Bi2Mo2O9: Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ phosphors for high-sensitivity optical thermometry and white-light upconversion

Chen Fan,Xiangping Li,Yan Li,Jiani Luo,Lei Li,Hongquan Yu,Baojiu Chen

Bi 2 Mo 2 O 9 : Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ /Ho 3+ phosphors were synthesized via solid-state reaction method. Structural characterization confirmed phase purity and effective rare-earth incorporation into the host lattice. Under 980 nm excitation, the materials exhibited distinct emission bands corresponding to Tm 3+ (477 and 690 nm) and Ho 3+ (542 and 657 nm). Through optimization of Ho 3+ concentration (0.5 mol%), white-light upconversion emission was obtained with CIE 1931 coordinates of (0.3147, 0.2805). Using fluorescence intensity ratio technique based on non-thermally coupled energy levels of Tm 3+ ( 1 G 4 ) and Ho 3+ ( 5 F 5 ), it was found that the material had excellent temperature sensing performance, achieving maximum sensitivities of 21.74 %K −1 (absolute) and 1.892 %K −1 (relative). Remarkably, the material exhibits temperature-dependent chromaticity shifts from white (303 K) to yellow (483 K), enabling visual temperature indication. The findings demonstrate that Bi 2 Mo 2 O 9 : Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ /Ho 3+ phosphors exhibit promising prospects in optical thermometry and thermally-responsive luminescent devices, particularly in scenarios where thermally-driven color variations are advantageous or tolerable.

Strong red upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped Bi2O3 phosphors for optical thermometry

Xiangyue Liu,Bing Li,Bin Duan,Shiying Guo,Shengli Zhang,Nan Meng,Zhaoyang Lou,Tong Liu,Junshan Hu,Hong Ge

Bi 2 O 3 phosphors co-doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions were successfully synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 980 nm near-infrared laser excitation, Bi 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ phosphors emit strong red light at 658 nm and weak green light at 551 nm. The optimal doping concentrations of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ are 0.10 and 0.02, respectively. This composition results in a red-to-green intensity ratio of 157.6. The red emission is primarily driven by energy transfer, promoting Er 3+ from the 4 I 13/2 level to the 4 F 9/2 level [Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 I 13/2 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 F 9/2 )]. The cross-relaxation process lowers the photon population in the 4 F 7/2 level and raises the photon population in the 4 F 9/2 level, leading to the occurrence of a single-band red emission. This phosphor also demonstrates promising potential for optical temperature sensing. It exhibits a maximum relative sensitivity of 3.02 % K −1 at 298 K.

Strong red upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped Sc6WO12 phosphor for optical thermometry

Junshan Hu,Yongqiang Li,Yuxiang Wu,Bin Duan,Keyu Guo,Fengyi Wang,Tong Liu,Wei Jin,Changchun Ding

Herein, a strong red upconversion phosphor of Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped Sc 6 WO 12 was prepared by employing an equivalent substitution approach. When irradiated by 980 nm near-infrared laser, the phosphor emits strong 660 nm red light. The main excitation mechanism for its red upconversion luminescence emission is the energy transfer process, through which the Er 3+ ions is promoted from the 4 I 13/2 energy level to the 4 F 9/2 energy level. In addition, it is noteworthy that the multimode upconversion luminescence phosphor exhibits three different trends upon temperature change, and its upconversion emission integral intensity ratio exhibits a linear relationship with temperature in the range of 298 K–623 K. This special property makes the phosphor promising for applications in optical temperature measurement.

Preparation and temperature sensing properties of Er3+/Yb3+ doped La2O3, La2O2S, and La2O2SO4 phosphors

Caixia Song,Renguang Ye,Youjie Hua,Xuejiao Wang,Tianzhi Jiang,Juan Wang,Luping Lyu,Junhao Wu,Hongping Ma,Chenxia Li,Degang Deng,Shiqing Xu

In this study, three types of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ ion co-doped La 2 O 3 (LO), La 2 O 2 S (LOS), and La 2 O 2 SO 4 (LOSO) up-conversion phosphors with identical morphology and size were successfully synthesized using a homogeneous precipitation method combined with a sulfurization process. The research compares the up-conversion luminescence (UCL) properties of these three phosphors under 980 nm near-infrared excitation. It evaluates their optical temperature sensing performance based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR), while also proposing their luminescence mechanisms. In addition, the phonon energy of the three matrices was determined using FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, and the influence of the phonon energy on the sensitivity of the up-conversion (UC) non-contact thermometer was discussed. The results indicate that the UCL of the LOS system is the strongest among the three different matrix systems. Notably, when examining the thermosensitive behavior based on the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) ( 2 H 11/2 / 4 S 3/2 ), it was found that the maximum absolute sensitivity (S a-max ) of the three samples followed the trend: LOSO (0.00811 K -1 ) > LOS (0.00627 K -1 ) > LO (0.00607 K -1 ); this trend is consistent with the degree of matching (MD) between their phonon energies and energy gaps (ΔE). These findings provide valuable insights for selecting appropriate host materials with the desired thermometric capabilities and offer guidance for enhancing the thermometric performance of non-contact thermometers.

Near infrared emitting and biocompatible Yb3+-DNA complexes with dual responses to Cu2+ and Fe3+

Zhenhua Li,Guotao Sun,Christopher D. Snow,Yanan Xu,Yao Wang,Dan Xiu,Yu Zhang,Zhijun Zhu,Laurence A. Belfiore,Jianguo Tang

DNA-based high-performance rare-earth materials were synthesized for the first time to enhance the near-infrared fluorescence of Yb 3+ and to provide a sensory response to Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ . Yb 3+ , TTA, phen and DNA were coordinated in an ethanol solution. The mixture produced a stable DNA material under the action of stirring and ultrasound. By changing the ratio, the morphology and luminous properties of the product were controlled. The addition of DNA increased the luminescent intensity of Yb 3+ complexes three folds. Earlier reports investigated Yb 3+ complexes fluorescence in the visible range or reported weak near-infrared emission. The rare-earth materials we synthesized herein have significantly increased near-infrared fluorescence intensity of Yb 3+ , and significantly improved biocompatibility. Potential applications for DNA-coordinated Yb 3+ complexes include the detection of Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in vitro and in vivo , taking advantage of good penetration of IR through human tissue in the window 950 nm to 1050 nm.

Nd3+/Yb3+ codoped SrWO4 for highly sensitive optical thermometry based on the near infrared emission

Huiling Song,Qun Han,Xiaoyun Tang,Xueru Zhao,Kun Ren,Tiegen Liu

In this paper, Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ codoped SrWO 4 phosphors for temperature sensing are investigated. Firstly, the doping ratio of Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ was optimized. Then, under a 980 nm excitation, the temperature response of the near infrared (NIR) upconversion emission spectra in the temperature range of 313 K–453 K was characterized. The results show that the NIR emission peaks increase notably with the increase of temperature. With the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, thermal sensing property of the optimized phosphor was investigated. A maximum thermal sensitivity of 0.02857 K −1 ( I 801 / I 869 ) at 453 K was achieved, which is higher than that of the other previously reported similar materials. The minimum temperature uncertainty is about 1 K at 453 K. The results reveal that SrWO 4 : Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ is a promising material for optical thermometry.

Up-conversion luminescence of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Gd2Te6O15 tellurite glass-ceramics for optical thermometry

Haozhang Liang,Xiangtao Lin,Nanshan Ma,Longqing He,Juxia Tong,Zhiwei Luo,Lingying Ye,Anxian Lu

The Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped tellurite glasses and glass-ceramics (GCs) containing the Gd 2 Te 6 O 15 phase were successfully fabricated via the conventional melting-quenching technique followed by a crystallization regime. The Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped tellurite glasses generated intense up-conversion green (524 and 546 nm) and red (658 nm) emissions when stimulated by a 980 nm laser. The up-conversion green emission intensity increased by 68 and 46 times with the increase of the Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ratio, and the optimal Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ratio was found to be 8:1. The surface crystallization process of the Gd 2 Te 6 O 15 GCs was confirmed through analysis of crystallization kinetics and microscopic morphology. The up-conversion luminescence and lifetime of Er 3+ ions were enhanced by the precipitation of low-phonon-energy Gd 2 Te 6 O 15 crystals. The GC sample crystallized at 480°C for 4 h showed the highest luminescence intensity. The optical thermometry properties of Er 3+ ions at thermally coupled energy levels ( 2 H 11/2 / 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 ) were explored. The Gd 2 Te 6 O 15 GCs co-doped with 0.25 mol% Er 2 O 3 and 2.0 mol% Yb 2 O 3 exhibited an excellent temperature relative sensitivity ( S r ) of 1.22% K −1 at 293 K and a great repeatability of 98.07%. These results suggest that the Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Gd 2 Te 6 O 15 GCs show promise for optical thermometry.

Ultrafast Room-Temperature Synthesis of Yb3+/Er3+ Codoped K3ZrF7 Nanocrystals for Thermal Enhancement of Upconversion

Huhui Fu,Wenfeng Xie,Yuanqi Qian,Xiao Li,Yaning Zhang,Jingbing Lu,Qi Xiong,Anhua Wu,Liangbi Su,M. Liu

Lanthanide (Ln 3+ )-doped upconversion nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted great attention due to their outstanding luminescent performance and wide applications in various fields. However, the preparation of most Ln 3+ -doped NCs requires rigorous conditions such as high reaction temperature, long reaction time, strict anhydrous and oxygen-free environment, and tedious post-treatment process. Herein, sub-100 nm Yb 3+ /Er 3+ codoped K 3 ZrF 7 octahedral NCs are prepared by an extremely simple coprecipitation method (10 s only at room temperature). The resulting NCs show excellent upconversion luminescence (UCL), significantly superior to both their conventional high-temperature-synthesized counterparts and the room-temperature-synthesized NaBiF 4 :Yb/Er controls. More importantly, abnormal thermally enhanced UCL over a temperature range from room temperature to 473 K is found in these K 3 ZrF 7 :Yb/Er NCs, making them promising candidates for ratiometric thermometry applications. By employing the luminescence intensity ratio between two non-thermally coupled energy levels of Er 3+ , namely 4 F 9/2 and 2 H 11/2 , these NCs display an extraordinarily high absolute sensitivity of 443.2% K −1 and a comparatively large relative sensitivity of 1.55% K −1 at room temperature. These results reveal that K 3 ZrF 7 :Yb/Er NCs can not only be facilely prepared via an ultrafast room-temperature synthesis, but also hold great potential in various areas such as optical temperature sensing and biological applications.

Unravelling the intrinsic luminescence in single-doped Yb3+ fiber microspheres for multi-mechanism optical thermometry

Guichen Bao,Xuanhao Zhang,Chao Lin,Bowen Lv,Shuai Hu,Jinshu Huang,Xin Guo,Xiaoming Xi,Maohui Yuan,Kai Han

Trivalent ytterbium (Yb 3+ ) ions demonstrate a range of intrinsic luminescent properties, including cooperative luminescence, Stokes and anti-Stokes luminescence, and defect-related emissions, which extend significantly beyond their traditional role as sensitizers. However, the concurrent observation of such multi-mechanism luminescence within a single-doped material remains rare. Here, we unravel the intrinsic luminescence characteristics of Yb 3+ -doped fiber microspheres produced through CO 2 laser melting. Under 980 nm excitation, we identify four coexisting emission mechanisms: multi-ion cooperative luminescence, Stokes luminescence, phonon-assisted anti-Stokes luminescence, and defect-related luminescence from non-bridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHCs) in silica. The CO 2 laser reflow process is pivotal in activating this multi-mechanism behavior by promoting the formation of Yb 3+ dimers, enhancing phonon coupling, and introducing controlled defect states. Building on this intrinsic luminescence, we develop a multi-mechanism fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometer that combines thermally coupled Boltzmann-type transitions (Stark-splitting levels of Yb 3+ ) with non-Boltzmann strategies involving cooperative and defect-related emissions. The thermometer achieves high relative sensitivity and low temperature uncertainty over the range of 298–798 K, demonstrating rapid response and outstanding stability in real-time monitoring on ceramic heating plate. This work introduces a new approach for single-doped rare-earth optical thermometry by harnessing the luminescence capabilities of Yb 3+ , offering simplicity and reliable performance.

Upconversion and NIR persistent luminescence of CaTa4O11:Tb3+/Yb3+ phosphors prepared by molten salt synthesis

Mengxue Cao,Yongze Cao,Shengyi Liu,Xu Liu,Changhao Yu,Yichao Wang,Jinsu Zhang,Xiangping Li,Baojiu Chen

CaTa 4 O 11 (CTO):Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors were prepared using the molten salt synthesis. Under 980 nm laser excitation, this phosphor can emit light at 382 nm through a three-photon upconversion process from 5 D 3 → 7 F 6 in Tb 3+ . When the concentrations of Tb 3+ and Yb 3+ are 0.21 and 0.065, respectively, CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ exhibits the strongest upconversion green light emission from 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 in Tb 3+ , whose integral intensity is 5.77 times that of NaY(WO 4 ) 2 :Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ . Under 264 nm excitation, CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ has persistent 974 nm luminescence from 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 in Yb 3+ . By comparing the CTO host, CTO:Yb 3+ , CTO:Tb 3+ and CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ , the Ta 5+ -O 2- , Yb 3+ -O 2- and Tb 3+ -O 2- charge transfer bands (CTB) have been determined. During the downshifting process, Tb 3+ -O 2- CTB transfers energy to Yb 3+ -O 2- CTB. The trap depths of CTO:Yb 3+ and CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ are 0.680 and 0.679 eV, respectively, and their persistent times are 14.61 and 11.07 s, respectively. Under 980 nm laser excitation, the absolute and relative temperature sensitivities were obtained to be 2.74 and 0.178 K −1 , respectively. All results confirm that the CTO:Tb 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors can be used as temperature sensing and infrared persistent luminescence.

Ferroelectricity-Tuned Upconversion Luminescence in Yb3+/Er3+-Doped Bi4Ti3O12 Thin Films for Information Photonics Applications

Jianhai Fu,Qiqing Li,Yuping Jia,Fei Long,Dechao Gan,Chunxu Liu,Wang Wang,Haoran Chen,Xianggui Kong,Dabing Li,Yulei Chang

Ferroelectric Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 (BIT), with a unique structure and superior ferroelectricity, can distort its lattice under an external electric field. Doping BIT with lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) is appealing as their luminescence intensity is sensitive to crystal symmetry changes, allowing effective modulation by an external electric field. However, current research on Ln 3+ -doped BIT primarily focuses on ceramic materials, which pose challenges for heterogeneous integration with devices. In this study, we synthesized Yb 3+ /Er 3+ -doped BIT thin films at various concentrations via the sol-gel method and systematically investigated their ferroelectric and luminescent properties. With a 0.5Yb/0.1Er doping ratio, we successfully achieved real-time, dynamic, and reversible regulation of the upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity of BIT thin films by applying an external electric field. Furthermore, digitally encoded electrical signals were successfully converted by manipulating UCL emission into visible light intensity variation signals, and we visualized electrical logic and arithmetic operations. These findings offer new possibilities for developing information photonics applications, providing a novel approach to integrating ferroelectric and luminescent properties in thin-film materials for advanced technological applications.

Enhancement of luminescent emission in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Y2Ti2O7 films with Ag/Au nanoparticles

Yanling Liu,Feng Song,Jiadong Liu,Jun Zhang,Yin Yu,Hongyan Zhao

The enhanced luminescences of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Y 2 Ti 2 O 7 films were demonstrated when silver/gold (Ag/Au) nanoparticles (NPs) were doped in the films. With the precipitation of the Ag nanoprisms, more intense green (525   nm, 546   nm), red (659   nm) upconversion (UC) emission bands and strong enhanced near infrared (NIR) emission were observed and the enhanced factors were up to 16.7, 15.6, 17.7 and 5.6 folds, respectively. The accordance between the local surface plasmon resonance of NPs and the UC emission band significantly increased the luminescence intensity. The efficiencies of the radiative emissions were enhanced also due to the hydroxyl groups primarily absorbed around the NPs.
