Directly converting dinitrogen (N 2 ) into valuable nitrogen-containing compounds remains an enduring challenge in chemical synthesis. Here, we report the direct cyanation of aromatic substrates using N 2 and methane (CH 4 ) at atmospheric pressure facilitated by a custom-built, air-free dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system. A broad range of aromatic compounds, including benzene, were successfully transformed into their corresponding aromatic nitriles. Both experimental and computational evidence suggested that the reaction proceeds primarily via the in situ generation of •CN radicals from N 2 and CH 4 within the plasma zone. Subsequent radical addition to aromatic rings allowed the one-pot formation of aryl nitriles. This approach represents a major advancement in dinitrogen-based organic methodologies, providing an efficient alternative to conventional cyanation methods that heavily rely on lengthy synthetic routes and hazardous cyanide reagents.

Under the current background of technological development, the new generation of building materials wood film should possess multi-functional characteristics. This research impregnated densified wood templates with dodecanol/epoxy resin to prepare high-strength, hydrophobic and phase-change energy storage transparent flexible wood films (TW/DO-TEMPO). The densified wood template was made from delignified wood treated with TEMPO mediated oxidation and directional shear extrusion, which improved the optical properties and flexibility of the specimen by reducing the pores of the wood cell wall and cell cavity. The above provides an excellent structural carrier for the preparation of wood-based films. The phase transformation enthalpy value and tensile strength of this wood film can be as high as 90.16 J/g and 145.19 MPa respectively. According to different temperatures, the transmittance of the sample can be reversibly switched within the range of 61.31%–93%, which is attributed to the phase-change material dodecanol encapsulated within the sample. It is worth noting that a greenhouse model has been constructed here, and the application of wood film can effectively delay the temperature rise and store energy. The above indicates that TW/DO-TEMPO has the potential to replace traditional materials and be applied to energy-saving building windows, anti-counterfeiting or home decorative materials, which is of crucial significance for promoting the design of green materials.

Cellulose has garnered widespread attention in the field of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) due to its unique properties. However, constrained by the inherent characteristics of the material, the application of cellulose in TENGs is mostly limited to positive triboelectric materials. In this study, a TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TOCN) aerogel film modified with polycarboxyl silicone oil was successfully prepared and utilized as a cellulose-based negative triboelectric material. By integrating a calcium copper titanate (CCTO)-doped, cross-linked amine-modified TOCN composite aerogel film, a cellulose-dominant TENG device was successfully fabricated, achieving an output voltage of up to 12.5 V. In addition, TOCN was employed as a reinforcing filler for PVDF-based negative triboelectric materials. After undergoing further surface roughening or stretching treatments, the composite material achieved an output voltage of 90 V, exhibiting excellent cycling stability, retaining 99.3 % of its initial output voltage after 5000 continuous operating cycles. This study provides valuable insights into the development of TENG devices based on renewable cellulose-derived components, offering new strategies for constructing high-performance cellulose-dominant TENGs.

Particulate matter (PM) pollution poses a significant threat to public health, and there is an urgent demand for air filters that can efficiently remove PM. However, achieving high filtration efficiency is often accompanied by a significant increase in air resistance. This efficiency–resistance trade-off presents a major challenge for advancing high-performance filtration membranes. Herein, biodegradable bacterial cellulose aerogel membranes were engineered through freeze-casting technology, utilizing ultra-fine nanofibers (20-30 nm in diameter) with significantly reduced fiber dimensions compared with existing filters, thereby achieving an optimal efficiency–resistance balance in PM filtration. The filter achieves ultra-high PM 0.3 filtration efficiency (>99.99%) and an ultralow pressure drop of only 22 Pa at an airflow rate of 8 L min −1 , corresponding to normal human breathing conditions. Furthermore, a rigid silica layer uniformly coated onto the surface of cellulose nanofibers by chemical vapor deposition technology endowed them excellent elasticity and moisture resistance. Importantly, it can completely decompose in composted soil within 6 weeks. This study provides guidance for the industrial production of biodegradable and moisture-resistant high-performance nanofiber air filters.

Efficient depolymerization of lignite remains challenging
owing
to both its structural complexity and the high stability of oxygen-containing
bridge linkages. Herein, low-temperature pyrolysis and oxidative pretreatments
were employed to regulate oxygen-containing structures and enhance
the hydrogenolysis reactivity of Zhaotong lignite (ZT). These pretreatments
promoted the structural evolution of lignite, activated oxygen-containing
bridge structures, and suppressed the recondensation of reactive intermediates,
thereby facilitating subsequent depolymerization reactions. A CuCoOx
catalyst capable of dynamic in situ reconstruction was introduced
for catalytic hydrogenolysis. Under reaction conditions, partial reduction
of CuCoOx generated reconstructed Cu 0 -CoOx interfacial
active sites, where the synergistic interaction between metallic Cu
and defect-rich CoOx promoted H 2 activation and selective
C–O bond cleavage. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations
further revealed that interfacial electron redistribution at the Cu
cluster/Vo-Co 3 O 4 (311) interface facilitated
H 2 activation and stabilized reactive hydrogen species.
These findings provide new mechanistic insights into pretreatment-regulated
and interface-controlled hydrogenolysis pathways for the efficient
valorization of low-rank coal.

Biochar-induced interfacial defects modulate electronic structure of Mn Co spinel. • Complete IBU was removed in 5 min with an apparent reaction rate of 1.08 min −1 . • Interfacial structural defects accelerated redox cycles for boosted 1 O 2 generation. • The micropollutant was removed through a 1 O 2 dominated non-radical pathway. Spinel-based transition metal oxides are potential activators for peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) in water purification, yet their sluggish redox cycling, stemming from poor conductivity, remains a critical limitation. In this work, a distiller's grain-derived porous biochar (BC)-decorated Mn Co spinel nanosheet catalyst (MnCoO x @BC) is developed and applied for PMS activation. The catalyst exhibits high efficacy in degrading ibuprofen (IBU), achieving complete removal within 5 min with an apparent reaction rate constant of 1.08 min −1 ([IBU] = 10 mg L −1 , [catalyst] = 200 mg L −1 , [PMS] = 200 mg L −1 ), which is 18 and 15 times for pristine BC and unsupported MnCoO x , respectively. Characterization and DFT calculation results indicate that the introduction of biochar could improve the conductivity and induce the formation of abundant oxygen defects, which accelerate the redox cycles of Co (III)/Co (II) and Mn (IV)/Mn (III) catalytic centers. This interfacial configuration facilitates the conversion of PMS into peroxysulfate radical (SO 5 • − ) and superoxide radical (O 2 • − ) species, and finally towards singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), establishing a non-radical dominant pathway where 1 O 2 accounts for over 95% of the reactive species contribution. This work presents an effective strategy for developing defect-controlled catalytic interfaces to modulate the d-band center of metal sites and steer the interfacial electron transfer pathway, offering profound insights into non-radical-dominated mechanisms for the degradation of emerging micropollutants. Nitric oxide (NO) can effectively combat periodontitis by disrupting biofilms and suppressing inflammation; however, its clinical translation has been limited by the lack of a controllable delivery strategy. This study aimed to develop an ultrasound-controlled NO delivery platform based on a clinically approved NO donor for precise periodontitis treatment. A clinically approved NO donor, isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), was identified that can be efficiently activated by low-intensity ultrasound (2 W/cm 2 ) in the presence of vitamin B 2 tetrabutyrate (TBR) by generating ·OH free radicals, thereby releasing NO in an on-demand and spatiotemporally controlled manner. Thereafter, ISDN-loaded nanoparticles were synthesized, and a miniaturized intraoral ultrasonic transducer for localized NO generation was developed. The reaction between NO and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced from TBR formed peroxynitrite, which exerted strong antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects (the bacterial survival rate within the biofilm during the formation stage was less than 10%) and inhibited NLRP3-mediated inflammation. In a rat model of periodontitis, the treatment significantly decreased bacterial load and mitigated inflammation, resulting in a reduction of inflammatory gene expression by approximately 2.4-fold, while maintaining the integrity of alveolar bone structure. Overall, this study presents a highly promising clinical application for ultrasound-controlled NO delivery strategy for precision therapy of periodontitis.

Bridge–Gel Co-Path reactor couples polarization with nanoplastic enrichment. • Ti–O–P–O–Zr bridges enhance interfacial piezoresponse to ~145 pm V −1 . • Hydrogel enrichment gives a PS NPs adsorption capacity of 312.4 mg g −1 . • UTPCH achieves 68.4% apparent PS NPs removal without light or oxidants. • Reactor-level design improves charge use and substrate delivery. Piezocatalytic treatment of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) is limited by inefficient conversion of mechanical input into interfacial charge and by poor delivery of dilute particles to reactive sites. Here, we constructed a Bridge–Gel Co-Path (BGCP) reactor that coupled a Ti-O-P-O-Zr-bridged UiO-66-NH 2 /C,N-TiO 2 heterointerface with a polyethyleneimine-modified cellulose nanofibril hydrogel. The phosphate-mediated covalent–ionic bridge integrated the two components into a strongly coupled heterointerface with enhanced interfacial polarization and charge redistribution. Bader charge analysis indicated pronounced interfacial charge redistribution around the phosphate bridge, with ca. 1.20 |e| localized in the bridged region, while piezoresponse force microscopy yielded an apparent local piezoresponse coefficient (d 33 , eff ) of ca. 145 pm V −1 . The hydrogel network provided both strain relay and substrate enrichment, with a Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of 312.4 mg g −1 toward PS NPs. Under 40 kHz ultrasonic excitation, the BGCP reactor achieved 68.4% overall apparent removal of PS NPs after 75 min of adsorption pre-equilibration followed by 105 min of mechanical excitation, retained 87.6% of its initial activity after ten cycles, and kept the individual leached concentrations of Ti, P, and Zr below 10 ppb in the effluents collected during cycling. Calorimetry-derived apparent energy metrics were provided to contextualize the energy scale of the present laboratory configuration. These results established the integration of a bridged polarization interface with a transport-active hydrogel network as an effective reactor-design strategy for intensifying mechanically driven interfacial oxidation of dilute colloidal pollutants. Waste sericin was valorized into Fe 3 O 4 / N -doped porous biochar Fenton-like catalyst. • Molecular coordination enabled uniform dispersion of active Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. • 0.1Fe-NC degraded 99.3% AO-7 with kobs of 0.266 min −1 via PMS activation. • Multiple ROS including Fe(IV)=O and 1 O 2 dominated the reaction. • Packed-bed continuous-flow operation kept >98% AO-7 removal for 720 min. Developing sustainable catalysts from waste biomass for advanced oxidation processes is highly desirable for wastewater treatment. Herein, a waste-to-resource strategy was proposed to upcycle silk-industry waste sericin into Fe 3 O 4 -anchored N -doped porous biochar Fenton-like catalysts (Fe-NC) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Distinct from conventional biomass-derived Fe/carbon catalysts that often require external nitrogen dopants or post-loading of metal species, sericin served simultaneously as a carbon source, intrinsic nitrogen precursor, and Fe 3+ -binding biopolymer, enabling the coordination-assisted formation of Fe 3 O 4 / N -doped carbon interfacial active sites after controlled pyrolysis. The optimized 0.1Fe-NC possessed a high specific surface area of 477.9 m 2 g −1 and uniformly dispersed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, enabling rapid removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO-7) over a wide pH range of 4–11. Nearly complete degradation of AO-7 (99.3%) was achieved within 30 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.266 min −1 . Mechanistic investigations revealed that multiple reactive oxygen species, including Fe(IV)=O, SO 4 -, OH, and 1 O 2 , jointly contributed to pollutant degradation. In addition, the catalyst exhibited excellent magnetic recoverability and stability, maintaining 89.7% removal efficiency after five cycles. Continuous-flow experiments further demonstrated stable performance (>98% removal for 720 min), highlighting its practical applicability. This work provides a sustainable strategy for converting protein-rich sericin waste into efficient Fe-based biochar catalysts and offers insights into designing biomass-derived PMS activation systems with integrated heteroatom doping, metal anchoring, and interfacial electron-transfer regulation. Post-synthetic strategy modularly integrates CO 2 -to-CO and CO-to-C 2+ sites. • Redox mediator and confinement synergize to regulate cascade reactions. • Confined TEMPOL acts as PCET mediator, lowering CO 2 -to-*COOH barrier. • Inactive MOF is transformed into an efficient CO 2 -to-C 2+ electrocatalyst. Efficient electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products requires the integration of two sequential functionalities: CO 2 activation to *CO and subsequent CO-initiated C-C coupling. Conventional strategies typically rely on the rigid, pre-designed incorporation of these two functional units during catalyst synthesis. In contrast, we propose a post-synthetic modification strategy that introduces a molecular CO 2 activation unit into a pre-formed catalyst scaffold, thereby enabling its spatially proximal coupling with intrinsic CO reduction sites. This concept is demonstrated by encapsulating 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPOL) into the pores of a tetrapyrazolylporphyrin copper-based metal–organic framework (FICN-8). Owing to the well-matched molecular dimensions, the confined TEMPOL and adjacent Cu nodes cooperatively define a cavity that spatially accommodates a CO 2 molecule. Reduced TEMPOL acts as a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mediator, while spatial confinement regulates the local reaction environment, jointly lowering the free energy barrier for *COOH formation. The confined *COOH intermediate is subsequently converted to CO and further undergoes C–C coupling. As a result, FICN-8—originally inactive for CO 2 -to-C 2+ conversion (Faradaic Efficiency, FE< 0.6%)—is transformed into an efficient electrocatalyst, delivering a C 2+ Faradaic efficiency of 42.6% with a two-orders-of-magnitude enhancement in C 2 H 4 formation rate. The concept of converting biowaste to energy is popular worldwide; however, overcoming the trade-off between bio-oil recovery and obtaining functional biochar remains challenging. This study investigated the effects of three transition metal ions (Mn 2+ , Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ ) throughout the entire process of recovering 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from forestry waste and on the catalytic abilities of biochar derived from the oil-extracted residue. The Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , and Mn 2+ ions significantly increased 5-HMF yields by 93- to 158-fold compared to the metal-free control. However, only marginal improvements in the catalytic ability of the residue-derived biochar for persulfate activation were observed for Cu- or Fe-doped biochar, despite the general benefit of transition metal doping for biochar functionalization. Interestingly, a dual Mn-mediated promotion was achieved beyond enhancing 5-HMF production. The Mn-doped biochar (Mn-Biochar) exhibited excellent peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation capability, enhancing the degradation of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by 6.6- to 15.0-fold. Characterizations revealed that incorporated nitrogen was responsible for this enhancement. N-doping transformed the Mn species into MnO, which tripled the Mn loading capacity and enhanced the electrical conductivity of the biochar. The formed Mn-N x structure in the biochar (Mn-N-FBBC) facilitated polarization of the O O bond and cleavage of the S O bond in PDS, generating 1 O 2 for SMX degradation. Life cycle assessment (LCA) indicated that this dual Mn-mediated process for 5-HMF recovery and biochar production offers synergistic benefits, realizing the “waste-resource-material-treatment” paradigm in biomass conversion.

Attaching flexible resistive strain sensors to human skin enables response detection of behaviours towards real-time physiological monitoring. However, current flexible resistive strain sensors hinder themselves from practical applications due to their low sensitivity, small linear working range, and poor wearing comfort. In this research, a conductive thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) membrane is fabricated using TEMPO modified nanocellulose (TNC) decorated with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to prepare flexible highly sensitive, and breathable strain sensors. Results show that the mechanical property and strain response range of the TPU membrane is significantly enhanced by CQDs-TNC. The TPU membrane also exhibits the highest sensitivity (GF= 49.4 in the 30∼80 % strain range) and a wide response range (0–80 %). At 5 %wt of CQDs-TNC, the membrane displays the highest elongation at break (389.8 %) with maximum breaking stress approaching 9.7 MPa. The CQDs-TNC/TPU membrane exhibits fast response and recovery times (85 ms and 93 ms), low hysteresis (8.9 %), and excellent dynamic cyclic strain performance (1000 stretch/release cycles). The CQDs/TMC/TPU-resistive strain sensor (CTT-RSS) sensor well conforms to human joints, and accurately produces real-time regular resistance strain responses based on human movements. In all, this study contributes a novel research design for fabricating flexible and sensitive sensor to the development of smart textiles.
