Aging-Enhanced High-Performance Zinc Tin Oxide Transistors and Exploration in Illumination Interface Stability

Bing Yang,Qiao Guo,Hongmin Li,Gang He,Shanshan Jiang,Longwei He,Xiang Li,Peng Yu

In this work, a post-annealing rapid cooling and aging treatment process is innovatively proposed to build high-performance zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin-film transistors. The relaxation effect on the abundant oversaturated oxygen vacancy deep-level traps contributes to the shallow donor formation during the aging period. The TFTs aged in an air environment for 10 days possess significantly improved electrical performance, including a clearly increased on/off current ratio of 7 × 106from 2 × 104and a markedly increased saturation mobility of 5.9 from 2.2 cm2·V−1·s−1, verifying the facile method to improve the electrical property of polycrystalline TFTs, and the method has been investigated using the grain boundary defect relaxation model and energy band theory. It is worth mentioning that the TFTs aged under vacuum conditions realized more effective regulation and control on off-state current and demonstrated a wider aging time window. The distinctive illumination interface stability was studied in depth using a charge trapping model and electron–hole pair model, which embody the potential application in photoelectric detectors.

Bioinspired periodic mesoporous tin oxides enable steady nonequilibrium chemical sensing for enhanced gas discrimination

Keyu Chen,Yu Deng,Tianming Hu,Jichun Li,Xin-Yu Huang,Chengcheng Zhu,Honggang Chen,Meihua Chen,Limin Wu,Yonghui Deng,Wenhe Xie

Periodic porous structures with interconnected pore channels and high specific surface area are widely spread in natural world. These structures guarantee rapid mass transportation and efficient biochemical reactions within organisms, thereby satisfying the requirements of complex life activities. Inspired by the periodic porous membrane and breathing process of the mammalian respiratory system, a steady nonequilibrium chemical sensing process is established to achieve high-accuracy gas discrimination based on artificial periodic porous structures consisting of metal oxide semiconductors and pulse heating (PH) technique. Owing to its highly accessible mesopores and enormous solid–gas interfaces, periodic mesoporous tin oxide (P-mSnO2) facilitates gas diffusion during PH cycles and enhances the catalytic reaction between gas molecules and P-mSnO2. As a result, the P-mSnO2 based sensor exhibits stable and enhanced overshoot peaks in gas sensing response curves, thus achieving superior discrimination accuracy (99.8%) for six gases under the assistance of convolutional neural network (CNN). Furthermore, the mechanism underlying the distinct shapes of the gas response curves is uncovered, revealing that gas adsorption capacity, gas diffusion coefficient, catalytic reaction barrier, and transferred electron numbers are crucial factors. This work lays the foundation for the development of single-sensor artificial olfactory intelligence and the exploration of periodic porous structures in diverse frontier fields.

Healing Grain Boundaries With Carbon Nanotubes Enables Large-Area Red Tin-Based Perovskite LEDs

Zeyu Miao,Yinghui Wang,Lei Wang,Wenxu Yin,Ning Wang,Tom Wu,Xuyong Yang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Jiaqi Zhang

Two-dimensional (2D) tin (Sn)-based perovskites are promising lead-free emitters for red light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their intrinsically low carrier mobility and poor film morphology severely limit large-area performance. Here, we introduce a one-step antisolvent-assisted approach that disperses amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) along the grain boundaries of phenethylammonium tin iodide (PEA 2 SnI 4 ) films. The CNTs provide conductive pathways that accelerate carrier diffusion, while their ammonium groups regulate crystallization and improve film uniformity. Transient absorption microscopy and transport measurements confirm that carrier conduction is more than doubled in CNT-modified films. As a result, large-area (150 mm 2 ) PEA 2 SnI 4 LEDs achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency of 2.35% and a peak luminance of 5028 cd m −2 , exceeding the threshold for outdoor-readable displays. This grain-boundary engineering strategy directly addresses the transport and morphology limitations of 2D Sn-based perovskites and establishes a scalable route to high-performance, lead-free optoelectronics.

Dual Photoresponse and Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in Iron-Doped Tin Selenide Nanosheets Photoelectrochemical Photodetectors

Chunhai Tang,Baocheng Luo,XinPeng Dai,Qin Yan,Xing Fan,Liumei Su

Multifunctional SnSe-based platforms are vital for next-generation integrated optoelectronics. Herein, we demonstrate Fe-doped SnSe nanosheets concurrently exhibiting enhanced photoresponse and room-temperature ferromagnetism. The Fe2+ dopants introduce sub-band trapping states and facilitate lattice contraction, which synergistically suppress charge recombination and promote charge separation. Systematic PEC measurements reveal that the Fe-doped SnSe photodetector (Sn0.95Fe0.05Se) exhibits a significantly enhanced photoresponse compared to pristine SnSe. In 0.5 M KOH, Sn0.95Fe0.05Se-based photodetector reaches 115.29 μA W–1 responsivity and 4.39 × 1010 Jones detectivity (420 nm, 0.6 V), roughly 4.8- and 3.8-fold higher than pristine SnSe, respectively. Furthermore, under 420 nm illumination, the device demonstrates a fast photoresponse (τres/τrec = 0.22/0.11 s) and robust 6000 s stability under white light at 0.6 V. This work elucidates the role of Fe2+ ions in modulating carrier dynamics and inducing high-temperature ferromagnetism (Tc ≈ 885 K), offering insights into SnSe-based bifunctional optoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Surface-dependent tribochemistry of cyclopropanecarboxylic acid enabling ultralow friction on TiN coating and steel

Xiaojing Fu,Yaping Fan,Guoxian Jiang,Pingping Sun,Changsheng Zheng,Yingjie Si,Yong Wan,Qiang Li

The addition of CPCa to PAO4 oil significantly reduced friction and wear in TiN/steel tribopair. Under 0.9 GPa and 120 mm/s, PAO4 containing 2.5 wt% CPCa achieved an ultralow COF (∼0.008) and wear rate (7.0 × 10 −8  mm 3 /N·m). Although CPCa improved the tribological properties of steel/steel tribopair relative to pure PAO4, it still yielded COF and wear rate values that were one and two orders of magnitude higher, respectively, than those of the TiN/steel tribopair. To elucidate this disparity, we conducted a systematic comparison of both tribopairs under varied conditions. Advanced surface analysis (XPS, Raman, FTIR) revealed the formation of carbon-based tribofilms exhibiting exceptional lubricating characteristics, particularly on TiN surfaces. The results indicate that the tribochemical transformation of CPCa is governed by stress-induced ring opening. The kinetics of carbon-based tribofilm formation show a pronounced dependence on the counterface, with the TiN surface facilitating faster film formation and sustaining ultralow friction.

Tin-promoted platinum supported on CeOx nanocluster catalysts for CO2-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Rong Wang,Xinyi Yuan,Qingxiang Ma,Yan Wang,Jucang Ke,Xiaopeng Li,Xinhua Gao,Jian Sun,Tian-sheng Zhao

The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO2 (CO2-ODHP) technology is recognized as a promising new route for propylene production, owing to its advantages in energy saving, high yield, and environmental friendliness. However, the inherent complexity of the reaction system and catalyst structures has led to ongoing debates regarding its activation mechanisms and reaction pathways. Thus, the development of high-performance catalysts capable of synergistic activation of propane and CO2 with simultaneous high propylene selectivity continues to be a key objective and challenge. This study aimed to investigate the catalytic activity of Pt-based catalysts supported on CeOx nanoclusters for the CO2-ODHP reaction, from the perspective of enhancing CO2 adsorption and activation. Experimental results demonstrate that the oxygen-rich defect structure on the CeOx nanoclusters significantly promotes the activation and dissociation of CO2. Furthermore, the incorporation of Sn effectively enhances the dispersion of Pt species and their surface electron density, thereby further strengthening the strong adsorption and activation of propane while simultaneously facilitating the desorption of propylene. Following continuous operation for 5 h at 550 °C, the 0.5Pt2.0Sn/CeOx-SiO2 catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic performance, achieving a propane conversion of 45.3% and a propylene selectivity of 93.6%. Based on in situ DRIFTS analysis, a possible reaction mechanism for CO2-ODHP on this catalyst is proposed. The findings of this study provide crucial theoretical guidance and practical references to further advance high-performance Pt-based catalysts for CO2-ODHP reactions.

In situ generated tin protective layers from stannous oxalate for dendrite-free zinc anodes

Qiwei Gao,Zhuo Chen,Junrun Feng,Xiaoyan Zhou,Ziming Wan,Lun Zhang,Hao Gu,Lin Sheng,Pengfei Yao,Feng Ryan Wang,Zhangxiang Hao

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have become popular for energy storage devices due to their cost-effectiveness, high capacity and environmental friendliness. However, the uncontrolled growth of dendrites and corrosion at the zinc anode have seriously hindered AZIBs’ further development. The construction of protective interface layers is a promising strategy to mitigate and suppress the above problems. Herein, we propose the in situ construction of a protective layer of Sn at the zinc anode by coating a suspension of stannous oxalate, which regulates the zinc nucleation sites and induces the deposition of Zn (002) crystal planes, inhibiting the uncontrolled growth of zinc dendrites. The hydrophobic Sn metal protective layer isolated the contact between the active water and the zinc anode and suppressed the corrosion of the zinc anode. As a result, the modified Zn//Zn symmetric cell has a cycle life of 2300 h at 1 mA cm−2, with a significant reduction in the polarisation overpotential. The MnO2//Zn full cell assembled with the modified Zn anode also showed good performance with a specific capacity of 94.74 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles. This work exemplifies the potential of metal salts in the development of stable metal electrodes.

Synergistic immobilization of ions in mixed tin-lead and all-perovskite tandem solar cells

Liu Yuhui,Ma Tianshu,Wang Changlei,Yang Zhenhai,Zhao Yue,Wu Zhanghao,Chen Chen,Bao Yining,Zhai Yuhang,Jia Tianci,Chen Cong,Zhao Dewei,Li Xiaofeng

Low-bandgap (LBG) mixed tin-lead (Sn−Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer from inferior performance due to their high defect density. Conventionally, ethylenediammonium diiodide (EDADI) is used as a surface passivator to reduce defects and improve device photovoltaic performance, but it introduces severe hysteresis caused by excessive mobilized ions at the top interface. Here, we report a mobile ion suppressing strategy of using hydrazine monohydrochloride (HM) as a bulk passivator to anchor the free ions in LBG perovskites. The protonated hydrazine (N 2 H 5 + ) of HM formed hydrogen bonds with iodine (I – ) ions, while the chloride (Cl – ) ions occupied the I – vacancies, collectively impeding the migration of I – and thus mitigating the ion movement-induced hysteresis that arose from EDADI usage. The synergistic strategy of HM doping and EDADI post-treatment significantly suppresses the oxidation of Sn 2+ , decreases trap density, and inhibits rapid crystallization of perovskite. Consequently, we achieved a champion efficiency of 23.21% for LBG PSCs. Integrating these cells with wide-bandgap PSCs into all-perovskite tandem solar cells yields a high efficiency of 28.55% (certified 28.31%) with negligible hysteresis.

Synthesis and mechanical performances of Ni/W–TiN coatings deposited at diverse current densities

Wei Wang,Ming Yin,Qichao Wu

Nickel-based coatings are known for their exceptional properties and high microhardness, making them widely used to enhance the surface performance of metal components. In order to investigate the effect of pulse current densities ( I D ) on the performance and structure of the coatings, the Ni/W–TiN coatings were prefabricated on a 45 steel substrate by using a pulse electrodeposition (PED) approach. The study examines how varying pulse current densities ( I D ) impact the coatings' microstructure, microhardness, phase composition, and wear/corrosion resistance. Among the coatings tested, the one deposited at an I D value equal to 0.5 A/dm 2 revealed the best structure, with average sizes of 66.4 nm for Ni–W grains and 39.3 nm for TiN nanoparticles. XRD patterns revealed characteristic peaks at 43.8°, 50.5°, and 74.2°, corresponding to the (1 1 1), (2 0 0), and (2 2 0) planar directions of Ni–W. The value of pulse I D significantly influenced the microhardness value of the coatings. The sample deposited at 0.1 A/dm 2 showed a microhardness of approximately 675.4 HV, while the coating formed at 0.5 A/dm 2 showed the highest microhardness at around 834.9 HV. Moreover, Ni/W–TiN coating deposited at 0.5 A/dm 2 showed the lowest corrosion value equal to 0.71 A/cm 2 .

Sodium Oleate-Modified Tin Oxide Electron Transport Layer for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Li Chen,Peng Li,Xin Liu,Shuxia Li,Liping Yang,Ning Kang,Chenglong Wang

Internal and surface defects in the tin oxide (SnO2) electron transport layer (ETL) affect the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an effective strategy is designed to modify these defects for high-performance PSCs by incorporating sodium oleate (NaOA) into the SnO2 ETL. The as-prepared SnO2 + NaOA layer provides multiple nucleation sites to assist in the growth of the perovskite film with high crystal quality, increasing the charge transport capacity and suppressing nonradiative recombination. A champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 17.62% is obtained for PSCs with SnO2 + NaOA ETL, corresponding to a filling factor (FF) of 76.00%, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.104 V, and a short-circuit current density (JSC) of 21.00 mA/cm2. Besides, this device maintains an initial PCE of 86.17% in nitrogen for 30 days, compared with only 82.02% for the control device. Finally, it is found that the enhancement of JSC can be attributed to the long-chain alkyl groups, and −COO– and Na+ play a key role in boosting VOC and FF. This work provides a promising strategy to optimize ETLs using amphiphilic surfactants for high-performance devices.

High performance perovskite solar cells with sputtered niobium-doped indium tin oxide transparent electrodes

Wenlong Ji,Ruixin Ma,Shina Li,Haojie Sun,Yanran Li,Kang Li

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a promising transparent electrode material for stable and highly efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, further improvement in ITO performance critically constrains the stability and efficiency enhancement of PSCs. Although many doping strategies were carried out to enhance the performance of ITO, most of these ITO have not been further investigated as transparent electrodes for PSCs. In this study, niobium-doped ITO (ITO:Nb) transparent electrodes were deposited via magnetron sputtering at varying sputtering powers, and their influence on PSC device performance was investigated. The doping of Nb can change the band structure of ITO to present superior energy level alignment, which facilitates carrier transport. By adjusting the sputtering power, we found that ITO:Nb films deposited at 70 W showed a uniform, dense morphology with low surface roughness. These films achieved optimal photoelectric performance, with a resistivity of 3.12 × 10 −4  Ω·cm and an average transmittance of 90.00 %. Moreover, the PSC based on ITO:Nb transparent electrodes exhibits excellent efficiency and stability, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 22.26 % and retaining 85.38 % of its initial efficiency after 80 days of aging in unencapsulated ambient conditions. This work proposes a novel strategy for designing transparent electrodes, enhancing the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

A Robust and Conductive Black Tin Oxide Nanostructure Makes Efficient Lithium-Ion Batteries Possible

Wujie Dong,Jijian Xu,Chao Wang,Yue Lu,Xiangye Liu,Xin Wang,Xiaotao Yuan,Zhe Wang,Tianquan Lin,Manling Sui,I-Wei Chen,Fuqiang Huang

SnO 2 -based lithium-ion batteries have low cost and high energy density, but their capacity fades rapidly during lithiation/delithiation due to phase aggregation and cracking. These problems can be mitigated by using highly conducting black SnO 2− x , which homogenizes the redox reactions and stabilizes fine, fracture-resistant Sn precipitates in the Li 2 O matrix. Such fine Sn precipitates and their ample contact with Li 2 O proliferate the reversible Sn → Li x Sn → Sn → SnO 2 /SnO 2− x cycle during charging/discharging. SnO 2− x electrode has a reversible capacity of 1340 mAh g −1 and retains 590 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. The addition of highly conductive, well-dispersed reduced graphene oxide further stabilizes and improves its performance, allowing 950 mAh g −1 remaining after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 with 700 mAh g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 . Conductivity-directed microstructure development may offer a new approach to form advanced electrodes.
