Growing concerns about environmental pollution and future food supplies have encouraged the development of controlled release formulation of pesticides. Porous hollow silica (PHS) is an ideal carrier to prepare pesticide microcapsule due to its hollow structure, high surface area, and biocompatibility. However, the cumbersome preparation process of pesticide microcapsule based on PHS severely restricted its extensive development and application in pesticide products. Herein, an improved soft-template method for preparing pesticide loaded PHS was developed by using newly prepared tributylhexadecylphosphonium dicyanamide [P 44416 ][N(CN) 2 ] as the solvent and soft-template agent. The model pesticide prochloraz (PRO) was entrapped inside PHS in situ without loading process during the preparation process and a core–shell structure sphere (PRO@PIL-PHS-PEC microcapsule) was obtained by coating PRO@PIL-PHS with pectin in solution through electrostatic adsorption. The obtained PRO@PIL-PHS-PEC microcapsules had high drug encapsulation efficiency and good photostability with pectinase and pH responsive release properties. Plate antagonism tests and pot trials indicated that the PRO@PIL-PHS-PEC had a significant long-term control efficacy against S. sclerotiorum and no adverse impact on the growth of rapeseed plant. The prepared PRO@PIL-PHS-PEC could effectively reduce the use of pesticides by significantly improving the effective utilization rate and efficacy of pesticides. The simple and green method for synthesis of PRO@PIL-PHS-PEC based on PIL would have great potential for large-scale application of controlled release formulation in the field of pesticides.

Abstract Pesticides play a crucial role in modern agriculture, yet their widespread use poses a threat to the ecosystem by causing significant environmental damage. In an effort to address this issue, a novel nanopesticide delivery system was developed, utilizing a tannic acid (TA)-Cu combination deposited onto the surface of dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency of pesticide utilization. The process involved incorporating Tebuconazole (Teb) into DMSNs using the one-pot sol-gel method. Subsequently, a coating was applied through the sequential addition of TA and CuCl 2 to an aqueous dispersion of Teb@DMSNs. The resulting nanopesticide, named TA@Teb@DMSNs, exhibited a spherical shape and achieved an impressive Teb loading rate of nearly 26.6%. Kinetic studies on Teb release revealed that TA@Teb@DMSNs demonstrated characteristics conducive to controlled and sustained release. The adhesion quality of TA@Teb@DMSNs on Aesculus chinensis Bunge leaves was confirmed through a comparative study with Teb@DMSNs. Additionally, when compared to Teb suspension, TA@Teb@DMSNs exhibited superior antifungal activity against Fusarium esculenta wilt over an extended period. Consequently, the TA@Teb@DMSNs constructed in this research might be used as an efficient nanopesticide formulation for advancing the sustainable development of agriculture. Graphical Abstract A novel nanopesticide delivery system is prepared by depositing of tannic acid-Cu complex on dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles, which effectively improves the adhesion and effective time of pesticide on the leaf.

BACKGROUND Widespread application of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems is a feasible and effective method to improve the utilization efficiency of pesticides. However, owing to the high cost and complicated preparation technologies of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems, their applications in agricultural production have been seriously hindered. RESULTS This study aimed to construct inexpensive photothermally controlled-release pesticide delivery systems using chitosan (CS) and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as the wall materials, and a coordination assembly strategy of LS with transition metal ions to encapsulate a model pesticide, avermectin (AVM). The resulting complex or nanoparticle photothermal layers in these systems effectively achieved photothermal conversions, and replaced the use of common photothermal agents. In the prepared pesticide-delivery systems, two systems had remarkable photothermal conversion performance and photothermal stabilities with a photothermal conversion efficiency ( η ) of 24.03% and 28.82%, respectively, under 808 nm, 2 W near-infrared irradiation. The slow-release and ultraviolet-shielding performance of these two systems were markedly enhanced compared with other formulations. The insecticidal activities of these two systems against Plutella xylostella under irradiation with light-emitting diode (LED)-simulated sunlight were also enhanced by 5.20- and 5.06-fold, respectively, compared with that without irradiation of LED-simulated sunlight. CONCLUSION Because of their convenient preparations, inexpensive and renewable raw materials, and excellent photothermally controlled-release performance, these on-demand pesticide delivery systems might have significant potential in improving the utilization efficiency of pesticides in modern agriculture. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

In recent years, stimuli-responsive controlled-release pesticide formulations have drawn extensive as they show huge potential in the practical application of agriculture. Herein, a multifunctional composite nanocarrier was prepared by our group, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) modified graphene oxide (PNIPAm-GO), this is a temperature-responsive release pesticide formulation that can regulate pesticide release based on the temperature change. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) was loaded on PNIPAm-GO nanocomposite carrier via a simple physisorption process and LC@PNIPAm-GO exhibited temperature-responsive controlled release performance leading to release of LC at a specified temperature and extended its persisted release time. In addition, the LC@PNIPAm-GO controlled-release pesticide formulations showed both good water solubility and dispersion stability while its anti-UV property. Furthermore, we also assessed the biological safety of LC@PNIPAm-GO and proved that PNIPAm-GO is non-toxic. The study of this temperature-responsive pesticide formulation has promoted the development of intelligent pesticide formulations to great extent.

In agritechnology applications, the sustained release of pesticides plays significant roles in efficient bioavailability and environmental protection. In this study, hydrophobic derivate of sodium alginate (Ugi-SA), polyacrylamide (PAM) and montmorillonite (MMT) were utilized to construct several stretchable double-network nanocomposite hydrogels, which were used to control the release of λ-cyhalothrin. These nanocomposite hydrogels were fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The adoption of Ugi-SA and appropriate incorporation of MMT could significantly improve the tensile properties , pesticide-loading efficiency and sustained release performances of the hydrogels. The swelling behavior of all the hydrogels well fits into the Fickian diffusion model. The maximum fracture strain and loading efficiency of the hydrogels reached 2000% and 81.30%, respectively. The hydrogel with 5% MMT content shows the lowest cumulative release percentage of 6.68% over 87 h, and the pesticide release curves well fit into the Weibull model. These novel nanocomposite hydrogels take advantages of both the gelation property of alginate derivatives and the adsorption capacity of clays, to serve as promising potential carriers and to improve the utilization efficiency of water-insoluble pesticides.

The large losses and UV-light instability of traditional pesticide formulations during spraying lead to low drug utilization and a threat to the environment and human health. In this work, a tannic acid and iron ion functionalized titanium dioxide pillared montmorillonite drug sustained-release system was successfully prepared. Pillared montmorillonite showed good foliar retention after tannin modification to prevent the loss of the drug during spraying. Under the irradiation of UV light, the shielding and absorption of UV light by the montmorillonite sheet, TiO 2 and tannic acid coating greatly enhanced UV stability of the avermectin (AVM). In addition, AVM@Fe-TA-TiPMt also showed pH response release due to the ion exchange and disintegration of the coating. With the disintegration of tannic acid coating and the release of tannic acid molecules, AVM was rapidly released below pH 7. AVM@Fe-TA-TiPMt exhibited enhanced insecticidal effect due to the excellent foliar retention effect and high drug release. The tannic acid-functionalized sustained-release system has achieved high foliar retention, UV stability and pH-responsive release, which is conducive to the efficient utilization of pesticides and provides valuable information for the development of clay-based pesticide formulations in the future.
