Poly(acrylic acid)/Dipeptide Double-Network Hydrogel to Achieve a Highly Stretchable Strain Sensor

Xin Luo,Boya Ding,Xingcen Liu

Flexible and stretchable strain sensors can be applied for human health monitoring and disease diagnoses via the output of multiple biophysical signals. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate short-peptide-based strain sensors. Here, we prepared a novel polymer-dipeptide double-network hydrogel with excellent stretchability, responsiveness, and stability. The poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) gel, by cross-linking, maintains mechanical and flexible properties, and the fluorenyl methoxycarbonyl-diphenylalanine (Fmoc-FF) network, by non-covalent interactions, is helpful for energy dissipation. With increasing tensile or compression strains, the PAA/Fmoc-FF hydrogel exhibited a high mechanical strength and fast recovery. Moreover, as the presence of KCl improves the electronic conductivity, the hybrid gel exhibited a cyclic strain-stress performance, which is the foundation of a strain sensor. Based on that, its application as a motion sensor was demonstrated by monitoring the movements of human joints, such as the forefinger, wrist, elbow, and knee. Consequently, the hybrid polymer-peptide gel could be an ideal candidate for wearable sensors in the future. Keywords:strain sensor;double-network hydrogel;dipeptide;poly(acrylic acid)

Ultrastretchable, self-healable and adhesive composite organohydrogels with a fast response for human–machine interface applications

Zhihui Xie,Zhuo Chen,Xiangshu Hu,Hao-Yang Mi,Jian Zou,Heng Li,Yuejun Liu,Zhi Zhang,Yinghui Shang,Xin Jing

Hydrogel based flexible sensors have been considered as promising wearable devices in human–machine interactions, which are of great significance in mobile communications, personal healthcare, and intelligent robots. To meet the requirements of practical applications especially in harsh environments, a multifunctional strain sensor was designed and fabricated based on the polydopamine–reduced oxide graphene/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/polyacrylamide composite organohydrogel (PCOH) using ethylene glycol (Eg)–H2O binary solvent as the replacement medium, which displayed an excellent anti-freezing property (−40 °C for 24 h) owing to the low freezing point of the Eg in the PCOH, high self-healing efficiency (92% tensile strength and 90% elongation at break), excellent stretchability (1350%), high sensitivity (a gauge factor of 3.19 with the strain ranging from 0 to 500%), fast response time (90 ms), long durability (800 cycles), and a wide temperature detection range (−40 °C to 60 °C), respectively. When used as a strain sensor, it was able to detect various human motions such as finger, wrist, and knee movements, and facial micro-expressions. Moreover, we also attached the flexible sensor to the yoga equipment or a neck brace for practical applications, and it could also detect the movements of the human body. Specifically, as a wearable human–machine interface device, a smart glove that takes advantage of the excellent properties of the PCOH was developed for hand gesture recognition via transmitting data to a smart phone with a real-time display via a bluetooth wireless system. Thus, these multifunctional PCOH based strain sensors have broad application prospects in human–machine interactions, sports training, and personal healthcare.

Highly conductive hydrogel sensors driven by amylose with freezing and dehydration resistances

Yiyan Gao,Yang Gao,Zhixin Zhang,Yuanrui Wang,Xiuyan Ren,Fei Jia,Guanghui Gao

Conductive hydrogels are ideal materials for preparing wearable strain sensing devices due to their flexibility and stretchability. However, most hydrogels exhibit poor freezing resistance and weak water-holding ability, thus hindering the working range of hydrogel-based sensors in extreme environments. Here, a conductive hydrogel featuring conspicuous anti-freezing and water retention abilities was prepared by integrating amylose (AMY) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/glycerol/NaCl hydrogel. AMY possesses a number of hydroxyl groups, which could interact with PVA and glycerin via hydrogen bonds, enhancing the toughness of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between glycerol and water molecules, the hydrogel displayed water-retaining properties after 7 days of storage in an open environment. The synergistic action of NaCl and glycerol prevented the crystallization of water at low temperatures, endowing the hydrogel with outstanding conductivity and stretchability at −20 °C. Furthermore, the hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (GF = 2.55), fast response/recovery time, and good durability and biocompatibility, which accurately detected joint movements and physiological signals at room temperature or under extreme conditions. Therefore, conductive hydrogels would possess significant application prospects in health detection, disease diagnosis, and artificial intelligence.

A flexible, robust cellulose/phytic acid/polyaniline hydrogel for all-in-one supercapacitors and strain sensors

Huixiong Wan,Chaoran Qin,Ang Lu

Herein, a flexible, stretchable and highly ionic conductive cellulose/phytic acid/polyaniline hydrogel with sandwich-shaped structures was fabricated by in situ growth of polyaniline onto a cellulose/phytic acid hydrogel. The as-prepared conductive hydrogel was assembled into an all-in-one supercapacitor. Benefiting from the in situ polymerized polyaniline particles in the cellulose matrix, which effectively reduced the interfacial resistance between the electrode and electrolyte, the all-in-one supercapacitor showed a high areal capacitance of 1210.7 mF cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA cm−2, a maximum energy density of 168.2 μW h cm−2 and a maximum power density of 669.1 μW cm−2, outperforming reported flexible all-in-one supercapacitors. The capacitance also remained at 89% after 1000 bending cycles, due to the excellent mechanical properties. On the other hand, the cellulose/phytic acid/polyaniline hydrogel also demonstrated great potential as a strain sensor due to the enhanced conductivity caused by involving polyaniline. A zig-zag pattern was introduced to realize strain-controlled contact of resistive hydrogel traces, and the structural strain sensor demonstrated a high gauge factor up to 20.74, capable of detecting most human activities with high sensitivity and durability. The present work shed light on the design and fabrication of cellulose hydrogel-based electronic devices with high performance for real-life scenarios.

Application of Coke-Based Graphene Produced via Ultrasonic Ball Milling in Flexible Strain Sensors

Pengfei Li,Dada Yang,Hongyue Chen,Yangxi Bai,Yang Hou,Qiaorui Sheng,Shuai Zhu

Graphene has exceptional electrical and mechanical properties, which make it an ideal material for wearable flexible strain sensors. However, its efficient and eco-friendly production remains constrained by challenges such as a complex process, high cost, and environmental pollution. To address those issues, this study proposes an ultrasonic ball milling method in a NMP bath using NMP as a solvent, incorporating alumina abrasive as microballs and stearic acid as interlayer additives to exfoliate coke into coke-based graphene. The resultant coke-based graphene is employed in the fabrication of sandwich-type flexible strain sensors. Tests indicate that the sensor exhibits excellent tensile strain (0–20%) and pressure strain (0–1000 kPa) sensing performances, maintaining stable operation after 500 tensile tests and 500 pressure tests, with quick response times (tensile strain response time: 257/353 ms, pressure strain response time: 192/256 ms). When applied to the human body, it can monitor the relative changes in resistance due to movement and the stimulus signals caused by external factors on the skin’s surface. This method holds significant application value for the eco-friendly and low cost preparation of graphene, enabling high-quality and large-scale production of graphene strain flexible sensors.

A Polypyrrole/Carbon Nanotube Based Hydrogel Sensor With High Sensitivity for Strain Detection

Yan Li,Yan Yang,Feng Gao,Fan Zhou,Wei Cheng

Conductive hydrogels hold significant promise in the fields of flexible electronics and smart sensing applications owing to their outstanding stretchability and electrical conductivity. In this study, a dual-network hydrogel based on polyacrylamide (PAAM) and sodium alginate (SA) networks was constructed to fabricate highly sensitive strain sensors. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated into the hydrogel system, and polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were synthesized using SA as a soft template. During preparing process, ultrasonic oscillation was employed to facilitate the uniform distribution of PPy in the hydrogel matrix, and then a CNTs–PPy conductive pathway was formed, thereby enhancing the conductivity and sensitivity of the hydrogel. The prepared PAAM–SA–CNTs–PPy hydrogel exhibits high electrical conductivity (4.84 S/m), superior mechanical properties (including a tensile strength of 683.5 kPa at 812%), high toughness, good self-healing, and adhesion properties. The assembled strain sensors demonstrate high sensing capability, a wide measurement range (the gauge factor of 2.67 for 0%–400% strain and the gauge factor of 5.25 for 400%–800% strain), rapid response times (126 ms), and good stability. The developed hydrogel-based conductive strain sensor has the potential to be excellent candidates as wearable sensing devices for monitoring human movements.

Janus Hydrogel with Both Sticky Adhesion and Slippery Antifouling Properties for Strain Sensing

Lide Xu,Yumin Wang,Hua Li,Zhiqiang Hou,Xiao Miao,Gan Miao,Fangchao Li,Jingwei Lu,Guina Ren,Xiaotao Zhu

Conductive hydrogels with self-adhesive property have received increasing attention in the fields of human–computer interaction, smart wearable devices, and soft electronic materials; however, they are easily contaminated by oil due to their sticky property, which will degrade their appearance and performance in daily use and make it difficult to be used in the complex oily water environment. Herein, a type of Janus TA@PVA/PSBMA hydrogel with slippery oil repellency and sticky adhesion is prepared by partially compounding the PVA/PSBMA hydrogel with tannic acid (TA) molecules through a unilateral soaking method. The upper PVA/PSBMA hydrogel layer in the Janus hydrogel exhibits excellent antioil fouling capability in air, underwater, and even under oil environments, because of the strong water affinity of the zwitterionic PSBMA chains. Interestingly, the bottom TA@PVA/PSBMA hydrogel layer can adhere to various substrates with bonding strength through active interactions between the TA molecules and the substrates. Exploiting its conductive, antifouling, and self-adhesive properties, the obtained Janus TA@PVA/PSBMA hydrogel is demonstrated as a strain sensor that can stably monitor large and subtle body movements in air, underwater, and oily wastewater. This work is expected to present a material for reliable sensing in complex environments.

Highly Sensitive Strain Sensor Based on a Stretchable and Conductive Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Phytic Acid/NH2-POSS Hydrogel with a 3D Microporous Structure

Liang Shao,Ying Li,Zhonglei Ma,Yang Bai,Jie Wang,Peiyun Zeng,Pin Gong,Fuxiong Shi,Zhanyou Ji,Yang Qiao,Ran Xu,Juanjuan Xu,Guohong Zhang,Caiyun Wang,Jianzhong Ma

Conductive hydrogel-based wearable strain sensors with tough, stretchable, self-recoverable, and highly sensitive properties are highly demanded for applications in electronic skin and human–machine interface. However, currently, hydrogel-based strain sensors put forward higher requirements on their biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and sensitivity. Herein, we report a poly(vinyl alcohol)/phytic acid/amino-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PVA/PA/NH2-POSS) conductive composite hydrogel prepared via a facile freeze–thaw cycle method. Within this hydrogel, PA acts as a cross-linking agent and ionizes hydrogen ions to endow the material with ionic conductivity, while NH2-POSS acts as a second cross-linking agent by increasing the cross-linking density of the three-dimensional network structure. The effect of the content of NH2-POSS is investigated, and the composite hydrogel with 2 wt % NH2-POSS displays a uniform and dense three-dimensional (3D) network microporous structure, high conductivity of 2.41 S/m, and tensile strength and elongation at break of 361 kPa and 363%, respectively. This hydrogel is biocompatible and has demonstrated the application as a strain sensor monitoring different human movements. The assembled sensor is stretchable, self-recoverable, and highly sensitive with fast response time (220 ms) and excellent sensitivity (GF = 3.44).

A simple method of fabricating nickel-coated cotton fabrics for wearable strain sensor

Zhang Chuanjie,Zhou Guangsheng,Rao Weida,Fan Lingling,Xu Weilin,Xu Jie

Abstract Conductive fabrics have achieved significant attention in the field of wearable electronics. Herein, a novel and simple method was developed to fabricate nickel-coated cotton fabrics. Triazine groups were bonded onto the cotton fabrics through treating by cyanuric chloride solution to absorb silver ions and to form a catalytical layer on the fabrics, which could successfully initiate the subsequent electroless deposition (ELD) of nickel (Ni). The cyanuric chloride concentration and ELD time were optimized. Compared to conventional methods, superior conductivity as well as good adhesion was obtained because of the stable affinity of triazine groups to metals. The surface conductivity of the as-prepared Ni-coated fabrics was as high as 21.82 S cm −1 . The strain sensing properties of the Ni-coated fabrics were studied, demonstrating high sensitivity and rapid response. These attractive properties of the Ni-coated cotton fabrics suggest that the proposed method is expected to be used in the fabrication of wearable strain sensors. Graphical Abstract

Highly sensitive natural rubber/pristine graphene strain sensor prepared by a simple method

Haijun Liu,Hanyang Gao,Guoxin Hu

Uniform dispersion of pristine graphene in polymers has always been a difficulty in the research and industry. In this paper, a simple but effective method was used to uniformly disperse the pristine graphene in NR matrix to prepare an NR/pristine graphene composite. The conductivity of this composite with 5 wt% graphene loading fraction was ∼0.005 S/m, around 4 orders of magnitude higher than that prepared by other methods with a similar loading fraction. The gauge factor (GF) of the strain sensor using the as-prepared composite as the component could be as high as 46, taking a lead positon in the reported strain sensors. Owing to the high sensibility, the sensor was suitable to be used for the detection of very subtle motions such as breathing or heartbeat. In a wrist-pulse testing, premature beats, less forceful heartbeats, and the “P”“T”“D″ waves of the heartbeats could be precisely monitored and distinguished. Swallowing and vocalization could also be efficiently detected by attaching the sensor on the subject's throat.

Highly Stretchable, Transparent and Adhesive Ionogel Based on Chitosan-Poly(acrylic acid) Double Networks for Flexible Strain Sensors

Yuan Zhu,Xuemei Li,Zhenjie Zhao,Yongri Liang,Limin Wang,Yingdan Liu

A stretchable double-network (DN) ionogel composed of a physically crosslinked network of chitosan (CS) and a chemically crosslinked network of polyacrylic acid (PAA) was prepared in an ionic liquid ([EMIM][OAc]) using a one-step polymerization method. In this ionogel (CS/PAA), the CS and the PAA polymer chains served as backbones, which constructed an interpenetrating DN structure via numerous hydrogen bonds formed through the hydroxyl, amino and carboxyl groups on the polymer chains. The DN structure improves the mechanical properties of the ionogel. Therefore, the CS/PAA DN ionogel exhibited outstanding mechanical performance in many ways: tensile strength up to 2.04 MPa, strain range up to 1046% and the value of toughness up to 8.52 MJ/m3. The ionogel also showed good self-recovery performance, fatigue resistance, ability to work in a broad temperature range (−20~80 °C) and adhesion properties. As a flexible sensor, the CS/PAA DN ionogel showed high strain sensitivity (gauge factor = 6.235). It can sensitively detect human motion (such as joint-bending, vocal fold vibration, walking gait and other human body motions), revealing the practical application potential of flexible electronic devices. Keywords:ionogel;double network;chitosan;adhesive;strain sensor

Three-dimensional printing of a tunable graphene-based elastomer for strain sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity

Kai Huang,Shaoming Dong,Jinshan Yang,Jingyi Yan,Yudong Xue,Xiao You,Jianbao Hu,Le Gao,Xiangyu Zhang,Yusheng Ding

A graphene-based elastomer for sensors with tunable and high sensitivity was fabricated by using three-dimensional printing, in which a printable ink was developed by homogenizing graphene and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). To make the elastomer tunable and highly sensitive, different microstructures of three-dimensional graphene-PDMS (3DGP) can be formed. Attributed to its well-interconnected scaffolds and designed microstructures, 3DGP demonstrates a series of multifunctional properties, such as excellent stability and a large gauge factor (up to 448 at 30% strain). 3DGP has continuously stable piezoresistive behavior, even after 100 compress-release cycles under 10% strain. By considering the essential properties of 3DGP scaffolds, such as filament diameter , interaxial angle and interlayer space , the printed 3DGP structure can be tunable and highly sensitive. The controllable design and scalable fabrication of the 3DGP advanced functional material suggests that tunable strain sensors and wearable devices have great potential for different applications, which is a finding that can be referenced by future studies on 3D graphene-based sensors.
