This study focused on the valorization of Pinus koraiensis seed scale residues for furfural production from regenerated hemicellulose via solid acid catalysis. The optimized process included solid acid catalysis, ultrasonic pretreatment, and microwave-assisted processing, and the optimal conditions were 50% ethanol (30:1 mL/g), 80 W of ultrasonic power (10 min, 40°C), 3% solid acid, and 385 W of microwave power (20 min), resulting in a theoretical furfural yield of 10.50 mg/g and an actual yield of 10.36 mg/g (conversion rate of 31.49%). The recovered solid acid exhibited similar catalytic performance to the fresh solid acid (yield of 10.23 mg/g and conversion rate of 31.11%). Kinetic analysis revealed that reaction equilibrium was reached within 10 min, with activation energies of 11.96 kJ/mol at 30–40°C and 25.24 kJ/mol at 40–50°C, indicating inhibition at higher temperatures. Characterization confirmed the acidity, high thermal stability and excellent reusability of the acid despite slight deactivation after recovery. Future research will focus on optimizing the efficiency and reusability of solid acid catalysts and exploring the use of regenerated hemicellulose derivatives in biobased chemical and sustainable material applications. As renewable and biodegradable resources with tunable structures, hemicellulose derivatives offer great potential for producing biobased chemicals, ecofriendly materials, and catalysts, advancing the biobased economy while reducing fossil fuel dependence and environmental impacts.

Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural are prominent biomass-derived aldehydes, offering substantial potential for sustainable fuel production. The electrochemical dimerization of these bio-derived aldehydes is investigated in this study as a novel and mild approach to carbon-chain elongation (>C6), leading to the formation of viable precursors for aviation kerosene. Compared with conventional electrochemical hydrogenation, this approach directly promotes C–C coupling without additional reagents or harsh conditions. Systematic investigations of electrode materials, applied potentials, and electrolysis duration enabled precise control over product selectivity. Notably, a Pb/CF electrode demonstrated superior catalytic performance, achieving 77.7 % selectivity for hydrofuroin from furfural and 89.8 % for 5,5′-bis(hydroxymethyl) hydrofuroin from HMF. Mechanistic analyses revealed that moderate hydrogen adsorption capacity on electrode surfaces enhances aldehyde coupling and suppresses competing hydrogenation pathways. Consequently, this mild electrochemical route offers clear advantages over thermochemical upgrading, including operational simplicity, environmental compatibility, and integration with renewable energy sources. These findings not only underscore the feasibility of electrochemical dimerization for biomass upgrading but also establish a robust basis for developing sustainable aviation fuels.

A base-free catalytic system for the aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural was exploited by using Pt nanoparticles immobilized onto a thermoresponsive poly(acrylamide- co -acrylonitrile)- b -poly( N -vinylimidazole) block copolymer, with an upper critical solution temperature of about 45 °C. The Pt nanocatalysts were well-dispersed and highly active for the base-free oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural by molecular oxygen in water, affording high yields of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (up to >99.9%). The imidazole groups in the block copolymer were conducive to the improvement of catalytic performance. Moreover, the catalysts could be easily separated and recovered based on their thermosensitivity by cooling the reaction system below the upper critical solution temperature. Good stability and reusability were observed over these copolymer-immobilized catalysts with no obvious decrease in catalytic activity in the five consecutive cycles.

The sustainability and profitability of biorefineries depend on the efficient utilization of all lignocellulosic components. Therefore, developing an integrated pretreatment process that facilitates efficient fractionation and targeted valorization is essential to ensure the viability of future biorefinery systems. Here, we present an integrated fractionation strategy that efficiently separates all major lignocellulosic components and converts them into a variety of valuable products. Specifically, an ultra-low concentration of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) selectively depolymerizes hemicellulose to xylose at a high yield (93.86%), while preserving cellulose and lignin. The resulting xylose hydrolysate is directly mixed with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) to form a biphasic system, in which the Lewis acid AlCl3 cooperates with p-TsOH to dehydrate xylose into furfural with a yield of 93.14 mol%. The p-TsOH treated solids are subsequently subjected to mild hydrolysis in an acidified LiBr molten salt hydrate (MSH) system, yielding glucan oligomers at 76.34% and recovering lignin with a yield of 79.64%. Spectral analysis shows lignin enriched in less-condensed moieties (Hibbert's ketones, benzodioxane), favouring downstream valorization. Glucan oligomers are isolated by antisolvent precipitation. A screening environmental assessment based on the experimentally validated mass balance (100 kg bamboo feed) indicates a low fresh-material demand and manageable energy use: fresh PMI (process mass intensity, chemicals make-up only) ≈0.28 kg kg−1 combined products; E-factor ≈0.30 kg kg−1 (excluding water); and an energy intensity of ≈27.9 MJ kg−1 (≈1.39 kg CO2e per kg, assuming natural gas heating). This approach thus offers a practical and environmentally credible route to co-produce furfural, glucan oligomers, and structurally favourable lignin from lignocellulosic biomass.

The development of metal-free strategies for selective transfer hydrogenation is of particular interest in the conversion of biomass. Herein, the interfacial frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) constructed in CeO 2 (1 1 0) surface have been successfully demonstrated as novel catalytic active sites for the highly selective transfer hydrogenation. The defect-enriched porous nanorods of CeO 2 with interfacial FLP sites show the >99.0% selectivity at 95.2% conversion for transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. Mechanism investigations exhibit that the interfacial FLP sites can simultaneously activate furfural and isopropanol, which benefits the enhanced catalytic activity. While, the strong adsorption of aldehyde compounds on the interfacial FLP sites results in the improved hydrogenation and the suppressed pathway of the side-reaction, thereby achieving the superior catalytic selectivity. Such interfacial FLP sites exhibit the great potentials for the selective transfer hydrogenation of various unsaturated compounds.

Conversion of biomass-derived furfural platform compound to value-added tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFL) molecule is a sustainable route, and an efficient nonnoble metallic catalyst is a key factor for this reaction. In this work, Ni@C@CNT composite as a highly effective catalyst for hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis of Ni-centered metal organic framework (Ni-MOF) doping with carbon nanotube (CNT). For comparison, Ni@C catalyst derived directly from Ni-MOF was also synthesized. The characterization results show that the doping of CNT promotes high dispersion of active sites and formation of Ni 3 C phase which has Pt-like catalytic activity. Therefore, the obtained Ni@C@CNT exhibited excellent activity in furfural hydrogenation (99.1% furfural conversion and 94.7% THFL yield at 120°C, 4 h, 4-MPa initial hydrogen pressure). Ni@C@CNT also shows good stability in reuse test. Current work presents a facile method for preparation of nonnoble metallic catalysts with high efficiency.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of biomass-derived furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol is recognized as one of the most versatile techniques for biomass valorization. However, the irreversible sintering of metal sites under the high-temperature reaction or during the coke removal regeneration process poses a serious concern. Herein, we present a silicalite-1-confined ultrasmall CuO structure (CuO@silicalite-1) and then compared its catalytic efficiency against conventional surface-supported CuO structure (CuO/silicalite-1) toward CTF of FAL with alcohols. Characterization results revealed that CuO nanoparticles encapsulated within the silicalite-1 matrix are ∼1.3 nm in size in CuO@silicalite-1, exhibiting better dispersion as compared to that in the CuO/silicalite-1. The CuO@silicalite-1, as a result, exhibited nearly 100-fold higher Cu-mass-based activity than the CuO/silicalite-1 counterpart. More importantly, the activity of the CuO@silicalite-1 catalyst can be regenerated via facile calcination to remove the surface-bound carbon deposits, unlike the CuO/silicalite-1 that suffered severe deactivation after use and cannot be effectively regenerated.

The hemicellulose component of biomass can be efficiently converted into furfural, a well-known biofuel precursor, via a hydrothermal process, in which the reaction medium plays an important role. In this work, the renewable butanone–water solvent mixture was employed in the conversion of C5 carbohydrates for the first time. Experiments combined with molecular dynamics simulation were carried out to study the organic solvent effects on furfural production from xylose. The reaction was catalyzed by an ionic liquid catalyst with Lewis acidity. Results showed that butanone could strengthen the intermolecular attractive force between water and xylose, leading to accelerated protonation and dehydration of xylose as well as enhanced furfural yield. On the other hand, butanone had a shielding effect for furfural against water, and therefore furfural could hardly be involved in side reactions. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the introduction of 80% butanone into the solvent resulted in a significant increase in furfural yield from 9% to 56% at 140 °C. Furthermore, other common model compounds and raw biomass were also tested under similar conditions, from which decent furfural yields of 46% and 36% were obtained from xylan and corn stalk, respectively.

In this study, sulfonated hierarchical sucrose-based activated carbon (SSAC) and N-doped SSAC (SSUAC) were synthesized using urea, calcium carbonate/potassium oxalate, and sulfanilic acid as the N-source, pore-forming, and sulfonating agent. The catalysts were evaluated for the catalytic production of furfural from wheat straw. The combined calcium carbonate template/potassium oxalate activation created abundant porosity for the activated carbon and guaranteed the successful sulfonation of activated carbon. Besides, although introducing urea improved the textural properties of sucrose-based activated carbon and graft of benzenesulfonic acid groups, it might be due to the severe blockage of pore channels, the catalytic performance of SSUAC was reverse inferior to that of SSAC. A fairly high furfural yield of 78.8% was achieved at 180 °C for 90 min over SSAC-800. Furthermore, the SSAC-800 catalyst exhibited reasonable recyclability for the production of furfural from xylan and wheat straw.

An acid-base bifunctional nanohybrid phenylphosphonic acid (PhP) - hafnium (1:1.5) was synthesized through assembly of PhP with HfCl 4 for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) using 2-propanol as both reaction solvent and hydrogen donor source. An FFA yield of 97.6 % with formation rate of 9760 μmol g −1 h −1 at 99.2 % FUR conversion was obtained with the reaction system at 120 °C for 2 h reaction time. Activation energy (Ea) was estimated to be 60.8 kJ/mol with respect to FUR concentration, which is comparable with or even lower than Ea values attained over metal catalysts. The pronounced catalytic activity of PhP-Hf (1:1.5) is attributed to its moderate acidity and relatively strong basicity. The PhP-Hf (1:1.5) catalyst was demonstrated to maintain its activity for five consecutive reuse cycles.

Selective hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds is mainly carried out by using high-pressure hydrogen in the presence of a precious or transition metal catalyst. Here, we describe a benign approach to efficiently catalyze the hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) over commercially available cesium carbonate using nontoxic and cheap polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as hydrogen source. Good to excellent FFA yields (≥90%) could be obtained at 25–80 °C by appropriate control of the catalyst dosage, reaction time, and the hydride amount. FUR-to-FFA hydrogenation was clarified to follow a pseudo-first order kinetics with low apparent activation energy of 20.6 kJ mol−1. Mechanistic insights manifested that PMHS was redistributed to H3SiMe, which acted as the active silane for the hydrogenation reactions. Importantly, this catalytic system was able to selectively reduce a wide range of aromatic aldehydes to the corresponding alcohols in good yields of 81–99% at 25–80 °C in 2–6 h.

Catalytic transformation of biomass-based furfural to value-added chemicals is an alternative route to the on-going fossil feedstock-based processes. This work describes catalytic aerobic oxidation of furfural to maleic anhydride, an important polymer starting material having a large market with H5PV2Mo10O40 and Cu(CF3SO3)2 catalysts. Under the optimized conditions, 54.0% yield of maleic anhydride can be achieved with about 7.5% yield of 5-acetoxyl-2(5H)-furanone formation. Notably, 5-acetoxyl-2(5H)-furanone is a highly value-added, biologically important intermediate that has been applied in pharmaceutical synthesis. The catalytic mechanism for furfural oxidation to maleic anhydride and 5-acetoxyl-2(5H)-furanone has been investigated in detail with identification of several key intermediates.
