Systematic forensic identification of a homicide by brodifacoum poisoning: A case report

Zhonghao Yu,Yuhao Yuan,Qing Shi,Hang Gao,Erjuan Zhao,Jinghong Ma,Yiwu Zhou

Brodifacoum, a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide, exerts inhibitory effects on blood coagulation factor synthesis, leading to abnormal clotting function and potential fatality. Poisoning of accidental exposure to brodifacoum is not rare, but death from brodifacoum poisoning can be largely avoided with timely and long-term effective treatments, consequently, forensic data on fatalities due to brodifacoum poisoning may be limited. This paper presents a case of brodifacoum-induced homicide, detailing the medial records and pathological changes observed in multiple organs. Furthermore, t liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was employed to measure the concentrations of brodifacoum in blood, hydropericardium, and urine 40 days post-poisoning (1 day post-mortem), yielding values of 0.097 μg/mL, 0.089 μg/mL, and 0.007 μg/mL respectively. The aim of this article is to contribute towards forensic identification of fatalities resulting from brodifacoum poisoning while also serving as a reference for clinical diagnosis in similar cases.

Health risk assessment for human mercury exposure from Cinnabaris-containing Baizi Yangxin Pills in healthy volunteers Po administration

Zhaoliang Hu,Xiao Wu,Yi Du,Wenyu Zou,Haijuan Dong,Min Song,Taijun Hang,Yuting Lu

Background Cinnabaris (α-HgS), a mineral traditional Chinese material medica , has been used in combination with other herbs manifesting some definite therapeutic effects for thousands of years. But the currently reported mercury poisoning incidents raised the doubts about the safety of Cinnabaris-containing traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). Baizi Yangxin Pills (BZYXP) is a Cinnabaris-containing TCM widely used in clinical practice. This study evaluated the health risk of mercury exposure from BZYXP in healthy volunteers based on the total mercury and mercury species analysis of blood and urine after single and multiple doses of BZYXP. Methods Blood pharmacokinetics and urinary excretion studies of mercury were compared between single (9 g, once daily) and multiple doses (9 g, twice daily, continued for 7 days) of BZYXP. The whole blood and urine samples were collected at the specific points or periods after the administration of BZYXP. The total mercury and mercury species in blood and urine samples were determined by cold vapor-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) and HPLC-CV-AFS, respectively. Results The mercury was excreted slowly and accumulated obviously after continuous exposure of BZYXP. Moreover, the well-known neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) was detected in blood samples after 7 days’ administration of BZYXP. In the urine samples, only Hg(II) was detected. Therefore, long-term use of BZYXP will cause mercury poisoning due to mercury's high accumulative properties and MeHg formation. Conclusion Cinnabaris-containing TCMs such as BZYXP should be restricted to cases in which alternatives are available, and the blood mercury species profile should be monitored during the long-term clinical medication.

Investigating the antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects of cinnamaldehyde against Campylobacter spp. using cell surface characteristics

Hwan Hee Yu,Ye Ji Song,Hyung-Seok Yu,Na-Kyoung Lee,Hyun-Dong Paik

Campylobacter species are known as biofilm-forming bacteria in food systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects of cinnamaldehyde against Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolated from chicken meat. The biofilm-forming C. jejuni and C. coli strains from chicken meat were investigated using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Campylobacter spp. characteristics. The MIC value was 31.25 µg/mL for the Campylobacter strains tested. Cinnamaldehyde had an inhibition and degradation effect on Campylobacter biofilms at concentrations > 15.63 µg/mL. Campylobacter strains treated with 15.63 µg/mL CA exhibited significantly decreased autoaggregation, motility, exopolysaccharide production, and soluble protein. In addition, Campylobacter biofilms formed on stainless steel were degraded following cinnamaldehyde treatment, as determined by scanning electron microscopy. Taken together, these results suggest that cinnamaldehyde constitutes a potential natural preservative against Campylobacter and a nontoxic biofilm remover that could be applied to control food poisoning in the poultry manufacturing-related food industry. Practical Application Cinnamaldehyde was able to effectively remove the biofilm of Campylobacter in the small crack of stainless steel. Cinnamaldehyde has a potential to replace the synthetic antimicrobial and/or antibiofilm agent as well as has a positive influence on consumer concern for the food safety issues of the poultry industries.

Unique responses of Cu-SSZ-13 toward phosphorus: Al atoms on zeolite framework versus varied Cu species

Jingang Wang,Jianbo Zhang,Cheng Xing,Taosheng Jin,Jinpeng Liu,Meiting Ju,Xuejiao Tang

Phosphorus (P) poisoning of NH 3 -SCR catalysts is inevitable in application of NO x abatement of diesel exhaust. The distinct effects on Cu-SSZ-13 of P from different precursors (H 3 PO 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 ) were figured out and the mechanism was further investigated. P-poisoned Cu-SSZ-13 (Si/Al = 6) catalysts were prepared and characterized using N 2 adsorption, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping (SEM-EDX), ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH 3 -TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and 27 Al solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies ( 27 Al NMR). Significant enhancement of high-temperature activities (400–600 °C) were observed for the catalysts with P loading of 0.3–0.9 wt%, since the appropriate incorporation enabled to bind P atoms to CuO x in remained framework. However, the high P content of 1.5 wt% resulted in a detrimental effect on framework to induce the accumulation of Cu species. Interestingly, the dominant P from H 3 PO 4 was inclined to directly attack the framework Al leading to more severe dealumination, while the P from (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 interacted with Cu 2+ to form copper phosphate with more Cu 2+ migrating to the surface of the catalyst which promoted the NO x conversation at each active site resulting in the low-temperature catalytic activity unchanged. So, control of the P/Cu and form of P is capable of preventing P poisoning and unlocks the potential of Cu-SSZ-13 in exhaust treatment.

The effect of SnO2 on enhancing electrocatalytic property of palladium toward formic acid oxidation

Junyu Wang,Mengjie Feng,Shuozhen Hu,Xinsheng Zhang

Although palladium (Pd) based materials are considered the best catalyst for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR), they are still confronted with a lot of barriers, such as the growth/sintering of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and the accumulation of adsorbed poisoning intermediates. Herein, tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) decorated carbon black was utilized as the catalyst carrier to synthesize Pd/SnO 2 /C for FAOR. The introduction of SnO 2 significantly reduced the particle size of Pd NPs and forming the Pd–O–Sn structure. Compared with Pd/C, Pd/SnO 2 /C owned higher concentration of O ads and less adsorption amount of poisoning intermediates. The oxygen atoms adsorbed on Pd surface were rapidly transferred to SnO 2 due to the spillover effect. The FAOR reaction kinetic results showed that the introduction of SnO 2 accelerated the diffusion rate of formic acid on the electrode surface . Pd/SnO 2 /C exhibited high specific activity (5.97 mA cm −2 ), excellent durability, and high anti-CO poisoning ability toward FAOR due to the introduction of SnO 2 .

Reducing the poisoning effect of adsorbed alkaline earth metal on Nb active sites with sulfates for NH3-SCR

Guoquan Liu,He Zhang,Pengfei Wang,Yi Li,Xueyue Mi,Sihui Zhan

Reducing the poisoning effect of alkaline earth metals over catalysts in industrial fields presents a great challenge to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with ammonia. Herein, we successfully introduce sulfates to the surface of supported manganese-based oxides (Nb/MnO 2 -S) for trapping calcium species, and Nb/MnO 2 -S catalyst with superior low-temperature performance and calcium-resistant property still exhibits excellent de-NO x activity in a wide operating temperature window (175–350 °C, over 80 % NO x conversion with a gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 h −1 ) after calcium poisoning. In this case, the addition of sulfates increased the quantity of chemisorbed oxygen on Nb/MnO 2 -S, thus accelerating the redox cycle in NH 3 -SCR reaction. Significantly, compared with calcium-poisoned Nb/MnO 2 , relevant spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations further reveal that sulfates species prefer to interact with calcium and release the Nb active sites, which maintains the efficient NH 3 adsorption and preserves a large amount of Brønsted acid sites over calcium-poisoned Nb/MnO 2 -S, thus promoting calcium-resistant performance. This work will provide a general strategy to develop calcium-resistant SCR catalysts with low-temperature activity for industrial applications.

An Evaluation of Acute Hydrogen Sulfide Poisoning in Rats through Serum Metabolomics Based on Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Meiling Zhang,Mingjie Deng,Jianshe Ma,Xianqin Wang

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is the second leading cause of toxin-related deaths in the operational site. Its main target organs of toxic effects are the central nervous system and respiratory system. In this study, we developed a serum metabonomic method, based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), to evaluate the effect of acute poisoning by hydrogen sulfide on rats. Pattern recognition analysis, including both principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA), revealed that acute hydrogen sulfide poisoning induced metabolic perturbations. Compared to the control group, the level of urea, glucose, glyceryl stearate in rat serum of the poisoning group increased after two hours, and the level of glucose, docosahexaenoic acid, glyceryl stearate and arachidonic acid in rat serum of the poisoning group increased after 48 h, while the l-valine, galactose, l-tyrosine levels decreased. Our results indicate that metabonomic methods based on GC/MS may be useful to elucidate acute hydrogen sulfide poisoning through the exploration of biomarkers.

Efficient catalytic ammonia synthesis using Cs-doped Ru/ZrO2 catalysts prepared via a low eutectic system

Jingwei Du,Jinjun Li,Zhixiong You

This study explores the preparation of a Cs-doped Ru/ZrO 2 catalyst using a low eutectic system and its application in ammonia synthesis. Additionally, it examines the effect of Cs doping on enhancing the catalyst's resistance to hydrogen poisoning. Compared to the undoped Ru/ZrO 2 catalyst and the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 –B catalyst prepared through the grinding method for promoter incorporation, the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 -A catalyst synthesized using the low eutectic system demonstrated significantly enhanced activity. At 400 °C and 0.1 MPa, the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 -A catalyst achieved an ammonia synthesis activity of 1769 μmol g cat −1  h −1 , which is approximately 35 times higher than that of the undoped Ru/ZrO 2 catalyst. The structure of the catalyst was analyzed using various material characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, and SEM. The results showed that the Cs–Ru/ZrO 2 -A catalyst, prepared under identical conditions, exhibited no significant structural differences compared to other catalysts. However, further TPR and TPD analyses revealed that Cs interacts with Ru to some extent, affecting its reduction behavior and enhancing the catalytic reaction rate for ammonia synthesis. Additionally, detailed XPS analysis of all catalysts was conducted, leading to a proposed relationship between the catalytic reaction rate and the oxidation states of the metal components. The study revealed that the presence of Cs significantly inhibits hydrogen poisoning of the catalyst. Furthermore, it demonstrated that the addition of promoters enhances H 2 dissociation by supplying electrons to the active metal Ru, while Cs plays a crucial role in effectively suppressing hydrogen poisoning.

Understanding the impact of promoters on enhancing and inhibiting the sulphur resistance and regeneration of supported Pd catalysts for complete methane oxidation

Abubakar Yusuf,Yong Ren,Yun Liu,Li Shi,Zhiyu Xiao,Run Pan,Zheng Wang,Hainam Do,Jianrong Li,Jun He

The efficient treatment of methane emissions from natural gas-powered engines is necessary due to the high potency and global warming potential of methane. Promoters are often employed to enhance catalysts’ performance and stability for methane oxidation. It is therefore important to understand the impact of promoters on Pd activity, especially under practically relevant conditions. Here, we report the enhancement and inhibition effect of promoters (ZrO 2 , CeO 2 , and TiO 2 ) on the sulfur resistance and regeneration of alumina-supported Pd catalysts for complete methane oxidation in the presence and absence of moisture. The type of promoter employed and the presence of moisture influence the type of sulfur species formed on the alumina-supported Pd catalysts, as well as their catalytic performance and regeneration. Whereas ZrO 2 enhances both the activity and SO 2 resistance and enhances the regeneration of the poisoned catalysts under both dry and wet reaction conditions, more stable sulfate species are formed in the presence of CeO 2 and TiO 2 , inhibiting both the catalysts’ performance and regeneration. In addition, the presence of ZrO 2 protects the active Pd sites from progressive deactivation over sulfur poisoning and regeneration cycles. The results of this work provide insights into how promoters influence the activity, sulfur poisoning and regeneration of methane oxidation catalysts in the presence and absence of moisture, which have implications for the practical design of industrially relevant catalysts.

Improved Protective Effects and Pharmacokinetics of Huperzine A Derivative H14 in Soman Poisoning: A Comparative Study With Huperzine A in Rats

Guixiang Yang,Yalan Cui,Xingxing Zong,Qian Jin,Yi Zhang,Liqin Li,Dongxin Liu,Xuejun Chen,Chen Wang,Jingchen Wei

Rationale N -[2-Hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzilidene]-Hup A (H14) is a derivative of huperzine A (Hup A) that demonstrates superior protective effects against soman (GD) compared to Hup A. This study aims to evaluate the protective efficacy of H14 pretreatment against GD in rats and to provide an analytical framework for the pharmacokinetic evaluation of H14 in experimental animals. Methods The study employed protective ratios (PR) as an evaluation criterion to assess the efficacy of H14 and Hup A in preventing GD in vivo. Liquid–liquid extraction techniques were utilized to extract H14 and its metabolite, Hup A, from plasma. The extracted plasma samples were then analyzed using an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) method for the simultaneous quantification of H14 and Hup A. Results The PR values for the 6- and 12-h Hup A groups were 1.26 and 1.08, respectively. In contrast, the 6, 12, and 24-h H14 groups demonstrated PR values of 2.81, 1.98, and 1.18, respectively, indicating extended protective capabilities compared to Hup A. All validation parameters for the UHPLC–MS/MS method, including linearity, specificity, precision, accuracy, matrix effect, and stability, met the acceptance criteria established by FDA guidelines. The pharmacokinetic analysis indicates that H14, after conversion to Hup A in vivo, significantly extends the duration of Hup A concentrations in the body, leading to more effective prevention of GD poisoning compared to Hup A alone. Conclusions H14 demonstrates superior efficacy in preventing GD poisoning compared to Hup A. Furthermore, this analytical approach offers a reliable and efficient method for the pharmacokinetic evaluation of H14 in experimental animals.

Metabolic profiling of rats poisoned with paraquat and treated with Xuebijing using a UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS metabolomics approach

Wen Liu,Sha Li,Yang Ke Wu,Xiao Yan,Yi Ming Zhu,Fei Ya Jiang,Yu Jiang,Liang Hong Zou,Tong Tong Wang

Xuebijing (XBJ) is a compound Chinese medicine that contains Paeoniae Radix Rubra, ChuanXiong Rhizoma, Salvia Miltiorrhiza Radix et Rhizoma, Carthami Flos, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix. It is widely used in China to treat sepsis. Previous studies have demonstrated that XBJ can decrease mortality in patients with moderate paraquat poisoning. However, the mechanism by which it exerts this effect is not completely clear. In this study, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS)-based metabolomics approach was used to perform a metabolic profiling analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA), random forest (RF), and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were used to identify metabolites to clarify the mechanism of XBJ's activity. XBJ clearly alleviated lung injury in a Sprague Dawley (SD) rat model of paraquat (PQ) poisoning. Seven metabolites related to four pathways, including those involved in sphingolipid and phospholipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, unsaturated fatty acid metabolism, and pantothenic acid and CoA biosynthesis, were present at different levels in PQ-poisoned rats treated with XBJ compared with untreated rats. XBJ can ameliorate the effects of PQ poisoning in SD rats. Using a metabolomics approach enabled us to gain new insight into the mechanism underlying this effect.

Selenium-Rich Yeast Protects Against Aluminum-Induced Renal Inflammation and Ionic Disturbances

Cao Changyu,Luo Junchong,Li Xiaowen,Zhang Mengdan,Zhang Haoji,Zhang Jipei,Wang Kai

The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of SeY (selenium-rich yeast) against Al (aluminum)-induced inflammation and ionic imbalances. Male Kunming mice were treated with Al (10 mg/kg) and/or SeY (0.1 mg/kg) by oral gavage for 28 days. The degree of inflammation was assessed by mRNA expression of inflammatory biomarkers. Ionic disorders were assessed by determining the Na + , K + , and Ca 2+ content, as well as the alteration in ATP-modifying enzymes (ATPases), including Na + K + -ATPase, Ca 2+ -ATPase, Mg 2+ -ATPase, Ca 2+ Mg 2+ -ATPase, and the mRNA levels of ATPase’s subunits in kidney. It was observed here that SeY exhibited a significant protective effect on the kidney against the Al-induced upregulation of pro-inflammatory and downregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, a significant effect of Al on the Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ levels in kidney was observed, and Al was observed to decrease the activities of Na + K + -ATPase, Mg 2+ -ATPase, and Ca 2+ Mg 2+ -ATPase. The mRNA expression of the Na + K + -ATPase subunits and Ca 2+ -ATPase subunits was regulated significantly by Al. Notably, SeY modulated the Al-induced alterations of ion concentrations, ATPase activity, and mRNA expression of their subunits. These results suggest that SeY prevents renal toxicity caused by Al via regulation of inflammatory responses, ATPase activities, and transcription of their subunits.
