The commonly used multi-center initiation methods always lead to the formation of quantities of homopolymer in the surface tailoring based on reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. In this study, a monocenter redox pair constructed of silica bearing tert-butyl hydroperoxide groups and ascorbic acid (SiO 2 -TBHP/AsAc) was applied to substitute the commonly used initiation method of R-supported RAFT grafting polymerization. All the propagating radicals were restricted on the surface of solid particles during the whole procedure theoretically, resulting in a higher grafting efficiency of 95.1% combined with the “controllable” feature at 10 h. This redox pair was also used to initiate the reverse ATRP in miniemulsion successfully with a grafting efficiency of 86.3% at 10 h. The grafting efficiency obtained under this monocenter initiation method was significantly higher than that of the frequently reported surface modification by reverse ATRP and RAFT polymerization. In addition, the high-efficient surface tailoring was traced and confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and other analysis tests. The advantage of this monocenter redox pair will open a new avenue for the potential “high-efficient” surface tailoring of various materials. Graphical

Homopolymer PAN and triblock copolymer PAN- b -PMMA- b -PAN synthesized by RAFT polymerization were used to fabricate activated hierarchical porous carbon membranes by combining phase inversion , carbonization , and HNO 3 activation method; during the preparation process, a lot of micro- and meso-pores generated because of phase separation of PAN and microphase separation of PAN- b -PMMA- b -PAN. The hierarchical porous structure shortened ions transport paths and facilitated the rapid migration of electrolyte ions . When the polymer membrane was prepared by the casting solution with 5 wt% of PAN- b -PMMA- b -PAN and the electrochemical performance was tested at the current densities from 0.5 to 5 A g −1 , a high-end specific capacitance of 297.0 F g −1 and a capacitance retention of 75% were obtained in three-electrode configuration; this specific capacitance remained above 90% of initial value after 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 in 6 M KOH aqueous solution. Moreover, symmetric supercapacitors assembled with the prepared materials achieved high energy density (15.8 Wh Kg −1 ) and power density (4000 W Kg −1 ) in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 solution. The unique features and structures endowed the electrode membrane with good capacitive performance in both three-electrode and two-electrode configuration, which can be used as electrode membranes for high-performance energy storage devices and other applications.

Light-regulated polymerization has emerged as a powerful tool to control the process of polymerization. However, tuning the polymer molecular weight distribution (MWD) by light is still not well developed. Here, we present a convenient approach for controlling the MWD in reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization by exploiting an ultraviolet light-induced RAFT-hetero-Diels – Alder (RAFT-HDA) reaction with a photoenol diene. The key point in this strategy is to terminate part of the propagating chains at a specific time by the RAFT-HDA reaction. In addition, a photoenol diene with a hydroxyl group is also synthesized and successfully applied to realize this strategy, which can be further utilized for chain extension of ɛ -caprolactone ( ɛ -CL) by ring opening polymerization to prepare diblock copolymers with different MWDs. Monodisperse polymeric microspheres (uniform spherical aggregates of polymer chains with micrometer-scale dimensions) hold great promise for applications spanning materials science, biotechnology, and diagnostics. Yet, achieving simultaneous control over polymer chain growth and microsphere formation remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a high-temperature photoinitiated reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization that employs a poly(ethylene glycol)-based macro-RAFT agent to direct microsphere formation and a small-molecule RAFT agent to mediate polymer chain growth within the particles. This dual-RAFT strategy enables the synthesis of polymeric microspheres with narrow size distributions and well-defined polymers of tunable molecular weights, while the stabilizer loading can be as little as 0.1 wt %. Both polymer chain and particle growth can be temporally modulated by light on/off switching. The resulting polymers retain high end-group fidelity, allowing efficient one-pot synthesis of well-defined (multi)block copolymers with low dispersities while maintaining particle size uniformity. Furthermore, this approach provides access to nanostructured block copolymer microspheres with uniform sizes and well-defined internal morphologies, an achievement that remains elusive by conventional methods.

The migratory capacity and invasiveness of tumor cells are critically dependent on two key cellular features: lamellipodia formation at the leading edge of cells and the structural integrity of lipid rafts. Within the tumor microenvironment (TME), cholesterol (Ch), a core lipid raft constituent, is frequently observed to be overabundant. Excess Ch promotes cancer cell proliferation, enhances tumor cell motility, induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and elicits immunosuppressive effects. However, there remains a lack of targeted and effective strategies to normalize excess Ch levels in tumor lesions. Herein, we fabricated a cascade catalytic nanozyme (CHO@Cu/His-ZIF8) via in-situ mineralization of cholesterol oxidase (CHO) within L-histidine (His)-modified Cu-ZIF8. This nanozyme not only mimics the catalytic activity of natural peroxidase (POD) to achieve self-amplified reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (CHO oxidizes Ch to produce H₂O₂; the catalase-like activity of the nanozyme simultaneously decomposes partial H₂O₂ to generate O₂, which further accelerates Ch consumption by CHO; meanwhile, the POD-like activity converts H₂O₂ into highly toxic •OH), but also degrades excess Ch to disrupt lipid rafts and lamellipodia, thereby inhibiting tumor cell migration and invasion. In vivo studies confirmed that CHO@Cu/His-ZIF8 effectively accumulated at tumor sites and exhibited excellent biocompatibility. Experiments in subcutaneous tumor models, lung metastasis models, and bilateral tumor models consistently demonstrated that CHO@Cu/His-ZIF8 exerts potent and highly efficient antitumor efficacy, especially in inhibiting tumor metastasis, highlighting its promising clinical translation potential. Schematic representation of CHO@Cu/His-ZIF8 for combined treatment involving cholesterol depletion and ROS upregulation. Download: Download high-res image (181KB) Download: Download full-size image

Airborne particulate matter (PM) is a major global safety concern, significantly straining the ecological environment, human health, and economy. Filtration membranes, essential for PM removal, are challenging in achieving both high efficiency and low air resistance, resulting in a high pressure drop during efficient filtration. Herein, inspired by bubble rafts, an ultrathinnanofibrous network membrane is fabricated by transforming a liquid film of polysulfonesolution on electrospun fibrous scaffold into a single-layer network via nonsolvent-induced phase separation. Tailoring of the polysulfone concentration in the liquid film supported by the scaffold and of the phase separation process induced by flowing nonsolvent allows the construction of the single-layer network with interconnected nanofibers (diameter of ≈40 nm). Benefiting from the single-layer network, the membrane exhibits a small pore size (≈270 nm) at a high porosity of 90.3% and ultrathin thickness of ≈800 nm. Consequently, the membrane shows high efficiency (99.8% removal of PM 0.3 ) at an ultralow pressure drop (<40 Pa). Moreover, the membrane exhibits high transparency (>83%) and allows the light breeze (wind speed of 3.2 m s −1 ) to pass through easily, enabling energy-efficient applications, such as window screens. This work provides new insights into designing membranes for efficient and low-resistance filtration and separation.

A multi-responsive hydrophilic ABCBA-type pentablock copolymer, consisting of poly(ethylene glycol), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate), PDEA-b-PNIPAM-b-PEG-b-PNIPAM-b-PDEA, was synthesized by consecutive reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymerization showed all of the expected features of living radical polymerization and allowed the synthesis of copolymers with controlled lengths of the PNIPAM and PDEA blocks. Due to the multi-component and multi-functional nature of the pentablock copolymer, the solution properties can be manipulated by the changing of parameters such as temperature, pH etc. For example, the copolymer could be dissolved in acidic aqueous solution at room temperature, since the pH was below the pKa of the PDEA block, and the temperature was below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAM block. While in alkaline solution at room temperature, the copolymer self-assembled into core–shell–corona micelles, with the hydrophobic PDEA block as the core, the thermoresponsive PNIPAM block as the shell and the hydrophilic PEG block as the corona. At elevated temperatures in acidic media, the copolymer self-assembled into PNIPAM-core micelles with mixed hydrophilic PEG and pH-responsive PDEA coronas. Moreover, the self-assembly behavior of the pentablock copolymers in aqueous solution was investigated by varying the length of PDEA blocks.

This work presents a facile strategy for the generation of Fe3O4@poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-polystyrene (Fe3O4@P4VP-b-PS) magnetic polymer nanocomposites. P4VP-b-PS nanoparticles prepared by dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in methanol/water in the presence of macro-P4VP chain transfer agent was employed as templates to grow Fe3O4 on polymeric network templates. With the following addition of FeCl3 into the above polymer colloids, pyridyl moieties in P4VP block of nanoparticles could further react with Fe3+ through a coordination reaction to generate Fe3+@P4VP-b-PS nanoparticles. After the subsequent addition of FeCl2 and NH3⋅H2O, the co-precipitation reaction occurred on the surface of the polymeric nanoparticle to form Fe3O4@P4VP-b-PS magnetic polymer nanocomposites. Herein, FT-IR, XRD, TGA, XPS, TEM and VSM were applied to characterize the morphology, structure and magnetism performance of the synthesized magnetic polymeric nanocomposites.

A self-destruct temperature sensor was developed via RAFT-polymerized polyionic liquids in-situ grafted onto CNTs. • The sensor enables active burning destruction of sensitive chip information under external threats. • It exhibits ultra-fast response and recovery (0.2 s) and exceptional long-term stability at 120 °C for 6.5 h. • Temperature-triggered self-destruction was completed within 3.7 s, including 1.4 s of actual combustion. Active transient electronic systems for hardware security need to detect external threats and trigger rapid energy release. However, conventional self-destruction devices use separate sensing and energetic components, complicating device integration. Therefore, we developed a temperature-responsive device based on carbon nanotubes grafted with an energetic poly(ionic liquid) (CNTs-g-PIL). The material was prepared by immobilizing HO-CTA on acyl-chloride-functionalized CNTs, followed by reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization of [VBIM]DCA from the CNT surface. The device showed average response and recovery times of 0.43 ± 0.06 s and 0.42 ± 0.07 s, respectively. Electrical activation at 40–100 V induced rapid combustion, with flame temperatures of 467.13–1375.91 °C. Coupling the device with a logic-control circuit enabled continuous monitoring and automatic activation at 50 °C. In tests with fully packaged commercial memory chips, combustion caused localized thermal damage and functional failure within 3.7 s, with a success rate of 91.7%. This work offers a compact strategy for integrating temperature monitoring and active hardware protection. Download: Download high-res image (228KB) Download: Download full-size image

A series of POSS-functionalized liquid crystalline block copolymers (LC BCPs), PHEMAPOSS-b-P6CBMA, containing a crystalline polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) block and a mesogenic cyanobiphenyl block, were prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization for the first time and utilized to stabilize blue phase (BP) liquid crystals through facile doping. Using the advantages of both the POSS and polymer, a new strategy, which is distinct from the commonly adopted strategy for polymer stabilization of the BP, has been established. This new BP system with a wide BP range covering the typical room temperature range (i.e. 25–30 °C) leaps over intricate processing barriers, which are inevitable in conventional photo-induced polymer stabilization. In particular, improved electro-optical (E-O) properties of the BP, including lower driving voltage, lower hysteresis and a higher Kerr constant (K) compared with the common BP stabilized via photopolymerization, were obtained by optimizing the concentration of the doped LC BCP. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to evaluate the thermal properties of the LC BCPs, and the results indicated that the introduction of POSS enhanced the thermostabilities of the copolymers effectively. Such an ingenious strategy provides a brilliant and easy way to form large size BP displays and other devices that are incompatible with UV light exposure during the working process.

Novel thermoplastic fluorinated polyacrylate films possessing excellent mechanical performance are prepared by emulsion polymerization latex using adjustable amphiphilic star macro-reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (macro-RAFT) agent as surfactants in this work. First, star macro-RAFT agent equipped with six amphiphilic arms is synthesized via two-step RAFT polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA) in the presence of hexa-functional RAFT agents. The surface activities of the as-synthesized amphiphilic star macro-RAFT agents in aqueous solutions are studied. Subsequently, various fluorinated polyacrylate latexes are obtained by conducting emulsion polymerization of 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl acrylate (HFBA) and butyl acrylate (BA) using the amphiphilic star macro-RAFT agents as both RAFT agents and surfactants. The latex particle morphologies are studied by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and particle size is measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The effects of PAA segment length, HFBA/BA mole ratio, and TFEA segment length on the surface morphologies of the fluorinated polyacrylate films are illustrated by investigating the surface properties using water contact angle test and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, the elastomeric films obtained by directly casting the prepared fluorinated polyacrylate latexes show excellent comprehensive properties such as tensile strength over 4 MPa, elongation at break ≈700%, permanent deformation below 25%. Water absorption test is also provided as a reference.

Abstract In this paper, a fluorescein methacryloyl monomer (named Flu-MA) was firstly fabricated by the esterification reaction of fluorescein and methacryloyl chloride; subsequently, a novel amphiphilic fluorescent copolymer (Flu-PEG) with smart pH sensitivity was successfully prepared by RAFT copolymerizing of Flu-MA and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA). The result of 1 H NMR and FTIR implied that both Flu-MA and PEGMA monomers were successfully incorporated into Flu-PEG copolymers, the molecular weight ( M
n ) of which was about 39,800 with polydispersity index (PDI) as about 1.30. In aqueous solution, Flu-PEG copolymers could self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with about 200 nm diameters due to high water dispersibility and good fluorescence, respectively, endowed by PEGMA and Flu-MA, the fluorescence intensity of which was high sensitive to pH value of solution. More importantly, due to their high water dispersibility, excellent biocompatibility and good fluorescence, the as-prepared Flu-PEG FONs were high attractive for the application in cell imaging. Graphical abstract A novel amphiphilic fluorescent copolymer (Flu-PEG) with smart pH-sensitivity was successfully fabricated by RAFT copolymerizing of Flu-MA and PEGMA, which showed high water dispersibility, uniform size and excellent biocompatibility, making them be highly potential for bioimaging application.
