Inorganic photochromic (PC) materials are increasingly being considered potential candidates for security and optical storage applications. Although great progress has been made in inorganic photochromic materials, it is still challenging to reach both strong photochromic efficiency and large luminescence modulation in inorganic materials . In this work, an effective method is proposed to simultaneously achieve strong photochromic efficiency and large luminescence modulation in ferroelectric oxides BaMg 0·28 Zr 0·16 Ta 0·56 O 3 : Dy 3+ (BZMT: Dy 3+ ) via inducing a large number of oxygen vacancies . The obtained BZMT: Dy 3+ ceramics exhibits a reversible white-black color change (∼59.5%) upon alternating illumination at 365 nm and 450 nm (or thermal stimulus 300 °C). Meanwhile, a large luminescence modulation (∼87.6%) had been achieved in BZMT: Dy 3+ due to the well overlap between the absorb peak of BZMT and the emission peaks of Dy 3+ . Benefiting from these excellent properties, the obtained BZMT: Dy 3+ ceramics can be used as electronic devices, security, and information storage multifunctional materials. Moreover, this study provides an effective method for developing other inorganic photochromic materials.

All-inorganic cesium copper halide nanocrystals have attracted extensive attention due to their cost-effectiveness, low toxicity, and rich luminescence properties. However, controlling the synthesis of these nanocrystals to achieve a precise composition and high luminous efficiency remains a challenge that limits their future application. Herein, we report the effect of oleylammonium iodide on the synthesis of copper halide nanocrystals to control the composition and phase and modulate their photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs). For CsCu2I3, the PL peak is centered at 560 nm with a PLQY of 47.3%, while the PL peak of Cs3Cu2I5is located at 440 nm with an unprecedently high PLQY of 95.3%. Furthermore, the intermediate-state CsCu2I3/Cs3Cu2I5heterostructure shows white light emission with a PLQY of 66.4%, chromaticity coordinates of (0.3176, 0.3306), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 90, and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6234 K, indicating that it is promising for single-component white-light-emitting applications. The nanocrystals reported in this study have excellent luminescence properties, low toxicity, and superior stability, so they are more suitable for future light-emitting applications.

The versatility of the organic fluorophores enables us to track its emission curves and sharp luminescence changes under controllable conditions. A tetraphenylethylene-based fluorescent probe (1-methyl-4-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)styryl)pyridin-1-ium iodide, abbreviated as TPE-py-I ) has been synthesized and yields efficient red emission in organic phase (DMSO). The incorporation of ClO − in its DMSO solution triggers efficient “on-off” quenching effect due to ions exchange from iodide to hypochlorite. The inactivation of the original red luminescence can be also realized by the addition of water and the typical aggregation-caused-quenching (ACQ) has been observed. Unexpectedly, such ACQ process will be suppressed and lead to an aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) effect, providing distinct fluorescent read-out from pale-red to bright yellow in the presence of hypochlorite. The limit of detection (LOD) has been calculated to be 0.25 μM via ratiometric operation with an excellent linear range from 1 μM to 50 μM. This non-invasive and in-situ detection of ClO − via AIE modes can be employed as an indicator for the evaluation of ions responses in real environments.
