Aluminum-Mediated Chloride Binding during Tricalcium Silicate Hydration: Toward Highly Durable and Sustainable Seawater-Mixed Cement Blends

Jianxiong Miao,Xing Ming,Miaomiao Wang,Zongjin Li

Durability and sustainability challenges have shaped the evolution of concrete over centuries, particularly in marine environments where on-site production using seawater and prolonged exposure in offshore and coastal regions are prevalent. Understanding chloride binding mechanisms during cement hydration and uncovering the molecular interactions between seawater ions and cement hydrates are thus crucial for advancing seawater-mixed concrete applications in marine infrastructures. Herein, we conducted ingeniously designed experiments and simulations to elucidate the complex hydration reactions of tricalcium silicate (C3S) in varied chloride solutions. The findings reveal distinct chloride binding responses of C3S pastes regulated by the presence of solution cations (Ca and Mg ions) and the addition of alumina nanoparticles (ANPs). In addition, these factors exhibit a synergistic effect on enhancing the formation of calcium-aluminosilicate-hydrates (C–(A–)S–H) and modifying their surface chemistry, thereby significantly improving chloride binding capacity. Ab initio calculations provide further insights into the critical roles of Ca/Mg ions and Al substitution in modulating the molecular structure and charge distribution of C–(A–)S–H. Ca and Mg ions act as electronic linkages, bridging surface O and adsorbed Cl ions. This effect is further amplified by Al substitution, which introduces cumulative negative charges around the bridge site and facilitates the formation of stable Al–O–M linkages that enhance chloride capture. Our outcomes advance the design of sustainable and durable seawater-mixed cement blends for resilient marine concrete infrastructures.

Effects of a novel amide-alcohol bearing admixture on the hydration, microstructure and strength of Portland cement

Bin Zeng,Wenjin Han,Shaojie Jia,Liwu Mo

Grinding aids and hydration accelerators (GA-HAs) are important admixtures for reducing energy consumption and enhancing cement performance, however, widely used alkanolamine GA-HAs have the drawback of only enhancing early strength while contributing little to the later strength development. In this study, a new amide-alcohol bearing admixture named Diethanolamine-Citrate (DC) was synthesized by using diethanolamine (DEA) and citric acid (CA). The addition of DC improved the particle size distribution of cement, delayed the initial setting time and shortened the final setting time of cement, and enhanced the fluidity of cement. The 28d compressive strengths of cement mortar added with DC were 16.4 % and 11.4 % higher than that of control group and cement mortar added with TEA, respectively. The incorporation of DC promoted the dissolution of cement, accelerated the overall hydration process of cement, increased the production of C-S-H and AFm, reduced the pore size and porosity, produced smaller (Sub-micron grains and nano-grains), tightly accumulated and partially amorphous CH. Moreover, CA is cheap and readily available industrial product that can reduce the cost of GA-HAs as synthetic feedstock . This study represents a breakthrough in preparing organic cement GA-HAs and provides a new approach to developing a novel type of amide-alcohol cement admixtures .

Rheological properties of cement paste with in-situ polymerization of sodium acrylate: Roles of polymerization and hydration

Binmeng Chen,Bin Xu,Zhaoyang Sun

In-situ polymerization modified cement paste shows a great potential in 3D concrete printing (3DCP) due to its enhanced rheological properties. Unlike direct adding conventional polymer, how in-situ polymerization and cement hydration synergistically regulate the rheology of cement paste with different monomer dosages remains unclear. Here, we investigate the rheological properties of in-situ polymerization modified cement paste with different dosages of sodium acrylate (SA) to reveal the roles of cement hydration and polymerization. When the monomer dosage is lower (1 % and 3 %), the polymerization inhibits the cement hydration without providing sufficient contribution to the structural development of cement paste, resulting in the decreased rheological properties, such as static/dynamic yield stress and structural build-up rate. On the contrary, once the monomer dosage reaches a higher level (5 % and 7 %), the resultant polymers can gradually form a network interwinding within the cement particles, thus leading to enhanced rheological properties, regardless of the more severely inhibited cement hydration.

The influence and mechanism exploration of hydration environment on the stability of natural clay crude oil emulsion

Zhang Shusong,Liu Tianyu,Chen Qingyuan,Xiao Bao,Xian Xiaokang,Ye Zhongbin

The study investigated the effects and mechanisms of clay content, emulsion water content, pH, and metal cations on clay-crude oil emulsions. The results indicate the following: 1) At a water content of 50 V/V%, montmorillonite can form emulsions with crude oil at different concentrations, with the highest stability observed at 5 wt% content. In contrast, chlorite, illite, and kaolinite cannot form emulsions at low concentrations. 2) Under acidic conditions, montmorillonite, illite, and chlorite cannot form emulsions with crude oil, or the emulsions are highly unstable. However, kaolinite forms more stable emulsions under acidic conditions. In alkaline environments, emulsions formed by all clay minerals exhibit increased stability. 3) The order of the effectiveness of different metal cations in reducing the stability of montmorillonite-crude oil emulsions is K+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+, while for chlorite, illite, and kaolinite, it is Mg2+ > Ca2+ > K+ > Na+. 4) The factors that influence the stability of clay-crude oil emulsions are the arrangement of clay particles in water and the dispersion capability of clay particles in water. The most significant influencing factor is the arrangement of clay particles in water.

Surface hydration of trimethylamine N–oxide/perovskites hybrid aerogel facilitates anti–fouling solar desalination and seawater electrocatalysis

Hao Zhang,Xueling Xu,Guangyao Zhang,Jie Yang,Yi Lu

Developing active and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is of great significance to generate oxygen and hydrogen by seawater electrolysis, which however remains some issues that high energy consumption and chloride corrosion. Here we pioneered a polymer/inorganic hybrid engineering strategy for achieving excellent salt resistance solar evaporation and oxygen evolution performance (OER). The La 0.9 Sr 0.1 CoO 3 /nickel foam–cellulosic aerogel (LSC1/NF–CA) was synthesized by engineering Trimethylamine N–oxide (TMAO) polymer brush onto the surface of hybrid aerogels composed of La 0.9 Sr 0.1 CoO 3 /Ni foam (LSC1/NF) and cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol, which has good hydrophilic features, intrinsic solar capture capacity, and stable OER performance in seawater. Benefiting from the synergy of solar desalination with surface hydration effect of TMAO, the LSC1/NF–CA presents a superior catalytic activity , requiring a lower overpotential of 341 mV and a tafel slope of 58.2 mV dec −1 at 10 mA cm −2 under 6.0  sun illumination . Our results establish a new strategy that can guide the design of stable and efficient polymer/inorganic hybrid catalysts, which shows a promising prospect as alternatives to noble metal–based catalysts for seawater splitting.

Effect of Nano-SiO2 on the Hydration, Microstructure, and Mechanical Performances of Solid Waste-Based Cementitious Materials

Zian Geng,Yu Zhang,Yiwen Zhou,Jiapeng Duan,Zhuqing Yu

Solid waste-based cementitious materials (SWBC) are composed of steel slag (SS), granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), fly ash (FA), desulfurization gypsum (DG), and Portland cement (PC). Currently, SWBC holds great potential as a sustainable building material; however, its low early compressive strength and volume expansion limit its range of application. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to enhance the mechanical properties and dimensional stability of SWBC by adding nano-SiO2, while also improving its resistance to chloride ions, thereby promoting its use in the field of sustainable building materials. A comprehensive experimental approach integrating mechanical performance testing, shrinkage analysis, and chloride diffusion coefficient evaluation was established, with the testing methods of thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The study found that adding nano-SiO2enhanced the nucleation of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) gel in hydrated SWBC, leading to improved compressive strength and reduced chloride permeability when SiO2addition was 0.5%. When the hydration period extends to 28 days, the modified SWBC achieves a compressive strength of 56 MPa. However, excessive nano-SiO2(≥1%) inhibited the long-term hydration of SWBC but had no significant effect on the final compressive strength.

Investigation on the effect of metal cation radius on montmorillonite hydration: Combining experiments with molecular dynamics simulation

Min Liu,Han Guo,Jiaqian Luo,Xiahui Gui,Yaowen Xing,Yijun Cao

Colloidal suspension stability is vitally important in industries, including wastewater treatment and mineral purification, and is greatly affected by electrostatic interaction and surface hydration in inorganic salt solutions. Combing the Static Multiple Light Scattering (SMLS), Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D), and Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation, the effect of cation radius on the montmorillonite hydration is elucidated. It is found that in 1 mol/L chloride solution, the montmorillonite suspension instability decreases in the order of CsCl > CaCl 2  > MgCl 2  > KCl > NaCl. QCM-D experiments in 1 mol/L chloride solution and MD simulation demonstrate that the mobility of strongly hydrated cations and water molecules on the montmorillonite surface, such as Na + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ , is depressed. The distribution of cation and oxygen of water molecules in the normal direction indicates that cation hydration modulates the hydration layer on montmorillonite. It could be concluded that strong hydration of small radius cations could enhance the hydration layer on the hydrophilic surface. The surface hydration is effectively depressed by weekly hydrated Cs + . Therefore, surface hydration depends on both surface hydrophilicity and cation hydration, which strongly corresponds to cation radius and valence. It provides insight into the clay suspension modulation in the engineering application and enrichment of natural elements.

Synergistic Modulation of Oxygen Vacancies and Proton Hydration in Iron-Based Perovskites for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

Qiuxia Feng,Liming Zhang,Xinjing Zhang,Zhongwei Cao,Hongbo Li,Peng Zhang,Xuefeng Zhu,Weishen Yang

Proton-conducting ceramics have emerged as a transformative solution for next-generation solid oxide fuel cells for their superior protonic conductivity and high fuel efficiency at intermediate-to-low temperatures. Cobalt-based perovskite oxides stand out as the dominant cathode materials for proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) due to their unparalleled oxygen reduction reaction activity. However, their implementation is constrained by limited natural reserves and high production costs. To address these challenges, we developed a series of cobalt-free BaFe0.8Zr0.2–xGdxO3−δ (BFZGx, x = 0–0.20) cathodes for low-cost PCFCs. Gd doping simultaneously enhanced the oxygen vacancy concentration and proton hydration capacity while also boosting the total conductivity, with an optimal doping amount of 0.1. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate the outstanding performance of the BFZGx electrodes, with BaFe0.8Zr0.1Gd0.1O3−δ achieving a 1.93-fold power density compared to the undoped counterpart. This work establishes Gd-doped BaFe0.8Zr0.2O3−δ perovskites as promising high-performance and cost-effective cathode materials for PCFCs.

Study on the dispersion, adsorption and early hydration behavior of cement pastes containing multi-armed polycarboxylate superplasticizers

Kun Wang,Hao Pang,Hao Huang,Linxia Song,Jianheng Huang,Yangyang Zhao

Multi-armed polycarboxylate superplasticizers (SPCEs) were prepared via esterification-copolymerization in aqueous media from various polyols (including glycerol, xylitol and mannitol), acrylic acid (AA) and isopentenyl oxy polyethylene glycol ether (TPEG). The structures of the SPCEs (SPCE-prop, SPCE-pent and SPCE-hex bearing three, five and six arms, respectively) were characterized by NMR and GPC. The influences of the SPCEs on the fluidity, adsorption and early hydration behaviors of cementitious systems were investigated in detail and are discussed herein. Experimental results indicated that as the number of pendant arms increased, the dispersion performance, compactness of the cement microstructures and set retarding effects increased initially and subsequently decreased (SPCE-pent offered the best performance). This effect was primarily due to the synergistic effects of steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsions. Further results indicated that SPCE-pent can be used as a high-range delivery admixture to produce high performance concrete.

Effect of aluminum impurities within water glass on the compressive strength and hydration of alkali-activated slag

Yaocheng Wang,Xu Li,Yu Jin,Chaoqun Zeng

To address the significant CO 2 emissions of commercial water glass, the utilization of alkali activators prepared from waste glass is a viable solution. However, it is important to note that these activators frequently contain aluminum (Al) impurities, which have been reported to affect the initial dissolution behavior of slag. But the impact of Al impurities on the compressive strength and hydration of alkali-activated slag remains inadequately understood. Consequently, the compressive strength, hydration, hydration products, calcium aluminosilicate hydrate gel properties, and pore structure of slag activated by water glass containing different concentrations of Al impurities were investigated. The findings reveal that Al impurities in water glass cause a reduction and delay in the second exothermic peak, regardless of slag composition. Despite this, their long-term influence on pore structure, compressive strength, and phase assemblage is minimal and can be considered negligible across different types of slag.

Enhanced dissolution rate of magnesium hydroxide via magnesia/ammonium acetate hydration system: statistical optimization and possible mechanism

Xiao-Jia Tang,Zhong-Yuan Du,Heng-chao Chuang,Yi-Min Zhu,Yang-yuan Ji,Xiao-Yi Li,Yu-Zhe Zhao,Hai-Bo Kuang

BACKGROUND The dissolubility of magnesium hydroxide is often the main factor limiting its application effect in the environmental field, and the dissolution rate of magnesium hydroxide during its synthesis is also worthy of attention. In this paper, response surface methodology was used to synthesize magnesium hydroxide with different dissolution rates through a magnesium oxide/ammonium acetate hydration system, and the possible formation mechanism as well as dissolution performance is discussed. RESULTS Compared with the hydration temperature and time, the concentration of ammonium acetate has a more significant effect on the dissolution rate of hydrated magnesium hydroxide. A maximum dissolution rate of 43.8 ± 0.3 mmol min −1 mol −1 magnesium hydroxide could be obtained when the working factors were ammonium acetate concentration 15 g L –1 , hydration temperature 75.5 °C and time 112 min. CONCLUSION The correlation study between structural characterization and the dissolution test shows that the complexation and replacement of acetate, in situ generation and release of ammonia appear to have some critical effects on magnesium hydroxide crystallization behaviour and induce the formation of thin, curved and defective structures. Crystals with such structures have been reported to have a higher dissolution activity. The results of this study provide an indication for screening hydration synthetic agents of high-dissolution-rate magnesium hydroxide. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI)
