Designing a heterojunction photocatalyst to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes is of great significance to improve the hydrogen production efficiency. In this work, we report a rational design to grow ZnIn 2 S 4 on Mo-MOF-derived N-doped C-coated MoO 2 (MOZIS), and it has excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production with triethanolamine (TEOA) as sacrificial agent. N-doped C improves the electron transport efficiency between MoO 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . The systematic study shows that MOZIS has good properties to promote the effective separation and transfer of photocatalytic charges, which is attributed to the tight contact interface and good energy band structure between MoO 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . The optimized nanocomposites have a high hydrogen production efficiency of 10.89 mmol·g −1 (4 h) under visible light. MOF-derived N-doped C-coated MoO 2 is an effective strategy to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Graphical abstract

Solar-driven CO2 conversion into fuels and sustainable energy has attracted increasing attention around the world. However, the efficiency of the transformation remains relatively low due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. In this work, we prepared a ZnIn2S4–ZnAlOx nanocomposite for visible light driven CO2 reduction. The thin layered structure facilitated the photoinduced charge carrier separation and transfer, and also gave excellent adsorption ability towards CO2 molecules. Such a nanocatalyst exhibited excellent activity in visible-light driven CO2 reduction with a CO optimal formation rate of 1100 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 5 times that over bulk ZnIn2S4, and the CO/H2 ratio was increased from 0.2 over bulk ZnIn2S4 to 1.5 over the ZnIn2S4–ZnAlOx composite. In situ FT-IR experiments indicated that CO2 was reduced on ZnIn2S4–ZnAlOx following a COOH* pathway. This work gives insights into the mechanism of the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction and inspiration to construct novel heterostructure materials for application in energy and environmental catalysis.

A molecularly imprinted polymer/Bi 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /ITO sensor was fabricated and used for the photoelectrochemical detection of rutin. The Bi 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite was synthesized by solvothermal method and it displayed good photoelectrochemical property because of the matched energy levels of Bi 2 S 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . In addition, ZnIn 2 S 4 could improve the stability of the composite and avoid photocorrosion. The photocurrent signal of the Bi 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite was much larger than that of Bi 2 S 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, rutin imprinted chitosan was prepared by mixing rutin and chitosan solutions, followed by simple cross-linking reaction with glutaraldehyde at room temperature. The molecularly imprinted material was combined with Bi 2 S 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /ITO to construct photoelectrochemical sensor, and the resulting sensor showed a low detection limit (i.e. 0.003 μM) and a wide detection range (i.e. 0.01–100.0 μM) for rutin. It also displayed high stability and selectivity. The sensor could be used for the detection of rutin in real samples.

Controlling charge flow direction is an effective strategy for carrier separation to improve photocatalytic performance. Herein, we create an external electric field (EEF) by chemically loading [Mo 3 S 7 ] 4+ clusters on the S-Zn side of asymmetric ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) monolayers to steer the charge flow. The EEF that stems from the positively charged [Mo 3 S 7 ] 4+ clusters drives photogenerated electrons in the 2D monolayer to the S-Zn side, which are further transferred to the [Mo 3 S 7 ] 4+ clusters through the Mo–S bonds for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). This structure exhibits an optimal PHE rate that is four times higher (6.44 mmol g −1 h −1 ) than that of ZIS (1.6 mmol g −1 h −1 ). Furthermore, the significance of the EEF for carrier separation was confirmed via density functional theory calculations based on charge density distribution. This special heterojunction provides a new strategy to accelerate the carrier separation in asymmetric 2D materials.

Graphical A molecular-level hierarchical Znln 2 S 4 /HPW S-scheme heterojunction was prepared through one-pot hydrothermal method in this work. The obtained Znln 2 S 4 /HPW heterojunction photocatalysts indicated molecular-level interfacial contact, enhanced light absorption, and accelerated charge separation and transfer, achieving efficient overall H 2 production and benzyl alcohol oxidation with corresponding photogenerated electrons and holes, respectively. Simultaneous utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes to achieve overall redox reactions is attractive but still far from practical application. The emerging step (S)-scheme mechanism has proven to be an ideal approach to inhibit charge recombination and supply photoinduced charges with highest redox potentials. Herein, a hierarchical phosphotungstic acid (H 3 PW 12 O 40 , HPW)@Znln 2 S 4 (ZISW) heterojunction was prepared through one-pot hydrothermal method for simultaneous hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution and benzyl alcohol upgrading. The fabricated HPW-based heterojunctions indicated much enhanced visible-light absorption, promoted photogenerated charge transfer and inhibited charge recombination, owing to hierarchical architecture based on visible-light responsive Znln 2 S 4 microspheres, and S-scheme charge transfer pathway. The S-scheme mechanism was further verified by free-radical trapping electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. Moreover, the wettability of composite heterojunction was improved by the modification of hydrophilic HPW, contributing to gaining active hydrogen (H + ) from water sustainably. The optimal ZISW-30 heterojunction photocatalyst indicated an enhanced hydrogen evolution rate of 27.59 mmol g −1 h −1 in benzyl alcohol (10 vol. %) solution under full-spectrum irradiation, along with highest benzaldehyde production rate is 8.32 mmol g −1 h −1 . This work provides a promising guideline for incorporating HPW into S-scheme heterojunctions to achieve efficient overall redox reactions.

Solar energy into hydrogen (H 2 ) energy, as a promising clean energy technology, has garnered significant attention in the face of the escalating global energy crisis. Herein, an innovative Cu@C-N@ZnIn 2 S 4 core–shell catalyst was designed for achieving efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H 2 production with a notable H 2 evolution rate of 6.05 mmol h −1 g −1 under simulated sunlight irradiation and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9.35 % at wavelength of 420 nm. The enhanced photothermal-assisted photocatalytic performance is attributed to its unique core–shell structure, where the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Cu@C-N core significantly amplifies the photothermal effect, leading to a substantial increase in the reaction system’s temperature, which not only boosts the energy state of photo-generated charge carriers, but also accelerates the separation and migration of electrons and holes. Additionally, the porous water transport channels of Cu@C-N within Cu@C-N@ZnIn 2 S 4 composite facilitate the rapid diffusion of water molecules, allowing more effective interaction with active sites and further enhancing H 2 production efficiency. This work highlights the synergistic effects of LSPR and porous water transport in significantly improving solar to H 2 production, offering new design strategies for high-performance photothermal-assisted photocatalysts.

Solar-driven hydrogen production is significant for achieving carbon neutrality but is limited by unsatisfactory surface catalytic reaction kinetics. Layer regulation can impact carrier transmission or catalytic behavior, but the specific effects on the oxygen or hydrogen evolution reaction (OER or HER) remain unclear, and atomic layer level modulation for maxing HER is challenging. Here the distinct roles of modulated Zn–S or In–S surface layers in ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) for the OER and HER, respectively, are disentangled. Moreover, the extensive characterizations and computational results demonstrate that stressful environments enable individual modulation and introduce Ni into the surface In–S layer rather than the easily alterable Zn–S layer, creating deeper hybridized electronic states of Ni 3 d –S 3 p , optimizing H * adsorption/desorption, and maximizing surface catalytic benefits for the HER. Consequently, the optimized ZIS exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of up to 18.19 mmol g −1 h −1 , ≈32 times higher than pristine ZIS. This investigation expands the application scenarios of ultrasonic technology and inspires other precise control types, such as defects and crystal plane engineering, etc.

The hydrothermal preparation of NiCo 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts with different mass ratios is studied. Ni-cobalt bimetallic sulfide nanosheets are grown on zinc-indium bimetallic sulfide to form a compact heterojunction . First, both NiCo 2 S 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 exhibit N-type semiconductor characteristics, a heterojunction formed by both can reduce the surface reaction energy barrier and use its synergy, strengthening the charge self-diffusion between the two semiconductors, it means the formation of a strong electric field. From the electron transfer path and band structure , NiCo 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 has S-scheme heterojunction characteristics. NiCo 2 S 4 is a reducing photocatalyst (RP), and ZnIn 2 S 4 is an oxidative photocatalyst (OP). Under the action of built-in electric field (BIEF), strong photogenic electrons and holes exist in CB of RP (NiCo 2 S 4 ) and VB of OP (ZnIn 2 S 4 ). Thus, the overall redox capacity of the NiCo 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction is enhanced. Using visible light, the composite material can be used for photocatalytic hydrogen production . It is further shown that the composite material has a good effect in photocatalytic hydrogen production under the sensitizer eosin Y (EY) system. The optimal hydrogen production is about 221.75 μmol when the mass ratios of NiCo 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 is 20%, and the photocatalytic activity of the composite is about 47 times that of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Notably, the stability of the composites is the better. A reasonable photo-catalytic mechanism is proposed based on the band gap and photoelectrochemical properties of heterojunction.

In recent years, self-propelled micro/nanomotors have attracted great attention in environmental remediation. However, their progress in real-world applications is still constrained by crucial issues such as manufacturing processes, low yields, poor adaptability, and poor motion ability. In this work spherical bubble-propelled micromotors (i.e., Pt-ZnIn2S4) were fabricated with a strong motion ability and photocatalytic performance to replace conventional mechanical stirring for photocatalytic water purification. A simple, efficient, and highly productive ultraviolet reduction method is employed to deposit Pt on the ZnIn2S4 microspheres assembled by nanosheets. The Pt nanoparticles (NPs) can promote the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers between semiconductor interfaces and enhance their visible light absorption due to their strong electron-accepting ability (Cocatalyst) and localized surface plasmon resonance effect (Plasmonic metal NPs). In addition, due to the asymmetrical structure of the Pt-ZnIn2S4 micromotor, Pt NPs can decompose H2O2 to produce oxygen bubbles, driving the micromotor to move rapidly (Engine), up to a maximum speed of 970 ± 150 μm s−1. Compared with traditional photocatalysts, the movement of the Pt-ZnIn2S4 micromotor and the migration and collapse of the generated bubbles increase the solution stirring effect and mass transfer effect, thereby achieving efficient and rapid degradation of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) without mechanical stirring. The degradation mechanism of organic pollutants is mainly based on the production of reactive oxygen species in photocatalytic processes. This study shows that the combination of photocatalysts, plasmonic metal NPs, and the strong motion ability of bubble-propelled micromotors presented the potential for practical environmental pollution remediation.

The S-scheme heterojunction has been recognized as an effective strategy to boost photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. However, the insufficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers still is a critical bottleneck that limits further activity improvement. Here, we rationally constructed defect-rich nanostructured Sv-ZnIn2S4/CdS (Sv-ZIS/CdS) S-scheme heterojunctions by introducing sulfur vacancies (Sv) into ZnIn2S4 and systematically explored the role of S vacancy defects in the regulation of interfacial charge dynamics. Experimental results demonstrate that the synergistic combination of S-scheme heterojunction and Sv effectively extends visible-light absorption and accelerates charge separation. Specifically, sulfur vacancies enhance the built-in internal electric field (IEF) within the heterostructures, thereby driving the spatial separation and directional migration of photogenerated carriers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further reveals that Sv-induced charge redistribution reduces the surface kinetic barrier, facilitating the adsorption and activation of H2O and H* intermediates and thus boosting the hydrogen evolution reaction. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized Sv-ZIS/CdS photocatalyst exhibits a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate (3.852 mmol g–1 h–1). This work provides profound insights into the manipulation of heterojunction interfacial charge behavior via defect engineering, offering a feasible paradigm for designing high-performance nanostructured photocatalysts for solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

The symmetry-breaking structure can induce lattice distortion, modulate electron distribution, suppress carrier recombination, and optimizing catalytic activation via asymmetric atom interactions, which is of vital importance for improving the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production activity. In this paper, the symmetry-breaking structures of Mg-modified ZnIn 2 S 4 microspheres are synthesized through a convenient single-step hydrothermal method using the gradient introduction amounts of Mg. X-ray absorption spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy indicate that the introduction of Mg can modify the bond lengths and crystal plane angles of the substrate material to construct a symmetry-breaking structure. The photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production performance of MZIS-15 is approximately 3.3-fold than ZnIn 2 S 4 up to 2797.0 μmol h⁻ 1 g⁻ 1 . Furthermore, femtosecond transient absorption spectra, photoelectrochemical measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that, although the optimal symmetry-breaking structure does not significantly alter the light absorption range and bandgap width, it greatly suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, enhances the charge separation efficiency, and lowers the adsorption energy barrier of the O 2 molecule. This work provides a systematic research perspective on symmetry-breaking structures, and also offers new research ideas for the synthesis of advanced catalysts.

N-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 microflowers synthesized via one-step solvothermal method using DMF as N source. • N doping introduces sulfur vacancies and negatively shifts the conduction band of ZIS. • Optimized N30-ZIS achieves H 2 O 2 production of 350 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light. • EPR spin-trapping confirms the exclusive two-electron ORR pathway with ·O 2 − as key intermediate. • Structure-defect-activity relationship established for N-doped sulfide photocatalysts. The photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) via the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) represents a sustainable alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, the efficiency of this approach is limited by the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and a lack of active surface sites. Herein, nitrogen-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 (N-ZIS) microflowers were synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method using N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) as the nitrogen source. The optimized N30-ZIS sample (with 30 mL of DMF) achieves an H 2 O 2 production rate of 350 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is 1.5 times that of pristine ZIS. Nitrogen doping introduces sulfur vacancies and modulates the electronic band structure, leading to enhanced charge separation and a more negative conduction band potential. Mechanistic studies confirm that H 2 O 2 generation proceeds via a two-electron oxygen reduction pathway involving ·O 2 − as the key intermediate. This work demonstrates that controlled nitrogen doping is an effective strategy to boost the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production performance of ZIS-based materials. Nitrogen-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 (N-ZIS) microflowers are synthesized via a one-step solvothermal route using DMF as the N source. The optimized N30-ZIS delivers a visible-light H 2 O 2 production rate of 350 μmol g −1 h −1 (1.5 times that of pristine ZIS). Nitrogen doping creates sulfur vacancies and downshifts the conduction band, boosting charge separation and enabling a two-electron O 2 reduction pathway with ·O 2 − as the key intermediate. This work establishes controlled N-doping as a facile strategy to enhance photocatalytic ORR for sustainable H 2 O 2 synthesis.
