In this paper, a series of Fe-based catalysts with Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) as supports were synthesized using the sol–gel method to obtain the Fe/ZSM-5, Mn-Fe/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were examined and characterized via catalytic activity testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results showed that the Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst had the best catalytic performance compared with the other catalysts. In addition, Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 all exhibited excellent stability as well as good tolerance to SO 2 & H 2 O under the experimental conditions. Further characterization results showed that with co-doping of Cu and Mn, the amount of Mn 4+ , Cu + , Fe 3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen (O β ) on the surface of Fe/ZSM-5 increased, promoting the catalytic performance. The DRIFT studies revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism on the surface of the Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst. The Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst is a good candidate for NH 3 -SCR both in high reactivity and outstanding stability.

With the increasingly stringent requirements for the treatment of industrial nitrogen oxides (NO x ), ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH 3 -SCR) has emerged as the most widely adopted denitrification technology in industrial settings. A series of CeNbO x nano-catalyst with varying Nb compositions were synthesized via the solvothermal method for NH 3 -SCR. All the CeNbO x samples presented considerable NO x conversion, exceeding 80% within a broad temperature window of 200-350°C. In addition, the optimal sample shown high stability and strong resistance to SO 2 /H 2 O at 225°C. The influence of Nb element on structural properties of the CeNbO x samples was investigated and elucidated using multiple characterization techniques. The NH 3 -SCR process was further studied by in situ infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy ( in situ FTIR ), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which revealed that the improved NO x conversion can be attributed to the role of Nb in suppressing the crystal growth of CeO 2 , promoting the adsorption of oxygen species, increasing the distribution of Ce and improving the redox ability.

This study successfully synthesized a series of 15Ce–xTi/CG catalysts with different TiO2 loading levels by integrating hydrothermal synthesis, impregnation techniques, and subsequent microwave sintering. To comprehensively evaluate the catalytic activity, microstructure, surface properties, and reaction mechanisms of the catalysts, a range of advanced techniques was employed, including NH3-SCR testing, XRD, XPS, SEM, BET, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, and in situ DRIFTs. The experimental findings revealed that the incorporation of TiO2 significantly enhanced both the structural integrity and functional performance of the catalysts. Specifically, TiO2 facilitated stronger interactions between Ce and Ti, increased the Ce3+/(Ce3+ + Ce4+) ratio, enriched the surface acidic sites, and boosted the concentration of chemically adsorbed oxygen species. Among all the catalysts, 15Ce–6Ti/CG demonstrated superior NO conversion efficiency (exceeding 92% at 300 °C) and maintained high activity across an extensive temperature range of 250–400 °C, while exhibiting remarkable resistance to SO2 and H2O poisoning. In situ DRIFTs experiments further corroborated the coexistence of both Eley–Rideal and Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanisms, indicating that the catalytic process can proceed via multiple pathways. These results highlight the synergistic effects between Ce and Ti species, as well as the structural advantages of coal gangue as a sustainable support material, providing critical insights for the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly NH3-SCR catalysts.

HPW/Fe 2 O 3 nanorod catalyst displays excellent NH 3 -SCR performance over a broad working window. • HPW/Fe 2 O 3 exhibits higher SO 2 and H 2 O resistance compared with bare Fe 2 O 3 nanorods. • The modification of Fe 2 O 3 with HPW enriches the surface reactive oxygen species and acid sites of catalyst. • The NH 3 -SCR reaction on HPW/Fe 2 O 3 obeys the L-H and E-R routes simultaneously. Exploiting denitration catalysts that integrate exceptional low-and-medium temperature catalytic activity with superior SO 2 and H 2 O tolerance remains a core bottleneck for practical NO x abatement in industrial flue gas treatment. Here, a novel HPW/Fe 2 O 3 nanorod catalyst with highly exposed (110) facet modified by phosphotungstic acid was successfully synthesized. Compared with pure Fe 2 O 3 nanorods, the HPW/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst with a 15% phosphotungstic acid loading exhibited the most outstanding catalytic performance, delivering nearly 100% NO x conversion and N 2 selectivity within the temperature window of 250–425 °C. The characterization results revealed that the interaction between HPW and Fe 2 O 3 generated more oxygen vacancies, which significantly enhanced the low-temperature NO x conversion of HPW/Fe 2 O 3 . Meanwhile, the abundant moderately strong acid sites inhibited the over-oxidation of NH 3 at high temperatures, thereby improving the high-temperature NO x conversion of HPW/Fe 2 O 3 . The introduction of HPW significantly suppressed SO 2 adsorption on the HPW/Fe 2 O 3 surface, endowing the catalyst with favorable tolerance toward the coexistence of H 2 O and SO 2 at 250 °C. Time-resolved in-situ transient measurements and kinetic analyses disclosed that the adsorbed NH 3 species on the HPW/Fe 2 O 3 surface were capable of reducing gaseous/adsorbed NO x simultaneously, following both the Eley-Rideal ( E -R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) routes. The phosphotungstic acid-modified HPW/Fe 2 O 3 catalyst is endowed with abundant active oxygen species and moderately strong acid sites, which greatly facilitates the NH 3 -SCR reaction proceeding via both the Eley-Rideal ( E -R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) pathways. Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 catalyst with rich oxygen vacancies was fabricated. • Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 catalyst achieves 100% NO x conversion within 225 −400 °C under oxygen-enriched conditions. • The heterostructure interface induces a strong Ce(4 f)–O(2p)–Co(3d) orbital coupling and triggers electron redistribution. • The heterostructure and oxygen vacancies ensured the pathway less affected by O 2 . The development of efficient and low-cost catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO (CO-SCR) under aerobic conditions remains a critical challenge. Heterostructure catalysts, particularly those engineered at the interface between rare earth and transition metal oxides, represent a promising frontier for the CO-SCR reaction. However, a deep understanding of their catalytic mechanism and active sites remains limited. In this work, the Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 heterostructure catalyst with dispersed Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles on CeO 2 is designed and synthesized via a two-step precipitation method, serving as a model system. The optimized catalyst exhibits superior performance with 100% NO conversion across a wide temperature window (225–400 °C) and robust thermal stability, outperforming pure CeO 2 . Advanced spectral characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the heterostructure interface induces a strong Ce(4 f)-O(2p)-Co(3d) orbital coupling, which triggers electron redistribution. This unique interface environment optimizes the adsorption and activation of NO molecules and lowers the N-O bond cleavage energy, thereby enabling the high catalytic performance. This work offers a facile synthesis strategy for designing high-performance heterostructure catalysts and provides fundamental insight into the interface-driven mechanism for CO-SCR applications. Low-temperature sintering flue gas contains both nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO), requiring bifunctional catalysts for concurrent pollutant abatement. Herein, CuSmTi composite oxides with an identical nominal composition were synthesized via impregnation, mechanical grinding, and sol–gel methods to examine the effects of preparation route on their structure, surface properties, and catalytic performance in coupled NH3-SCR and CO oxidation. CuSmTi-SG exhibited the best performance, achieving >40% NOxconversion at 125 °C, complete NOxand CO conversion at 200 °C, and nearly 100% N2selectivity over 100–300 °C, with stable performance over 24 h. It possessed a higher surface area (131.4 m2g−1), pore volume (0.230 cm3g−1), and smaller TiO2crystallite size (8.5 nm) than the other catalysts. Spectroscopic analyses showed that sol–gel synthesis altered the surface electronic states of Cu and Sm species, resulting in a higher Cu+fraction and greater amounts of medium-to-strong Lewis acid sites and labile surface oxygen species. In situ DRIFTS indicated that CO oxidation proceeded predominantly via a Mars–van Krevelen mechanism over Cu+sites, whereas NH3-SCR mainly followed an Eley–Rideal pathway. CO and NH3preferentially interacted with different surface sites, resulting in limited mutual inhibition. These results demonstrate that the preparation route can modify the structure and surface chemistry of CuSmTi catalysts without changing their nominal composition, thereby affecting their performance in low-temperature NOxand CO abatement.

The catalytic performance of TiO 2 -supported VO x catalysts (VO x /TiO 2 ) in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions depends sensitively on the interactions between the support and surface metal oxides . These VO x -TiO 2 interactions have been studied for decades, and yet the effect of support properties on VO x species and their catalytic activity remains controversial. This study explores the correlation between the NO conversion activity and the specific surface area , crystalline phase (anatase or rutile), and surface hydroxyl group content of TiO 2 supports that disperse VO x species. Thermal treatments at 600–800 °C induce phase transformations of TiO 2 from anatase to rutile, leading to defective TiO 2 surfaces that promote H 2 O dissociation by lowering dissociation free energies . These transformations increase the prevalence of hydroxyl groups on the rutile TiO 2 surface, compensating for losses in the dehydration reactions during thermal treatments. These effects, along with decreased specific surface areas of thermally treated TiO 2 , lead to hydroxyl group surface densities that favour the formation of active oligomeric VO x species, which exhibit higher activity than their monomeric counterparts or aggregated V 2 O 5 crystallites . This phase-transformed rutile also shows certain activity advantages as supports compared to the initial anatase. These conclusions are derived from combined synthetic, kinetic, spectroscopic, and theoretical (density function theory calculations) approaches. They provide insights into the relationship between NO conversion activities, vanadium surface densities, and VO x species morphology; they also present a straightforward strategy to control surface VO x morphology without requiring complex synthesis protocols.

For traditional strategies to construct SO 2 and H 2 O co-resistant systems in low-temperature NH 3 selective catalytic reduction (NH 3 -SCR) catalysts, the primary challenge lies in mitigating the partial loss of redox activity at active sites. Herein, we present an approach to construct a protective system based on interface engineering principles, effectively safeguarding Cu active sites in ZnO/FeCu-SSZ-13 under SO 2 and H 2 O exposure. The core innovation stems from the creation of a strong interface effect originated from Zn-O-Al bonds formed between ZnO and the framework Al on the FeCu-SSZ-13 surface. This interface effect can regulate the electronic structure of Zn O bonds on ZnO component, producing abundant basic sites around the Cu active sites, enabling the preferential adsorption of SO 2 and its oxidation into ZnSO 4 , thereby virtually eliminating the redox ability loss of Cu active sites. As a result, ZnO/FeCu-SSZ-13 achieves exceptional low-temperature NH 3 -SCR performance, maintaining over 90 % NO x conversion even in the presence of SO 2 and H 2 O. Our work opens a new avenue for developing low-temperature NH 3 -SCR catalysts with desired SO 2 and H 2 O resistance, offering valuable insights for advancing catalytic performance in challenging reaction conditions.

A novel ultrafine Pt/Beta catalyst supported on carbon paper was prepared and applied to selective catalytic reduction of NO x by H 2 at a low temperature below 90 °C. Here, 0.8 wt.% Pt/Beta reached approximately 100 % NO conversion at 90 °C under oxygen-rich conditions (1000 ppm NO, 1 % H 2 , and 4 % O 2 ). The influence of the dispersion and particle size of Pt on the catalytic performance was investigated using Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a structure directing agent to regulate the Pt particles. The feeding amount of PVP significantly influenced the catalytic activity of the catalysts. When the feeding amount was less than 50 mg, the Pt particle size was smaller, and the dispersion was higher, providing a higher NO conversion. However, when the feeding amount exceeded 50 mg, the dispersion no longer increased, and the activity slightly decreased. N 2 physisorption (BET) confirmed that excessive PVP decreased the specific surface area, which suppressed the catalytic activity of Pt/Beta. Moreover, the NO conversion efficiency was dependent on the dispersion and particle size of Pt and was minimally affected by the surface area of the catalysts. The Pt/Beta catalyst system was deactivated, and an irreversible poisoning phenomenon for SO 2 was observed. Zr, Ce, and V were introduced into the catalyst system as metal auxiliaries . The Ce-modified Pt-Ce/Beta catalyst prepared in this study showed resistance to SO 2 .

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 has been widely used for NOx emission control, but commercial catalysts inevitably suffer severe deactivation in SO2-containing stack gases at low temperatures because the ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4, ABS) formed in SCR blocks the surface active sites. We resolve this issue by developing a TiO2-supported single-atom Mo catalyst (Mo1/TiO2) that decomposes ABS at ∼225 °C, far lower than the dew point of ABS (∼260 °C). Single Mo atoms paired with the neighboring surface Ti atoms function as Mo–Ti acid–base dual sites, which respectively adsorb the NH4+ and HSO4− of ABS. After the oxidation of NH4+ by surface lattice oxygen on the Mo sites, electrons left behind on the dual sites are localized around the Fermi level, which allows them to transfer to the adsorbed HSO4− on the Ti sites, thus releasing SO2 at low temperatures. The Mo1/TiO2 catalyst with Mo–Ti acid–base dual sites enables the decomposition of ABS at low temperatures, and thus this work provides a way to effectively control NOx emission particularly from industrial boilers.

Spent SCR catalysts contain toxic arsenic (As), valuable vanadium (V) and tungsten (W), posing dual hazards and resource challenges. Conventional recycling methods struggle with the selective removal of arsenic without compromising the carrier or fully recovering valuable metals. Here, an alkali-activated mechanochemical process that overcomes these limitations, achieving >99% As removal and 97% V recovery, while retaining approximately 23.4% of W in the TiO 2 carrier, allowing for direct catalyst regeneration. Mechanistic analyses confirm NaOH-triggered surface TiO 2 dissolution causes pore collapse, liberating encapsulated As/V species for reconstruction into soluble NaAsO 2 /NaVO 3 . XRD/EPR/XPS characterization verifies Na 2 WO 4 formation through W-O bond restructuring. DFT calculations link reduced interatomic distances (below 2 Å) during ball milling to enhanced electron transfer, driving phase transformations. This work provides a sustainable and economically favorable strategy for hazardous waste valorization, highlighting a closed-loop recycling pathway with clear environmental benefits and industrial potential for spent catalyst management.

In this paper, Pt supports on carbon black powder (Vulcan XC-72) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with H 2 in the presence of 2 vol% O 2 over a wide temperature of 20–300 °C. The results showed that the 3 and 5 wt% Pt/C catalysts resulted in high NO conversion (>90 %) over a temperature range of 120 to 300 °C, and the maximum NO conversion of 98.6 % was achieved over 5 wt% Pt/C at 120 °C. Meanwhile, the influence of SO 2 and H 2 O on the catalyst performance of 3 wt% Pt/C was investigated. The catalysts exhibited good SO 2 poisoning resistance when the SO 2 concentration was lower than 260 ppm. Moreover, a positive effect on NO conversion was detected with the addition of 3 and 5 vol% H 2 O in the feed gas stream.
