Printable Tough Adhesive for Instant Fatigue-Resistant Bonding of Diverse Surfaces

Jupen Liu,Ping Zhang,Hongqiu Wei,Zhe Lu,You Yu

Adhesives can stably hold adherent components together. However, a simple design of a high-performance printable tough adhesive (PTA) with instant fatigue-resistant adhesion on various substrates is still a significant challenge. Here, the authors report a rapid design to meet this requirement that enables one-step adhesion of PTA on wet and dry, porous, and nonporous surfaces low as 5 s. This design gives an interfacial toughness of ≈3000 J m −2 and comparable mechanical and fatigue-resistant properties. The adhesive precursor can be used as an adhesive paint for bonding materials even underwater and maintains strong adhesion under several thousand cycles of large deformation or in a wide temperature range. Moreover, the PTA precursor is chemically stable and controllable, thus benefiting the printing of heterogeneous, 4D shape-memory composites and a wearable electroluminescent sensor. It is anticipated that this rapid one-step design of PTA opens new horizons to tough adhesion of diverse surfaces.

Development and performance of multi-stimuli actuations TiO2/rGO/EVA shape memory composites

Chengxue Li,Xiaojian Jiang,Jianhong Liu,Chunhui Zhang,Chunxiu Liu,Huikai Nan,Yubing Dong

To extend the service life of shape memory ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), the titanium dioxide/reduced graphene oxide/EVA composites (TiO 2 -P/rGO/EVA and TiO 2 -PF/rGO/EVA) were prepared by an impregnation method and modified with triethoxy-1H,1H,2H,2H-tridecafluoro-n-octylsilane and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane as hydrophobic agents, respectively. The hydrophobic/anti-icing properties, surface durabilities, shape memory properties, and UV-aging resistance of the composites were systematically investigated. The TiO 2 /rGO/EVA composites exhibit exceptional hydrophobic and anti-icing performance. The TiO 2 -P/rGO/EVA composites and TiO 2 -PF/rGO/EVA composites displayed water contact angles of 150.7° and 152.2°, respectively, with sliding angles of 6.4° and 4.9°, and both retained these values after durability tests. Frozen droplets on the TiO 2 -P/rGO/EVA composites could melt and slide off after 36 s of NIR irradiation. The composite displayed outstanding two-way shape memory behavior with multi-stimuli responsiveness, achieving reversible deformation under either 40 V electrical stimulation or NIR irradiation. It also possessed near-complete UV shielding (≈ 100%) and remarkable UV resistance: after 14 days UV exposure, it maintains 22.10% reversible strain and 99.35% shape recovery ratio; after 28 days, relative electrical conductivity remains at 87.5%. Hydrophobicity persists for over 48 h under UV irradiation in N 2 atmosphere. Furthermore, the TiO 2 /rGO/EVA composites surface wettability can be modulated through UV irradiation-washing-recoating cycles.

Multistimuli-Responsive Shape-Memory Composites with a Water-Assisted Self-Healing Function Based on Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Poly(vinyl alcohol)/MXene

Xiang-Rui Guo,Ping-Hou Sheng,Jing-Wan Hu,Ji Liu,Shi-Long Wang,Qian Ma,Zhong-Zhen Yu,Yun Ding

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have propelled the development of shape-memory polymers (SMPs) with sophisticated, environment-sensitive capabilities. Despite the progress, most of the existing SMPs are limited to responding to a single stimulus and show poor functionality, which has severely hindered their future applications. Herein, we report a high-performance multistimuli-responsive shape-memory and self-healing composite film fabricated by embedding MXene nanosheets into a conventional shape-memory sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. The incorporation of photothermal MXene nanosheets not only enhances the composite films’ mechanical strength but also provides efficient solar–thermal conversion and robust light-actuated shape-memory properties. The resultant composite films exhibit an exceptional shape-memory response to various stimuli including heat, light, and water. Meanwhile, the interfacial interactions can be modulated by adjusting the MXene content, thereby enabling precise manipulation of the shape-memory performance. Moreover, thanks to the intrinsic hydrophilicity of the components and the unique physically cross-linked network, the composite films also demonstrate an effective water-assisted self-healing capability with an impressive healing efficiency of 85.7%. This work offers insights into the development of multifunctional, multistimuli-responsive shape-memory composites, opening up new possibilities for future applications in smart technologies.

Synergistic water-driven shape memory performance and improving mechanism of grading photo-thermal curing shape memory composite

Wenxin Wang,Jing Yang,Wei Li,Yongtao Yao,Yaqian Yan,Wenjing Wang,Ning Wang,Jinsong Leng

Shape memory materials draw much attention due to various promising potential applications. This work prepares a novel shape memory composite via grading photo-thermal curing method, which has not yet been reported. Expectedly, it merges advantages of epoxy-based shape memory polymer (EP) and polyvinyl alcohol-based shape memory polymer (PVA), which has applicable stiffness and multi-stimuli responsive performance. The unsatisfactory mechanical properties of most water-driven shape memory polymer (SMP) is expected to be solved by this fabrication strategy, so that the application range of water-driven SMP could be further extended. The synergistic plasticization of PVA and EP dominates water-driven shape memory behavior of this composite. Interestingly, its water-driven shape memory performance is able to be further improved by immersed in HCl/EtOH solution. The glassy-to-rubbery modulus ratio ( E′ g /E′ r ) of the PVA/EP-HCl/EtOH is about 650 after immersed in 0.1 mol/L HCl/EtOH for 6 h. In addition, this immersed method also can solve the post curing problem of such cationic photocuring. It is an easy, efficient, economical strategy for improving synergistic water-driven shape memory performance. Furthermore, this shape memory composite is expected to provide new perspective and practical approach to realize the intellectualization of underwater deployment and release structure.

Bioactive NIR-II Light-Responsive Shape Memory Composite Based on Cuprorivaite Nanosheets for Endometrial Regeneration

Chenle Dong,Chen Yang,Muhammad Rizwan Younis,Jing Zhang,Gang He,Xingdi Qiu,Lian-Hua Fu,Dong-Yang Zhang,Hao Wang,Wenli Hong,Jing Lin,Xueqing Wu,Peng Huang

Intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) caused by mechanical damage or infection increase the risk of infertility in women. Although numerous physical barriers such as balloon or hydrogel are developed for the prevention of IUAs, the therapeutic efficacy is barely satisfactory due to limited endometrial healing, which may lead to recurrence. Herein, a second near-infrared (NIR-II) light-responsive shape memory composite based on the combination of cuprorivaite (CaCuSi 4 O 10 ) nanosheets (CUP NSs) as photothermal conversion agents and polymer poly( d , l -lactide- co -trimethylene carbonate) (PT) as shape memory building blocks is developed. The as-prepared CUP/PT composite possesses excellent shape memory performance under NIR-II light, and the improved operational feasibility as an antiadhesion barrier for the treatment of IUAs. Moreover, the released ions (Cu, Si) can stimulate the endometrial regeneration due to the angiogenic bioactivity. This study provides a new strategy to prevent IUA and restore the injured endometrium relied on shape memory composite with enhanced tissues reconstruction ability.
