The redox activity and thermal stability of oxygen carriers (OCs) during multi-cycle processes are important performance criteria. In this paper, the effects of three supports, i.e., ZrO2, TiO2, and YSZ (yttria-stabilized zirconia), on the reactivity, redox stability, hydrogen recovery capacity, and purity, as well as the sintering behavior of La-modified CoFe2O4 (LCF) OCs, were investigated. The results indicated that the unsupported LCF had severe sintering behavior, the aggregation of grains, the collapse of pore structure, and surface densification after multiple cycles led to a significant reduction in its activity. Meanwhile, the interaction between different supports and active components had a remarkable influence on fuel conversion and hydrogen recovery capacity. The formation of Fe2TiO5 in LCF6T4 weakened the initial reduction activity of the OC. Also, phase separation occurred after multiple cycles, forming separated Fe2O3 and TiO2, which further accelerated the sintering and resulted in irreversible deactivation. In contrast, LCF6Z4 and LCF6YZ4 exhibited excellent initial activity and cyclic stability, which was attributed to their improved pore structure and surface properties. Interestingly, the generated La2Zr2O7 pyrochlore structure was also conducive to the enhancement of cyclic stability properties for OCs. In addition, all OCs displayed high-purity hydrogen (>99.5%) generation properties. Overall, the ion-conductive YSZ-supported OC showed excellent reactivity and stability. After 11 cycles, the fuel conversion deactivation and hydrogen production deactivation for LCF5YZ5 were merely 6.23 and 8.26%, respectively.

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 and H2O to syngas, a widely used precursor for chemical synthesis, has attracted increased attention. However, producing syngas over a wide range of CO:H2 ratios is important for its potential application. Herein, a facile method using an anodic oxidizing zinc plate has been developed to obtain lattice-dislocated ZnO, which exhibited higher faradaic efficiencies (above 90%) of syngas than that of ZnO without lattice dislocation. Moreover, the ratio of CO to H2 can be regulated in a wide range from 0.28 to 2.11 by applying different electrolyzing potentials, which is applicable to the synthesis of various chemicals. With density functional theory calculations, we conclude that the lattice dislocation defects in ZnO promote the electroreduction of CO2. In addition, stability and electrochemical noise tests show that lattice-dislocated ZnO can withstand long-term operation due to its effective corrosion resistance.

Biomass chemical looping gasification (BCLG) demonstrates great potential to help address global environmental issues and green energy demands. Yet it remains a challenge to develop novel oxygen carriers (OCs) in BCLG to break the trade-off between the biomass conversion and syngas selectivity with high syngas yield. In this study, Sr–Fe OCs labelled as S3F2, S4F2, and S5F2, containing primarily of Ruddlesden–Popper (R-P) layered perovskite structured Sr 3 Fe 2 O 7-x , were synthesized. Sr 3 Fe 2 O 7-x thermodynamically favors the selective formation of CO over CO 2 , conferring its inherently high CO selectivity. Both the interstitial oxygen and lattice oxygen were found to contribute to the gasification process, which presented enhanced activity and oxygen uncoupling characteristic. The excessive Sr incorporation in S4F2 and S5F2 further increased the oxygen vacancies of Sr 3 Fe 2 O 7-x , and caused a much higher oxygen mobility and oxygen release capacity (S5F2 > S4F2 > S3F2). Additional Sr in S5F2 formed Sr(OH) 2 ·H 2 O on Sr 3 Fe 2 O 7-x surface, which acted as additional oxygen source for gasification and also suppressed the overoxidation of syngas product on the surface. These combined features enabled the most favorable performance of S5F2 with a carbon conversion of 91%, CO selectivity of 94%, and syngas yield of 1208 mL/g at 900 °C, much higher than the Fe 2 O 3 benchmark (77.8%, 59.8%, and 557.9 mL/g, respectively).

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG, C3 and C4 paraffins) from syngas have attracted much attention recently due to the growing demand of non-oil resource as well as its environmentally friendly features, but the catalytic reaction process controlled by thermodynamics and CO conversion rate is low with many side reactions. Here we report a catalyst with core shell structure for LPG synthesis from syngas. Zeolite as shell was synthesized by hydrothermal method firstly and then coated on Cu/ZnO core with Ludox (CZ@Z), the Cu/ZnO core was prepared by co-precipitation method. The unique core shell structure had efficient synergistic effect. The reaction equilibrium favored forward reaction because methanol as an intermediate was directly transformed to dimethyl ether. The zeolite type in the core shell structure catalyst had great effects on the activity and selectivity. The catalysts have been characterized by XRD, NH 3 -TPD and SEM. The activities were determined after in situ H 2 reduction. CZ@H-β catalyst showed a more effective catalytic activity compared with the traditional hybrid catalyst. The excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the combined contribution of both unique core shell structure and proper zeolite type. At these reaction conditions, temperature of 350 °C, pressure of 3.0 MPa and flow rate of 40 ml min −1 , CO conversion and hydrocarbons selectivity achieved 61.8% and 64.2%, respectively. LPG selectivity in hydrocarbons was 70.2%.

The dry reforming of methane (DRM) over Ni-MSC catalysts promoted by different Ce/Ca ratios was compared. The different Ce/Ca ratios proportions were introduced by coprecipitation . The catalysts with different content of promoter were characterized by N 2 adsorption, XRD , H 2 -TPR and TEM. XRD and TEM results demonstrated that Ni–4Ce1Ca-MSC catalyst modified with high Ce/Ca had the best dispersibility and the smallest Ni particle size, resulting in more surface active sites. The synergy between Ce and Ca made a great contribution to prohibiting the generation of carbon deposits and the sintering of active metal during DRM procession. In contrast, catalysts modified only with Ca or Ce exhibited poor catalytic performance, resulting in significant deposition of carbon on the surface of the Ni–5Ca-MSC catalyst. In addition, the high Ce concentration greatly increases the oxygen storage capacity, which helps to form oxygen vacancies by mutual conversion of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Ni 2+ /Ni 0 .

The gasification characteristics of solid waste and wheat straw were investigated in an oxygen-rich atmosphere by using a laboratory-scale continuous fluidized bed reactor in the range of oxidation equivalent (ER) of 0.2~0.5 and reaction temperature of 600 °C~900 °C. Gasification of biomass and waste is an economical method for hydrogen production . When air is used as a carrier gas to gasify municipal solid waste , increasing the oxygen concentration can effectively increase the hydrogen concentration of the syngas . The product distribution of gasification reaction under different mixing ratios and reaction parameters was obtained. As is shown in the results, first, when the ER is between 0.2 and 0.5, if ER decreases by 0.1, the hydrogen concentration of gas production will increase by about 30%; second, if the oxygen concentration increases by 5%, the hydrogen concentration of gas production will increase by about 14%, and the calorific value of gas production will increase by about 14–18%; third, after adding wheat straw in a ratio of 1:1, due to the reduction of plastics, the overall yield of syngas decreased, but the yield of hydrogen increased, and the concentration of hydrogen in syngas increased by 6.4%.

Steam gasification of woody waste represents a sustainable pathway for addressing environmental issues with energy recovery. However, challenges such as low hydrogen content and high tar yield severely limit the gasification efficiency and hinder its large-scale application. In this study, a composite Ni/CaO catalyst was developed to enhance the yield of H2-rich syngas in woody waste gasification, with Ni loading serving as the active site for catalytic cracking and CaO support as the CO2sorbent for sorption-enhancement. Ni nanoparticles ranging from 18 to 28 nm in diameter are uniformly distributed on the CaO support. At 700 °C, Ni/CaO with 10 wt.% Ni loading enables the 455.4 mL/g H2yield with an H2/CO ratio of 1.93, representing increases of 137% and 230%, respectively, compared to non-catalytic conditions. Meanwhile, the tar yield was 12.1 wt.% with an aromatics selectivity of 37%, corresponding to reductions of 50.2% and 54%, respectively. Characterizations confirmed that Ni particles were uniformly distributed on the support in the form of metallic Ni. The Ni active sites promote syngas production by facilitating the cleavage of C-C and C-H bonds in volatiles, while the CaO support enhances H2generation by shifting the water–gas shift reaction equilibrium forward. This study provides a promising strategy for enhancing hydrogen-rich syngas production from woody waste gasification.

Hydrogen-rich syngas was produced from co-gasification of CS and CG. • 4Ce-8Ni/C-CaO markedly enhanced H 2 formation and syngas quality. • The maximum H 2 content reached 59.71 mol%. • Ce promoted Ni dispersion, oxygen vacancy formation, and coke resistance. The catalytic co-gasification of agricultural residues and coal-derived solid wastes offers an industrially promising route for converting low-value carbon resources into hydrogen-rich syngas. In this study, a Ce-Ni/C-CaO composite catalyst was prepared by impregnation and applied to the steam-assisted co-gasification of corn stover (CS) and coal gangue (CG) in a two-stage fixed-bed system. The effects of metal loading, feedstock ratio, temperature, and steam flow rate were investigated, the structure-performance relationship of the catalyst was further examined using XRD, SEM/BET, TEM/STEM-EDS, XPS, H 2 -TPR and O 2 -TG analyses. Under the optimal conditions of CS:CG = 5:5, pyrolysis at 850 ℃, reforming at 900 ℃, and a steam flow rate of 1 mL/min, the 4Ce/8Ni-C/CaO catalyst achieved an H 2 content of 59.71 mol% and a total gas yield of 19.13 mmol/g and an H 2 /CO ratio of 5.22. Characterization results indicated that the Ce species regulated the distribution of surface oxygen species, enhanced oxygen mobility, promoted the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox cycle, and influenced the evolution of catalyst pore structure during the reaction. 3D printing as an advanced manufacturing technique provides an alternative cost-effective option for design and preparation of porous catalytic electrodes. Herein, carbonaceous catalytic electrodes with ternary dopants of boron (B), phosphorous (P), and nitrogen (N) (termed BPN-3Dp-CCEs) were successfully engineered via combination of the 3D printing technique and the following conformal carbonization of ionic liquid. The as-made electrodes were in turn applied to electrify CO 2 into syngas in a controllable composition of a H 2 :CO molar ratio of 0.32–3.46. Notably, the BPN-3Dp-CCEs have tailored 3D macroscopic shapes of self-supporting skeletons, and due to ternary doping, demonstrated promoted catalytic activity in the electrocatalytic CO 2 conversion into syngas. Upon optimization, the electrode remained stable in structure and performance after 10 h of a continuous CO 2 electrolysis operation. This study casts insights and fuels the continuous exploration of multi-heteroatoms doped porous carbon electrodes for metal-free catalytic applications.

Hydrogen-rich syngas from supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of renewable biomass is a promising technology. However, the mechanistic studies related to experiments and simulations on hemicellulose, an important component of biomass, are still limited. Therefore, in this study, the SCWG mechanism of hemicellulose was investigated using a batch reactor and via ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicated that the long chains of xylan broke to short chains during the heating process, which was accompanied by the occurrence of ring-opening reactions. SCWG occurred more completely with increasing temperature or decreasing concentration, when hydrogen was more selective and methane was produced mainly by gas reforming reactions. At 600 °C and 5 g/100 g water, the total gas yield of xylan SCWG was 38.65 mmol g −1 , and the hydrogen yield could reach 14.48 mmol g −1 . The liquid products mainly included furfural and phenol . The solid products consisted of a high C content, which could reach more than 90 % at 500 °C, and were dominated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and at 600 °C by benzene and naphthalene . Xylan formed carbon balls on the surface of the solid products, while hemicellulose exhibited the formation of a dense porous structure.

Enhancing catalyst durability is a critical concern in the partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas since the reaction is operated at high temperatures (>600 °C). Alongside sintering and coke deposition, the deactivation of the supported Ni catalyst is often due to the in situ oxidation of active metallic nanoparticles into inactive cations during the POM reaction. Herein, a Ni/BN catalyst was developed by introducing functional CeOx as a promoter to stabilize the Ni sites. The optimized 4Ni/7.5Ce/BN catalyst, comprising 4 wt % Ni and 7.5 wt % Ce on BN, exhibits enhanced stability during continuous testing at 600 °C for 125 h without any deactivation, which is comparable to that of noble metal catalysts. Comprehensive investigations reveal that maintaining the metallic state of Ni under reaction atmosphere is crucial for the stability of the catalyst. The construction of CeOx on BN effectively inhibits migration and oxidation of the catalytically active Ni0 species.

Herein, a series of Fe-based biochar catalysts (xFe/WSBC) were synthesised via impregnation using wheat straw as a carbon precursor and applied to the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis of olefins (FTO) from syngas. Various characterisations of fresh catalysts demonstrated that Fe content significantly affected the dispersion of iron particles and the surface distribution of Fe 3 + /Fe 2+ . Among the samples, 5Fe/WSBC exhibited the highest surface Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ratio and thus the lowest surface electron density, which enhanced the adsorption and activation of H 2 . In addition, an appropriate amount of the Fe additive (5 wt%) significantly decreased the Fe 3 O 4 particle size, which promoted the continuous reduction and carbonisation processes during FTO to generate iron carbide phases, which boosted CO activation and the subsequent C–C coupling. Therefore, 5Fe/WSBC exhibited the highest CO conversion (46.9 %) and iron time yield (348.9 μmol CO ·g Fe −1 ·s −1 ) as well as the major enhancement of selectivity to light olefins (C 2 = –C 4 = ). The results for the used catalysts demonstrated that 5 wt% Fe clearly inhibited the sintering of iron particle size and improved the catalytic stability of FTO.
