Construction of S-scheme 0D/2D heterostructures for enhanced visible-light-driven CO2 reduction

Shuaiqi Gong,Xue Teng,Yanli Niu,Xuan Liu,Mingze Xu,Chen Xu,Lvlv Ji,Zuofeng Chen

Zero-dimensional quantum dots (QDs) and two-dimensional nanosheets represent two kinds of distinctive materials with unique properties. Here, we describe the fabrication of step-scheme ( i.e. S-scheme) 0D/2D heterostructure with InVO 4 QDs and g -C 3 N 4 (CN) ultrathin nanosheets for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The formation of S-scheme heterostructure facilitates the separation of electron-hole pairs and reduces the recombination of charge carriers. Moreover, the light-absorption edge of InVO 4 /CN is extended to 605 nm because of the strong visible light absorption of InVO 4 QDs. The 0D/2D hybrid enables highly selective photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO (93.3 %) at a decent rate of 69.8 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation. Density functional theory (DFT) results suggest that the formation of InVO 4 /CN heterostructure can enhance CO 2 adsorption/activation, stabilize COOH* intermediates and allow rapid CO desorption as the major product. This study opens up a new possibility for construction of novel S-scheme heterostructure for photocatalytic applications.

0D/2D Co3O4/TiO2 Z-Scheme heterojunction for boosted photocatalytic degradation and mechanism investigation

Yuting Wang,Chengzhang Zhu,Gancheng Zuo,Yang Guo,Wei Xiao,Yuxuan Dai,Jijie Kong,Xiaoming Xu,Yuxuan Zhou,Aming Xie,Cheng Sun,Qiming Xian

The development of stable, efficient photocatalyst for environmental antibiotics degradation is great significant and remains a major challenge. Herein, zero dimensional Co 3 O 4 nanodots are grown in situ onto two dimensional TiO 2 nanosheets, successfully producing a Z-scheme heterojunction Co 3 O 4 /TiO 2 photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of enrofloxacin. The synthesized nanohybrid exhibits superior photodegradation performance (0.0269 min −1 for enrofloxacin) and excellent stability (four cycles). The matched energy bands allow the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction, and the built-in electric field provides the reaction driving force. The formed Z-scheme heterojunction can simultaneously inhibit photoinduced electron-hole recombination, boost photoinduced charge carrier transfer, and produce more active electrons and holes, therefore generating more active species for eventual photocatalytic degradation. In addition, a the possible enrofloxacin degradation pathway was proposed based on simulated calculations and GC MS analysis. This work can inspire further design and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Improved performance in 0D/2D mixed dimensional homojunction MoS2 photodetectors by enhancing light absorption

Lin Zhang,Peiyu Cheng,Yongqiang Du,Quan Wang

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) possesses excellent potential for applications in the field of optoelectronic detection. However, the atomic-level thickness of the monolayer MoS2 leads to weak light absorption and a restricted absorption spectrum. The performance of monolayer MoS2 devices has reached a bottleneck. Fortunately, the above issues can be effectively solved by coupling with various types of photosensitivity nanostructures. In this work, we integrated MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) with high efficient light absorption with monolayer MoS2 to fabricate 0D/2D MoS2 QDs/MoS2 hybrid dimensional homojunction photodetectors. In this structure, MoS2 is used as an efficient carrier transport channel, while MoS2 QDs act as effective light absorbers to enhance the local electric field around MoS2. The synergistic effect of MoS2 QDs and MoS2 is utilized to accelerate the migration rate of photogenerated carriers in the structure, and in particular, the highest responsivity of the MoS2 QDs/MoS2 hybrid device is 27.6 A W−1 with the detectivity as high as 2.13 × 1011 Jones under 532 nm laser, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the pristine MoS2 devices. The synergistic effect of MoS2 QDs with monolayer MoS2 is verified by finite-difference time-domain simulation. The results will pave the way for the future development of high-performance MoS2-based photodetectors.

Mixed-Dimensional Membranes with Double 0D@2D Structures Enable Efficient and Sustainable Water Treatment

Zixin Zhang,Huaqiang Fu,Zhe Wang,Wei Qian,Xin Zhao,Yunfa Si,Jiannan Guo,Shaowen Cao,Daping He

High-efficiency and sustainable membrane purification technology is highly desirable but unattainable in the field of water treatment. 2D materials are emerging as very promising candidates for water treatment applications. However, membranes assembled by pure 2D materials lack reasonable structural and functional design, usually exhibiting relatively low water permeance, purification performance, and fouling resistance. Here, a mixed-dimensional membrane is designed to solve the above-mentioned problems by assembling two kinds of in situ grown 0D@2D functional building blocks of SiO 2 @GO and TiO 2 @MXene. Specifically, the obtained membrane exhibits high and maintainable water permeance of 2114 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 as well as high rejection rates toward organic dyes thanks to the plentiful firm water channels constructed by 0D@2D structures and the negative charges on both SiO 2 @GO and TiO 2 @MXene, respectively. Moreover, the 0D@2D TiO 2 @MXene serves as photocatalyst, rendering the composite membrane intriguing self-cleaning function under UV irradiation, which is verified by the high recovery ratios of water permeance (97.5%) and dye interception rate (98.7%). Thus, this work offers a promising approach for the design of highly efficient and sustainable membrane for separation and purification purposes.

Multi-interface synergistic photocatalytic 2D/0D/2D TiO2/Pd/Ti3C2 heterojunctions for boosting hydrogen production

Huimin Jia,Ya Wang,Yiting Yang,Chuang Liu,Weiwei He

Constructing a multi-interface synergistic catalytic system represents an effective strategy for developing highly efficient photocatalysts; however, the challenge lies in fabricating ideal heterojunctions that can fully harness the multiple synergistic effects of the components. In this study, a series of TiO2/Pd/Ti3C2 nanocomposite photocatalysts with 2D/0D/2D heterojunctions were successfully fabricated through a combination of photoreduction and electrostatic self-assembly techniques by varying the mass ratios. Under irradiation from a 300 W xenon lamp, the as-constructed TiO2/3% Pd/1% Ti3C2 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibited a significantly enhanced H2 evolution rate of 21.60 mmol h−1 g−1, which was approximately 135-fold and 25.4-fold higher than those of pristine TiO2 nanosheets (NSs) and TiO2/1% Ti3C2, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance analysis collectively revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the formation of a synergistic catalytic interface among the TiO2 NSs, highly active Pd NPs, and monolayer Ti3C2 nanosheets. This interface facilitated efficient charge separation, shortened the charge transfer pathways, and enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species. This study presents a promising strategy for improving catalytic performance through multi-interface synergy and offers a preliminary investigation into the underlying synergistic mechanisms using multiple characterization techniques.

Interfacial charge transfer in 0D/2D defect-rich heterostructures for efficient solar-driven CO2 reduction

Hainan Shi,Saran Long,Shen Hu,Jungang Hou,Wenjun Ni,Chunshan Song,Keyan Li,Gagik G. Gurzadyan,Xinwen Guo

Two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has been widely explored as a promising photocatalyst for solar CO 2 conversion. However, rapid charge recombination and low visible-light utilization are severely detrimental to photocatalytic CO 2 conversion. Zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) heterostructures are considered the promising materials with size tunability and enhanced charge separation efficiency for photocatalysis. Herein, a 0D/2D heterostructure of oxygen vacancy-rich TiO 2 quantum dots confined in g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (TiO 2- x /g-C 3 N 4 ) was prepared by in-situ pyrolysis of NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti) and melamine. Charge dynamics analysis by time-resolved photoluminescence (tr-PL) and femtosecond and nanosecond pump-probed transient absorption (TA) spectra revealed that charges transfer occured from 2D-g-C 3 N 4 to 0D-TiO 2 at an ultrafast subpicosecond time scale (<1 ps) through the intimate interface. The overall fast decay of the charge carriers was attributed to interfacial charge transfer, which was accompanied by recombination relaxation mediated by shallow trapped sites. Ultrafast interfacial charge transfer greatly promoted charge separation and electrons in shallow trapped sites were easily trapped by CO 2 . In addition, combining with the synergetic advantage of strong visible light absorption, high CO 2 adsorption and large surface area, TiO 2- x /g-C 3 N 4 exhibited a superior CO evolution rate of 77.8 μmol g −1 h −1 , roughly 5 times that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 (15.1 μmol g −1 h −1 ). This work provides in-depth insights into optimizing the heterojunction for robust solar CO 2 conversion.

Intimate contacted 0D/2D hierarchical nanocomposite produces mechanically strong and flame retardant wood plastic composite

Ruofan Yang,Yiqing Fu,Jinghang Zhu,Chao Yan,Yiqun Fang,Xiaoyan Bai,Weihong Wang,Yongming Song,Qingwen Wang

Zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) with transition metal zinc and tin is a promising inorganic flame retardant in the field of wood flour/polyvinyl chloride composites (WP). Unfortunately, the cubic structure of ZHS results in poor dispersion in WP matrices, thereby reducing its mechanical properties in WP. Here, ZHS was fabricated on the surface of nano-montmorillonite (MMT) to form a zero-dimensional (0D)/ two-dimensional (2D) structure, which could improve the flame retardancy, tensile and bending strength of WP. Comparing with WP, total heat release and total smoke production of WP modified with 6 wt% MMT/ZHS composites decreased by 60.06 % and 30.18 %, respectively. Moveover, the tensile and flexural strength of the optimal WP increased by 28.00 % and 19.54 %, respectively. The unique microstructure of 0D/2D MMT/ZHS endows WP with outstanding fire satety and mechanical properties, which is conducive to the application in various fields.

0D-2D multifunctional bimetallic MOF derivative-MXene heterojunction for high areal capacity lithium-sulfur batteries

Jinxin Wang,Yongzheng Zhang,Zixin Chen,Zhiqiang Zhou,Jitong Wang,Cheng Ma,Wenming Qiao,Zhi Xu,Licheng Ling

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted much attention due to their high specific capacity. However, at high loads and rates, the polysulfides conversion rate and ion transport of batteries are slow, limiting their commercialization. This work reports zero-dimensional (0D) bimetallic MOF derivatives grown in situ on two-dimensional (2D) MXene by electrostatic adsorption (FeCo@Ti 3 C 2 ). The 0D bimetallic structure effectively avoids the stacking of MXene while providing a dual catalytic site for polysulfides. The 2D structure of MXene also provides a large number of pathways for the rapid diffusion of lithium ions. This 0D-2D heterostructured heterogeneous catalyst with bimetallic synergistic active sites efficiently immobilizes and catalyzes polysulfides, providing a fast charge transfer pathway for the electrochemical reaction of lithium polysulfides. The Li-S battery with this multifunctional 0D-2D heterojunction structure catalyst has outstanding high rate capacity (703 mAh g −1 at 4 C at room temperature and 555 mAh g −1 at 2 C at 0 °C), fascinating capacity at high load (5.5 mAh cm −2 after 100 cycles at a high sulfur content of 8.2 mg cm −2 ). The study provides new ideas for the commercialization of high-efficiency Li-S batteries.

Mechanism for One-Pot Synthesis of 0D-2D Carbon Materials in the Bubbles Inside Molten Salts

Yifeng Zhao,Zhiyuan Shi,Yulin Zhu,Jian Liu,Bo Yang,Qingkai Yu,Xiaoming Xie

The molten salts can be used as media for hydrocarbon pyrolysis owing to their excellent thermal properties, fluidity, and ease of products separation. The bubbling of hydrocarbon gases through the molten salts is an effective approach for exploiting the comprehensive advantages of the molten salts. However, the catalytic capability of the molten salts to crack C  H bonds is lower than that of molten metals/alloys. Although the addition of transition metal salts into molten salts improves the catalytic performance, the catalytic mechanism is far from well understood. Herein, bubbling chemical vapor deposition (B-CVD) for one-pot synthesis of 0D (carbon black, CB)/2D (graphene, Gr) carbon materials in molten salt at 850 °C is developed. Spectroscopic results suggest that the ionic complexes of the transition metal (Cr, Fe, Ru, Ni, Pd, Cu) chloride are the active species to realize the efficient pyrolysis of methane (CH 4 ). The confined space introduced by the bubble acts as a mini-reactor to define the product morphology and accelerate the growth. Beneficial to the synergistic effect between ionic complex promotion and bubble confined space, the mass production of CB/Gr simultaneously with high efficiency and low cost at relatively low temperature is achieved.

Designing advanced 0D-2D hierarchical structure for Epoxy resin to accomplish exceeding thermal management and safety

Jingyi Lu,Bibo Wang,Pengfei Jia,Wenhua Cheng,Can Liao,Zhoumei Xu,Liang Cheng,Yuan Hu

Epoxy resin (EP) is widely used in the package of modern electronic products for thermal management, but the extremely flammability and toxicity release have restricted its further application. In this article, zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) nanocubes were in-situ fabricated on the surface of titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene nanosheets (ZHS@M) for improving the thermal management capacity of EP. Due to the phonon thermal conductance from ZHS and electron-hole thermal conductance of Ti 3 C 2 T x , the thermal conductivity was improved by 328% compared with the neat EP, which was benefit to dissipate heat for reducing the possibility of thermal disaster chain happening. Furthermore, owing to the 0D-2D hierarchical structure of ZHS@M, the fire safety and smoke suppression of these EP composites were highly strengthened. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased by 54.91% and 58.74%, respectively. Moreover, hazardous gases of EP during the combustion were also efficiently reduced, and the generation of carbon oxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) were decreased by 44.44% and 39.46% when the additive of ZHS@M was only 2 wt%. As a result, ternary catalytic effect and labyrinth structure improved the safety of EP in the thermal runaway incidents. Besides, EP-2.0 ZHS@M exhibited excellent tensile robustness (64.71 MPa) and modulus (2.39 GPa), which regarded as a reliable supporting material for electronics in thermal management field. Hence, this hierarchical EP-ZHS@M composites provided the help of cleaning the thermal accumulation and increasing fire safety while facing thermal runaway, which was significant to destroy the formation of thermal disaster chain and further applications of the modern electrons and devices.

Carbon Dots@Ti3C2Tx-MXene 0D/2D Hybrid Composites toward High-Performance Lubricating Additives under Varying Temperatures

Junhai Wang,Yu Kan,Tingting Yan,Wenfeng Liang,Lixiu Zhang,Xinran Li,Siyang Gao

Progress in nanolubricant additive is crucial to pursuit of energy saving and sustainable development. For enhancing lubrication efficiency of pentaerythritol ester (PETE) oil, we synthesized zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) carbon dots(CD)@Ti3C2Tx-MXene hybrid composites using a facial hydrothermal method, which gave full play to interlayer shear mechanism of Ti3C2Tx-MXene, repair effect of carbon dots and their potential synergy. The composites were added to PETE as lubricating additives, during which ultrasonic treatment was employed to enhance the dispersion stability. The frictional tests confirmed that the addition of CD@Ti3C2Tx resulted in significant reductions in friction and wear across varying temperatures owing to the ultrasmall size, interlayer sliding, and synergistic effect. The optimal concentration of 0.1 wt % of CD@Ti3C2Tx reduced friction coefficients and wear volumes of PETE by 54.5% and 57.6% at 25 °C, 53.3% and 54.3% at 100 °C, and 40.0% and 45.9% at 200 °C, respectively. A tribofilm induced by complex tribochemical reactions, mainly consisting of carbon dots, Ti3C2Tx, metal oxides, carbides, and nitrides, was generated at the contact interface, which significantly alleviated direct contact between the rubbing pair. This study explores the potential of CD@Ti3C2Tx for development of advanced lubricating materials and is expected to contribute to wider adoption of MXene-based materials in the field of tribology.

Fabrication of 0D/2D Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots/SnNb2O6 Ultrathin Nanosheets with Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Bifu Luo,Yuanzhi Hong,Di Li,Zhenyuan Fang,Yaping Jian,Weidong Shi

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet photocatalysts with appropriate band structure have aroused a great deal of research interest owing to their unique structural and electronic properties. In this work, carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) with up-conversion property were constructed on SnNb2O6 ultrathin nanosheets by a facial hydrothermal process. The as-prepared CNQDs/SnNb2O6 0D/2D nanocomposites exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic performance of H2 production under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The up-conversion behavior of CNQDs endow the CNQDs/SnNb2O6 nanocomposites with the ability of photocatalytic H2 production at wavelengths greater than 600 nm. Moreover, the introduced CNQDs could serve as effective electron collectors and promote the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, which is elucidated by the transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impendence spectra. Finally, a plausible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for CNQDs/SnNb2O6 nanocomposite toward the H2 production from water splitting.
