Design and fabrication of impact resistant metal materials under extreme strain rate conditions is of great importance, especially in the field of collision protection of satellites and spacecraft. As inspired by the ‘brick-and-mortar’ microstructure induced excellent impact resistance in natural nacre , coupling with extraordinary intrinsic impact resistance of graphene (Gr), in this work a nacre-inspired Gr/Cu nanocomposite is fabricated, and its anisotropic extreme strain rate (at a level of ∼10 8 /s) deformation behaviors are studied by using laser-induced microprojectile impact tests (up to a speed of ∼2.5 Km/s). Such extreme impact loading together with pinning effect of graphene can lead to highly stabilized high-density deformation twins and stacking faults at impact front even in the ultrafine grained Cu matrix. As the loading direction perpendicular to the composite layers, volume of severely-deformed region and the density of twinning and stacking faults at impact front is one third and half of that in the parallel impact direction, respectively. Such discrepancies indicate the capacity to dissipate impact energy in the perpendicular direction is ∼6 times higher than that of the parallel one, in spite of only ∼0.9 vol% graphene incorporated in the bio-inspired composites, evidencing architecture design plays an important role in impact resistance of materials under extreme dynamic conditions.

Inspired by nacreous architecture, the 2024Al/20–50 vol% B 4 C composites with a lamellar-interpenetrated structure were successfully manufactured via freeze casting and pressure infiltration, and the quasi-static and dynamic characteristics were conducted at strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 3000 s −1 . The strength of the composites enhanced as the strain rate increased up to 2000 s −1 since the strain rate hardening effect facilitated the accumulation of dislocations. At the strain rate of 3000 s −1 , the adiabatic shear banding and its induced cracking were formed as the strengthening mechanisms were overcome by the thermal softening, which converted the dislocation structure from dislocation clusters to recrystallized grains, accompanied by a decrease in dislocation density, thereby degrading the compressive strength . A rigid network structure was formed in the composites with high particle content, and each particle had more inter-particle contact points, which made the strength of the composites increase with the increase of particle reinforcement content. This was also the reason why the strain rate sensitivity of the composites was considerably raised by introducing more particle reinforcement . However, increasing particle content heightened the composite susceptibility to strain localization and adiabatic shear damage, resulting in more brittleness of the 2024Al/50 vol% B 4 C composite at high strain rates . These findings could deepen the comprehension of the mechanical response and damage evolution of nacre-like composites exposed to extreme conditions and promote their applications.

Many biological hydrogels possess remarkable mechanical performances under both quasi-static and impact loadings, yet such mechanical robustness over a wide range of strain rates has not been achieved in synthetic hydrogels due to the lack of understanding of dynamic responses at high strain rates. Here we study the dynamic responses of tough hydrogels at high strain rates by using the Ca-alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogel as a model material and a modified split Hopkinson press bar (SHPB) system. We show that the Ca-alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogel is also much tougher than the two constituents at high strain rates. The strength of Ca-alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogel at 1.2 × 10 4 s −1 is two orders of magnitude higher than the stress at the same strain at 0.25 s −1 . We identify the fracture points by using snap rings to control the maximum compressive strains during the loading process and validate them by subsequent cyclic loading and unloading at 0.25 s −1 . We formulate a five-parameter constitutive model to describe the visco-hyperelastic behaviors and achieve satisfactory agreements between theory and experiment. We further interpret the underlying mechanisms of the strain rate-dependent deformation and fracture behaviors by comparing them with the responses of the two constituents. The importance and opportunities of studying the dynamic responses of tough hydrogels at high strain rates are discussed.

Dynamic deformations at extreme strain rates (>10 6 /s) are frequently encountered by metallic structural materials. According to continuum theory, increasing the modulus and thus speed of sound in metallic materials could lead to enhanced impact resistance, while such goals are difficult to achieve via conventional alloying methods. On the other hand, recent researches have revealed that carbon materials such as graphene have far larger in-plane speed of sound than metals and therefore are intrinsically impact resistant. In this work, graphene/copper (Gr/Cu) nanolaminates were fabricated by incorporating graphene into copper matrix, and its ballistic performance at extreme strain rates (∼3 × 10 7 /s) was quantified via laser-induced projectile impact tests (LIPITs). The specific energy dissipation of Gr/Cu nanolaminates is found to be 54 % higher than Cu. Post-mortem analysis revealed that graphene nanoinclusions could cause additional coordinative deformation in regions surrounding the perforation zone in Gr/Cu, leading to enhanced ballistic performance of Gr/Cu nanolaminates.

In this study, porous titanium and porous TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium alloy with a porosity of 55±2% were fabricated using the magnesium particle space holder-distillation-sintering process. Through performance tests and microstructural characterization, the differences and underlying mechanisms of their quasi-static and impact compression properties were investigated. Under quasi-static compression, the energy absorption density (65.01±11.70 MJ/m 3 ) and energy absorption efficiency (75.58±2.95%) of porous TC4 were significantly superior to those of porous titanium (28.77±3.16 MJ/m 3 and 59.98±5.05%, respectively), corresponding to 2.26 times higher in energy absorption density and 1.26 times higher in energy absorption efficiency. Macroscopically, porous TC4 exhibited a prolonged stress plateau owing to sufficient deformation and slow crack propagation. Microscopically, Al and V pinned dislocations, inhibited dynamic recovery, and promoted the formation of stable low-angle grain boundary (LAGB) networks, thereby avoiding strain localization. Under impact compression tested via SHPB over strain rates of 1282–4290 s -1 , porous TC4 demonstrated a more pronounced strain-rate strengthening effect. This is attributed to the elevation of the Peierls–Nabarro stress and the introduction of the solute drag effect by Al and V, which rendered dislocation motion highly dependent on strain rate. The study elucidates the regulatory role of alloying elements, quantifies the contribution of micro-factors to strain-rate strengthening, identifies Al and V as the core elements for performance enhancement, and provides key theoretical and technical foundations for the optimization of porous metallic materials.

The static and dynamic compressive properties of AlON ceramics were investigated using a universal testing machine and a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) device. The test results indicated that AlON ceramics exhibit nearly identical compressive strength under quasi-static loading. However, a significant strain rate strengthening effect was observed under dynamic loading. Elongated fragments were obtained when the specimens were subjected to quasi-static loading, while the fragments were finely granular for the specimens exposed to dynamic loading. During the compression of AlON ceramics, the pre-existing twins substantially impeded crack propagation and dislocation motion, and the fracture surfaces not only display conventional intergranular and transgranular fractures but also include the characteristics of secondary cracks, fragmented regions, dislocation networks, dislocation arrays, and even subgrain boundaries. Multiple dislocation motion modes and the formation of subgrain boundaries indicated a plastic behavior of AlON ceramics under high-strain-rate dynamic loading. AlON ceramics exhibit the complexity of dislocation behavior in response to impact force.

Silicone rubber-based composites are used as thermal protection materials due to their large deformability and excellent thermal insulation properties. In this study, two types of commercially available silicone rubbers were selected as the matrices for preparing flexible thermal protection materials. The influence of applied strain rates on the microstructure, ablation and ceramifiable behavior of silicone rubbers was studied. The research showed that the ablation performance of silicone rubbers deteriorated greatly at large strain rates. The reinforcement using deformable carbon fiber fabrics was proposed to effectively counter the deterioration of the ablative properties incurred by applying external strain. The back-face temperature reached as low as 186 °C when the samples were ablated at above 1000 °C for 50s at a strain rate of 20 %. The proposed strategy was proved helpful in developing high performance flexible thermal protection systems that exhibit promising application in the fields of aerospace and fire protection among others.

Bidirectional freeze casting combined with pressure infiltration has demonstrated significant potential as an effective approach for fabricating bioinspired lamellar composites with excellent strength and toughness. However, their dynamic mechanical response remains underexplored. In this study, B 4 C/2024Al composites with long-range ordered nacre-like architectures were fabricated using bidirectional freeze casting followed by pressure infiltration. The mechanical properties and deformation behavior under both quasi-static and dynamic compression conditions were systematically investigated. The results reveal that dynamic compressive strength and strain were significantly higher than their quasi-static counterparts, largely attributed to strain rate hardening and localized matrix melting. Compared to unidirectionally structured composites, the bidirectionally structured ones exhibited superior mechanical performance, achieving a maximum compressive strength of 1088.6 MPa at a strain rate of 3000 s −1 (40 vol% B 4 C/2024Al composite). A clear dependence of flow stress and energy absorption capability on B 4 C volume fraction was observed. As B 4 C content increased, the compressive strength rose, but dynamic strain energy density showed a decreasing trend beyond 20 vol% due to reduced ductility. Specifically, the energy density peaked at 133.08 MJ/m 3 for the 20 vol% composite and declined with further ceramic addition, indicating a trade-off between strength and impact energy absorption. The enhanced toughness under dynamic loading is primarily attributed to adiabatic shear localization in the aluminum matrix, which facilitates localized softening and strain accommodation. Additional contributions include crack deflection and branching within the hard ceramic layers, as well as plastic deformation and thermal softening-induced toughening mechanisms in the metallic phase. These findings highlight the promise of nacre-inspired B 4 C/Al composites for advanced lightweight armor systems, offering an optimized balance between strength, toughness, and energy absorption under high-strain-rate loading.
