The effective and selective removal of heavy metal ions from sewage is a major challenge and is of great significance to the treatment and recovery of metal waste. Herein, a novel magnetic lignin-based adsorbent L@MNP was synthesized by a thiol–ene click reaction under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Multiple characterization techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confirmed the formed nano-morphology and structure of L@MNP. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature on the batch adsorption of Pb(II) by L@MNP were investigated. Due to the existence of sulfur and oxygen-containing sites, the maximum adsorption capacity of L@MNP for Pb(II) could reach 97.38 mg g−1, while the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 30 min. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively, suggesting a chemical and monolayer adsorption process. In addition, L@MNP showed a high adsorption selectivity (kPb = 0.903) toward Pb(II) in the presence of other co-existing metal ions. The experimental results also revealed that L@MNP displayed structural stability, ease of recovery under an external magnetic field, and acceptable recyclability after the fifth cycle. Considering its facile preparation, low cost and high adsorption efficiency, the developed L@MNP adsorbent demonstrated great potential in removing heavy metal ions from wastewater.

ZIF-67@CS composites were prepared by in-situ growth method. The phase and structure of ZIF-67@CS composite were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The morphology of the materials was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements demonstrated the existence of Pb(II) after the adsorption process of composite materials. The adsorption of Pb(II) by composite material conforms to Langmuir model, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity is 505.051 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can well describe the adsorption kinetic process.

Background Biochar has attracted considerable attention as a low-cost adsorbent comprised of carbon matrix and mineral for treatment of wastewater. The main purpose of this work was to manufacture CaCO 3 -rich biochars using crayfish shell as feedstock for removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution. Methods Pristine and magnetic biochars were prepared via direct pyrolysis and K 2 FeO 4 -promoted pyrolysis , respectively, and characterized by element analysis, BET, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS. Moreover, their adsorption capabilities toward Cu(II) and Pb(II) were investigated in aqueous solution. Findings A large amount of CaCO 3 was assembled on the pristine biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C, leading to 715.10 mg/g and 1682.87 mg/g adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Whereas, CaCO 3 and single phase Fe 3 O 4 were simultaneously introduced into the magnetic biochar with K 2 FeO 4 -promoted pyrolysis at 600 °C using 1/1 (g/g) ratio of K 2 FeO 4 to crayfish shell, where 417.05 mg/g and 974.10 mg/g maximum adsorption capabilities were obtained for Cu(II) and Pb(II) with 29.66 emu/g saturation magnetism, respectively. Cu(II) and Pb(II) were mainly adsorbed onto the biochars as carbonates and oxides by their interaction with CaCO 3 and carbon matrix.

At present, the functionalized Zr-based coordination polymer for heavy metal ions removal are primarily implemented via post-synthesis, and it is still a challenge to reduce the concentration of heavy metal ions to wastewater discharge standard. In this work, the 2,2′-dithiodipropionic acid modified Zr-based coordination polymer (named as Zr-DTDPA) was prepared by direct synthesis. It presented extraordinary adsorption ability in the process of removing Hg(II)/Pb(II). The optimum pH for Hg(II) and Pb(II) absorption was 4.0 and 6.0, respectively, and the saturated adsorption capacity reached 960 mg/g and 478 mg/g. The adsorption process can be exceedingly fitted by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, which indicated that chemisorption played a dominant role. Additionally, the maximum selectivity coefficient reached 21.36 × 10 5 and 5605 for Hg(II) and Pb(II). Impressively, the residual contents of Hg(II) and Pb(II) were only 1.04 μg/L and 0.34 mg/L, which respectively reached the concentration standard of Hg(II) and Pb(II) in wastewater. Zr-DTDPA was easy to be regenerated, and the removal rate of Hg(II) had only decreased by 17.15% after ten consecutive cycles. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that the adsorption performance of Zr-DTDPA toward Hg(II)/Pb(II) was primarily determined by thiol/thio groups, and the adsorption mechanism was the interaction between sulfur atoms and Hg(II)/Pb(II) ions.

The sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/reduced graphene oxide (rGO-CMC) composite hydrogel was fabricated via environmental friendly one-step hydrothermal reduction method. The morphology, pore structure and surface properties of the as-prepared sample were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurement and zeta potential analyser, respectively. To investigate the adsorption behaviour of rGO-CMC for Pb(II), effects of contact time, temperature, initial concentration and pH were studied in detail. The rGO-CMC composite before and after adsorption of Pb(II) was analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to further explore adsorption mechanism. Compared with rGO, the adsorption capacities of rGO-CMC-3 composite for heavy metals including Pb(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II) were increased to 156.85, 35.70, 21.40, 20.85 and 15.80 mg g −1 , respectively. In addition, the rGO-CMC composite formed a complete aerogel after freeze-drying, which confirms its great potential as an easily separable adsorbent to remove heavy metals in aqueous solutions.

The sensitive detection and efficient removal of heavy metal ions with high toxicity and mobility are of great importance for the environmental monitoring and control. Here, a novel SnS-decorated Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets heterostructure was synthesized via a facile hydro/solvothermal strategy. The as-prepared SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites presented impressive merits of the high surface area, mesoporous channels and fast electron transfer for the electrochemical reactions . And the synergistic interaction between SnS and Bi 2 O 3 significantly improved the “deposition-stripping” process involving electron transfer, mass diffusion and phase transition. With the unique characteristics, the SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites exhibited improved sensitivity and robust stability on the electrochemical detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with low LODs of 1.50 nM and 1.40 nM, respectively, and were successfully applied on the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water and lake water samples. Furthermore, the electrochemical removal performance towards Cd(II) and Pb(II) was achieved as well. These SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites could serve as an efficient platform on the detection and removal of heavy metal ions in environmental electrochemistry .

Composites of MOFs and aerogels (MOFACs), as a new class of nanostructured materials , attract increasing attention due to their favorable adsorption properties. Herein, UiO-66-NH 2 -CS aerogel monolith (UNCAM) was synthesized by covalent crosslinking with hierarchical structure, exhibiting effective and stable adsorption of Pb(II) ions. The aerogel monolith containing 50% MOF particles possesses a ultra-low density of 15.8 mg·cm −3 , which is mainly attributed to the highly porous structure. Meantime, UNCAM can be described more suitable by the pseudo-second-order model and shows a higher mass transfer rate. The highest Pb(II) adsorption capacity of aerogel monolith is up to 102.03 mg·g −1 (1.612 × 10 6 mg·m −3 ), which is comparable to literature reports. The adsorption of Pb(II) by UNCAM is an endothermic and spontaneous process and consistent with the Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption process belongs to monolayer adsorption and chemisorption . Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of coordination interaction between N and Pb (II) were confirmed, and the O also played a synergistic role in adsorption on a certain degree. Lastly, The UNCAM retained 90.12% adsorption ability after three cycles. This strategy may provide an effective and versatile pathway to convert the bulk MOF particles into a shapeable form and sequentially branch out their applications in pollutant treatment fields.

Heavy metals such as Pb(II) pollutions in wastewater have been a serious environmental problem. In this study, we loaded polyamide–amine (PAMAM) on the surface of magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) via one-step thiol–yne click chemistry to obtain dendritic magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs-PAMAM) with high-density amine groups for the highly efficient adsorption of Pb(II). The synthesized MHNTs-PAMAM were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which confirmed the formed nanostructures and chemical features of MHNTs-PAMAM. And batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of pH and other variables on the adsorption amount. Here, TGA shows that PAMAM grafting on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) achieves a sufficiently high graft ratio of 6.1 wt %, which ensures sufficient active adsorption sites on the surface of the composite. With the increase of the grafted PAMAM generation, the functional group density and adsorption capacity of the material also gradually increased, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the material for Pb(II) was up to 194.4 mg g–1. The adsorption kinetics agrees well with the pseudo-second-order equations, and the equilibrium data can be described by the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.940).

A low-cost and environmental-friendly sodium alginate-melamine@zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (SA-ME@ZIF-67) adsorbent was fabricated by chemical grafting and in situ growth for the removal of lead ions in wastewater. Firstly, melamine (ME) was grafted onto sodium alginate (SA) by amide reaction, and then SA-ME was dropped into a solution of calcium chloride to form hydrogel bead, and ZIF-67 was grown on the SA-ME hydrogel bead by the in situ growth method. The SA-ME@ZIF-67 adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The SA-ME@ZIF-67 adsorbent was used to effectively adsorb Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The initial concentrations of lead ions, adsorbent dose, initial pH of lead ion solution, temperature, and adsorption time for the material were optimized. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics fitted to Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 = 0.9281, 0.9420, and 0.9623 at the temperatures of 288.15 K, 298.15 K, and 308.15 K, respectively) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0.9901) respectively. According to the Langmuir model at 308.15 K, the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for Pb(II) was 634.99 mg/g. The recycling application of the adsorbent was possible as it was easily collected and reused after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. In addition, the Pb(II) in real wastewater samples has been efficiently removed using the fabricated hydrogel. The results showed that the SA-ME@ZIF-67 adsorbent had high adsorption capacity, removal efficiency, and easy recyclability for Pb(II). Graphical abstract

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received special attention from scientists owing to their excellent adsorption performance. However, the difficulty in separating MOFs from adsorbed metals following use has limited their application. A zeolitic imidazole-based MOF with broad applicability for sorption of Pb(II) is examined. In this work, a novel adsorbent employing ZIF-8/calcium alginate microparticles was prepared using sodium alginate and ZIF-8. This adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The performance of the ZIF-8@CA microparticles in adsorbing Pb(II) from a Pb(II) solution was investigated, and the impacts of the initial Pb(II) concentration, reaction time, pH, and reaction temperature on the reaction process were investigated. The results showed that ZIF-8@CA microparticles exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1321.21 mg/g at pH 5 after 120 min, and the adsorption process was found to fit the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.9856) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9999). These results showed that the adsorption of Pb(II) was an endothermic process. The regeneration experiment with ZIF-8@CA revealed that the removal efficiency of Pb(II) was greater than 80% even after five cycles.

In this study, the novel adsorbent PVA-TA-βCD was synthesized via thermal cross-linking between polyvinyl alcohol and β-cyclodextrin. The characterization methods SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS were adopted to characterize the adsorbent. The effect of pH, contact time, initial concentrations, and temperature during the adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II) onto the PVA-TA-βCD was also investigated. In a single-component system, the data fitted well to pseudo-second-order, and film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion both played important roles in the adsorption process. As for isotherm study, it showed a heterogeneous adsorption capacity of 199.11, 116.52, and 90.28 mg g −1 for the Pb(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II), respectively. Competition between the ions existed in a multi-component system; however, owing to the stronger affinity of the PVA-TA-βCD for Pb(II) relative to Cd(II) and Mn(II), the Pb(II) adsorption onto the PVA-TA-βCD was less affected by the addition of the other metals, which could be effectively explained by the hard and soft acid and base theory (HSAB). Furthermore, PVA-TA-βCD showed good reusability throughout regeneration experiments.

In this work, a biobased adsorbent (CMC-PAMA) consisting of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylic acid and polyacrylamide was prepared by a simple thermal crosslinking method for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Pb (II) from aqueous solutions. The CMC-PAMA showed excellent static adsorption capacities for MB and Pb (II) of 1611.44 mg·g −1 840.11 mg·g −1 , respectively, indicating its excellent performance on dyes dynamic removal. The adsorption performance of the as-prepared CMC-PAMA could be fitted well with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isothermal model. The adsorption mechanism between CMC-PAMA and Pb (II) was confirmed by FT-IR, XPS and ion-exchange behavior. Interestingly, CMC-PAMA showed high efficiency for separation of MB/methyl orange (MO) mixtures, low equilibrium swelling ratio (0.52 g·g −1 ) in distilled water, good stability and reusability. With those combined advantages, CMC-PAMA could find potential application in wastewater treatment.
