Heavy oil production and transportation are often restricted by high viscosity, poor mobility, and unfavorable low-temperature flow behavior, especially in waxy systems. While conventional polymer-based additives improve flow, they suffer from inadequate thermal stability, poor dispersibility in complex crude oil matrices, and insufficient multifunctionality. To address these issues, a nano-SiO2-based organic-inorganic hybrid flow improver, denoted as NSDA, was synthesized via in situ free-radical copolymerization of styrene, docosyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, and acrylamide on 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (KH-570)-modified silica surfaces. Characterization revealed that this core-shell nanohybrid structure significantly improved thermal stability and oil-phase dispersibility, maintaining nanoscale dispersion in xylene. A remarkable viscosity reduction rate of 90.2% was achieved, accompanied by a substantial pour point depression of 11 °C using only 0.5 wt% of NSDA in Liaohe heavy oil. This dual-functional performance is mainly attributed to the combined effects of the robust nano-SiO2core and the multifunctional polymer shell, Specifically, the performance is driven by synergistic wax crystal regulation at low temperatures, alongside weakened intermolecular associations among polar heavy components and nanoparticle-assisted dispersion that govern viscosity reduction.

The widely used SiO 2 and TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) can accumulate in industrial wastewaters , thereby posing challenge to biological wastewater treatment processes. In this work, the performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactors fed with wastewater containing 50 mg L −1 SiO 2 and TiO 2 NPs were investigated. The results showed that the granules could resist the NPs in wastewater (no disintegration of granules was observed). SiO 2 NPs had a negative effect on the settleability of granules, with the SVI 30 increased by 64.5% and protein secretion decreased by 29.9%. To the contrary, the settleability of granules was improved in the presence of TiO 2 NPs due to the increase of the protein secretion. Possibly because of the compact and layered structure of granules, in the presence of both types of NPs, no obvious reduction of the overall removal efficiency of organics was found, and nanoparticle-resistant strains were enriched. The overall nitrification and denitrification efficiencies were hardly affected by SiO 2 NPs while significantly inhibited by TiO 2 NPs. Some functional genera, such as Hyphomicrobium and Acidovorax , showed growth inhibition with TiO 2 NPs, which might be responsible for the reduction of nitrification and denitrification efficiencies.

In order to reduce silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) agglomeration, improve the dispersity of SiO 2 NPs in the matrix of polyethersulfone (PES) composite membrane, the poly (acrylic acid) grafted SiO 2 NPs (SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs) are beforehand synthesized via surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP). PES/SiO 2 -g-PAA organic-inorganic composite membranes are convenient fabricated by blending PES matrix with the as-synthesized SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs via the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and surface scanning electron microscope (SEM) results confirm that the well dispersed SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs tend to migrate toward the membrane top surfaces. As a result, the composite membrane exhibited the highest pure water flux and oil flux around 233.72 and 97.29 L/m 2 h, which equal to 3.6 times and 8.8 times of unmodified PES membrane respectively. The flux recovery rate increased from 45.74% to 77.12%, suggesting the fouling-resistance of the composite membranes was greatly improved. Furthermore, the SiO 2 -g-PAA NPs exhibit excellent stability in the membrane matrix benefit from the interaction between PAA polymer chains and PES. In addition, the reactive PAA chains on the membrane surface provide a platform for further functionalization.

Marine fouling can cause a series of hazards in the marine industrial field, and the traditional antifouling methods do not fulfill the green antifouling requirement. Herein, a novel DA/PEI/SiO 2 /antibacterial peptide antifouling coating was prepared by a multi-modification approach. Initially, the nanocoatings were prepared by depositing DA, PEI, and SiO 2 on the dopamine (DA)-modified 304 stainless steel (SS) surface, and finally, the DA/PEI/SiO 2 /AMPs composite coatings were prepared by grafting antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). The surfaces of SS before and after modification were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurement, and 3D optical profilometer. SSN-1 cells were used to evaluate the cytocompatibility of the modified surface. The results revealed that the cells cultured on the modified surface still maintained a good adhesion morphology, demonstrating the superior cytocompatibility of the composite coating. The anti-biofilm and antimicrobial properties of the modified samples were evaluated using Vibrio natriegens . The antibacterial efficiency of SS-DA/PEI/SiO 2 surfaces before and after AMPs modification reached 78.39 and 95.90%, and anti-biofilm efficiency of AMPs modified surface achieved 72.87% corresponding to 44.19% of SS-DA/PEI/SiO 2 . The successful grafting of AMPs improved the antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of the modified sample surfaces. Electrochemical and stability tests indicated that the modified sample surfaces exhibited excellent corrosion resistance and antifouling stability properties. This research could provide a novel green anti-fouling and anti-corrosion strategy for the marine industry and other related fields.

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) is attractive for water decontamination and catalyst is a core element. However, it is difficult to maintain high efficiency and stability of catalysts under stern conditions. In this study, we proposed Mn-loaded C-SiO 2 -Framework (Mn-CSF) which contained stable silica core and robust carbon shell for efficient catalytic ozonation. The pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant for oxalic acid removal of Mn-CSF catalytic ozonation was 160 % and 875 % higher than those of Mn-SiO 2 and pristine CSF, respectively. Mn-CSF was also proven effective in gasification wastewater treatment , where the COD was decreased to 46 mg·L −1 , 37 % lower than that of Mn-SiO 2 . These results indicated that the graphitization carbon layer and Mn significantly enhanced the activity of the catalyst. Furthermore, a fulvic-like component and a protein-like component were recognized through 3D-EEM in coal gasification wastewater. It was proven that Mn-CSF catalytic ozonation exhibited higher fulvic-like component and protein-like component removal compared with ozonation. Moreover, O 2 − and 1 O 2 were identified to be responsible for organic degradation in this research. Sufficient external specific surface area and porous structure were important for complex wastewater treatment. Specifically, external specific surface area could enhance the degradation of macromolecular organics while porous structures were vital for smaller molecular pollutant removal . The results highlighted that Mn-CSF was a promising HCO catalyst for advanced wastewater treatment, and this study provided evidence of relationship between structure of catalysts and HCO efficiency.

This work presents the influence of glass matrix SiO 2 –B 2 O 3 –NaF on the formation of near-infrared (NIR)-shielding functional units in energy-saving glass windows. The structural analyses by XRD , XPS , and Raman confirmed that the NIR-shielding performance is insensitive to SiO 2 or B 2 O 3 glass network formers but is significantly impacted by the concentration of NaF. This is because the presence of a reasonable amount of NaF provides the much-needed sodium for the formation of NIR-shielding functional units Na 5 W 14 O 44 but too much NaF (>22 mol.%) can inhibit the formation of Na 5 W 14 O 44 by transforming the W– O –W chain in the interconnected [WO 6 ] and [WO 4 ] polyhedrons into W–O - bonds. By adjusting NaF to the optimal level (16 mol.%) and adding only a small amount of H 2 WO 4 (1.9 mol.%) as the tungsten source in the raw materials, excellent optical properties and thermal insulation performance have been achieved in the produced bulk glass, with a high transmission of 65.8% at 550 nm in the visible light region and a low transmission of 6.6% at 1550 nm in the NIR region. This performance is much better than soda lime glass and ITO glass and is comparable to cesium tungsten bronze-based membrane coated glass. This study paves a way for glass composition design to achieve high NIR-shielding performance with the minimum amount of tungsten source, leading to cost-effective glass fabrication and enhanced mechanical strength of energy-saving glass windows.

In this work, we fabricated a 300 nm-sized silver-coated silica (SiO 2 @Ag) SERS substrate. Based on SiO 2 @Ag, we designed SiO 2 @Ag@molecular imprinted polymers (SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs) to realize selectively detection of amoxicillin by coating a molecular imprinted layer averagely thinner than 10 nm on SiO 2 @Ag. The as-prepared SERS-active substrate demonstrates excellent enhancement for amoxicillin as well as the enhancement factors were 1.63 × 10 6 of SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs and 2.97 × 10 5 of SiO 2 @Ag, respectively. The SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs core–shell hybrids as SERS substrates and the minimum detectable concentration of amoxicillin was as low as 2.7 × 10 -9 M, and the detection limit of SiO 2 @Ag was 2.7 × 10 -7 M. The linear relationship between intensities of characteristic peaks and concentrations of amoxicillin was established. Both SiO 2 @Ag and SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs substrates were highly sensitive and could achieve qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of amoxicillin in aqueous media with good linear correlations. Based on the above, SiO 2 @Ag@MIPs will be conducive to detecting actual samples and expanding the practical application.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) features a unique fingerprint spectrum for fast and highly sensitive non-destructive detection without sample pretreatment. Aiming at the problem of few “hot spot” and uneven distribution of traditional SERS substrate, in this work, a surface-enhanced Raman substrate of silica/carbon nanotubes/silver nanoparticles (SiO 2 /CNTs/AgNPs) with high on all sides and low in the middle was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The AgNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the average diameter was 38 nm to 63 nm. The substrate exhibited high sensitivity, stability, and uniformity with a detection limit of 10 −12 M for rhodamine 6G (R6G). Furthermore, we conducted an in-depth research on the enhancement contribution of the substrate by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD); the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, the substrate was used for the detection of phenol red in water; the results showed that the Raman intensity was exponentially related to the concentration of phenol red solution with the coefficient of determination R 2 = 0.99991, which provided a new method for detecting water pollutants. The popular magnetic material of flaky carbonyl iron (FCI) is unfortunately vulnerable to electrochemical corrosion when exposed to a salty and foggy environment. This work reports on a sol-gel method that successfully modifies FCI particles, using lithium silicate (Li 2 SiO 3 ), poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS), and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560), to synthesize Fe@SiO 2 @KH560@PDMS hybrid composite, related to its organic–inorganic hybrid coatings. The favorable hydrophobicity of organic–inorganic hybrid coatings with the static contact angle of 120° impeded the contact between corrosive medium and FCI core. The results of electrochemical experiments also confirmed its excellent corrosion resistance , since the corrosion potential E corr was positively shifted to 0.01 V, and the corrosion current I corr was three orders of magnitude lower than that of the unmodified FCI particles. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicates that the presence of hybrid coatings also improved the thermal stability of the produced material towards oxidation . Furthermore, the results of molecular dynamics simulation reveal that the hybrid layer inhibits the diffusion of corrosive medium.

Efforts have been devoted to exploring the effective composite catalysts for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx by CO (CO-SCR) using Fe-Cu bimetal oxide (Fe2Cu1) as the active component and rice husk ash (RHA), amorphous SiO2, and activated carbon (AC) as supports. The results showed that the beneficial role of RHA as a catalyst support for CO-SCR was primarily reliant on amorphous SiO2 in RHA and not on AC. Both Fe2Cu1/RHA and Fe2Cu1/amorphous SiO2 catalysts exhibited the best catalytic performance of CO-SCR, which had good stability, wide active temperature range, high conversion ratio, 100% N2 selectivity, and superior resistance to O2, SO2, and H2O (g). The CO and NOx conversion ratios of Fe2Cu1/amorphous SiO2 could reach up to approximately 100% from 100 to 500 °C. The excellent SCR performance was associated with the large specific surface area and good structural stability of amorphous SiO2, the uniform distribution of active sites, dual redox cycle of Fe2O3 and CuO species, and many surface-adsorbed oxygen species, which made amorphous SiO2-based catalysts highly competitive for application in the SCR process. This research provides the underlying insights for the improvement of industrial application to realize ″non-ammonia SCR″ technology with near-zero NOx/CO emissions synergistically at low temperatures.

Chemical looping methane oxidative coupling is a promising method to directly convert methane to C 2 products but is limited by the trade-off between CH 4 conversion and C 2 selectivity. Here, we develop a series of TiO 2 doped Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 for chemical looping methane oxidative coupling and investigate the underline mechanism for the enhanced performance. The results show that 5 wt% TiO 2 doped Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 exhibited 31.2% CH 4 conversion, which is 1.68 times as large as that of Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 , without significantly decreasing C 2 selectivity (~70.3%). Pulse experiments show that TiO 2 improves the bulk oxygen diffusion, providing more surface oxygen to convert methane, thus leading to enhanced CH 4 conversion. O 1 s spectra manifests that the active oxygen content on the surface was not significantly increased by TiO 2 dopant , thus TiO 2 dopant has little effect on C 2 selectivity. Therefore, 5 wt% TiO 2 doped Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 shows high chemical looping methane oxidative coupling performance. The explored mechanism in this work can be extended to design more oxygen carriers to enhance the chemical looping reactions.

2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) is a multifunctional intermediate, which can be used in drugs, functional polymers, fluorescent materials and surfactants. In this paper, a TEMPO-assisted magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 -NH 2 -Cu(II) catalytic system was developed for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran. The structure of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 -NH 2 -Cu(II) was double-layer shell-core spherical structure with uniform ordered mesoporous on the surface, amino groups and Cu were evenly distributed in the outer mesoporous. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, TEM, EDS, SEM, XRD, BET and VSM. The effects of reaction conditions were investigated in detail. The conversion of HMF was 98.9% and the highest DFF yield was 92.4% under atmospheric oxygen in toluene solvent. The catalytic activity did not decrease significantly after 5 cycles. The catalytic system had good substrate adaptability for benzyl alcohols and aromatic alcohols with satisfactory yield of corresponding aldehydes (91.3–100%). A possible reaction mechanism was also proposed and found that bis(μ-hydroxy) double copper (II) may be the active reactant in oxidation reaction. The system provides a promising industrialized preparation method for DFF.
