Highly sensitive, anti-freeze, and ion-conductive polyelectrolyte-based hydrogel for flexible sensor applications in sub-zero temperatures

Chaoshi Huang,Yanming Zhong,Wenbo Cai,Lin Cao,Qiwei Wang,Wei Li,Zhidan Lin,Peng Zhang

Conductive hydrogels are typically unable to function in cold environments because they freeze at subzero temperatures. A hydrogel based on an organic polyol or ionic liquids (ILs) may improve anti-freezing properties, but the integration of a single component can reduce long-term conductivity. Through the combination of glycerol and ILs in this research, we developed an anti-freeze-conducting hydrogel by leveraging the ability of glycerol to retain water and ILs' high electrical conductivity at low temperatures. As a result of the polyhydroxyl groups present in glycerol, it readily forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules, conferring excellent anti-freeze and water retention properties to the hydrogel. Even after being stored at −20 °C for 15 days, the hydrogel's mechanical properties and electrical conductivity remain stable. Further, by incorporating ILs into the polymer network backbone, the hydrogel achieves ultra-high conductivity sensitivity, retaining a gauge factor of 9.18 (or 96 %) after storage at −20 °C. Aside from its excellent adhesion and elongation characteristics, the hydrogel exhibits excellent characteristics that enable it to adhere firmly to surfaces as well as detect subtle deformations, such as the bending of a human joint, with ease. Due to its frost-resistant and sensitive properties, this organic ionic hydrogel can be utilized to design wearable sensors that are tailored for monitoring the health of individuals in sub-zero temperatures.

Low mechanical-hysteresis conductive hydrogel conferred by chitosan bridging and MXene nanoconfined mechanism

Jian Zou,Xin Jing,Shitao Li,Yi Chen,Yuejun Liu,Pei-Yong Feng,Xiang-Fang Peng

Large mechanical hysteresis, stemming from the inherent viscoelasticity of the hydrogel networks, seriously affected its service life and application scope. Herein, we introduced a synergistic approach combining MXene nanoconfinement and bridging effect to produce hydrogels with low mechanical hysteresis. The introduced MXene was able to provide an effective nanoconfined effect on the polymerization of acrylamide monomers. By synergizing with the bridging effect—facilitated by strong interactions between chitosan-grafted polyacrylamide and solvent molecules to accelerate stress transfer—we successfully developed a MXene-reinforced conductive hydrogel with mechanical hysteresis as low as 3.17 %. Additionally, the strong electrostatic interactions between the chitosan and MXene further affiliate the dispersion of MXene within the hydrogel. The resulting MXene-reinforced conductive hydrogel demonstrated remarkable temperature sensitivity (TCR = −1.42 %/°C), making it suitable to be used as a health monitoring device. These findings opened up new perspectives for the further expansion of MXene and beyond.

Epidermal Sensors Constructed by a Stabilized Nanosilver Hydrogel with Self-Healing, Antimicrobial, and Temperature-Responsive Properties

Xiongbiao Zheng,Jiachang Chen,Xia Huang

The development of conductive hydrogels has garnered significant attention in the field of wearable devices and smart sensors. However, the fabrication of hydrogels that possess both multifunctionality and structural stability remains a challenging task. In this study, a novel hydrogel, PAgHCB, was synthesized using a mild method and exhibited outstanding characteristics such as electrical conductivity, self-healing capability, antimicrobial activity, dimensional stability, and temperature sensitivity. The exceptional mechanical performance (∼120 kPa at a strain of 450%) of PAgHCB is attributed to the incorporation of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and the mechanical reinforcement of the gel network by carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNT-COOH). The borate bonds between or within poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) chains confer self-healing capabilities upon PAgHCB, with a healing efficiency of 74.1%. The in situ reduction of silver nanoparticles through ultraviolet irradiation imparts antimicrobial characteristics to the hydrogel [against Escherichia coli, zone of inhibition (ZOI) = 3.7 mm; against Staphylococcus aureus, ZOI = 6.3 mm]. The linear temperature responsiveness of the PAgHCB hydrogel (R = −3.99T + 608.84 and COD = 0.9988) arises from the migration of silver ions within the gel matrix and the dissociation of borate bonds. Furthermore, PAgHCB was seamlessly integrated into sensors designed for monitoring human motion. The gel-based sensors exhibited three distinct sensing strain ranges corresponding to three different gauge factors (GF1 = 2.976, GF2 = 1.063, and GF3 = 2.97). Notably, PAgHCB gel sensors demonstrated the capability to detect electrical signals generated by finger and wrist joint movements and even discerned signals arising from subtle deformations induced by activities such as speaking. Additionally, the PAgHCB gel was utilized as a pressure sensor to detect external pressures applied to the skin (from 0.373 to 15.776 kPa). This work expands the avenues for designing and synthesizing multifunctional conductive hydrogels, promoting the application of hydrogel sensors with comfortable wear and high sensitivity.

Highly Sensitive Strain Sensor Based on a Stretchable and Conductive Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Phytic Acid/NH2-POSS Hydrogel with a 3D Microporous Structure

Liang Shao,Ying Li,Zhonglei Ma,Yang Bai,Jie Wang,Peiyun Zeng,Pin Gong,Fuxiong Shi,Zhanyou Ji,Yang Qiao,Ran Xu,Juanjuan Xu,Guohong Zhang,Caiyun Wang,Jianzhong Ma

Conductive hydrogel-based wearable strain sensors with tough, stretchable, self-recoverable, and highly sensitive properties are highly demanded for applications in electronic skin and human–machine interface. However, currently, hydrogel-based strain sensors put forward higher requirements on their biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and sensitivity. Herein, we report a poly(vinyl alcohol)/phytic acid/amino-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PVA/PA/NH2-POSS) conductive composite hydrogel prepared via a facile freeze–thaw cycle method. Within this hydrogel, PA acts as a cross-linking agent and ionizes hydrogen ions to endow the material with ionic conductivity, while NH2-POSS acts as a second cross-linking agent by increasing the cross-linking density of the three-dimensional network structure. The effect of the content of NH2-POSS is investigated, and the composite hydrogel with 2 wt % NH2-POSS displays a uniform and dense three-dimensional (3D) network microporous structure, high conductivity of 2.41 S/m, and tensile strength and elongation at break of 361 kPa and 363%, respectively. This hydrogel is biocompatible and has demonstrated the application as a strain sensor monitoring different human movements. The assembled sensor is stretchable, self-recoverable, and highly sensitive with fast response time (220 ms) and excellent sensitivity (GF = 3.44).

A mechanically strong conductive hydrogel reinforced by diaminotriazine hydrogen bonding

Wu Qian,Xu Bing,Wei Jun-jie,Wang Qing,Wang Qi-gang,Liu Wen-guang

Over the past decades, the urgent need for high strength conductive hydrogels in diverse applications has motivated an unremitting effort to combine the improved mechanical properties of hydrogels with conductive performances. In this work, high strength conductive hydrogels intensified with intermolecular hydrogen bonding are fabricated by in situ mixing poly(2-vinyl-4,6-diamino-1,3,5-triazine- co -polyethylene glycol diacrylates) (PVDT-PEGDA) hydrogels with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS). The conductive hydrogels in deionized water exhibit high mechanical performances with compressive strength and tensile strength in the range of 7.58−9.52 MPa and 0.48−1.20 MPa respectively, which are ascribed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions of diaminotriazine-diaminotriazine (DAT-DAT) in the network. Meanwhile, adding PEDOT/PSS can significantly increase both the specific conductivities and equilibrium water contents of the hydrogels. These cytocompatible conductive hydrogels may have a great potential to be used as electrical stimuli responsive soft biomaterials.

Ultra-adhesive Poly(acrylic acid)-Based Hydrogel as a Flexible Sensor for Capturing Human-Motion Signal

Zijian Gao,Mengliang Bi,Zhaohui Jin,Jian Sun,Huajing Gao,Guanghui Gao

Conductive hydrogels are widely applied in wearable sensors, soft robotics, and human-interactive devices owing to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, we prepared an ultra-adhesive poly(acrylic acid)/Feb/Li2SO4c hydrogel. The maximum peeling forces of the hydrogel with respect to an aluminum substrate and a titanium surface were 1380 and 1619 N·m–1, respectively. The elongation at break of the hydrogel was 2450%, and the breaking stress was 98 kPa. Owing to the synergistic effect of the −COOH–Fe3+ complex and H bonds, the prepared hydrogels exhibited self-healing properties. Because of the presence of lithium sulfate, the hydrogel exhibited electrical conductivity (up to 0.0195 S·cm–1). The hydrogel could be used as a strain sensor with a gauge factor of 21.12. The high sensitivity of the hydrogel enabled it to quickly respond to changes in the speed and angle of human joint movements. Therefore, the hydrogel sensor could capture signals from low-amplitude movements such as speaking, smiling, and frowning. The simple preparation strategy for an adhesive, self-healing, frost-resistant, and conductive hydrogel reported herein can broaden the range of applications of wearable electronic devices.

Fully Physically Crosslinked Conductive Hydrogel with Ultrastretchability, Transparency, and Self-Healing Properties for Strain Sensors

Feng Ji,Pengbo Shang,Yingkai Lai,Jinmei Wang,Guangcai Zhang,Dengchao Lin,Jing Xu,Daniu Cai,Zhihui Qin

Currently, conductive hydrogels have received great attention as flexible strain sensors. However, the preparation of such sensors with integrated stretchability, transparency, and self-healing properties into one gel through a simple method still remains a huge challenge. Here, a fully physically crosslinked double network hydrogel was developed based on poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) and κ-carrageenan (Car). The driving forces for physical gelation were hydrogen bonds, ion bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The resultant PHEAA-Car hydrogel displayed stretchability (1145%) and optical transparency (92%). Meanwhile, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel exhibited a self-healing property at 25 °C. Additionally, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel-based strain sensor could monitor different joint movements. Based on the above functions, the PHEAA-Car hydrogel can be applied in flexible strain sensors. Keywords:conductive hydrogel;carrageenan;self-healing;strain sensor

Conductive hydrogels with core–shell structures to realize super-stretchable, highly sensitive, anti-dehydrating, non-freezing and self-adhesive capabilities

Wentang Wang,Xinyue Deng,Jinlong Lu,Chunhui Luo

Traditional conductive hydrogels are inevitably dehydrated by water evaporation when exposed to dry environments, which greatly retards their applications. Although great efforts have been devoted to reducing water evaporation, a combination of excellent stretchability, high sensitivity, non-freezing properties and self-adhesive capability has hardly been realized. Inspired by painting, an emulsion from poly butyl acrylate was prepared and coated onto the surface of a micellar cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel to prepare a hydrophobic coated PAM gel (C-PAM). The presence of a hydrophobic layer endowed it with excellent anti-drying capability (84 ± 0.45% weight retention after 7 days under ambient conditions), while micelle-like aggregates imparted excellent extensibility (elongation at break = 5200%). The introduction of poly butyl acrylate also empowered self-adhesive properties. The C-PAM hydrogel could adhere to rubber, cardboard, metal, wood, glass and plastic with strengths of 38.59 ± 8.29, 47.42 ± 8.06, 15.53 ± 2.61, 46.54 ± 7.92, 14.71 ± 2.17 and 29.33 ± 3.11 kPa, respectively. The adoption of sodium chloride (NaCl) imparted high sensitivity (GF = 6.41) and anti-freezing properties (−20 °C). Bearing multi-functions, the reported strategy is expected to significantly broaden the applications of conductive hydrogels.

MXene-Incorporated Conductive Hydrogel Simulating Myocardial Microenvironment for Cardiac Repair and Functional Recovery

Shan Yu,Ling Wang,Mengdie Chen,Yanjun Chen,Zhenbo Peng

Myocardial infarction (MI) remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, necessitating advanced therapeutic strategies to address the resulting electrical disconnection and pathological remodeling. This study developed a conductive hydrogel by covalently cross-linking silk fibroin and hyaluronic acid, integrating MXene nanosheets to mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM). Results demonstrated that the incorporation of MXene significantly enhanced the hydrogel’s conductivity, with SH-M5 exhibiting the highest conductivity of 0.32 S/m. The SH-M5 hydrogel effectively improved electrical signal transmission and enhanced the recovery of the left ventricular function in myocardial infarction. These findings underscore the transformative role of MXene in enhancing the functional properties of hydrogels for myocardial repair. The conductive hydrogel demonstrated a unique capacity to integrate mechanical reinforcement, electrical conductivity, and biocompatibility, presenting a promising platform for treating myocardial infarction and advancing regenerative medicine.

Multifunctional conductive hydrogels with layered polydopamine-coated polyaniline for high-sensitivity small-deformation flexible sensing

Chunyang Wang,Fangfang Wang,Jiankang Liu,Yue Qi,Xinlei Yan,Yu Liu

Hydrogels hold promising application prospects in flexible sensing due to their flexibility, biocompatibility, and capability to provide a wet environment. For small strain sensing in health monitoring, hydrogels must possess high conductivity and strong adhesion to achieve high sensitivity. To meet these requirements, this work utilized dopamine to self-assemble and encapsulate polyaniline (PANI) in alkaline solutions (pH=10), forming a structure of polydopamine (PDA) layers coating PANI (PDA@PANI). This enhanced the hydrophilicity and dispersion of PANI as a hydrogel conductive additive, improved charge transfer efficiency, increased conductivity, and introduced PDA for superior hydrogel adhesion properties. A dynamic redox system using gallic acid (GA), Fe 3 + , and hydrogen peroxide generates hydroxyl radicals and quinone/semiquinone radicals at room temperature, initiating acrylic acid polymerization to form Fe y (GA/PAA) hydrogels. Incorporating the PDA@PANI solution into this system significantly improves both adhesion and conductivity. The resulting PDA 0.04 @PANI-Fe 0.2 (GA/PAA) hydrogels contain numerous dynamically reversible bonds, demonstrating favorable energy dissipation. These hydrogels exhibit a maximum tensile strength of 131.14 kPa, self-adhesion strength of 30.85 kPa, and conductivity of 0.92 S m −1 . They also possess self-healing, ultraviolet-blocking, and antibacterial attributes. As wearable strain sensors, the hydrogels adhere well to human skin, converting deformation, particularly small strain, into relative resistance changes. They exhibit high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and rapid response characteristics, making them effective for monitoring human movement. Therefore, this preparation strategy holds significant potential for wearable sensors designed to detect small human motion.

Chrysalis-inspired high-toughness low-modulus conductive hydrogel sensor for intelligent sensing

Yugui Cheng,Simian Fu,Kaiming Jin,Yiying Liu,Jingtong Ma,Deliang Li,Qingying Lyu,Yehan Li,Xiaoyang Jiang,Ruonan Liu,Ye Tian

Hydrogels displaying both high toughness and flexibility hold substantial practical value. However, it has been challenging to achieve these properties simultaneously. To address this challenge, we developed a special structure hydrogel named PAB-S inspired by chrysalis shell. Astragalus polysaccharide (AP) was copolymerized with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and betaine hydrochloride (BH) to prepare a low-modulus hydrogel, PAB. Subsequently, surface modification of the PAB hydrogel using sodium phytate (SP) resulted in the formation of the “shell” structured PAB-S hydrogel. The fracture strength of the shell-structured hydrogel increased by about 0.8 MPa. Meanwhile, PAB-S had a maximum tensile strain of 418 %, a toughness of 6.82 MJ/m 3 , and a modulus of elasticity of approximately 0.6 MPa. In addition, PAB-S hydrogel offers high strain sensitivity (GF up to 4.7), ultra-low response time of 20 ms. Finally, leveraging 2.4G communication technology and a deep learning (1D-CNN) algorithm, advanced functionalities such as wireless remote intelligent control, and deep learning-based finger grip disorder identification were realized using the PAB-S hydrogel sensor. The PAB-S hydrogel sensor holds promising prospects for applications in fields including deep learning, intelligent sensing, medical rehabilitation, and human–machine synchronization.

Balancing stretchability and conductivity: Carbon nanotube layer-enhanced non-ionic conductive hydrogels with a sandwich structure

Jie Ren,Yunbin Wang,Zhihan Liu,Kai Liu,Xu Xiang

In non-ionic conductive hydrogels, conductivity often conflicts with mechanical properties, posing a challenge in creating hydrogels that strike a balance between conductivity and mechanical properties. Here, we addressed this issue by integrating carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT) layers in a sandwich structure onto the surface of the cationic hydrogel (P(AM- co -DMDAAC), PAD), followed by dehydration for densification. This approach simultaneously improved the conductivity of the hydrogel while maintaining its stretchability. The stability of the composite structure was ensured through electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and physical entanglement between the PAD hydrogel and the CNT layer. Additionally, adjusting the water–solid ratio of the hydrogel allows fine-tuning of its conductivity and stretchability. Remarkably, at a 500 % water–solid ratio, the hydrogel achieved a conductivity of 2.3 S/m. By further reducing the water content, the conductivity could be increased to 25 S/m, significantly higher than similar hydrogels. The PAD-CNT hydrogel found applications in swelling response, tunable resistance wires, and as strain sensors. Notably, the sandwich structure enables the PAD-CNT hydrogel to output capacitive signals, exhibiting a more sensitive response in monitoring human movement. Overall, this study introduces a novel composite structure for conductive hydrogels, holding tremendous potential in flexible conductivity and smart response fields.
