One-step treated wood by using natural source phytic acid and uracil for enhanced mechanical properties and flame retardancy

Lichen Zhang,Deqi Yi,Jianwei Hao,Ming Gao

Wood has always maintained an important position in construction engineering and decoration due to its unique excellent characteristics, but its flammability has limited various application. In this study, phytic acid (PA) derived from plant seeds and uracil (U) derived from ribonucleic acid (RNA) were prepared as water solution, and natural wood just through physical infiltration in the water solution to obtain wood/PA/uracil (flame retardant [FR] wood), which was environmentally friendly, high strength and fire-resistant. The three-point bending test performance was basically unchanged, compressive strength was increased by 15.3%. The peak heat release rate, total heat release, smoke production rate, and total smoke production of FR wood were reduced up to 41%, 30%, 61%, 56%, respectively, compared with the natural wood. Limiting oxygen index value of FR wood can reach 31.8%, and UL-94 V-0 rating can be reached. These results suggested that wood/PA/uracil could be promising green construction applications.

A hybrid sponge with guanidine and phytic acid enriched surface for integration of antibiofouling and uranium uptake from seawater

Haocheng Yang,Xuejie Guo,Rongrong Chen,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Jing Yu,Cunguo Lin,Jun Wang,Milin Zhang

In seawater, biofouling caused by marine organisms’ adhesion on the surface of adsorbent would lead to a significant decrease in adsorption property. Herein, a poly (guanidine-hexamethylenediamine-phytic acid) hybrid sponge (PGHPA-PDF-MF) was synthesized for integration of uranium uptake from seawater with antibiofouling property. The PGHPA-PDF-MF sponge exhibited the superhydrophilicity and retained nearly 29 kPa of compression stress after 1000 cycles. Noteworthy, the PGHPA-PDF-MF sponge showed obviously anti-algae growth behavior (88% cell death rate) due to its guanidine and phytic acid groups, as well as inhibit adhesion of algae ( Nitzschia ) and mussels ( Mytilus edulis ) by the co-effect of its function groups, 3D porous sponge structure and superhydrophilic surface. The saturated U-uptake amount of PGHPA-PDF-MF sponge was high as 531.9 mg/g at nearly seawater pH (~8.0). At 5th cycle, the sponge still had superior reusability and maintained a high removal amount (200.7 mg/g). The uranium uptake amount of PGHPA-PDA-MF sponge was 44.75 mg/g with 90.9% of removal efficiency in uranium and Nitzschia contained artificial seawater at 7 days. Furthermore, more than 80% of uranium removal rate for the PGHPA-PDF-MF sponge in natural seawater (Bohai, China) also showed its great potentiality for actual application.

Eco-friendly flame retardant coating deposited on cotton fabrics from bio-based chitosan, phytic acid and divalent metal ions

Zhihao Zhang,Zhongying Ma,Qian Leng,Yuhua Wang

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, the greening of flame retardants has become an inevitable choice for flame retardant technology. Bio-based materials have the advantages of wide source, recyclability and green environmental protection, and have received extensive attention. In this work, chitosan and phytic acid as intumescent flame retardant system and metal ion as a synergist were built on cotton fabrics to achieve efficient flame retardancy by facile dip-pad-dry process. Microscale combustion calorimetry results manifested that the heat release rate values of coated samples were lower than that of uncoated samples. The peak heat release rate and total heat release of uncoated samples were 333.1 W/g and 13.1 kJ/g, while these values of samples coated CH/PA/Ba/PA were 129.1 W/g and 5.4 kJ/g respectively and char residues also were increased sharply owing to the phosphate groups promote the formation of char layer covering the surface of the cotton fabrics, which can prevent heat transfer. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that there were much more bubbles on the surface of fibers for the coated CH/PA/Ba/PA after horizontal flame tests. The results indicated that the synergy of the intumescent flame retardant system was achieved by the addition of metal ions which could accelerate the produce of a large number of nonflammable gases. Horizontal flame test and limit oxygen index (LOI) test showed that the burning rate and LOI values of samples coated CH/PA/Ba/PA, CH/PA /CH/PA, PA/Ba/PA/Ba were 1.5 mm/s and 22.0, 2.0 mm/s and 20.2 and 2.5 mm/s and 18.0 respectively, compared to 3.3 mm/s and 16.2 of uncoated samples. The samples with intumescent flame retardant system and metal ions (CH/PA/Ba/PA) had best flame retardant performance. Moreover its weight gain (5.2%) was less than that (10.7%) of the sample only with intumescent flame retardant system (CH/PA /CH/PA). The less weight gain had less effect on the softness of cotton fabrics. As a result, the coating is expected to be applied in practice.

Comparison of three water-soluble polyphosphate tripolyphosphate, phytic acid, and sodium hexametaphosphate as crosslinking agents in chitosan nanoparticle formulation

Zechun Sang,Jin Qian,Jiahua Han,Xiaoyong Deng,Jianliang Shen,Guowen Li,Yan Xie

Chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) prepared by ionic gelation with tripolyphosphate (TPP) are a promising drug carrier for mucosal administration due to their remarkable mucoadhesivity and biocompatibility. In this work, CS-NPs were obtained by an ionotropic gelation method with polyphosphate crosslinking agents of tripolyphosphate (TPP), phytic acid (PA), and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP). The drug encapsulation efficiency, in vitro drug release behavior, mucoadhesivity, and cytotoxicity of the CS-NPs were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the high concentration of H + ion would impede the formation of CS-TPP-NPs but promote the formation of CS-PA-NPs and CS-SHMP-NPs. The obtained CS-NPs were approximately spherical in shape, biocompatible confirmed by the cytotoxicity test, and bioadhesive particles with a narrow diameter distribution (0.20 ± 0.02 of polydispersity index) less than 200 nm. The encapsulation efficiency of myricetin (MYR) in CS-NPs crosslinked by PA and SHMP (67.3 ± 0.4 % and 62.2 ± 0.2 %) was significantly higher than that in CS-NPs crosslinked by TPP (47.7 ± 0.1 %) ( p < 0.05); their drug release rate (43.7 ± 5.1 % and 44.0 ± 3.7 %) was also significantly slower than that of MYR-CS-NPs crosslinked by TPP (103.4 ± 4.0 %) ( p < 0.05). Furthermore, a strong mucoadhesiveness of the CS-NPs crosslinked by PA was shown by a fast increase of the turbidity value and a sharp decrease of the zeta potential in the mucin solution test.

Fabricating carbon-nanotubes-based porous foam for superoxide electrochemical sensing through one-step hydrothermal process induced by phytic acid

Xuan Cai,Kaicha Chen,Zhenxing Wang,Wenqian Sun,Hongli Zhao,Huanhuan Zhang,Huilan Chen,Minbo Lan

The detection of superoxide anions (O 2 •− ) is widely considered as a potential way for cancer diagnosis and the development of enzyme-mimic catalysts is the main challenge in the establishment of electrochemical sensors for O 2 •− sensing in real samples. Here we present a novel enzyme- and metal-free electrochemical catalyst for superoxide (O 2 •− ) sensing based on the widely-used carbon nanotubes (CNT). Through a one-step hydrothermal process induced by phytic acid (PA), CNT-based porous foam (PACNTF) was successfully obtained. Characterizations demonstrated the enhanced defect and disorder degree of PACNTF after PA treatment, which leaded to the increased active sites of PACNTF for electron transfer and the adhesion of O 2 •− during the electrochemical process. As a result, the PACNTF presented higher conductivity and larger current response toward O 2 •− sensing when compared with CNT precursor and CNTF without PA treatment. The sensitivity of PACNTF/SPCE was calculated to be 1230 μA cm -2  mM -1 in the linear range of 0–193.6 μM (R 2  = 0.965) and 373 μA cm -2  mM -1 in the linear range of 193.6–1153.6 μM (R 2  = 0.995) with a limit of detection of 0.16 μM (S/N = 3). Further, the PACNTF/SPCE presented fast response toward cell-released O 2 •− stimulated by Zymosan A. The above results indicated that the fabricated sensor holds potential usage in biological samples.

Phytic acid layer template-assisted deposition of TiO2 film on titanium: Surface electronic properties, super-hydrophilicity and bending strength

Xuan Zhang,Yingqi Chen,Huili Lei,Sheng Zhao,Fei Han,Xia Xiang,Yuancong Zhao,Nan Huang,Guojiang Wan

Titanium dioxide film has received a great deal of attention, because of its excellent potentials and implications, in a variety of fields. Practically, the film is required to be well mechanically blended with the substrate (e.g. good compliance or flexibility) together with its surface properties to accomplish multiple functions. In this work, phytic acid (PA) layer template-assisted deposition of thin TiO 2 film was implemented on titanium substrate to produce a good combination of surface properties and bending strength . Relatively smooth, homogenous and thin (ca. 800   nm) anatase TiO 2 films were obtained on the PA pre-templated Ti substrate. Significantly enhanced photoluminescence was observed on the PA template-deposited TiO 2 as compared to the direct deposited TiO 2 . This is correlated with its higher carrier density in the space charge layer as disclosed by the Mott–Schottky investigation. Likewise, the prepared TiO 2 films are super-hydrophilic (with water contact angle less than 5°), which is credited to the higher polar contribution of surface energy. Moreover, the PA template-deposited TiO 2 film withstood plastic deformation up to 180° angle bending without failure. This template-assisted deposition of TiO 2 film via surface-immobilized organic layer on rigid substrate suggests a promising route to enhance both its mechanical and physical performances.

Fabrication of a novel laccase biosensor based on silica nanoparticles modified with phytic acid for sensitive detection of dopamine

Kuai Wang,Pengcheng Liu,Yuhang Ye,Juan Li,Wenbo Zhao,Xiaohua Huang

The development of novel nanomaterials for the ultra-sensitive detection of biological species has received great attention. Herein we report the design and synthesis of phytic acid functionalized silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 -PA NPs) and their biomedical sensor application for sensitive detection of dopamine. The SiO 2 -PA NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The biocompatibility between SiO 2 -PA NPs and laccase was also investigated by circular dichroism (CD) spectra. Moreover, the novel laccase biosensor based on SiO 2 -PA NPs for sensitive detection of dopamine (DA) was fabricated, and the electrochemical properties of this laccase biosensor were investigated. The results showed the biosensor had good electrocatalytic activity toward DA with a wide linear range (0.99–103.10   μM) and a low detection limit 0.26   ±   0.003   μM. It can be attributed to the good biocompatibility and nano-effect of SiO 2 -PA NPs. The biosensor was successfully tested for determination of DA in pharmaceutical and rabbit blood serum samples. The development of biomimetic materials science will offer a novel platform for application to substance detection.

Covalent immobilization of phytic acid on Mg by alkaline pre-treatment: Corrosion and degradation behavior in phosphate buffered saline

Yingqi Chen,Guojiang Wan,Juan Wang,Sheng Zhao,Yuancong Zhao,Nan Huang

Magnesium-based materials are promising in biodegradable implants, but the proper corrosion control is a challenge. Phytic acid has potential as a coating on Mg to control the degradation rate. An alkaline pre-treatment process is implemented to form the hydroxyl group on the Mg surface and covalently immobilize phytic acid. The surface-immobilized phytic acid molecules chelate with Mg to form a dense and homogenous protective coating. The coated Mg exhibits a smaller corrosion current density and degradation rate as compared to bare Mg in the phosphate buffered saline.

Phytic acid induced three-dimensional graphene for the enrichment of phthalate esters from bottled water and sports beverage samples

Xinyu Liang,Juntao Wang,Juanjuan Wu,Qiuhua Wu,Chun Wang,Zhi Wang

A three-dimensional graphene was synthesized through a hydrothermal reaction of graphene oxide with phytic acid. The microstructure and morphology of the phytic acid induced three-dimensional graphene were investigated by nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. With a large surface area and three-dimensional structure, the graphene was used as the solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction of phthalate esters from bottled water and sports beverage samples before high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis. The results indicated that the graphene was efficient for the solid-phase extraction of phthalate esters. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) of the method for the analytes were 0.02–0.03 ng/mL for the water samples and 0.03–0.15 ng/mL for the sports beverage sample. The limits of quantitation (S/N = 9) for the analytes were 0.06–0.09 ng/mL for water samples and 0.09–0.45 ng/mL for sports beverage sample. The calibration curves for the phthalate esters by the method had a good linearity from 0.1 to 80.0 ng/mL with correlation coefficients larger than 0.9997. The recoveries of the analytes for the method fell in the range of 86.7–116.2% with the relative standard deviations between 1.5 and 6.8%.

Effect of zinc ion on the microstructure and electrochemical behavior of phytic acid based conversion coatings on Q235 steels

Xiang Gao,Weihua Li,Ru Yan,Huiwen Tian,Houyi Ma

Phytic acid conversion coating and Zn 2   + doped phytic acid conversion coating were fabricated on Q235 steels by immersing the steel samples in corresponding coating bath for 600   s. The changes of coating formation process and adsorption action of phytic acid on steel surface due to addition of Zn 2   + in coating bath were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy images exhibited that phytic acid conversion coating was porous network structure consisting of needle-like crystals, but Zn 2   + doped phytic acid conversion coating was one uniform layer except some fine cracks. Energy dispersive spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic characterizations demonstrated that the roles of Zn 2   + during the coating formation process could conclude to two sides: (i) Zn 2   + could promote the adsorption reaction of phytic acid to form one thicker phytic acid conversion coating on steel surface; (ii) a part of Zn 2   + could form ZnO and aggregation of the complex of phytic acid, Zn and Fe and doped to the formed conversion coatings. And the electrochemical measurements results showed that the corrosion protection efficiency of Zn 2   + doped phytic acid conversion coating was higher than that of phytic acid conversion coating.

Synthesis of a novel electrode material containing phytic acid-polyaniline nanofibers for simultaneous determination of cadmium and lead ions

Hui Huang,Wencai Zhu,Xiaochun Gao,Xiuyu Liu,Houyi Ma

The development of nanostructured conducting polymers based materials for electrochemical applications has attracted intense attention due to their environmental stability, unique reversible redox properties, abundant electron active sites, rapid electron transfer and tunable conductivity. Here, a phytic acid doped polyaniline nanofibers based nanocomposite was synthesized using a simple and green method, the properties of the resulting nanomaterial was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). A glassy carbon electrode modified by the nanocomposite was evaluated as a new platform for the simultaneous detection of trace amounts of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The synergistic contribution from PANI nanofibers and phytic acid enhances the accumulation efficiency and the charge transfer rate of metal ions during the DPASV analysis. Under the optimal conditions, good linear relationships were obtained for Cd 2+ in a range of 0.05–60 μg L −1 , with the detection limit ( S / N  = 3) of 0.02 μg L −1 , and for Pb 2+ in a range of 0.1–60 μg L −1 , with the detection limit ( S / N  = 3) of 0.05 μg L −1 . The new electrode was successfully applied to real water samples for simultaneous detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ with good recovery rates. Therefore, the new electrode material may be a capable candidate for the detection of trace levels of heavy metal ions .

Design of mechanically robust, recyclable, multi-stimuli-responsive shape memory elastomers based on biological phytic acid and cuttlefish ink

Jiarong Huang,Xiao Wang,Haonan Wu,Shuping Xiao,Yong Liang,Huiwen Yu,Baiping Xu,Wenhua Xu,Lingcao Tan

Facilitating the utilization of biomass in the rubber field is a facile strategy to reduce environmental pollution and the carbon emission. Herein, biological phytic acid (PA) was served as an eco-friendly curing agent, and cuttlefish ink (CI) was acted as a photothermal trigger switch to fabricate multi-stimuli-responsive shape memory biobased epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) with mechanical robustness and recyclable ability. ENR was vulcanized by PA via the ring-opening reaction between phosphate groups of PA and epoxy group of ENR, leading to the construction of an impeccable cross-linking network and an adjustable T g gradient, which endowed the elastomers with improved mechanical properties and shape memory effect. Meanwhile, the topology rearrangement occurred at elevated temperatures relied on phosphate transesterification, leading to excellent thermo-activated recyclable ability and reconfigurable shape memory performance of the elastomers. Additionally, CI acted as reinforced filler to enhance the ENR matrix, enabling elastomers to achieve a robust tensile strength of 21.4 MPa and tensile toughness of 30.4 MJ/m 3 , which was nearly 26.8 times and 11.3 times of the neat ENR, respectively. Exhilaratingly, CI also acted as photothermal trigger switch for the response to near-infrared light and sun, which realized the remotely multistage shape memory performance, demonstrating the potential application of ENR in the field of actuators without environmental pollution.
