The development of elastic electronic technology has promoted the application of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in flexible wearable electronics. However, most of the flexible electronics cannot achieve the requirements of being extremely stretchable, transparent, and highly conductive at the same time. Herein, we report a TENG constructed using a double-network polymer ionic conductor sodium alginate/zinc sulfate/poly acrylic-acrylamide (SA–Zn) hydrogel, which exhibited outstanding stretchability (>10,000%), high transparency (>95%), and good conductivity (0.34 S·m–1). The SA–Zn hydrogel TENG (SH-TENG) could harvest energy from typical human movements, such as bending, stretching, and twisting, which could light up 234 green commercial LEDs easily. Additionally, the SH-TENG can be used to prepare a self-powered smart training band sensor for monitoring arm stretching motion. This work may provide an innovative platform for accessing the next generation of sustainable wearable and sports monitoring electronics.

The output power of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) strongly depends on the performance of triboelectric materials, especially microstructures and functional groups of them. In this work, aiming at the excellent triboelectric ability, alternate-layered MXene composite films-based TENG with abundant fluorine groups(-F) through layer-by-layer stacking are designed and fabricated. Benefitting from the uniform intrinsic microstructure and increased dielectric constant, when the amount of the Nb 2 CT x nanosheets increases to 15 wt%, the TENG based on Nb 2 CT x /Ti 3 C 2 T x composite nanosheets films achieves the maximum output. The short-circuit current density of 8.06 μA/cm 2 and voltage of 34.63 V are 8.4 times and 3.5 times over that of pure Ti 3 C 2 T x films, and 3.3 times and 4.3 times over that of commercial poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films, respectively. Furthermore, the fabricated TENG could be attached to human body to harvest energy from human motions, such as typing, texting, and hand clapping. The results demonstrate that the alternate-layered MXene composite nanosheet films through layer-by-layer stacking possess remarkably triboelectric performance, which broaden the choice of negative triboelectric materials and supply a new choice for high output TENG.

Among various emerging energy technologies, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered significant attention owing to their ability to convert environmental mechanical energy into electrical energy through the triboelectric effect and electrostatic induction. However, there are some problems with optimizing the electrical output and conversion efficiency of TENGs. This paper presents a high-performance TENG enhanced with BaTiO₃ nanowires(BTONWs) using electrospinning technology. PVDF was doped with BTONWs to fabricate TENGs with high flexibility and efficient energy conversion. BaTiO₃ and PVDF all exhibited inherent properties and triboelectric properties, maximizing the conversion of pressure into electrical energy output. This integration effectively enhances the conversion power and provides a continuous energy supply. Experimental results show that the fabricated TENGs achieved a current and voltage of 12 μA and 280 V, respectively, with a maximum power density of 1.45 W/m 2 at a load resistance of 90 MΩ. In addition, the performance of the TENGs was tested using a calculator, timer, and LED lights. By connecting to a simple external circuit and continuously tapping the TENG, the devices functioned normally, demonstrating that the TENG can constantly and stably output electrical energy by continuously collecting mechanical energy to power microgenerators. This work may significantly contribute to developing energy harvesting, wearable devices, and micropower sources.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted global attention for energy conversion from various types of mechanical energy into electricity. Traditional approaches for improving triboelectric conversion efficiency generally involved complicated preparation methods and strict structural design, which cannot fulfill the stringent requirements of material adaptability and application scenarios. In this work, a flexible TENG was developed based on zirconium-doped barium titanate (BaZr x Ti 1−x O 3 , BZT) particles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. Subsequently, BZT/PDMS composites with patterned structures were fabricated by direct ink writing (DIW) based three-dimensional (3D) printing to significantly enhance the electrical performance. It was demonstrated that the TENG could deliver a maximum open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 350 V and a short-circuit current (I SC ) of 4.9 µA with a maximum power density of 2.4 W m −2 . Moreover, an effective utilization of the TENG was designed to detect the presence of humans, saving a huge amount of electrical energy. Finally, a TENG-based tactile sensor was integrated with machine learning to construct a material identification system, which was capable of recognizing different materials with a high accuracy of 98.54 %. The TENG-based tactile sensor with machine learning demonstrated a tremendous application in material perception, promoting the development of versatile sensors in the field of machine intelligence.

CsPbBr 3 perovskite has become a star material for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) due to its excellent optoelectronic properties, dielectric properties and stability in the atmosphere. However, regulating its optoelectronic and dielectric properties through charge-directed transport and separation within TENGs has not been comprehensively explored. Herein, p-n junction is constructed to form built-in potential ( E built-in ) for charge-directed transport by introducing a semiconductor layer beneath the perovskite film in perovskite-TENGs, where the effect of E built-in ’s direction and intensity on output performance is systematically investigated. Introducing the p-type semiconductor NiO x creates a reversed E built-in , which enhances the surface triboelectric charge density of the perovskite and achieves improved triboelectric output performance of 205 V and 43 μA cm −2 for the PVDF-CsPbBr 3 TENG. Conversely, the n-type semiconductor SnO 2 establishes a parallel E built-in , greatly facilitating the extraction and separation of photogenerated carriers, leading to a high current density of 1.4 mA cm −2 under illumination based on the triboelectric-photoelectric coupling effect. Moreover, the CsPbBr 3 -TENGs demonstrate superior stability and a broad linear response range and fast photoresponsivity, proving their potential for practical applications in various self-powered optoelectronic detection devices.

The clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus typically depends on blood glucose measurements. Many laboratory studies have focused on enzyme–electrode biosensors that require an external power source. In this study, the potential of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as self-driven sensors for glucose detection is investigated by utilizing the glucose specificity of glucose oxidase. When immersed in glucose solutions with concentrations ranging from 3.9 to 13.1 mmol L −1 , the TENGs exhibit a linear relationship between the glucose concentration and current and voltage changes. These findings suggest that the TENGs developed in this study can effectively function as glucose sensors, providing a foundation for future human blood glucose monitoring applications and demonstrating a promising new approach for biomedical sensor technology.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are eco-friendly energy harvesters. Polyimide (PI) has been widely used as a triboelectric layer in TENGs, but the relationship between its structure and performance is not fully understood. Herein, PI films with varying molecular structures were prepared to investigate the effects of -O- and –CF 3 groups on their physical properties and triboelectric performance. The results showed that PI films with -O- exhibited better thermal stability, while both -O- and –CF 3 groups effectively modulated optical transparency and dielectric properties. At 450 nm, M6-PI and O6-PI exhibited the highest transmittance at 63.14 % and 55.06 %, respectively, with dielectric loss performance below 0.5 % at 10 5 Hz. PI films incorporating -O- and –CF 3 demonstrated significant improvements in triboelectric performance. Theoretical calculations clarified these groups influence optical transparency, dielectric properties, and electrical output performance. Ultimately, the fabricated 6PI-TENG achieved the desired triboelectric performance with enhanced electrical output. The V oc and Q sc of 6PI reached approximately 80 V and 25 nC, respectively. This study offers essential theoretical insights for designing and advancing of TENGs, contributing to sustainable energy development.

Moisture in environment can severely decrease the output of the solid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) which usually hinders their further practical applications. To solve this problem, in this paper we fabricated a new type of biofilm materials based TENG, which can work stably in high humidity environment with high output performance by forming hydrogen bond with water molecules. In high humidity environment the hydroxyl-rich biomaterials, such as starch molecules, and water molecules could form hydrogen bonds spontaneously to fix water molecules on the surface, which allows water molecules to participate in triboelectric charging as a more electropositive material to obtain a higher output of TENG. Different from the traditional polymer materials based TENGs, the output of the starch films based TENG increases with the increase of the environmental humidity. The output current and voltage could increase from 6.2 μA to 110 V to 16.6 μA and 330 V with the ambient humidity increasing from 15% to 95%, respectively, which is about 12 times larger than that of the traditional nylon-11 based TENG in the humidity of 95%. It is an important supplement of TENG family and highly expand application scopes for energy harvesting and self-powered sensors in high humidity environment, especially in cloudy, foggy days or under water and sweat conditions.

MXene-composited conductive hydrogels have received extensive attention in flexible, portable and self-powered wearable electronics based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Yet, the incompatibility of the MXene with hydrogel matrix due to easy oxidation and weak interactions with polymer chains weakens the performance of hydrogels. Herein, inspired by the structure of leaves, tannic acid (TA) with abundant catechol groups was introduced to encapsulate MXene and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) was intercalated to support the MXene nanosheets as leaf vein, forming a stable TOCNF/TA@MXene nano-motif with three-dimensional (3D) network. Benefiting from the addition of TOCNF, TOCNF/TA@MXene exhibited long-term stability (>10 days) in aqueous environment with the presence of oxidant. Therefore, the obtained TOCNF/TA@MXene-composited hydrogel (PCM) exhibited high stretchability (>800 %), reliable fatigue resistance and good adhesiveness, which can be served as electrodes of flexible TENGs. The formed PCM-TENG demonstrated flexibility and versatility, achieving an open-circuit voltage of 106 V, a short-circuit current of ~2 μA and a transfer charge of ~31 nC even in a single-electrode mode. Besides, PCM-TENG showed enduring practicality and responsiveness as a self-powered sensor to detect human biomotions. PCM-TENG also presented desirable photothermal antibacterial capacity and cytocompatibility. All these properties endowed the PCM-TENG with great application potential in human healthcare.

Flammability is a great challenge in the fields of electronics. The emergence of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) provides a safe way to harvest environmentalally friendly energy and convert it into more secure power sources. Especially, polymer-based TENGs significantly accelerate the practical application of self-powered flexible electronics. However, most of the existing polymeric materials for TENGs are easily flammable and melt, dripping, in a fire scenario, and cannot be reused after combustion, which greatly limits the application of TENGs under extreme conditions. Herein, a fire-resistant TENG based on all-aromatic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ester) (LCP AEE ) synthesized via simple and efficient one-pot melt polycondensation is reported. The highly rigid main chain of LCP AEE endows the LCP-TENG with outstanding anti-dripping, temperature- and fire-resistance. The resultant LCP-TENG exhibits excellent electrical output performance, which is attributed to the high dielectric constant (ε′ = 4.8) and fibrous-structured morphology of LCP AEE . The device can maintain over 65% of open-circuit voltage even after 16 s combustion (≈520 °C). Consequently, this work offers a novel strategy for tailoring the TENGs toward a secure power generator and electronics with fire hazard reduction, and potential application in firefighting, personal protection, and other extreme temperature environments.

The capability of healing structural damage is highly desired for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which are subject to repeated mechanical loading. However, it remains difficult to balance the intrinsic mechanical strength and healing capability of the materials used in TENGs. Herein, we exploit a mechanically strong and mildly healable polymer (THP) as the key material of TENGs. THP is based on polyurethane–urea containing coordinate bonds, and its healing can be triggered by simply wetting the breakage area with water or alcoholic drinks. The healing ratio and the tensile strength of THP can reach ∼90% and ∼11.6 MPa, respectively. Correspondingly, the prepared THP-based TENGs (THP-TENGs) exhibit high enough robustness to withstand mechanical loading as well as excellent healability for recovering device functionalities after mechanical damage. In addition, disused devices can be recycled to produce new ones based on the solution processibility of THP. The fabricated THP-TENG could serve as a mechanical energy harvester as well as a self-powered sensor for detecting tactile and electrophysiological signals, suggesting utilities in advanced wearable systems.

Cellulose and its derivatives are biopolymers abundant in nature, with the advantages of low cost, biodegradability, and high positive friction polarity. In this paper, a novel friction positive layer material sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-epichlorohydrin (ECH)-polyethyleneimine (PEI) aerogel (CEP aerogel) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film are reported as a friction pair to prepare high-performance CEP aerogel based triboelectric nanogenerator (CEP-TENG) for mechanical energy harvesting and sensing fields. The systematic optimization of the preparation process of CEP aerogel to improve its friction positive polarity not only expands the field of friction positive layer materials but also facilitates its better application to TENG with excellent output performance. The corresponding CEP-TENG can produce open-circuit voltage of 203 V, short-current density of 8.2 µA/cm 2 , and a power density of 3.38 W/m 2 under the applied force of 15 N and frequency of 4 Hz, which is 13.5 times and 27.3 times higher than that of CMC aerogel and 0.03 mm PTFE film. In addition, CEP aerogel-based TENGs have been proven to be effective in powering electronic devices by charging commercial capacitors and detecting human motion such as finger tapping and arm bends. Therefore, the investigation demonstrates the feasibility of CEP aerogel as a friction layer material, thus providing insights to promote low cost-effective and environmentally friendly TENG development.
