Influence of nanocrystalline cellulose extracted from different precursors on properties of polyurethane elastomer composites

Wanqing Lei,Hui Pei,Changqing Fang,Xing Zhou,Xin Zhang,Mengyuan Pu

Nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) produced from waste paper by direct acid hydrolysis without any alkali or bleaching treatment was used to reinforce polyurethane elastomer (PU). By comparison, traditional cellulosic sources such as microcrystalline cellulose and waste cotton were also used to extract CNC and prepare polyurethane nanocomposites . The result showed that CNC extracted from waste paper had the largest aspect ratio, crystallinity and thermal stability. Three kinds of CNC all built interactions with polyurethane matrix through hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds . Amongst, polyurethane nanocomposites with CNC extracted from waste paper had the largest thermodynamic properties and stiffness. Briefly, CNC extracted from waste paper was comparable with CNC isolated from traditional cellulosic sources and could be used for stronger reinforcement of PU with lower cost. This work realized recycling of waste paper with a simple method and prepared a thermally resistant PU with low cost.

Enhanced production of levoglucosenone from pretreatment assisted catalytic pyrolysis of waste paper

Bo Wang,Kai Li,Dong-hong Nan,Shi-yu Feng,Bin Hu,Ti-peng Wang,Qiang Lu

A new method was developed for the selective production of levoglucosenone (LGO) from catalytic pyrolysis of waste paper. Copy paper (CP) was selected as the representative waste paper and subjected to single or combined pretreatment with ethanol and HCl solutions. The influences of pretreatment method, acid concentration, and pretreatment temperature were systematically investigated to reveal their impacts on the physicochemical properties and pyrolytic characteristics of CP as well as LGO formation. The catalytic pyrolysis experiments of pretreated CP were conducted using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and lab-scale device under different pyrolysis temperatures and sample/catalyst ratios. The results showed that the combined ethanol-HCl pretreatment was the most conducive to LGO production, with the optimal pretreatment conditions of acid concentration of 23% and pretreatment temperature of 80 °C. With phosphoric acid-activated carbon (PAC) as the catalyst, the maximum yields of LGO reached 18.15 wt% and 14.76 wt% at 260 °C from Py-GC/MS and lab-scale experiments with sample/catalyst ratios of 4 and 5, respectively. Compared with cellulose and biomass materials, catalytic pyrolysis of pretreated CP had the advantages of high LGO yield and low production temperature.

Up-cycling of waste paper for increased photo-catalytic hydrogen generation of graphitic carbon nitride under visible light exposure

Xu Tian,Mengqi Xue,Xiaonan Yang,Daochuan Jiang,Yupeng Yuan

Background Up-cycling of waste papers to value-added carbon products has significant environmental and economic benefits in real life. This work aims to recycle the waste papers to construct amorphous carbon modified graphitic carbon nitride composite photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water under visible light. Methods Amorphous carbon (labeled as a-C) was yielded from the office waste papers by simple sulphuric-acid treatment and then combined with graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) to form the g-CN/a-C composite photocatalysts by the thermolysis of a-C and melamine mixture. Significant Findings The addition of a-C enlarges the surface area of g-CN from 11.52 m 2 g −1 of pristine g-CN to 28.12 m 2 g −1 of g-CN/a-C-100. In addition, the a-C incorporation can significantly separate the electrons from the photoexcited g-CN owing to the excellent conductivity of a-C. As a result, an increased photocatalytic H 2 generation was realized under visible light exposure. The g-CN/a-C-100 sample with optimized a-C contents offers the highest photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of up to 17.1  μ mol h −1 , which is ∼12 times higher than that of pristine g-CN under the same condition. The present study manifests the great potential of the recycling of office waste papers for increased photocatalytic H 2 generation.

Upcycling waste cartons into an efficient Fenton-like chainmail catalyst CoOx@C: Process, performance, and mechanism

Chen-Xuan Li,Wenhui Xu,Bai Li,Xiangyang Xu,Xian-Zhong Fu,Rui Deng,Feng Zhang,Yimin Sun,Kangping Cui

Waste cartons produced by e-commerce and the express delivery industry pose urgent environmental and social challenges, making their recycling a critical issue in recent years. In this study, a novel strategy for upcycling waste cartons into a Fenton-like chainmail catalyst, CoO x @C-P-8 (CoO x confined carbonaceous matrix), through a one-step pyrolysis process using waste cartons adsorbed cobalt nitrate was proposed. The catalytic activity of CoO x @C-P-8 in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) was thoroughly evaluated. The results indicated that the combination CoO x @C-P-8 (0.3 g/L) and PMS (1.0 mM) could remove 92 % of TCH within 60 min. Mechanistic studies revealed that both singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and radicals (i.e. SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and HO • ) contributed to TCH removal, with cobalt-loading, N-doping, and the defective graphitic structure identified as the key governing factors. The unique chainmail structure of CoO x @C-P-8 endowed it with pronounced resistance to interference from ions (Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , H 2 PO 4 − , K + , Mg 2+ , and Na + ) and pH variations (pH 3.0–11.0). Furthermore, the high environmental viability of CoO x @C-P-8, evidenced by ease of magnetic separation and simple catalyst regeneration, was demonstrated. This work may offer a feasible strategy for upcycling waste cartons and also contribute substantively to the advancement of wastewater decontamination.

Nonflammable superhydrophobic passive cooling Cellulose-CaCO3 film

Chang-Lian Xu,Chongfeng Yuan,Zelong Yang,Xiaoxun Xu,Guiyin Wang,Zhanbiao Yang,Zhang Cheng,Shirong Zhang,Ting Li,Guochun Lv,Junzhuo Cai,Xin Qi

Energy consumption from air cooling systems in summer, water scarcity in hot regions, and the functional reusability of waste paper are emerging environmental problems. Finding solutions to these problems simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Herein, a superhydrophobic passive cooling Cellulose-CaCO 3 film with hierarchical nano-sheets was fabricated to realize daytime radiative cooling with a temperature drop of 15–20 °C in summer and water harvesting with harvesting efficiency of 387 mg cm −2 h −1 bd utilization of recycled waste paper. The superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film demonstrates its self-cleaning properties against inorganic and organic pollutants . Furthermore, the superhydrophobicity of the film was maintained after base/acid corrosions, dynamic water flushing, and thermal treatment at 100 °C for 7 h, exhibiting good durability of the superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film is nonflammable after exposure to fire combustion for 1 min. In addition to waste paper, waste maize straws, and pasteboards were also collected to produce superhydrophobic passive cooling films. Results indicate that the above three cellulose-based raw materials can be well used to prepare durable superhydrophobic passive cooling materials. Environmental toxicology assessments confirm the safety of the material. This study not only provides a protocol for preparing superhydrophobic materials; but also demonstrates their potential for passive cooling and water harvesting.

Modification-free carbon dots as turn-on fluorescence probe for detection of organophosphorus pesticides

Bixia Lin,Yun Yan,Manli Guo,Yujuan Cao,Ying Yu,Tingyun Zhang,Yan Huang,Duo Wu

It is important to detect pesticides residues due to the concern over food safety. In this work, the burning ash of waste paper was used as carbon source to synthesize carbon dots (C-dots). The fluorescence of obtained C-dots could been turn off by Fe 3+ which was from Fe 2+ oxidized by H 2 O 2 , organophosphorus pesticides could effectively inhibit the production of H 2 O 2 by destroying the acetylcholinesterase activity, so the fluorescence of C-dots hold turning on in the presence of organophosphorus pesticides. Based on above principle that the fluorescence intensity of C-dots was proportional to the pesticides concentration, take chlorpyrifos for example, a universal method for pesticides detection was established. The linear range was 0.01–1.0 μg/mL with detection limit of 3 ng/mL. The method was reliable and sensitive to actual samples. The imaging of chlorpyrifos on cabbages leaves indicated this method could be used for visualization detection of organophosphorus pesticides in vegetables.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water and wastepaper on Pt/TiO2 composites

Chunzheng Wu,Ling Fang,Fangjie Ding,Genxiang Mao,Xiaogu Huang,Shun Lu

Ultra-small Pt nanoparticles loaded on TiO 2 through in-situ photo-deposition for H 2 production via photo reforming of wastepaper was prepared in this study. The effect of noble metal cocatalyst, Pt loading, content of paper (e.g., napkin), and concentration of NaOH was investigated. Consequently, a highest H 2 production rate of 614.7 µmol/g/h was achieved in the optimum condition. It was found that both the solid paper and the dissolved part in the NaOH solution could scavenge the photo-generated holes and contribute to H 2 production. Our research provides a potential route for the reuse of wastepaper to produce clean fuel.

Tune wastepaper to hydrophobic membranes through metal-ion-induced lignocellulose nanofibril crosslinking for oil-water separation

Xiang Wang,Meiling Chen,R.M. Oshani Nayanathara,Zhao Zhang,Xuefeng Zhang

Herein, we proposed a metal-ion-induced surface nano-engineering technology for transforming hydrophilic waste newspaper (WNP) into a hydrophobic material suitable for oil-water separation, without using hydrophobic chemicals/materials. WNPs were swelled in a dilute ferric ion solution (i.e., 50 mM FeCl 3 ) followed by oven-drying to induce the coordination between ferric ions and hydroxyls of lignocellulose nanofibrils of the paper. This resulted in the crosslinking of lignocellulose nanofibrils and converted the hydrophilic WNP to the hydrophobic membrane (HM). The HM exhibited remarkable oil sorption capacity for various oils, up to 3.4 times its weight, and demonstrated good recyclability after undergoing 10 cycles of absorption-desorption-drying. Additionally, HM demonstrated the ability to effectively separate both immiscible oil-water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions in continuous gravity-driven oil-water separation processes. With the modification method and advantages in oil-water separation, the as-prepared HM exhibits great potential for application in oil spill treatment and environmental remediation.

Resource utilization of wastepaper and bentonite: Cu(II) removal in the aqueous environment

Longfei Zhang,Ping Wang,Xiqing Wang,Qi Zhang,Yunpu Wang,Yuhuan Liu,Lantian Zhao,Roger Ruan,Xian Cui

Contamination of heavy metals has always been a pressing concern. The dry-wet alternately treated carboxymethylcellulose bentonite (DW-CB) was successfully prepared by intercalating bentonite (BT) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) obtained by solvent processes using enzymatically digested wastepaper as cellulosic raw material, and the adsorption capacity of Cu 2+ on DW-CB in aqueous solution was investigated. A 98.18 ± 2.31 % removal efficiency was achieved by 4 g/L of DW-CB after 8 h in a solution containing 100 mg/L of Cu 2+ , which were 4.1 times and 1.5 times of that of BT and adsorbent prepared without alternating dry-wet process, respectively. The introduction of –COOH groups during the preparation of DW-CB enhanced the electrostatic interaction between DW-CB and Cu 2+ , which was the main driving force for Cu 2+ removal. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir model better described the adsorption process and adsorption capacity of Cu 2+ on DW-CB. DW-CB still showed high removal of Cu 2+ (19.61 ± 0.99 mg/g) in the presence of multiple metal ions , while exhibiting the potential for removal of Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ and K + , especially Mg 2+ (22.69 ± 1.48 mg/g). However, the interactions of organics with Cu 2+ severely affected the removal of Cu 2+ by DW-CB (removal efficiency: 17.90 ± 4.17 % - 95.33 ± 0.27 %). In this study, an adsorbent with high targeted adsorption of Cu 2+ was prepared by utilizing wastepaper and BT, which broadened the way of wastepaper resource utilization and had good economic and social benefits .

New approach to recycle office waste paper: Reinforcement for polyurethane with nano cellulose crystals extracted from waste paper

Wanqing Lei,Xing Zhou,Changqing Fang,Yaguang Li,Yonghua Song,Chenxi Wang,Zhigang Huang

New approach to recycle office waste paper was purposed in this paper, i.e., cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was extracted from waste paper and then used CNC as the organic filler to reinforce polyurethane elastomer (PUE) in thermal properties. A series of CNC/PUE nanocomposites was prepared in situ using a two-step process in solvent N,N-dimethylformamide solution by changing the content of CNC from 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 to 5 wt%. The results showed that CNC was covalently bonded to PUE, and specifically concerned with the hard segments of PUE resulting from the strong hydrogen bonding. The interactions between CNC and PUE caused the increased thermal and thermo-mechanical properties, and decreased water absorption of nanocomposites. Importantly, the initial degradation temperature of PUE with 2 wt% content CNC (CNC/PUE2) increased by 21 °C. CNC/PUE2 had the better comprehensive properties with the worse water absorption, which made CNC/PUE2 appealing in load bearing and outdoor applications. Hence, this work not only provided a new recycling method of waste paper but also provided a thermolstable PUE with lower cost.

Compressible and sensitive aerogels derived from graphene/waste paper for wearable pressure sensor

Li Ang,Cui Ce,Wang Weijie,Zhang Yue,Zhai Jianyu,Guo Ronghui,Cheng Cheng,Qin Wenfeng,Ren Erhui,Xiao Hongyan,Zhou Mi,Zhang Jinwei

Biomass-derived 3D and porous conductive aerogels have been considered as potential environmentally friendly material for wearable pressure sensors. However, the development of a simple strategy for the fabrication of biomass-derived aerogels with the properties of wide-sensing range, high sensitivity, and low detection is still significantly challenging. Here, graphene was incorporated into waste paper to prepare graphene-coated waste paper aerogel (GWA) using a simple “filtration-oven drying” method under atmospheric pressure. The GWA was further annealed to obtain carbonized graphene-coated waste paper aerogel (C-GWA) for low density and excellent resilience. The C-GWA shows 3D porous structure formed by interpenetrated fibers and low density (25 mg/cm 3 ). The pressure sensor based on C-GWA exhibits wide detection working range (0–132 kPa), ultra-low detection limit (2.5 Pa), and high sensitivity of (31.6 kPa −1 ). In addition, the pressure sensor can be used to detect human motions including the pulse of the human body, cheek blowing, and bending of human joints. The result indicates that the C-GWA-based sensor shows great potential for wearable electronic products.

Oil-Resistant and Wood-Inspired Superhydrophilic Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Aerogel with Vertically Aligned Channels for Effective Solar Interfacial Desalination and Wastewater Treatment

Jiehui Li,Ying Zhang,Qinghua Liu,Leihuan Mu,Hui Liu,Ruizhe Zhang,Xuedan Zhu,Cai-Li Sun,Jinmei He,Mengnan Qu

Environmental pollution and sewage surges necessitate effective water purification methods. Solar interfacial evaporation offers a promising solution, which needs advancements in salt resistance, efficiency, and stability. Herein, inspired by the structure of wood, the unidirectional freeze-drying method was used to develop the vertically aligned channels and antioil-fouling poly(vinyl alcohol)-CNTs-waste carton fiber@polydopamine (PVA-CNTs-WCF@PDA) aerogel for desalination and wastewater treatment. The anisotropic three-dimensional porous structure of the aerogel enables it to rapidly transport water to the evaporation interface and resist salt deposition. Meanwhile, its unique structure is combined with CNTs and PDAs with excellent broadband spectral absorption capacity because the composite aerogels can interact with water molecules to reduce their water vaporization enthalpy. The composite aerogel shows an excellent photothermal evaporation rate (2.626 kg m–2 h–1) and efficiency (94.24%) under one-sun irradiation. Additionally, the composite aerogel interface evaporator can conduct 10 consecutive evaporations in 3.5% brine, indicating that it has the ability to desalination. Finally, it is also used to purify an oil-in-water emulsion and mine wastewater. It can be seen that there are no obvious oil droplets in the treated emulsion and that the treatment effect of mine wastewater reaches 89.13%. The composite aerogel showed excellent application prospects in the field of water purification.
