The rapid detection and early warning of H 2 leakage at relatively low temperatures are crucial for ensuring the safety of human life and property. Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) nanocubes are promising gas-sensing materials due to their relatively large surface area, high activity, and low cost. However, the application of pure WO 3 nanocube for hydrogen (H 2 ) detection is limited by poor sensing properties, such as low response and high operating temperature. In this study, we synthesized WO 3 nanocubes decorated with varying amounts of platinum oxide (PtO) through an impregnation route followed by calcination. The optimized PtO-WO 3 sensor exhibited a high response value of 340 and an ultrafast response time of 1 s–100 ppm H 2 at the optimum operating temperature of 200 °C. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated a low detection limit of 123 parts per billion (ppb) for H 2 and exhibited excellent repeatability, selectivity, and long-term stability. The enhanced gas sensing performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the heterostructure between PtO and WO 3 , and the catalytic activity of PtO as well as platinum (Pt). The PtO-WO 3 sensor shows great potential for practical applications in detecting H 2 in air.

Real-time monitoring of triethylamine (TEA) is critical to environmental safety and daily life. However, detailed challenges remain for TEA gas sensors, such as low-cost and facile synthetic methods, and low working temperatures. In this study, a combination of hydrothermal and wet chemical approaches is utilized for the rational construction of α -MoO 3 @WO 3 with a sheet-like nanostructure. Additionally, the sensing performances towards triethylamine are investigated. According to the results, it was found that the α -MoO 3 @WO 3 sensor has a higher response value (80.4) and faster response and recovery times (9/26 s) than those of pristine MoO 3 at low optimum temperature (200 °C). Again, the α -MoO 3 @WO 3 based sensor also demonstrated high selectivity to TEA as well as good stability. The enhancement of the MoO 3 @WO 3 sensor's gas-sensitive mechanism may be attributed to the formation of n-n heterojunction between MoO 3 and WO 3 and the synergistic effect of both.

While flexible gas sensors have attracted increasing attention, studies that advance their development toward system-level applications remain very limited. Here, we report a flexible WO 3 /MoS 2 nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensor. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of WO 3 and MoS 2 , the sensor exhibits a remarkable 364.5 % response to 1 ppm target gas, along with excellent selectivity, stability, and humidity tolerance. Moreover, the device maintains stable sensing performance under repeated bending, confirming its mechanical robustness for wearable applications. To demonstrate practical utility, the sensor was built into an ambient system that provides continuous OLED readout and triggers audible buzzer alarms once the NO 2 concentration exceeds user-defined thresholds. This work not only highlights the excellent sensing performance of the WO 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction device but also demonstrates its strong potential for system-level deployment in real-world air quality monitoring and personal exposure warning scenarios.

Planar potentiometric NO2 sensors based on 8YSZ (8 mol% Y2O3-doped ZrO2) were prepared with WO3 sensing electrode material. The various electrode microstructures prepared by different sintering temperatures were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the microstructure influences on the sensors' performances were investigated. The sensor sintered at 800°C, with the most reaction sites, moderate adsorption sites and appropriate electrode thickness, exhibits the highest NO2 voltage response. While the sensor sintered at 750°C exhibits the lowest NO2 sensitivity because of the strongest gas-phase catalytic consumption in the WO3 sensing electrode. Based on the results of SEM characterization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, the difference in NO2-sensing performance was attributed to different amounts of electrochemical reaction sites at three-phase boundary, adsorption sites and different degrees of gas-phase catalysis.

In our work, Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/WO 3 (ZCSW) S-scheme heterostructure composites were prepared by an innovation synthesis called electrostatic adsorption method, which supported to form high-quality hetero-interface connection to efficiently improve the photocatalytic activity . Specially, 1D Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (ZCS) nanorods and 2D WO 3 nanosheets were used to construct the S-scheme photocatalysts that have fully reflected both two components’ structural and morphological features. By DFT calculation, this S-scheme photogenerated electron transfer channel could be predicted by the work function between Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (4.132 eV relative to vacuum level) and WO 3 (5.175 eV), thus the practical effect of the S-scheme heterojunction could support the electron flow from the valence band of Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S to the conduction band of WO 3 under the built-in electric field in the space charge region. Meanwhile, PL spectra and electrochemical measurement together reveal the photogenerated electron separation enhancement of ZCSW composites. For photocatalysis , ZCSW40 (40 stands for the weight ratio of WO 3 versus Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S) was the best catalyst among the as-prepared samples with the Cr (VI) degradation rate of 20.4 μmol min −1 ·g −1 cat. , which was nearly 3 times and 2 times higher than those of bare ZCS and the rest of ZCSW photocatalysts under the simulated solar-driven irradiation. Furthermore, ZCSW40 possessed excellent cycling stability in photocatalytic reaction, as well as the highest reaction dynamic constant of 0.92103.

The design of novel functional nanostructures for advanced chemical engineering field is of great importance. In this work, Pd-modified Na-doped WO 3 nanorods are rationally designed for rapid and detection of hydrogen, which is a green and clean energy in modern industry. Notably, and H + as well as citrate ions play an important role in the formation of 1D nanorods, and the morphology formation mechanism is explored. Here, inspired by the novel Pd-modified Na-doped WO 3 nanorods structure, the Pd-400-Na/WO 3 NRs exhibit high sensing ability with ultra-high response to hydrogen (R a /R g = 218@25 ppm) and fast response time (3 s). The combination of experimental and theoretical results shows that Na doping effectively modulates the d-band center of Pd and enhances activation and desorption of H 2 on the Pd surface. The 1D porous structure also facilitates the diffusion of H 2 within the framework, and accelerate the charge transformation. Meanwhile, the surface Pd 0 sites are assigned as the surface active sites for H 2 adsorption and activation, and Pd 2+ sites facilitate the desorption process. Our work paves the new insights for the design of high performance H 2 sensing materials.

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?WO3·2H2O films exhibit pronounced pH-dependent electrochromism in aqueous electrolytes.Lower-pH LiCl provides the best overall electrochromic performance in the Li+system.ZnCl2shows stronger pH-dependent kinetic limitations than LiCl.What are the implications of the main findings? The pH effect in hydrated WO3depends strongly on the cation involved.Multivalent-ion systems are more sensitive to electrolyte-controlled transport and interfacial conditions.pH control offers a practical route to improving aqueous WO3-based electrochromic systems.Aqueous electrochromic systems based on tungsten oxide (WO3) have attracted increasing attention because of their high ionic conductivity, low cost, and improved safety compared with organic systems. However, the role of electrolyte pH in regulating the electrochromic behavior of hydrated WO3films remains insufficiently understood, particularly across cation systems with different valences. In this work, amorphous WO3·2H2O films were electrodeposited on ITO substrates and systematically evaluated in LiCl and ZnCl2aqueous electrolytes with different pH values, with acidic AlCl3used as a supplementary trivalent system. The results reveal pronounced pH-dependent electrochromic behavior in both the monovalent and divalent systems. In LiCl, acidic conditions, especially pH 2.0, gave the best overall performance, including high optical modulation and improved cycling stability, while the dominant pseudocapacitive charge-storage behavior was largely preserved. In ZnCl2, films tested at pH 1.5–2.0 showed significantly better electrochromic performance than those at higher pH values, indicating a much stronger kinetic sensitivity to pH. Combined experimental and first-principles results show that electrolyte pH influences not only proton availability, but also the cation-dependent interfacial charge-compensation environment in hydrated WO3films.

Although WO3 electrochromism exhibits remarkable optical modulation ability, its practical application is largely constrained by poor cycling durability in alkaline metal electrolytes. Herein, an NH4+ aqueous electrolyte with optimized concentration and acidity is proposed to improve the lifetime and electrochromic performance of WO3 films by leveraging the cation’s unique hydrogen-bond intercalation chemistry. To construct full electrochromic devices, the electrolyte and counter electrode are further modified with NH4I and P10/ITO (polyquaternium-10/indium tin oxide nanoparticle) composite coating, respectively. The NH4I additive provides a reversible I0/I– couple for charge compensation, while the P10/ITO composite coating enhances the I0/I– conversion reversibility by adsorbing and immobilizing the polyiodide intermediates. More interestingly, the I0/I– conversion introduces an additional electrochromic ability on the counter electrode, and can therefore further improve the optical modulation amplitude in the 400–600 nm band. Thanks to these merits, the resulting WO3–iodine complementary device achieves an impressive optical modulation amplitude (45.5% at 633 nm) and impressive cycling durability (94.4% of the optical modulation ability remaining after 200 cycles).

The electrochromic supercapacitor is combined with flexible fibers and inorganic-organic composites. • This fiber exhibits excellent electrochromic performance and has a fast color response time of 0.3 s. • After the fibers are bent, their electrochromic and electrochemical properties remain stable. • The structure of "asymmetric devices" has enhanced the performance of electrochromic devices, with a capacitance of 136.95 F*g −1 . In this study, bilayer poly(3-methylthiophene) and WO 3 composites were polymerized on the surface of stainless steel fibers by electrochemical deposition method to form composite electrochromic fibers. The film layer formed by polythiophene is uniformly wrapped around the surface of stainless steel fibers, and tungsten trioxide forms a porous film on the outermost layer, providing interpenetrating channels for ions. The composite electrochromic fiber shows color changes of red to black within the voltage range of −1.5–1.5 V. Its coloring time is 0.55 s and bleaching time is 0.50 s. It has good stability and electrochemical performance. Moreover, the performance of electrochromic fiber remains unchanged in the bending state. More importantly, it has fast charging/discharging performance and high specific capacitance of 440 F·g −1 . The asymmetric electrochromic supercapacitor device can also achieve a high specific capacitance of 136.95 F·g −1 at a current density of 0.8 A·g −1 . The P3MeT/WO₃ asymmetric electrochromic supercapacitor retained 71% of its initial capacitance with a coulombic efficiency of 83.46% after 1000 cycles, demonstrating excellent capacitive performance and electrochemical stability. These results indicate that the electrochromic composite fibers offer broader application prospects in wearable supercapacitors.

Driven by the progress of sustainable development, environmental remediation and water treatment have become increasingly important. Photocatalysis, capable of degrading pollutants through light (especially visible light) irradiation, has received widespread research attention. Titanium dioxide(TiO2) is a promising photocatalyst, yet its practical use is limited by low visible-light utilization and rapid photogenerated charge recombination. Herein, an S-scheme TiO2-WO3(Tungsten trioxide) heterojunction was successfully fabricated; the difference in Fermi levels induces a built-in electric field directed from TiO2to WO3, which thus constructs the S-scheme heterojunction. The as-prepared heterojunction exhibits a markedly enhanced transient photocurrent density, with the carrier lifetime prolonged from 2.69 ns to 41.61 ns. Under visible-light irradiation, the heterojunction achieves a methylene blue (MB) removal efficiency of over 95% within 90 min, and its pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constantkreaches 0.032 min−1, which is approximately 16 times that of pure TiO2. Radical trapping experiments confirm that the dominant active species responsible for the catalytic process are photogenerated holes and the hydroxyl radicals derived therefrom.

A CdS-WO 3 S-scheme heterojunction material modified by CQDs was constructed through simple methods, which effectively increases the photocatalytic degradation rate of single CdS. In the composite material, CdS acts as a reducing photocatalyst (RP) and WO 3 acts as an oxidizing photocatalyst (OP), forming an S-scheme heterojunction. In order to solve the photocorrosion problem of CdS, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were loaded onto CdS. The CQDs possess a high work function, enabling them to facilitate electron transfer, enhance the migration of photogenerated carriers, and suppress electron-hole pair recombination, thus improving photocatalytic performance. The characterizations of XRD, TEM, element mapping, and XPS confirmed the successful synthesis of the CQDs-CdS-WO 3 composite. The material not only exhibited a photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 89.7% and 58.8% towards norfloxacin and tetracycline, respectively, but also revealed a certain degradation capability toward methylene blue and methyl orange. The primary active substances relevant in this degradation process are h + , 1 O 2 , H 2 O 2 , • O 2 − , and • OH. After multiple cyclic experiments, the material still maintains stable crystalline structure and degradation activity. Therefore, the successful preparation of this composite material provides a new method for photocatalytic decomposition of antibiotics and organic dyes.

To broaden the light-harvesting spectrum of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), WO3-X @CdS heterojunctions have been synthesized by in situ growing CdS nanoparticles on WO3-X nanorods rich in oxygen vacancies. After introducing them into perovskite layers by the antisolvent method, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of WO3-X@CdS extends photon absorption into the near-infrared region, while both lattice match and its coordination with iodide ions facilitate uniform nucleation and crystallization process to obtain high-quality perovskite films. Moreover, this dual-functional material simultaneously optimizes the hole transport layer/perovskite energy alignment and accelerates the interfacial charge transfer via LSPR-induced near-field enhancement effects. The spectral expansion and improved carrier dynamics synergistically boost the power conversion efficiency to 25.08%, demonstrating heterojunction engineering as a viable strategy for advancing broadband PSCs and other optoelectronic devices.
