Hydrogels with conductive properties hold significant promise in the realm of flexible electronics, owing to their pliability, outstanding conductivity, and diverse functionalities. Nevertheless, the majority of conductive hydrogels are prone to being brittle and easily damaged; as such, they are not adapt to cold environments, which seriously hinders their practical applications. Therefore, hydrogels that possess both conductivity and anti-freezing, as well as moisturizing, capabilities have garnered considerable interest, and these hydrogels can work stably in harsh environments. Phytic acid (PA), which mainly exists in plant seeds, is a kind of natural compound widely existing in nature that can be recycled; it provides electrical conductivity and anti-freezing to hydrogels. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing and moisturizing capabilities was prepared by incorporating PA into a polyacrylamide/gelatin hydrogel. The incorporation of PA endowed the hydrogel with an excellent conductivity of 5.8 S·cm−1. In addition, robust hydrogen bonding was formed between water and phytic acid molecules, and the hydrogel demonstrated remarkable anti-freezing and water retention. On this basis, hydrogels can be used for human winter sports sensing and low-temperature environmental alarm devices to provide faster rescue. This study provides a novel method for the development of hydrogels with low-temperature stability, and provides a revelation for the application of anti-freezing hydrogels in icy and snowy environments.

Most durability issues in cement-based materials stem from water intrusion, which can be mitigated by hydrophobic materials with excellent waterproofing properties. This study proposes a green wet chemical method using stearic acid (SA) and waste glass powder (WGP) to synthesize hydrophobic WGP (HWGP). The effect of SA dosage on the water contact angle of HWGP was investigated, and the optimal SA dosage for preparing HWGP was determined through TG analysis. XRD, FTIR, XPS, and TEM tests revealed the synthesis mechanism of HWGP. The effects of HWGP on mortar's mechanical properties, water and frost resistance were also studied, and the optimal dosage of HWGP for preparing hydrophobic mortar was determined. The results show that 8 % SA is optimal for preparing HWGP, and its water contact angle is 132.2°. The synthesis occurs through reactions between SA and Na + , Ca 2+ , and Si-OH groups, with the long carbon chains of SA grafted onto WGP, forming a hydrophobic layer about 4 nm thick. As HWGP content increases, compressive strength initially increases and then decreases, while water and frost resistance improve significantly. The optimal dosage for preparing hydrophobic mortar is 15 % HWGP, where compressive strength decreases by only 6.9 %, flexural strength increases by 12.5 %, and water contact angle increases by 91.2°. Additionally, initial and secondary water absorption rates decrease by 79.4 % and 92.2 %, respectively, total water absorption amount over 8d decreases by 64.9 %, and frost resistance improves by 70.9 %.

Flexible ionic conductive hydrogel is attracting significant interest as it could be one of the crucial components for multifunctional ionotronic devices. However, their features of inevitably drying out without package and freezing at subzero temperatures may greatly limit the applications of conventional hydrogels in specific situations. Here, we present an ionic conductive hydrogel with water retention and freezing tolerance that consists of silk fibroin, ionic liquid, water, and inorganic salt. It is discovered that the ionic liquid serves multiple purposes to prevent water evaporation, decrease the freezing point, provide the essential conductivity of the hydrogel, etc. As a binary mixed solvent, the ionic liquid/water mixture enhances both water retention and freezing tolerance of the hydrogel electrolyte. Based on the silk fibroin (SF)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMImAc)/H2O/KCl hydrogel electrolyte, the flexible fiberlike supercapacitor could still function well at a temperature as low as −50 °C and after being stored in the open air for a long time. It is anticipated that this hydrogel will prove useful in developing new applications operating under harsh environments.

Recently, flexible, injectable, and strain-sensitive hydrogels have attracted great research interest for application as electronic skin and wearable strain sensors. The synergistic integration of high flexibility, rapid self-healing, and antifreezing properties makes injectable, strain-sensitive, and self-healing guar gum hydrogels still a great challenge. Here, inspired by the strong hydrogen bonding of glycerol and water, the chelation cross-linking between glycerol and borax, we constructed a compact three-dimensional dynamic cross-linked net formed of glycerol–water–borax. Under stress, dynamic interactions of glycerol–water–borax net act as sacrificial bond energy for effective dissipation, which enables the hydrogel to achieve high flexibility, stretchability, and injectability. More importantly, because of the presence of glycerol, the antifreeze and moisturizing properties of the gel are improved. The hydrogel also exhibited an ultrafast self-healing ability of only 15 s. In addition, the results show that the hydrogel has self-adhesive properties and strain sensitivity. The hydrogels have the potential to be used to make flexible, wearable, and 3D-printable electronic skin and strain-sensitive sensors.

Forming natural polymers-based hydrogels with enhanced mechanical strength, outstanding antifreezing property and superior conductivity is still a challenge. Here, gelatin/oxidized dextran hydrogel is fabricated and it shows enhanced mechanical performance, antifreeze tolerance, and conductivity due to the synergistic interaction of ammonium sulfate and betaine. The resulting gelatin/oxidized dextran/(NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 /betaine hydrogel exhibits high stretchability (570%), tough tensile (2.49 MPa) and compressive (46.41 MPa) fracture strength, favorable tensile (6.05 MJ m −3 ) and compressive (3.08 MJ m −3 ) toughness, antifreezing property (−30 °C) and high conductivity (2.86 S m −1 ). Based on the above characteristics, the hydrogel is applied for strain sensor to monitor the joints motion of human body such as finger, wrist, elbow, knee, neck, and throat. The hydrogel can maintain good mechanical performance and stable sensing signal from 25 to −30 °C. Therefore, the designed hydrogel based on natural polymers shows a huge potential for tissue engineering and biosensing under the mild or extreme environment.

Flexible electronic devices with biological therapeutic and sensing properties are one of the current research directions. Here, a multifunctional hydrogel for stress sensing and wound healing was prepared by a simple one-pot method and a solution replacement method. Among them, zwitterionic polymers promote wound healing by promoting the polarization of M2 macrophages, collagen deposition, and blood vessel formation. Glycerin can significantly improve the resilience and frost resistance of the hydrogel, ensuring that a sensor made using the hydrogel can work normally in a cold environment. In addition, zwitterionic polymers are highly biocompatible, providing excellent antibacterial adhesion to aid the wound healing process, and good electrical conductivity enhances sensing sensitivity and stability. Based on these properties, multifunctional hydrogels could detect human vital activities while promoting wound healing, providing new ideas for the fields of diagnosis and wound dressing.

Conductive hydrogels have attracted increasing attention for applications in wearable and flexible strain sensors. However, owing to their relatively weak strength, poor elasticity, and lack of anti-freezing ability, their applications have been limited. Herein, we present a skin-mimicking strategy to fabricate cellulose-enhanced, strong, elastic, highly conductive, and anti-freezing hydrogels. Self-assembly of cellulose to fabricate a cellulose skeleton is essential for realizing a skin-mimicking design. Furthermore, two methods, in situ polymerization and solvent replacement, were compared and investigated to incorporate conductive and anti-freezing components into hydrogels. Consequently, when the same ratio of glycerol and lithium chloride was used, the anti-freezing hydrogels prepared by in situ polymerization showed relatively higher strength (1.0 MPa), while the solvent-replaced hydrogels exhibited higher elastic recovery properties (94.6 %) and conductivity (4.5 S/m). In addition, their potential as strain sensors for monitoring human behavior was analyzed. Both hydrogels produced reliable signals and exhibited high sensitivity. This study provides a new horizon for the fabrication of strain sensors that can be applied in various environments.

Conductive hydrogels with anti-freezing and moisturizing properties have attracted huge attention for application in flexible electronics, which can work stably in harsh environments. However, it is challenging and urgent to enhance the environmental adaptability of hydrogels, while maintaining high conductivity. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel featuring remarkable freezing resistance and moisture-holding ability is fabricated via incorporating phytic acid (PA) into polyacrylamide/chitosan hydrogels. The addition of PA not only endows the hydrogels with a marvelous conductivity of 0.105 S cm−1 due to the ionization of PA, but also promotes their antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria. Besides, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between PA and water molecules, the hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility and great conductivity (0.041 S cm−1) at −20 °C and could function well after storage for 15 days under ambient conditions. More importantly, the hydrogels can serve as reliable electrodes for electrocardiography (ECG) signal detection. Meanwhile, with the imperceptible strain perceivability (0.1% of strain) and a high gauge factor of 10.87, the hydrogel wearable sensors are capable of precisely monitoring and recognizing both drastic and subtle human motions under diverse working environments. This work provides a novel and promising method for developing flexible wearable electronics with environmental stability.

Intelligent and convenient human–computer interfaces realize efficient and close cooperation between people and the digital world. As windows of human–machine interaction (HMI), sensors directly determine the ability and quality of acquired signals and the utilization potential of HMI systems. However, it still remains challenging to develop antifreeze hydrogel sensors with freeze-resistant properties while avoiding the loss of other properties as much as possible to achieve stable HMI applications in low-temperature environments. Here, we present an Agar/PAAm dual-network hydrogel (Na + -Agar/PAAm-AFP) doped with both antifreeze protein (AFP) and sodium chloride (NaCl), which exhibits excellent antifreeze capability (−20 °C). The hydrogel integrates transparency (>90%), ultra stretchability (up to 2100%), good adhesion properties to metal, glass, and plastic, high electrical conductivity (3.41 S m −1 ), high sensitivity (GF = 10.23), and non-irritating to the skin. The hydrogel can be used for monitoring daily activities and glove-based HMI systems for intelligent control. In addition, based on this hydrogel, we have successfully developed an interactive system for real-time information transfer over long distances. It is expected to provide better health management monitoring in several fields and also help to advance the development of innovative and IoT technologies.

Conductive hydrogels are typically unable to function in cold environments because they freeze at subzero temperatures. A hydrogel based on an organic polyol or ionic liquids (ILs) may improve anti-freezing properties, but the integration of a single component can reduce long-term conductivity. Through the combination of glycerol and ILs in this research, we developed an anti-freeze-conducting hydrogel by leveraging the ability of glycerol to retain water and ILs' high electrical conductivity at low temperatures. As a result of the polyhydroxyl groups present in glycerol, it readily forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules, conferring excellent anti-freeze and water retention properties to the hydrogel. Even after being stored at −20 °C for 15 days, the hydrogel's mechanical properties and electrical conductivity remain stable. Further, by incorporating ILs into the polymer network backbone, the hydrogel achieves ultra-high conductivity sensitivity, retaining a gauge factor of 9.18 (or 96 %) after storage at −20 °C. Aside from its excellent adhesion and elongation characteristics, the hydrogel exhibits excellent characteristics that enable it to adhere firmly to surfaces as well as detect subtle deformations, such as the bending of a human joint, with ease. Due to its frost-resistant and sensitive properties, this organic ionic hydrogel can be utilized to design wearable sensors that are tailored for monitoring the health of individuals in sub-zero temperatures.

Freezing and dehydration together with interfacial failure are capable of causing the functional reduction of hydrogels for sensing applications. Herein, we develop a multifunctional bilayer that consists of a mussel-inspired adhesive layer and a functionally ionic layer that is composed of sodium p-styrene sulfonate (SSS) and an ionic liquid of [BMIM]Cl. The adhesive layer enables the strong adhesion of the bilayer to the surface of the skin. The introduction of ionic elements of SSS-[BMIM]Cl not only provides the bilayer with sensing adaptability in a wide temperature range of −25 to 75 °C, but also endows it with elastic, stretchable, self-healing, and conductive features. These mechanical properties are utilized to assemble a wearable sensor that has unprecedented sensitivity and reusability in monitoring human motions, including stretching, pulsing, frowning, and speaking. It is thus expected that the concept in this work would provide a promising route to design soft sensing devices that can work in a wide temperature range.

High-performance hydrogels with favorable mechanical strength, high modulus, sufficient ionic conductivity and freezing resistance have far-ranging applications in flexible electronic equipment. Nevertheless, it is challenging to combine admirable mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity into one hydrogel. Herein, a facile strategy was developed for the preparation of the hydrogel with excellent strength (1.45 MPa), super Young's modulus (8.85 MPa) and high conductivity (1.47 S/m) using starch and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as raw materials. The starch/PVA/Gly/Na 3 Cit (SPGN) gel was firstly cross-linked by crystalline regions of PVA upon freezing-thawing cycles. It was further immersed in the saturated Na 3 Cit solution to enhance the interaction between the substrates through the salting-out effect. The effect of soaking time on the crystallinity, intermolecular interactions, mechanical and electrical properties of SPGN gel was demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, tensile and impedance testing measurements. The introduction of glycerol and Na 3 Cit also endowed SPGN gels with favorable anti-freezing properties. The SPGN gel could maintain high mechanical flexibility and ionic conductivity at −15 °C.
