How to skillfully enhance the OH - binding energy of the hydrophilic site to accelerate water decomposition and avoid OH - poisoning is a huge challenge for achieving efficient alkaline HER kinetics. Therefore, the Ru-Fe 2 P/Re 3 P 4 model was designed from the perspective of coordinating the binding energy and spillover path of OH - . Density functional theory (DFT) disclosed that Re and Ru atoms act as hydrophilic sites and hydrogen evolution sites, respectively, to synergistically promote alkaline HER. In addition, the Ru dopant reduced the water dissociation energy barrier by enhancing the OH - binding energy of the Re hydrophilic sites. Meanwhile, Fe atoms with stronger OH - binding energy exhibited the OH - detoxification effect by promoting the OH - dynamic spillover from the Re sites. Given these, a unique Ru-ReFeP/IF-Q electrode was prepared by the ‘vapor phase phosphorization-quenching Ru doping’ strategy. As anticipated, the Ru-ReFeP/IF-Q electrode, driven by the Re-Ru-Fe alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mechanism, only requires an overpotential of 172 mV at the industrial-level current density of 1 A cm −2 . The reinforced signal peaks attributed to Ru-H and Fe-OH species in the in-situ Raman spectra confirmed the detoxifying effect of Fe sites in avoiding OH - poisoning at hydrophilic active sites. In summary, this work provides a novel design idea for accelerating alkaline HER kinetics from the perspective of synergistically optimizing the binding energy and spillover path of OH - byproducts.

A microwave (MA) irradiation-persulfate-formate system was constructed to detoxify Cr contamination and solidify the geopolymerization of the alkali-activated composite material. Three series of experiments were correspondingly conducted to evaluate the treatment for the chromate-contaminated soil. The changes in the molar ratios of formate to persulfate and the mass rates of fortifier to soil led to a significantly greater reduction of Cr VI in the detoxification experiments. The increase of blast furnace slag from 50% to 80% in the composite cementitious materials (CCM) intensified the immobilization efficiencies of chromate and the compressive strengths of geopolymer blocks. MA irradiation potentially enhanced the binding of Ca cations to the aluminosilicate compounds. The degree of reaction in the phenomenological kinetics model mathematically verified the geopolymerization process. Ettringite was formed within the structure of the geopolymer in the coupling system. Sulfate radicals released from persulfate not only contributed to the detoxification process but also strengthened the immobilization process.

Patulin is one of the most important mycotoxins that contaminates fruit-derived products and causes acute or chronic toxicity in humans. In the present study, a novel patulin-degrading enzyme preparation was developed by taking a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase and covalently linking it to dopamine/polyethyleneimine co-deposited magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles. Optimum immobilization provided 63% immobilization efficiency and 62% activity recovery. Moreover, the immobilization protocol substantially improved thermal and storage stabilities, proteolysis resistance, and reusability. Using reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate as a cofactor, the immobilized enzyme exhibited a detoxification rate of 100% in phosphate-buffered saline and a detoxification rate of more than 80% in apple juice. The immobilized enzyme did not cause adverse effects on juice quality and could be magnetically separated quickly after detoxification to ensure convenient recycling. Moreover, it did not exhibit cytotoxicity against a human gastric mucosal epithelial cell line at a concentration of 100 mg/L. Consequently, the immobilized enzyme as a biocatalyst had the characteristics of high efficiency, stability, safety, and easy separation, establishing the first step in building a bio-detoxification system to control patulin contamination in juice and beverage products.

The response and detoxification mechanisms of three freshwater phytoplankton species (the cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon flos-aquae , the green alga Pediastrum simplex , and the diatom Synedra acus ) to cadmium (Cd) were investigated. The cell growth of each species was measured over 10 days, and chlorophyll a fluorescence, Cd bioaccumulation (including surface-adsorbed and intracellular Cd), and phytochelatin (PC) synthesis were determined after 96-h exposures. The growth of the three phytoplankton species was significantly inhibited when Cd concentrations were ≥5 mg L −1 . Compared with P. simplex , greater growth inhibition in S. acus and A. flos-aquae occurred. The changes in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters including the maximal quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) and relative variable fluorescence of the J point (Vj) demonstrated that the increase in Cd concentration damaged PSII in all three species. After 96-h exposures, the accumulation of surface-adsorbed Cd and intracellular Cd increased significantly in all three species, with the increase of Cd concentrations in the media; total cadmium accumulation was 245, 658, and 1670 times greater than that of the control in A. flos-aquae , P. simplex , and S. acus , respectively, after exposure to 10 mg L −1 . Total thiols exhibited a similar trend to that of Cd accumulation. PC 3 was found in A. flos-aquae and P. simplex in all Cd treatments. Glutathione (GSH) and PC 2 were also produced in response to exposure to high concentrations of Cd. PC 4 was only discovered at exposure concentrations of 10 mg L −1 Cd and only in S. acus . The intracellular Cd/PCs ratio increased in all three phytoplankton with an increase in Cd concentrations, and a linear relationship between the ratio and the growth inhibition rates was observed with P. simplex and S. acus . Our results have demonstrated that metal detoxification mechanisms were dependent on the species. This study suggested that the variance of metal detoxification strategies, such as cadmium accumulation and PCs, might be an explanation why algal species have different sensitivity to Cd at various levels.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) on detoxification and oxidative defense in the hepatopancreas and intestine of Chinese mitten crab ( Eriocheir sinensis ) under cadmium (Cd) stress. The crab was exposed to 0.6 μM Cd, 0.6 μM OTC, and 0.6 μM Cd plus 0.6 μM OTC for 42 days. Our results showed that in the intestine, OTC alone enhanced protein carboxylation (PC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, which was associated with the increased OTC accumulation. Compared to Cd alone, Cd plus OTC increased Cd and OTC contents, and reduced detoxification (i.e., glutathione (GSH) content, gene expressions of cytochrome P450 ( CYP ) isoforms, 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity, mRNA levels and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)), and antioxidant defense (i.e., gene expressions and activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) in the intestine, leading to the increased in PC and MDA contents, suggesting that OTC had a synergistic effect on Cd-induced oxidative damage. In the hepatopancreas, although OTC alone increased OTC accumulation, it did not affect PC and MDA contents. Compared to Cd alone, Cd plus OTC reduced MDA content, which was closely related to the improvement of detoxification (i.e., GSH content, mRNA levels of CYP isoforms, EROD activity, gene expressions and activities of GPx, GR and GST), and antioxidant defense (gene expressions and activities of CAT and SOD, metallothionein content). Aryl hydrocarbon receptor ( AhR ) and nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 ( Nrf2 ) transcriptional expressions were positively correlated with most detoxification- and antioxidant-related gene expressions, respectively, indicating that AhR and Nrf2 were involved in the regulation of these gene expressions. Our results unambiguously demonstrated that OTC had tissue-specific effects on Cd-induced toxicological effect in E. sinensis , which contributed to accurately evaluating Cd toxicity modulated by TCs in crab.

The transformation of toxic arsine (AsH3) gas into valuable elemental arsenic (As0) from industrial exhaust gases is important for achieving sustainable development goals. Although advanced arsenic removal catalysts can improve the removal efficiency of AsH3, toxic arsenic oxides generated during this process have not received adequate attention. In light of this, a novel approach for obtaining stable As0 products was proposed by performing controlled moderate oxidation. We designed a tailored Ni-based catalyst through an acid etching approach to alter interactions between Ni and NaY. As a result, the 1Ni/NaY-H catalyst yielded an unprecedented proportion of As0 as the major product (65%), which is superior to those of other reported catalysts that only produced arsenic oxides. Density functional theory calculations clarified that Ni species changed the electronic structure of oxygen atoms, and the formed [NiIII–OH (μ-O)] active centers facilitated the adsorption of AsH2*, AsH*, and As* reaction intermediates for As–H bond cleavage, thereby decreasing the direct reactivity of oxygen with the arsenic intermediates. This work presents pioneering insights into inhibiting excessive oxidation during AsH3 removal, demonstrating potential environmental applications for recovery of As0 from toxic AsH3.

p -Chloro- m -xylenol (PCMX), a widely used antimicrobial agent, poses potential ecological risks due to its ubiquitous distribution and documented toxicity to aquatic vertebrates. Although microbial degradation represents a key natural attenuation pathway, the molecular mechanisms governing PCMX biodegradation remain elusive. Here, we report the isolation of three novel Rhodococcus strains from marine sediments capable of mineralizing PCMX. Among these, strain R. ruber SJ-1 completely metabolized 30 mg/L PCMX within 72 h and maintained significant degradation capacity under high-salinity stress. Integrated genomic and transcriptomic analyses revealed that PCMX exposure triggered extensive transcriptional reprogramming in strain SJ-1, with 1063 genes upregulated and 533 downregulated. PCMX inhibited core cellular functions, including key genes related to cell stress resistance, energy production, central carbon metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, and protein biosynthesis. Concurrently, aromatic catabolism pathways were markedly induced. A highly upregulated gene cluster ( sj4821 - sj4838 ) was identified as pivotal for PCMX metabolism, encompassing a flavin-dependent monooxygenase (NphA1-sj, sj4831 ; 2145.26-fold) and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23O, sj4838 , 2052.43-fold) genes. Quantitative PCR assays further validated the upregulation patterns. Based on bioinformatics and high-resolution mass spectrometry analyses, we proposed that strain SJ-1 converted PCMX to 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylcatechol via ortho -hydroxylation, followed by meta -cleavage of the aromatic ring. This study presents the first documented evidence of PCMX degradation by a marine Rhodococcus isolate. Our findings reveal the molecular mechanisms driving PCMX detoxification and cellular adaptation, establishing a foundation for bioremediation in saline ecosystems.

Ibuprofen, a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, contaminates agricultural products and potentially threatens human health due to its frequent detection and poor biodegradability. Microbial metabolism dominates the elimination of residual ibuprofen in the environment. In mineral salt medium at pH 6 with 5 mM glucose, Streptomyces sp. D218 transformed ibuprofen concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.40 mM in 24 h. The optimal temperature, pH, and initial OD600 nm for ibuprofen transformation by strain D218 were 25–37 °C, 5.0–6.0, and 1.0–1.5, respectively. Strain D218 could simultaneously transform ibuprofen into the intermediates 2-hydroxyibuprofen and ibuprofen amide (IBUA). The two intermediates were further metabolized to 2-hydroxyibuprofen amide (2HIBUA), thus relieving the growth inhibition of ibuprofen in Scenedesmus obliquus. This is the first complete pathway reported for the detoxification of ibuprofen transformation by a Gram-positive strain. These findings further our understanding of the microbial catabolism of the IBU.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of ozone and secondary organic particulate matter, with an extensive range of sources and complex composition. Dichloromethane (DCM) and n -hexane, as common and typical VOCs, are extensively applied as solvents, extractants and cleaning agents in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The persistence, teratogenicity and carcinogenicity seriously harm the ecological environment and human health. In this study, combining the advantages of microbial electrolytic cell (MEC), the detoxification mechanism between low concentration n -hexane and DCM was analyzed. The results demonstrated that the n -hexane favored the enrichment of key functional genera, including degrading and electroactive microorganisms, which could be attributed to the mild toxicity of n -hexane at low concentrations and sufficient carbon sources. In contrast, DCM significantly inhibited the degradation of n -hexane. Metagenomic annotation results suggested that DCM was converted to formaldehyde via hydrolyzing haloalkane dehalogenase (DhlA) or DCM dehalogenase (DcmA). Formaldehyde was partly oxidized to carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and partly assimilated into the ribulose monophosphate pathway or the serine pathway. And then converted to acetyl-CoA to enter the TCA cycle, which provided energy and material cycles for microbial metabolism. These results provided a new method for the detoxification of mixed VOCs and offer a new insight into the treatment and disposal of pollutants in practical engineering applications.

The development of dual-function detoxification against organophosphorus nerve and blister agents is strategically vital. However, the catalytic detoxification of chemical warfare agents in atmospheric environments is limited by the lack of bulk water. Herein, a hierarchical catalytic reactor is fabricated by two-step blade-coating on cotton fabric substrate, featuring a LiCl/polyethyleneimine (PEI) hygroscopic layer and a highly active metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66-NH 2 surface layer. The intermediate LiCl layer can actively capture water from the air (1.36 g g -1 ), while the defect-engineered MOFs exhibit high intrinsic activity, with a half-life of 1.8 min for liquid-phase degradation of dimethyl 4‑nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) in a N-ethylmorpholine buffer solution. Under atmospheric conditions, the composite fabric shows competitive detoxification performances, with a half‑life of 1.3 h against DMNP and 17 min for the blister agent simulant of 2‑chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). The MOF-outer/PEI-inner spatial design prevents competitive nucleophilic side reactions of PEI toward DMNP, ensuring high selectivity for the hydrolysis. The detoxification of CEES proceeds via a parallel network of hydrolysis, bond‑cleavage coupling and linker participation. This work provides a hygroscopicity-catalysis structural partitioning design for efficient broad-spectrum detoxification of typical lethal chemical warfare agents.

Fungal mycotoxins pose a serious threat to human and animal health, especially due to their co-occurrence in food and feed, causing synergistic toxicity. Current enzymatic detoxification strategies often depend on redox mediators, limiting enzyme diversity and restricting practical application. In this study, we characterized PsCopA, a novel multicopper oxidase from Pseudomonas sp., heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli , which efficiently degraded aflatoxin B 1 and zearalenone simultaneously without mediators. PsCopA showed optimal activity at 50°C (pH 7.0) for AFB 1 and 60°C (pH 8.0) for ZEN and retained over 80% activity after 2 h incubation across 20-80°C. UPLC-MS/MS analysis identified AFQ 1 and β-zearalanol as degradation products, both exhibiting significantly reduced hepatotoxicity and oxidative stress in zebrafish, even under co-exposure, suggesting effective mitigation of synergistic toxicity. Notably, PsCopA removed over 90% of toxins from contaminated cornmeal and peanut meal. These findings demonstrate PsCopA has a promising prospect for industrial application in food and feed detoxification.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a widespread mycotoxin contaminating fruits and related products worldwide. Given its significant threats to public health and substantial economic consequences, the development of an efficient and safe detoxification strategy has become pressing necessity. This study synthesized Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 @PDA composites via sol-gel method and alkaline PDA grafting, capable of efficiently removing OTA in wines. The characterization results confirmed that Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 @PDA has a hierarchical structure consisting of Fe 3 O 4 cores, TiO 2 layers, and PDA coatings, with ~13.47 emu/g saturation magnetization. Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 @PDA showed enhanced methylene blue photocatalytic activity and acid tolerance compared with TiO 2 , and achieved 88.51% ochratoxin A (OTA) removal in wine via adsorption (82.83% in 2 h) and photocatalysis (5.68% in 2 h). After 8 cycles, the OTA removal efficiency remained at 33.10%. Degradation products were low-toxicity OTα and phenylalanine. These results validate Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 @PDA as a highly efficient photocatalyst for detoxifying OTA in wine.
