Flexible strain sensors are promising candidates for intelligent wearable devices. Among previous studies, although crack-based sensors have attracted a lot of attention due to their ultrahigh sensitivity, large strain usually causes fractures in the conductive paths. Because of the unstable crack structure, the tradeoff between sensitivity and workable strain range is still a challenge. As carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) can form a strong interface with the thermoplastic substrate and strengthen the conductive network by capillary force during water evaporation, CNTs and AgNWs were deposited on electrospun TPU fiber mats via vacuum-assisted filtration in this work. The prestretching treatment constructed a microcrack structure that endowed the sensor with the combined characteristics of a wide working range (0~171% strain), ultrahigh sensitivity (a gauge factor of 691 within 0~102% strain, ~2 × 10 4 within 102~135% strain, and > 11 × 10 4 within 135~171% strain), a fast response time (~65 ms), small hysteresis, and superior durability ( > 2000 cycles). Subsequently, the sensing mechanism of the sensor was studied. Distributed microcrack propagation based on the “island-bridge” structure was explained in detail, and its influence on the strain-sensing behavior of the sensor was analyzed. Finally, the sensor was assembled to monitor various vibration signals and human motions, demonstrating its potential applications in the fields of electronic skin and human health monitoring.

A flexible wearable temperature sensor is a novel electronic sensor that can monitor real-time changes in human body temperature in a variety of application scenarios and is regarded as the “crown jewel” of information collection technology. Although flexible strain sensors based on hydrogels have excellent self-healing effects and mechanical durability, their widespread application is still limited by external power sources. Herein, a novel self-energizing hydrogel was developed by embellishing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The resultant thermoelectrically conductive CNC was then employed as a booster for poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/borax hydrogels. The obtained hydrogels exhibit remarkable self-healing performance (92.57%) and exceptional stretchability (989.60%). Additionally, the hydrogel was capable of accurately and reliably identifying human motion. Most importantly, it exhibits excellent thermoelectric performance, capable of generating stable and reproducible voltages. It shows a large Seebeck coefficient of 1.31 mV k–1 at ambient temperatures. When subjected to a temperature difference of 25 K, the output voltage reaches 31.72 mV. CNC-PEDOT:PSS/PVA conductive hydrogel is multifunctional with self-healing, self-powering, and temperature sensing, which has the potential to be used for the preparation of intelligent wearable temperature-sensing devices.

With the rapid development of intelligent electronic technology, there have been increasing interests and demands of wearable sensors. In this emerging field, some issues of sensing materials are still need to be well-addressed, such as inadequate flexibility, poor biocompatibility, and delamination of conductive components, etc. In this study, a composite ion-conductive hydrogel with incorporated hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) was prepared. This composite hydrogel maintains excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits zero crosstalk good humidity sensing as well as temperature responsiveness, and effectively avoid signal crosstalk. The hydrogel can accurately detect environmental humidity changes and real-world scenarios like oral respiration through variations in current. Additionally, it can respond to external temperature changes through transparency alterations, while retaining the strain-sensing capabilities of conductive hydrogels, enabling self-adhesive stress–strain sensing. Notably, HPC forms a network structure within the hydrogel system, leveraging its hydrophilic surface groups to enhance the humidity sensing performances. This research explores the structural distribution of HPC within the hydrogel system, offering a novel strategy for the development of HPC-added hydrogel sensors, which hold significant potentials for applications in flexible wearable devices.

Wearable sensors with high sensitivity, fast response and recovery are highly desirable for many new application fields. Herein, we synthesized the cotton fiber which coated with reduced graphene oxide doped with silver nanowire (rGO-Ag NW@cotton fiber) via a simple and environmentally friendly hydrothermal method . The flexible and wearable rGO-Ag NW@cotton fiber based piezoresistive sensor was fabricated with the orientation of face-to-face, where the cotton fiber coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO@cotton fiber) was used as the lower part of the sensor. The addition of silver nanowire (Ag NW) provides a faster and more convenient channel for charge transfer, resulting in the greatly improvement of the performance, showing the high sensitivity, accompanied with the fast response and relaxation properties. With the effectively wrapping and protection of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), Ag NW was well protected and avoid being oxidized by the air, which contributes significantly to the excellent stability of the sensor. Under the synergistic effect of Ag NW and rGO, rGO-Ag NW@cotton fiber based piezoresistive sensor can be well used in detecting human activities such as finger pressing, bending, twisting, walking and pulse waves, showing high sensitivity, fast response, fast recovery and high stability. These results indicate that the rGO-Ag NW@cotton fiber based piezoresistive sensor has an enormous potential for application in the flexible and wearable pressure sensors.

Photocurable gels have broad application prospects in biomedicine, bionics, flexible wearable devices and other fields. However, there are still some problems in the current photocurable gels, such as notch sensitivity, that is, poor tear resistance. In this study, we provided a photocurable gel with excellent tear resistance. The gel prepolymer is mainly composed of hydroxymethylacrylamide (NAM) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) modified with dopamine hydrochloride (DA), referred to as DA@CNC. After photocuring, the prepared gels show excellent mechanical properties such as tear resistance, elasticity and toughness. The introduction of DA@CNC not only endows gels with a large amount of energy dissipation through hydrogen bond crosslinking, but also effectively resists crack expansion as a nano-sized reinforcing phase, which greatly improves the tear resistance of the gels. Even at a 40 % gap, the elongation at break of the gel can still reach 1445 %. In addition, the DA can endow the gel with good electrical conductivity and excellent sensitivity (GF = 23.8). Some flexible wearable devices like finger sleeve and wristband can be customized by photocurable 3D printing using the gel with high toughness. This high-performance gel has great application potential in flexible wearable devices.

The desire for healthy living has created a crucial need for portable flexible health-monitoring devices based on biomaterials. Toward this end, we report a microsphere-structured hydrogel that uses bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a dielectric layer for capacitive pressure sensors. We developed a theoretical model that describes how stacking dielectric layers of spheres affects the performance of capacitive sensors. We also prepared a prototype sensor featuring the unique microsphere structure to create capacitive sensors with high sensitivity (360.91 strain sensitivity), excellent cyclical stability, and a long service life (over 5000 stretching–compression cycles). Furthermore, the design of the hydrogel sensor allows for easy integration into fabrics to create devices such as smart wristbands, which can collect a diverse range of health data. Thus, BSA-hydrogel-based sensors not only provide safe wearable devices but also advance the performance of high-sensitivity capacitive sensors.

To achieve adhesive and conformable wearable electronics, improving stretchable transparent electrode (STE) becomes an indispensable bottleneck needed to be addressed. Here, we adopt a nonuniform Young’s modulus structure with silver nanowire (AgNW) and fabricate a STE layer. This layer possesses transparency of >88% over a wide spectrum range of 400–1000 nm, sheet resistance below 20 Ω sq −1 , stretchability of up to 100%, enhanced mechanical robustness, low surface roughness, and good interfacial wettability for solution process. As a result of all these properties, the STE enables the fabrication of a highly efficient ultraflexible wearable device comprising of both organic photovoltaic (OPV) and organic photodetector (OPD) parts with high mechanical durability and conformability, for energy-harvesting and biomedical-sensing applications, respectively. This demonstrates the great potential of the integration of OPVs and OPDs, capable of harvesting energy independently for biomedical applications, paving the way to a future of independent conformable wearable OPV/OPDs for different applications.

As a flexible wearable device, hydrogel-based sensors have attracted widespread attention in soft electronics. However, the application of traditional hydrogels at extreme temperatures or for a long-term stability still remain a challenge because of the existence of water. Herein, we reported an antifreezing and antidrying organohydrogel with high transparency (over 85% transmittance), high stretchability (up to 1200%), and robust adhesiveness to various substrates, which consist of polyacrylic acid, gelatin, AlCl3+, and tannic acid in a water/glycerin binary solvent as the dispersion medium. As the binary solvent easily forms strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules, organohydrogels exhibited excellent tolerance for drying and freezing. The organohydrogels maintained conductivity, adhesion, and stable sensitivity after a long-term storage or at subzero temperature (−14 °C). Moreover, the organohydrogel-based wearable sensors with a gauge factor of 2.5 (strain, 0–100%) could detect both large-scale movements and subtle motions. Therefore, the multifunctional organohydrogel-wearable sensors with antifreezing and antidrying properties have promising potential for human–machine interfaces and healthcare monitoring under a broad range of environmental conditions.

Microwave sensors based on microstrip antennas are promising as wearable devices because of their flexibility and wireless communication compatibility. However, their sensitivity is limited due to the reduced sensor size and the potential of biochemical monitoring needs to be explored. In this work, we present a new concept to enhance the microwave signals using nanostrip-based metamaterials. The introduction of the nanostrip structures was achieved by theory and simulations. Experiments prove their enhancement of the electric field and sensing response in the characteristic gigahertz (GHz) wave band. Ordered nanostrips were fabricated on a plastic substrate through a simple nanoscale printing approach. Glucose oxidase is directly doped into the nanostrips, which enables a flexible wearable enzymatic biosensor for glucose sensing. Sensing experiments demonstrated that the nanostrip biosensor gives excellent performance for glucose detection, including high sensitivity, fast response, low detection limit, high affinity, and low power consumption. The applicability of the nanostrip-based sensor as a wearable epidermal device for real-time noninvasive monitoring of glucose in sweat is verified as well.

In this work, a wearable and flexible three-electrode electrochemical sensing system (TESS) by using a two-in-one enzyme-mimic working electrode (TIOWE) is reported. The integrated three-electrode, including working electrodes, reference electrodes, and counter electrodes are formed by transfer printing of Ni 2 P-based composite electrode ink (Ni 2 P/G ink), Ag/AgCl ink, and carbon ink onto PDMS substrate, respectively. The Ni 2 P/G ink-based working electrodes have both good conductivity and enzyme-mimic catalytic activity towards glucose. Under optimized conditions, the TIOWE-TESS has a low detection limit of 0.37 μM and wide linear ranges of 0.001 mM–0.1 mM and 0.1 mM–1.4 mM. Furthermore, the TIOWE-TESS has good applicability in serum samples and reveals remarkable electrochemical performance at fluctuant working temperatures. The proposed TIOWE-TESS can be integrated on a waterproof bandage to fabricate a skin-friendly patch device for sweet glucose monitoring, which highlights its potential applications in flexible and wearable commercial devices for health-monitoring.

Designing flexible wearable sensors with a wide sensing range, high sensitivity, and high stability is a vulnerable research direction with a futuristic field to study. In this paper, Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/polysulfone (PSF) composite films with excellent sensor performance were obtained by self-assembly of conductive fillers in TPU/PSF porous films with an asymmetric structure through vacuum filtration, and the porous films were prepared by the phase inversion method. The composite films consist of the upper part with finger-like “cavities” filled by MXene/CNTs, which reduces the microcracks in the conductive network during the tensile process, and the lower part has smaller apertures of a relatively dense resin cortex assisting the recovery process. The exclusive layer structure of the MXene/CNTs/TPU/PSF film sensor, with a thickness of 46.95 μm, contains 0.0339 mg/cm2 single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and 0.348 mg/cm2 MXene only, providing functional range (0–80.7%), high sensitivity (up to 1265.18), and excellent stability and durability (stable sensing under 2300 fatigue tests, viable to the initial resistance), endurably cycled under large strains with serious damage to the conductive network. Finally, the MXene/CNTs/TPU/PSF film sensor is usable for monitoring pulse, swallow, tiptoe, and various joint bends in real time and distributing effective electrical signals. This paper implies that the MXene/CNTs/TPU/PSF film sensor has broad prospects in pragmatic applications.

Developing comfortable, protective, and reliable monitoring wearable devices is of great significance for next-generation electronic devices. However, previously reported fabrics have proven inadequate for cross-mechanism sensing integration and electromagnetic wave (EMW) protection. To address these, an electromagnetic wave-absorbing flexible wearable device with multimodal sensing capabilities is fabricated based on cotton fabric through polypyrrole (PPy) in situ growth as well as dip-coating with polyaniline hollow microspheres (PHMs) and amino silane modified polyurethane. It demonstrates excellent electromagnetic wave-absorbing properties (Reflection loss peak: −48.20 dB, Effective absorption bandwidth:4.2 GHz). Remarkably, three sensing units have been all integrated by a multimodal sensing principle (strain, temperature, and triboelectric nanogenerator) in an all-in-one structural configuration. The motion sensing unit shows quick response (225 ms) and recovery (285 ms) times with high sensitivity (Gage factor ≈9.2). The temperature sensing unit has a sensitivity of 0.59% K −1 . The self-powered tactile sensing unit exhibits high output voltage (41 V), maximum instantaneous power density (1.9 W m −2 ), and detects touching incentive within 0.3 s. Smart human–machine interaction is demonstrated in applications like morse code, temperature, and touching detection. This study serves as a proof-of-concept for new smart textiles, showcasing potential for integrated flexible wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interactions.
