PVDF-Modified TiO2 Nanowires Membrane with Underliquid Dual Superlyophobic Property for Switchable Separation of Oil–Water Emulsions

Yutang Kang,Shihui Jiao,Boran Wang,Xinyan Lv,Wenwen Wang,Wen Yin,Zhenwei Zhang,Qi zhang,Yumei Tan,Guangsheng Pang

Separation membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity have recently caused widespread concern due to their switchable separation of oil–water mixtures and emulsions. However, the fabrication of the reported underliquid dual superlyophobic membranes is difficult, and the design of the underliquid dual superlyophobic surface of these membranes is challenging because of their complex surface composition. Theoretically, underliquid dual superlyophobicity is an underliquid Cassie state attainable by the synergy of the underliquid dual lyophobic surface and the construction of a high-roughness surface. Herein, we fabricated an underliquid dual superlyophobic membrane by combining underliquid dual lyophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and TiO2 nanowires. PVDF-modified TiO2 nanowire membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity were prepared via a simple adsorption and filtration approach. PVDF was coated onto TiO2 nanowires to form a PVDF layer with a thickness of 6 nm. The PVDF modification provided flexibility to the fragile TiO2 nanowires membrane and changed its wettability from underwater superoleophobicity/underoil superhydrophilicity to underliquid dual superlyophobicity. The PVDF-modified TiO2 nanowires membrane efficiently separated both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The binary cooperative effect between the TiO2 nanowires and the coated PVDF layer was responsible for the underliquid dual superlyophobicity.

Robust antifouling Poly(ionic liquid)s membrane with cyclodextrin skeleton for separation of oil/water emulsions

Liyuan Fan,Shaobin Wen,Bin Peng,Mengshi Chen,Yanqiu Wang,Qiang Zhang

Membrane fouling remains a persistent and arduous challenge in the industrial treatment of different surfactants-stabilized oily wastewater. Constructing a robust antifouling and sustainable hydration coating on the membrane surface to efficiently repel oils or surfactants is a critical requirement. Herein, cyclodextrin-based poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) coatings are cross-linked via the co-deposition on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) of quaternized heptkis(6-deoxy-6-vinylimidazolium)-β-cyclodextrin (CD-Vi) derivatives as skeleton and acrylic acid (AA) monomers, and following one-step free radical photopolymerization. Combining with the strong hydration of the CD-based PILs coating, the resultant membrane exhibits fabulous superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, oil repulsion, and self-cleaning capability. It demonstrates robust mechanical durability and chemical stability in harsh environments without losing its superhydrophilicity. Besides, the PIL-CD/AA coating can separate various surfactant-free and different surfactants (cationic CTAB, anionic SDS, and nonionic TWEEN 80) stabilized oil / water emulsions. During the long-term cycle operations, it also realizes stable recyclability with a series of permeation fluxes as high as removal efficiencies (>99.6 %) after 20 cycles for surfactant-free cyclohexane-in-water emulsion and 10 cycles for CTAB-stabilized isooctane-in-water emulsion.

The gradient superhydrophobic ZnO@PVDF nanofiber membrane with high-flux and anti-fouling for water-in-oil emulsion separation

Tiandi Pan,Zhibo Huang,Jianquan Zhang,Ning Tang,Ermiao Wu,Peijian Du,Youna Liu,Xiaofei Liu

Nanofiber membranes are widely used to separate water-in-oil emulsions. However, the membrane fouling from surfactant absorption reduces the permeation flux, while pressure-driven induces nanofiber slippage due to weak inter-fiber adhesion, leading to pore enlargement and a reduction in separation efficiency. To address these problems, this study developed gradient structure nanofiber composite membrane by in-situ growth ZnO nanowires on PVDF nanofibers through hydrothermal synthesis and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The introduction of ZnO nanowires increases the surface roughness, endowing the membrane with superhydrophobicity, thus excellent the anti-fouling properties. Additionally, by virtue of the gradient growth ZnO nanowires, the pore size of membrane showed a trend from small to large. The top layer with small pore could efficiently collect micro-sized water droplets from the emulsions. The bottom PVDF nanofibers possessed large pore and high porosity, ensuring high permeation flux. As a result, the optimized membrane achieved a separation efficiency of 99.2 %, permeation flux of up to 7554 L m −2 h −1 for water-in-xylene emulsion under the driving pressure of 20 kPa. Besides, the obtained membrane exhibited favorable reusability with efficiency 91.1 % for water-in-diesel emulsion after 10 cycles. The work provides a way to construct gradient structured membrane for high efficiency and rapid water removal from oil products.

A lignin-wood Janus membrane with three-dimensional interconnected layered micro/nano channels for on-demand separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions

Yifan Liu,Yufeng Miao,Zhuo Huang,Runxuan Wang,Yunyan Peng,Xiaolong Fang,Wenbo Che,Youming Yu

Oil/water emulsion wastewater is a typical industrial and domestic wastewater that is harmful to human health and the environment. However, it is still challenging to fabricate membrane materials for separating complex surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions from biomass in a facile and sustainable approach. Herein, paper industry waste lignin was prepared by self-assembly and hydrophobization into modified lignin nanospheres, which were sprayed onto delignified wood to develop a lignin-wood Janus membrane with superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces. The prepared Janus wood (JW) membrane maintains its selective wettability even under harsh conditions, demonstrating excellent durability and stability. Moreover, it can efficiently separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions on demand, with a separation efficiency of >99 %. It is due to the distinct wettability and hierarchical structure of JW membranes, which feature three-dimensional interconnected layered micro/nano channels (tracheids and vessels) that enable multiple and continuous separation of oil/water emulsions. In addition, the JW membrane maintains a stable and efficient oil/water emulsion separation efficiency after 10 cycles, which offers an efficient, cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable approach for applications of all-wood-based separators in the oily wastewater treatment field.

Biomimetic and Superwettable Nanofibrous Skins for Highly Efficient Separation of Oil-in-Water Emulsions

Jianlong Ge,Dingding Zong,Qing Jin,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Developing a feasible and efficient separation membrane for the purification of highly emulsified oily wastewater is of significance but challenging due to the critical limitations of low flux and serious membrane fouling. Herein, a biomimetic and superwettable nanofibrous skin on an electrospun fibrous membrane via a facile strategy of synchronous electrospraying and electrospinning is created. The obtained nanofibrous skin possesses a lotus-leaf-like micro/nanostructured surface with intriguing superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, which are due to the synergistic effect of the hierarchical roughness and hydrophilic polymeric matrix. The ultrathin, high porosity, sub-micrometer porous skin layer results in the composite nanofibrous membranes exhibiting superior performances for separating both highly emulsified surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. An ultrahigh permeation flux of up to 5152 L m −2 h −1 with a separation efficiency of >99.93% is obtained solely under the driving of gravity (≈1 kPa), which was one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional filtration membranes with similar separation properties, showing significant applicability for energy-saving filtration. Moreover, with the advantage of an excellent antioil fouling property, the membrane exhibits robust reusability for long-term separation, which is promising for large-scale oily wastewater remediation.

Cao Jiang-Yong-Quan,Chen Si-Chong,Zhang Jie,Xie Yang-Yang,Wang Yu-Zhong

Due to the important role of oil source in our life, the separation of water-in-oil emulsion is urgent and necessary. Membrane seperation technology has been an efficient and widely used method in separating oil-water separation. Herein, we report a versatile approach to fabricate surface carbonized membranes with self-standing property from biomass-derived precursor by synergistic charring of phytic acid, arginine and filter paper. The obtained membrane exhibited superhydrophobicity in oil, excellent fouling resistance, and self-supporting ability. The membrane can be cycle-used at least 12 times with high permeation flux (up to 1380 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and separation efficiency (up to 99.4%).

Facile hydrophilic modification of PVDF membrane with Ag/EGCG decorated micro/nanostructural surface for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation

Na Zhang,Na Yang,Luhong Zhang,Bin Jiang,Yongli Sun,Jingwen Ma,Kai Cheng,Feifei Peng

Wettability of porous materials is crucial for the separation of emulsified oil/water mixtures. Herein, high hydrophobicity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane has been facilely transformed to high hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity via single-step coating of plant-derived epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and silver ion (Ag + ) in aqueous solution. EGCG can chelate with Ag + and in-situ reduced it into Ag nanoparticle, meanwhile Ag/EGCG composite was adhered on membrane surface due to the high surface binding affinity of EGCG. The hydrophilic EGCG and formed micro/nanostructure together improved membrane hydrophilicity and oleophobicity. The optimally Ag/EGCG modified PVDF membrane possesses high permeate flux (e.g. 735 L/(m 2 h) for diesel-in-water emulsion, while it is zero for pristine PVDF membrane) under a low operation pressure of 0.5 bar and high oil rejections in the treatment of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions consisting of micro/nano scale droplets. In addition, the membrane exhibits excellent antifouling property with a flux recovery ratio of 98.1% and satisfactory reusability in a 5-cycle test. Moreover, the membrane possessed desired stability during long-term rinsing test and Ag leaching test. This work would offer new insights into surface hydrophilic manipulation of porous membrane towards practical oil emulsion purification.

In situ mussel-inspired Janus membranes using catechol and polyethyleneimine as the additives for highly efficient oil/water emulsions separation

Hou-Ying Ma,Yi-Ning Hu,Hao Yang,Li-Jing Zhu,Gang Wang,Zhi-Xiang Zeng,Ling-Hui Wang

Janus membranes (JMs) with asymmetrical wettability have been fabricated by (co)deposition of dopamine and its catechol derivatives on the hydrophobic substrates for oil/water emulsions separation, while it remains to be desired to simplify the preparation processes. Here, poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes using catechol and polyethyleneimine as the additives were fabricated by non-solvent phase inversion on the non-woven fabric. Hydrophilic polycatechol and polyethyleneimine (PCCh-PEI) aggregates migrated on the top side of the fabricated membranes, improving their hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the hydrophobic back surface with irregular nano/micropores and lots of PVDF spherulites was gained after peeling off the supporting fabric. As a result, the as-prepared Janus membranes showed excellent emulsion separation, stability, and durability, which can potentially be used for unidirectional liquid collection with lossless transportation. This work opens a new and facile way for the fabrication of JMs with asymmetric wettability toward the versatile separation of oil/water emulsions.

Difunctional MOF-EDTA modified wood membrane for efficient water purification

Bo Yue,Zhongwei Pang,Yang Yu,Jianfei Wu,Jiafu Qu,Jundie Hu,Dan Tian,Jianzhang Li,Yahui Cai

The environmental pollution caused by the discharge of oily wastewater and printing and dyeing wastewater is becoming more and more serious. Therefore, it is necessary to find an efficient method to separate oil/water emulsions and remove organic dyes from water simultaneously. However, the traditional separation membranes are usually very expensive and easy polluting the environment. Therefore, how to prepare high-efficiency separation membrane from low-cost, green renewable materials remains a huge challenge. In this study, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) modified metal–organic framework (MOF-808) nanoparticles were introduced into the wood substrate to construct a 3D wood/MOF-808-EDTA membrane with efficient water purification performance (oil/water emulsion separation and organic dye removal). Due to the introduction of hydrophilic MOF-808-EDTA nanoparticles, this novel membrane can effectively separate stable oil-in-water emulsions and remove organic dyes from water. The prepared wood/MOF-808-EDTA membrane has a high separation efficiency (more than 99.9 %) and permeation flux (1698 ± 15.85 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). The removal efficiency of organic dyes is more than 94 % with the permeation flux 1360 ± 2.54 L·m −2 ·h −1 . More importantly, the separation efficiency (oil/water emulsion) remained above 99.9 % and the dye removal efficiency was still above 90 % after 10 cycles. Additionally, the wood/MOF-808-EDTA membrane also has good mechanical/chemical stability and anti-fouling properties. This work opens a new approach for the development of functional biomass material membranes for sewage purification.

Enhancing oil/water emulsion separation with inkjet printed beetle-inspired zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 modified membranes

Xinyu Hu,Hongli Xie,Hao Wang,Liguo Shen,Renjie Li,Hongjun Lin,Leihong Zhao,Genying Yu

Efficient oil/water emulsion separation remains a critical challenge in industrial wastewater treatment due to the stability of emulsified oil droplets and the complexity of traditional membrane modification techniques. This study introduced a novel approach by employing a green, convenient, and controllable inkjet printing technique to fabricate a new inversely beetle-inspired hydrophobic zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) nanoparticle-modified tannic acid (TA)‑titanium (IV) bilayer structure on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. The resulting PVDF/TA-Ti(IV)/ZIF-67 membrane significantly enhanced the separation efficiency of oil/water emulsions. The TA-Ti(IV) layer not only enhanced the adhesion and uniform distribution of ZIF-67 but also minimized reagent consumption, simplifying the fabrication process. The hydrophobic ZIF-67 particles on the membrane served as localized active sites, facilitating the coalescence of small oil droplets within the emulsion, thus achieving effective demulsification and transforming stable oil-water emulsions into easily separable, unstable emulsions. This innovative membrane demonstrated optimal flux and rejection rates in oil/water emulsion separation. Its water flux exceeded 311.0 L·m −2 ·h −1 in gasoline, diesel, and soybean oil emulsions, approximately 5.5 times that of the unmodified PVDF membrane, while maintaining an oil rejection rate of over 99.6 %. Remarkably, the PVDF/TA-Ti(IV)/ZIF-67 membrane retained over 99 % separation efficiency after six filtration cycles, underscoring its exceptional antifouling performance and long-term operational stability. The innovative membrane developed in this study offers a cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally sustainable solution for large-scale oil/water emulsion treatment. Its bio-inspired wetting structure significantly enhances flux, oil rejection, and antifouling capabilities, marking a major advancement in industrial water treatment applications.

PAN/PVA composite nanofibrous membranes for separating oil-in-water emulsion

Guo Hui,Zhang Dong,Jiang Lanying

In this work, nanofibrous membranes for separating oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion were prepared by electrospinning. The membrane material was polymer blend of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and by adjusting polymer composition and concentration, as well as applying crosslinking by glutaraldehyde (GD ) and hydrolysis inside NaOH solution, membrane with desired properties, particularly hydrophilicity and underwater oil repellency were obtained. For PAN/PVA composite membrane modified by glutaraldehyde for 1.5 h and NaOH for 1.5 h, the water contact angle initially was around 5° and decreased to 0 o with a transition time of only 0.3 s. The membrane also showed recommendable performance in O/W emulsion separation. Under a driving force of 0.8 kPa, the highest starting flux of 953 L/m 2 h and 532 L/m 2 h were registered with the treatment of surfactant-free emulsion (SFE) and surfactant-stabilized emulsion (SSE), respectively. The membrane recovered 96% of its initial flux in a 5-cycle reusability test using SFE, and the oil rejection coefficient maintained higher than 97%. FTIR and XPS characterizations confirmed the success in chemical modifications. It was also found that glutaraldehyde crosslinking helped to improve the macroscopic structure integrity of the membrane in aqueous environment.

PPS/TA-PEI/β-FeOOH membranes with powerful photo-Fenton self-cleaning capability for efficient oil–water emulsion separation

Shiwei Tian,Yaqi Zhang,Qiankun Sha,Xingxiang Zhang,Tian Yang,Xuhuan Yan,Na Han

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) microporous membranes have garnered extensive research enthusiasm concerning their outstanding permeation performance and separation accuracy in treating oily wastewater. Nevertheless, the inherent hydrophobic chemical structure, along with the noticeable concentration polarization effect, predisposes them to severe membrane contamination during the separation process. Accordingly, it is desirable to design a PPS self-cleaning membrane with superior anti-fouling capability, fast transport, and remarkable flux recovery. This study marks the first combination of PPS membrane materials with the photo-Fenton process. In detail, the polyphenol (tannic acid, TA)-polycation (polyethyleneimine, PEI)-metal ion (Fe 3+ ) double cross-linking coatings were first assembled on the PPS substrate surface. Subsequently, β-FeOOH photocatalysts were synthesized through in-situ mineralization to further strengthen the hydrophilicity of the membranes. The obtained PPS/TA-PEI/β-FeOOH composite membrane achieved exceptional separation of diverse oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The PPS/TA-PEI/β-FeOOH membranes exhibited in-air superhydrophilic and under-water superoleophobicity, exhibiting under-water oil contact angles greater than 151° for diverse oil agents. The fabricated composite membranes displayed high permeability (a flux of the petroleum ether-in-water (P/W) emulsion reached 3400.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 driven by a pressure of 0.05 MPa) along with ideal oil rejection (98.6 %). Significantly, the PPS/TA-PEI/β-FeOOH membrane possessed powerful photo-Fenton self-cleaning capability, and its flux recoveries of the contaminated membrane exceeded 90.3 % for varied O/W emulsions after being cleaned by visible light for 10 min. We believe that our research presents a novel approach for the exploitation of PPS-based photo-Fenton self-cleaning membranes, which also exhibit great applicative potential in oily wastewater treatment.
