Hydration kinetics and mechanism of C3S with cellulose nanocrystals

Aofei Guo,Danying Gao,Zhihui Sun,Hu Feng,Zhenyun Yu,Zeyu Guo,Hong Shang,Fengjuan Liu

Tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) is the primary ingredient in ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Understanding the hydration kinetics of C 3 S with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is the key to unveiling the intrinsic mechanism of CNC affecting OPC hydration . This study investigates the hydration interactions between C 3 S and CNC through extensive testing. Findings indicate that CNC incorporation can initially slow the hydration reaction and postpone the early-stage hydration of C 3 S. However, past the initial period (3 days in this study), CNC presence enhances the hydration pace and aids the hydration process , leading to an increase in the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) and calcium hydroxide (CH) without creating new phases. Further, the presence of CNC promotes the homogenous hydration of C 3 S, ensuring a homogenous distribution of hydration products . It also reduces the Ca/Si ratio in the C–S–H, without altering the C–S–H morphology. A correlation is made between heat flow and the thickness of hydration products enveloping C 3 S particles, confirming that CNC can intensify the inward water diffusion rate through C 3 S particles for the same hydration product thickness. Critically, it is found that the effect of CNC on C 3 S hydration is dependent on the water/C 3 S ratio. A low or moderate water/C 3 S ratio can promote C 3 S hydration but a very high water/C 3 S ratio diminishes the beneficial effects of CNC on C 3 S hydration. Finally, the study proposes a explanation for CNC's influence over the hydration of C 3 S with varying water/C 3 S ratios.

High-Strength Polyurethane Composite Film Reinforced by Cellulose Nanocrystals

Siqi Zhan,Yanyan Bo,Hongyan Liu,Ruize Yuan,Wenhe Ding,Yuting Zhang,Dongxiu Zhang,Shiwei Wang,Mingyao Zhang

In recent years, safety laminated glasses have been widely used in construction, transportation, military, and other fields owing to their safety, comfort, and concealment. In this work, a cellulose nanocrystal was synthesized and blended in a polyurethane (PU) elastomer. Based on this, an aliphatic PU composite (CPU) film with high transparency and excellent mechanical properties has been achieved by stepwise polymerization. The mechanical properties and impact resistance of CPU composites were improved obviously, attributed to the microphase separation and hydrogen bonding. The tensile strength and bonding strength of the CPU film with glass can reach 53 and 3.4 MPa, which were 150 and 280% higher than those of the PU film, respectively. Extremely strong impact resistance of the laminated glass based on the CPU film has been confirmed by the falling ball impact test, which was 2.3 times that of polyvinyl butyral and 3.5 times that of PU. It will be an excellent candidate for safety laminated glass, which can be used in the aerospace, defense, and automotive fields.

Transparent zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-based coatings for marine antifouling

Yanyi Duan,Jiangjiexing Wu,Aihua Qiao,Xin Guo,Xiaotian Ge,Wei Qi,Anastasia Penkova,Rongxin Su

Marine optical devices face significant biofouling challenges, which compromise their transparency and disrupt their functionality. Existing coatings, typically relying on toxic biocides or dynamic surfaces, harm the marine environment and fail to meet the signal stability required for high-performance equipment. In this study, we introduce a fully bio-based approach to transparent antifouling coatings by developing zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers (ZCNF) modified with lysine, arginine, and histidine. Notably, this innovative modification exhibits enhanced hydrophilicity and antifouling properties compared to unmodified cellulose nanofibers, while also forming a stable antifouling surface, overcoming the key limitations of conventional materials. Laboratory and marine field tests demonstrate the remarkable long-term performance of ZCNF coatings, achieving up to 90 % antifouling efficiency in controlled environments and 80 % in real-world conditions after 150 days. This work provides a sustainable alternative for marine optical coatings, advancing the application of bio-based nanomaterials to address real-world marine challenges.

Stable MXene/cellulose nanofiber membranes as osmotic energy generators

Ruoyang Sun,Yumeng Xia,Mengyuan Peng,Yinghui Wang,Jinming Zhang,Qingtao Liu,Shouwei Zhang,Jinfeng Wang

Osmotic energy is a clean and renewable alternative resource to non-renewable fossil fuel. Harvesting this “blue” energy typically required ion-selective membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal scaffolds for constructing nanofluidic ion-selective membranes in osmotic energy conversion. However, the 2D membranes were often fragile and instable in solutions because of the weak van der Waals interactions between two-dimensional nanosheets. Here, stable MXene nanofluidic membranes were constructed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in MXene. The CNF was used as binder to enhance the mechanical stability in solutions. The resulted MXene/CNF membranes were investigated in terms of structure, ion selectivity and osmotic energy generation. The results showed that the MXene/CNF membranes exhibited excellent cation selectivity due to the negative charged carried by MXene and CNF, benefiting the osmotic energy conversion. The maximum power output density reached up to 1.32 and 0.338 W m −2 at 1000-fold KCl and 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient, respectively. Moreover, this MXene/CNF energy generator exhibited a long-term output stability. This work demonstrated the great potential of nanofluidic generators based on the two-dimensional material and the biomass material cellulose for osmotic energy conversion processes.

Cellulose Nanocrystal-Based Robotic Devices for Encrypted Information Transmission

Jiaqi Li,Xiao Yu,Hao Zhou,Xingchen Han,Dongdong Han,Yan Xu

Degree of circular polarization (DOCP) of reflected light is an intriguing optical phenomenon of chiral photonic materials; however, it remains underexploited. This is especially the case with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), despite the fact that their angle-dependent structural color has been overwhelmingly attended to. Herein, CNC-based chiral photonic materials capable of dual actuation are constructed by vacuum-assisted self-assembly. Leveraging femtosecond laser machining, complex structural color 3D shapes, and crawling robotic devices are produced from these materials. The incident angle-incident lasing wavelength-reflected light DOCP correlation and DOCP-based ternary code are established, based on which a secure and efficient robotic information transmission strategy is presented, where a message is simply synthesized from structural color photos using a single-use key and the encryption security increases with photo numbers by power law. Our work unleashes the hidden potential of CNC-based soft actuators and enables them for secure and efficient robotic data transmission.

Cholesteric Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Acrylate Microspheres as Noniridescent Photonic Pigments

Jiayu Liu,Mingfeng Wu,Xinxin Yan,Huan Wang,Guang Chu,Shilong Yang,Junlong Song,Fengshan Zhang,Jiaqi Guo

Structural color has emerged as a compelling alternative to conventional organic dyes and inorganic pigments, offering advantages including fade-resistant brilliance, eco-friendliness, and versatile functionality across numerous technological domains. In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of cellulosic photonic pigments via shear-induced self-assembly of cholesteric liquid crystalline hydroxypropyl cellulose acrylate (HPCA) microspheres. The as-prepared photonic pigments exhibit vivid noniridescent structural colors with remarkable thermal stability across a broad temperature range of 25–70 °C. We comprehensively studied the internal structure of HPCA microspheres, elucidating the origin of their noniridescent optical properties and revealing the interactions between surfactants and the liquid crystalline HPCA phase during shearing. Moreover, a mask-assisted assembly process was employed to organize HPCA microspheres into region-specific color patterns of diverse shapes, which can act as photonic inks for information encryption and decoding. We envision that the synthesized cholesteric-organized photonic pigments can serve as a sustainable, high-performance alternative to conventional chemical dyes, exhibiting excellent market prospects in sensing, anticounterfeiting, and decorative applications.

Preparation and characterization of cellulose nanofibrils via surface xanthation

Pinhong Chen,Jilong Mo,Xijun Wang,Zhipeng Sun,Wuyi Zhou,Haisong Qi

The growing demand for sustainable materials has driven the development of efficient, energy-saving methods for scalable nanocellulose production. This study presents the synthesis of xanthate-modified cellulose nanofibrils (XCNF) through a xanthate esterification process. Key parameters such as alkali concentration, carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) dosage, and reaction time were optimized to evaluate their effect on the degree of substitution (DS). After xanthate groups were introduced under mild condition, low-energy mechanical fibrillation produced XCNF with high aspect ratios (up to 500) and stable dispersibility. XCNF films were prepared by vacuum filtration of the XCNF suspension, showing significantly improved mechanical properties, particularly higher toughness, while maintaining tensile strength. The XCNF film achieved a tensile strength of 32 MPa while maintaining excellent toughness (320 kJ·m −3 ) and modulus (1800 MPa). In conclusion, the xanthate esterification method provides a sustainable, cost-effective approach to nanocellulose production, bridging small-scale research and large-scale manufacturing. This study lays a foundation for advancing cellulose-based materials in applications such as nanopaper.

Preparation and Chiral Recognition Ability of Crystalline Cellulose Phenylcarbamate

Zhang Yu-Tong,Dai Xiao,Deng En-Ting,Zhang Li-Li,Zheng Ting,Shen Jun

As one of the most popular polysaccharide derivatives with high chiral recognition ability, cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (CDMPC) has been successfully applied in the enantioseparation of a wide range of racemates for various purposes. However, the derivative is usually synthesized with an amorphous structure, and its effect on enantioseparation ability remains obscure. To obtain a better understanding of the correlation between its structure and enantioseparation ability, in this study, CDMPC derivatives with crystalline and amorphous structures were prepared through carbamoylation followed by anti-solvent precipitation. Their chiral recognition abilities were evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with chiral stationary phases (CSPs). Interestingly, the ordered arrangement of the helical polymer chains of CDMPC was effectively induced by the aromatic solvent after derivatization, forming a crystalline derivative ( c-CDMPC ) with a uniform and compact worm-like morphology, whereas the amorphous derivative ( a-CDMPC ) was obtained by regular treatment with a polar alcoholic solvent. The c-CDMPC –based CSP exhibited higher chiral recognition abilities with much shorter retention times for most racemates in this study, compared to the a-CDMPC –based CSP. In particular, flavanone ( Rac-7 ), an important chiral drug with anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and cardiovascular protective activities, was even better resolved with higher enantioselectivity on crystalline c-CDMPC than on Chiralcel OD, a commercialized chiral column based on CDMPC. This indicates that the crystalline ordered arrangement played a critical role in the chiral recognition ability of the cellulose derivative.

Degradable carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan sponge swabs for sustainable diagnostics

Boyu Liu,Zhangyuan Cheng,Jiujie Xia,Min Wang,Zili Zheng,Shuang Yang,Yan Shen,Dandan Dai,Jiaqi Wang,Xin Yu,Chengchen Guo

Nucleic acid testing for viral detection typically relies on disposable swabs made from traditional polymers, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, the non-degradable nature of these materials leads to the accumulation of solid medical waste, with disposal methods, such as incineration and landfilling, posing significant environmental and economic challenges. To address this issue, we present a sustainable alternative: a degradable sampling swab fabricated from degradable biopolymers, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS), to mitigate environmental impact. The integration of CS into the CMC matrix enhances the mechanical properties of the swab through the formation of the hierarchically structured coral fiber cluster (CFC). Compared to commercial flock swabs, the developed hierarchically porous sponge swabs demonstrate a 16 % higher viral protein release rate in quantitative detection and a 3 % improvement in sample collection performance. After use, the swab can be fully dissolved or degraded through acid/alkali treatments or natural degradation within a short period. This approach provides a high-performance tool for viral detection and offers a practical and effective solution to reducing medical waste, aligning with sustainable diagnostics.

Experimental Research on Plasma Electrolytic Liquefaction of Microcrystalline Cellulose

Weidong Zhao,Wenjie Liu,Yi Sun,Junfeng Wang

The efficient liquefaction of cellulose is a critical technological pathway for the energy utilization of biomass. This study constructed a plasma electrolytic liquefaction experimental system based on the principle of liquid phase surface arc discharge, systematically investigating the effects of operational parameters, including working voltage, catalyst dosage, solid–liquid ratio, and micro-arc polarity, on the liquefaction characteristics of microcrystalline cellulose. Experimental results demonstrated that under optimized conditions—anode micro-arc configuration, working voltage of 750 V, catalyst dosage of 1.44 g, and solid–liquid ratio of 6:38—the cellulose conversion rate reached 79.2%, with a liquefied product mass of 4.75 g. Mechanistic analysis revealed that high-energy electrons and hydrogen ions generated by plasma discharge synergistically act on the cleavage of cellulose molecular chains. Under the combined effects of the catalyst and plasma, cellulose molecules are depolymerized into small molecular compounds. Compared with traditional liquefaction processes, this technology exhibits significant advantages in reaction rate and energy efficiency, providing a novel technical route for the efficient conversion of biomass resources.

Synergistic cellulose–MoS₂ composites for high–performance humidity sensing

Yonggang Du,Weiqiang Xu,Yulei Jia,Yahui Cui,Yuyan Bi,Yudou Wang,Diansheng Wang

To overcome the suboptimal performance of paper–based humidity sensors, sensing composite materials were developed through the aqueous–mechanical defibration of everyday office paper into paper–derived cellulose fibers (PDCFs), followed by integration with molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) microspheres. This straightforward yet effective strategy affords significant advantages for enhancing sensing capabilities. Specifically, the defibration process increases available adsorption sites by exposing hydrophilic groups while simultaneously generating more porosity for accelerated water vapor diffusion. Furthermore, utilization of the PDCFs suspension facilitates uniform dispersion of MoS₂ microspheres throughout the cellulose matrix, thereby harnessing synergistic effects from both components to improve sensing performance. Additionally, the aqueous composite's drop–casting compatibility enables utilization of microscale interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) spacing to enhance sensitivity. The resulting PDCFs–MoS₂ film sensor demonstrates exceptional characteristics, including a high response value (4167.8), a broad detection range (0–97 % RH), rapid response and recovery time (1.0 and 22.6 s, respectively), low hysteresis (3.8 %), good repeatability, and long–term stability. The sensor's practical utility was validated via human respiration monitoring and non–contact switching. This work establishes a viable pathway for transforming office paper into high–performance humidity–sensing materials.
