight polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and seeding conditions are considered to have important roles in the synthesis of AgNWs. In this work, we report a versatile synthesis of AgNWs in a salt-free environment and under Ar inert atmosphere using high molecular weight PVP and seeding step during the synthetic process. The high molecular weight PVP was found to efficiently promote the preparation of AgNWs via supporting the proper growth control of AgNWs on {111} facets and selective growth on {100} facets. The seeding step facilitates the formation of seeds such as multiple twinned nanoparticles (MTPs) and single crystal seeds, which promoted the feasible formation of AgNWs. The shape and size of the synthesized AgNWs were characterized by SEM and TEM. The crystalline nature of the synthesized AgNWs was characterized by HRTEM, SAED and XRD, and their LSPR peaks were confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The conductive properties of the synthesized AgNWs were determined by preparing their thin conductive film on a PET substrate. The prepared AgNWs thin films exhibited good sheet resistance.

In order to reduce the cost of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, a metal-free N-doped carbon nanocage as ORR catalysts is prepared by using Polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide-polyethylene oxide (PEO-PPO-PEO) three-block copolymer (F127), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and Zn (OH) 2 as a carbon source, nitrogen source and the morphology retaining agent, respectively, via a self-template method. The structure and microstructure of the N-doped carbon nanocage are characterized via physical characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical properties are evaluated in an O 2 -saturated alkaline solution. The obtained sample pyrolyzed at 800 °C with 10% content of PVP (C–N-800) presents nano-hollow carbon capsule with a diameter of 100 nm and shell thickness of 8 nm, and has the maximum surface area of 978 m 2 ·g −1 . In O 2 -saturated 0.1 M KOH solution, C–N-800's onset potential, limit current density, and half-wave potential, which are 0.87 V, 5.73 mA/cm 2 @0.45 V, and 0.77 V, respectively, are close to those of commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts. Meanwhile, its electrochemical performance only loss 11.75% after 5000 cycles, showing excellent ORR catalytic performance and stability. During self-assembly of F127, the added PVP participated into the process. Pyrolysis at 800 °C would result in the complete decomposition of F127 and PVP's lipophilic. So, the metal-free N-doped carbon nanocage was obtained and behaved excellent ORR catalytic activity and stability.

Three-dimensional (3D) aerogels have attracted more and more attention in oil–water separation, due to their advantages of low density, high porosity, and large specific surface area. However, their application is greatly limited due to their hydrophilic and low adsorption properties. In this work, we report a 3D MoS2–polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) aerogel, prepared by a freeze-drying method, where PVP was used as a skeleton to support the aerogel. As a surfactant, PVP can easily attach to the surface of MoS2 nanosheets and facilitate the interconnection between nanosheets. The 3D MoS2–PVP aerogel exhibits low density, high porosity, good hydrophobicity, and excellent adsorption capacity (195–649 times). Moreover, after 30 cycles, the structure of the 3D MoS2–PVP aerogel is well kept and the adsorption capacity is still retained, at 93.5% and 92.9%, by squeezing and distillation, respectively. Therefore, the obtained 3D MoS2–PVP aerogel is a promising adsorption material and has great practical application potential in oil–water separation.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I) complexes are widely used in the medical and health field due to its strong antimicrobial properties and good biocompatibility, but their water solubility negates the possibility to be used as a wound dressing. In this work, the problem of PVP dissolving in water was solved by the method of thermally crosslinking, and it was found that the thermally crosslinked PVP nanofiber heated at 170 °C for 6 h had good liquid absorption capacity, stability and good fiber morphology. In addition, the thermally crosslinked PVP nanofiber is complexed with I 2 to endow it with excellent antibacterial properties. It has been demonstrated to have good biocompatibility through cytotoxicity and hemolysis experiments, which provides the possibility for it to be a dressing for the treatment of infectious wounds.

Attaining low-temperature sintering and high electrical conductivity is vital in the field of flexible electronics. Inks with silver oxalate as the precursor have recently received significant attention in this field; however, the high sintering temperature and long sintering time limit commercial applicability. High sintering temperature can shorten the sintering time but lead to porous and uneven film morphology; thus, reducing the conductivity. On the other hand, low sintering temperature prolongs the sintering time; thus, reducing the production efficiency. To solve the abovementioned problems, a silver composite conductive ink modified by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was prepared in this study. The ink used silver oxalate as the precursor, methanol and acetone as the solvent, and 1, 2-diaminopropane as the complexing agent, and could reduce the sintering temperature and time to 160 °C and 20 min, respectively. After sintering, the silver film showed good electrical conductivity, and low resistivity (4.56 μΩ·cm). Furthermore, the impact of sintering temperature on the surface morphology and electrical conductivity were also studied, and the results showed that PVP had a positive influence on the nucleation of silver and the microstructure of the sintered silver film.

Membranes were widely applied in the zero discharge of industrial wastewater. The improvement of nanofiltration efficiency was a persistent objective in industrial wastewater treatment. Efficient PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes were fabricated via adjusting the molecular weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and the dosage of MXene nanosheets. PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane predominantly owned a mesoporous structure with a key pore size distribution ranging from 2 to 5 nm. PVP influenced the abundant vertical and horizontal nanochannels of PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes. The lamellar structure of MXene nanosheets created tortuous pathways in the membrane and increased transport path length. They mutually determined water flux and rejection of dyes in various wastewater treatment. Methylene blue (MB) was mainly rejected through the size exclusion effect in nanochannels. MXene nanosheets supplied specific surface area, hydrophilicity and negatively charged functional groups. First-principles calculations revealed an adsorption energy of −7.89 eV, which was attributed to the strong interaction between MXene nanosheets and MB. MXene nanosheets promoted MB rejection. The optimal PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane prepared by 10,000 Da PVP and 0.008 g MXene achieved the highest water flux of 372.09 L·m −2 ·h −1 and MB rejection of 99.07% under ultra-low pressure condition of 0.02 bar. Flux recovery rate of PVP-PVDF/MXene membranes was 86.97% in MB treatment. They possessed excellent antifouling and recovery capacities. PVP-PVDF/MXene membrane was a potential candidate for application in wastewater treatment.

Achieving accurate quantification and counting of active lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is an important technical guarantee for the industrial production and application of LAB and their products. In this study, a gold nanoparticles@polyvinylpyrrolidone/sodium alginate (AuNPs@PVP/SA) hydrogel SERS sensor with outstanding stability and sensitivity was developed. Utilizing this platform as a substrate material to mitigate the “coffee ring” effect, we explored a strategy for the precise quantitative determination of mixed active LAB based on the AuNPs@PVP/SA hydrogel SERS platform and D 2 O-probed Raman spectroscopy technology. The results indicated that the SERS platform based on AuNPs@PVP/SA hydrogel exhibited excellent spectral reproducibility for LAB as a SERS substrate material, with a significantly reduced “coffee ring” effect. This strategy enabled rapid and quantitative detection of active lactic acid bacteria (LAB), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 CFU/mL. Moreover, the strategy had excellent analytical capabilities for the qualitative identification and precise quantification of different species of active LAB in actual samples, achieving an average accuracy of 98.67% with RSD values all less than 5%. It provides a potential technical support for the dynamic monitoring of relative abundance and metabolic phenomena of mixed active LAB in co-culture systems during actual industrial production. Respiratory monitoring, as a fundamental approach to assessing vital signs and health conditions, plays an irreplaceable role in early disease warning and personalized healthcare. However, conventional respiratory monitoring technologies are often limited by device rigidity and poor portability, severely restricting their use in daily monitoring. To address this issue, we propose a smart mask-based respiratory monitoring system based on a high-performance and biocompatible composite thermoelectric film (CTF). The CTF comprises electrospun polyvinyl alcohol nanofiber membrane as a flexible substrate, and screen-printed polyvinyl pyrrolidone/graphene-based conductive ink as the thermoelectric layer. Experimental results indicate that the CTF-based thermoelectric device demonstrates superior performance, characterized by a high Seebeck coefficient (20.6 μV/K), a rapid response time (0.4 s), an ultra-low detection limit (0.5 K), excellent long-term stability (200 cycles), and notable biocompatibility (cell viability: 97.5 %). In addition, the CTF exhibits excellent mechanical properties and enables non-contact sensing. By integrating CTF into a face mask and leveraging embedded systems and wireless transmission technology, respiratory signals can be effectively collected. A custom-designed convolutional neural network enables the classification of five different abnormal breathing patterns, achieving an accuracy of 97.4 %. This work offers an effective strategy for respiratory disease monitoring and holds significant potential for daily health tracking and clinical applications.

The simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is crucial for biomedical and clinical diagnostics. Herein, we present a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on a modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) functionalized with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and 3D reduced graphene oxide/pentaerythritol (3D rGO/PE). The structural and morphological properties of the composite were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical analysis demonstrated the remarkable electrocatalytic activity of 3D rGO/PE/PVP@HPMC/GCE for the oxidation of AA, DA, and UA, with peak potential separations of 214, 133, and 346 mV for DA-AA, DA-UA, and UA-AA, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited wide linear detection ranges of 4.0 µM to 1.0 mM (AA), 0.2–100 µM (DA), and 1.0–100 µM (UA), with detection limits of 0.82, 0.002, and 0.025 M, respectively. The sensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, making it a promising platform for real-sample analysis.

The performance of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) can be enhanced by creating continuous proton conduction channels. In this work, PVP-UiO-66-NH-SO 3 H nanoparticles (PUNSNPs) were prepared and filled into sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) to fabricate PUNSNPs/SPEEK composite PEMs. To further improve the performance of the PEMs, phosphoric acid (PA) was doped and a continuous nanopore network was formed in PA/PUNSNPs/SPEEK porous PEMs due to the dissolution of PUNSNPs. The PA/PUNSNPs/SPEEK porous PEMs have high PA uptake ratio (96%–117 %) and dimensional stability thanks to the anchoring effect of the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring on the PVP chains. The acid-base pairing interaction between the chains (residual ligands from PUNSNPs) inside the unique continuous nanopore structure allows PA/PUNSNPs/SPEEK = 20 % porous PEMs to have the highest proton conductivity of 0.350 S cm −1 (80 °C/100 % RH). Furthermore, the PA/PUNSNPs/SPEEK porous PEMs retained PA up to more than 80 % (80 °C, 40 % RH, 7 days). Similarly, PA/PUNSNPs/SPEEK = 20 % porous PEMs immersed in deionized water for 45 days were able to maintain a proton conductivity of more than 83 %. Finally, PA/PUNSNPs/SPEEK porous PEMs have low methanol permeability . Thus, this study provides a new method for the preparation of porous PEMs with a continuous nanopore network structure and excellent performance.

Silver nanowires have great development potential in the field of transparent electrodes, and their optoelectronic properties are closely related to the morphology and composition. During the synthesis of polyol method, the aspect ratio of AgNWs can be tailored using PVP with different molecular weights, and the diameter of AgNWs can be tuned by incorporating halides. Here, the synergistic effect of Cl − and Br − in the mixed PVP system were deeply investigated by adjusting the concentration ratio of Cl − and Br − . The growth mechanism of silver nanowires was studied by monitoring the acidity of the reaction process. It was found that under the assistance of PVP with different molecular weights, the coordination of Cl − and Br − greatly increased the activation energy of the reaction, which played a key role in the nucleation and growth of AgNWs. As a result, high-quality AgNWs with an average length of 35.7 μm and an average diameter of 67 nm were synthesized at the optimized concentration ratio of Cl − and Br − . Finally, the synthesized silver nanowires were deposited as conductive films on glass to obtain high-performance transparent electrode with a sheet resistance of 22.38 Ω/sq and transmittance of 83.95%.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a disease with high mortality which could cause an inflammatory responses such as edema and necrosis of the pancreatic tissue. Studies have proved that the excessive produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) play an important role in the pathogenesis of AP. Although progresses have been made for ROS and RNS elimination using artificial enzymes, biocompatible nanomaterials with advanced multi-enzymatic activities have been rarely studied. In this study, we constructed a simple and efficient method to fabricate a two-dimensional (2D) MoSe 2 @PVP nanosheets (NSs) as an artificial enzyme to treat oxidative stress-related diseases. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments proved that MoSe 2 @PVP NSs have good biocompatibility. Interestingly, the MoSe 2 @PVP NSs simultaneously showed the thermal durable peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase mimicking capacities, which endowed the material with good ROS and RNS scavenging abilities. The MoSe 2 @PVP NSs were engaged in treating the AP in an animal model, which led to a significant down-regulation of serum levels of amylase, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. Further H&E staining of pancreatic tissue validated the AP therapeutic effect of MoSe 2 @PVP NSs. We hope that our research will facilitate the development of multifunctional artificial enzymes for the treating of oxidative stress-related diseases.
