High-entropy MnCoCuZnAlSe2 nanosheet arrays for highly efficient alkaline oxygen evolution reaction

Yue Shang,Fangqing Wang,Ying Li,Limin Liang,Qiuyan Hao,Hui Liu

The oxygen evolution reaction is the primary obstacle in the electrochemical breakdown of water; whereas transition metal selenides exhibit remarkable OER activity, their stability is compromised by the oxidative dissolution of selenium. The high-entropy materials can provide a feasible strategy to solve this problem due to their multi-element synergy and entropy stabilization effect. Here, we designed novel high-entropy MnCoCuZnAlSe 2 electrocatalysts with ultra-low overpotential (190 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) and exceptional endurance (500 h@10 mA cm −2 ), which outperform other selenide and IrO 2 catalysts. The high entropy effect was experimentally confirmed to inhibit selenium dissolution and improve the stability of transition metal selenides. Calculations using Density Functional Theory suggest that cobalt is actually MnCoCuZnAlSe 2 's true active center. The extraordinary OER properties of high-entropy selenides offer great opportunities for the design of ideal catalysts for practical applications.

Inhibiting the dissolution of the intermediate with conductive polymer coating layer to improve the stability of CuTCNQ cathode for K-ion batteries

Qijiu Deng,Zhiyun Zhao,Lei Mao,Yiming Zou,Bo Gou,Yinling Yan,Weihua Zhang,Rong Yang,Yunhua Xu

The seriously dissolution of the intermediate into the organic electrolyte has been the key limitation for metal-organic compounds in K-ion batteries. Here, we initially inhibit the dissolution of intermediate products (TCNQ 0 ) with a highly conducting polymer (polypyrrole, PPy) coated on the CuTCNQ. And the adsorption energy between the conductive polymer PPy and the intermediate product TCNQ can be significantly enhanced (−0.55 eV) as compared to the TCNQ molecules (0.21 eV), which can restrain the free intermediate product dissolved in the organic electrolyte, resulting in an enhanced cyclic stability as well as rate performance. Additionally, the highly conductive PPy exhibits flexible structure, which can weaken the interface effect between the electrode and the coating layer. This work provides further understanding on surface coating on metal-organic compounds and has significant basic scientific sense for the in-depth research of K-ion batteries.

Interface Modulation of 2D Superlattice Heterostructures with Oxygen-enriched Sites and Dissolution Restraint for Effective Rare-earth Elements Extraction

Hui Cai,Meng Rong,Qiyu Meng,Zhiqian Liu,Siqi Liang,Shan Ni,Liangrong Yang

Effective recovery of rare earth elements from wastewater is crucial for the modern industry, as well as for protecting the human health and ecosystem. Nevertheless, it is still challenging to realize efficient and selective low-concentration rare earth extraction in systems containing high levels competing metal ions. Here, we report on the fabrication of two-dimensional superlattice heterostructures (VOGO-x) through the alternating restacking of VOPO 4 nanosheets and GO-PDDA nanosheets via electrostatic self-assembly. The meticulously organized molecular scale of superlattice heterostructures enable the full exposure of accessible adsorption sites and facilitate the transport of rare earth ions, meanwhile the abundant oxygen-containing phosphate groups within the interlayer can realize selective rare earth ions extraction. Furthermore, the tunable interlayer interaction can promote structure stability to prevent dissolution. Consequently, VOGO-11 possesses excellent rare earth adsorption performance, with a saturated adsorption capacity (Nd(III) 631.52 mg/g, Dy(III) 689.48 mg/g, Lu(III) 716.06 mg/g), high utilization rate of adsorption sites and short adsorption equilibrium time of simply 10 min in the REE aqueous solution. Furthermore, VOGO-11 exhibits outstanding selective rare earth adsorption ability over a wide range of metal ions in the low-concentration simulated wastewater and actual leaching tailings. These results demonstrate the material’s promising potential in capturing rare earth ions and pave the way to the development of two-dimensional superlattice heterostructures through interface modulation for effective rare earth extraction.

Enabling long-cycling aqueous sodium-ion batteries via Mn dissolution inhibition using sodium ferrocyanide electrolyte additive

Liang Zhaoheng,Tian Fei,Yang Gongzheng,Wang Chengxin

Aqueous sodium-ion batteries (AIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage due to their safe operational properties and low cost. However, AIBs have low specific energy (i.e., <80 Wh kg −1 ) and limited lifespans (e.g., hundreds of cycles). Mn-Fe Prussian blue analogues are considered ideal positive electrode materials for AIBs, but they show rapid capacity decay due to Jahn-Teller distortions. To circumvent these issues, here, we propose a cation-trapping method that involves the introduction of sodium ferrocyanide (Na 4 Fe(CN) 6 ) as a supporting salt in a highly concentrated NaClO 4 -based aqueous electrolyte solution to fill the surface Mn vacancies formed in Fe-substituted Prussian blue Na 1.58 Fe 0.07 Mn 0.97 Fe(CN) 6  · 2.65H 2 O (NaFeMnF) positive electrode materials during cycling. When the engineered aqueous electrolyte solution and the NaFeMnF-based positive electrode are tested in combination with a 3, 4, 9, 10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide-based negative electrode in a coin cell configuration, a specific energy of 94 Wh kg –1 at 0.5 A g −1 (specific energy based on the active material mass of both electrodes) and a specific discharge capacity retention of 73.4% after 15000 cycles at 2 A g −1 are achieved.

Boosting zinc ion storage performance of sandwich-like V2O5/graphene composite by effectively inhibiting vanadium dissolution

Tongyu Liu,Zijie Xu,Linlin Chen,Yali Zhang,Ming Wang,Yun Jia,Yaoguo Huang

Improving the stability of the layered structure and suppressing vanadium dissolution during repeated Zn 2+ insertion/extraction processes are considered to be the key to promote the electrochemical stability of vanadium-based cathodes for ZIBs. In this work, a group of sandwich-like V 2 O 5 /graphene composites (V 2 O 5 /xG) were controllably fabricated by tuning the amount of hydrophobic graphene. With the increase of graphene content, the corresponding electrochemical properties show a parabolic trend that increase first and then decrease. A maximum capacity of 270 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and a superior cycle stability with 82.4% capacitance retention after 6000 cycles at 10 A g −1 are achieved when the amount of graphene is about 10.4% (that is V 2 O 5 /5G). The addition of graphene has been proven not only to act as an effective conductive network to promote charge transfer and enhance the pseudocapacitance effect on the electrode surface; but also to increase the electrode hydrophobicity, effectively inhibiting the dissolution of vanadium, and promoting the desolvation and diffusion kinetics of hydrated zinc ions. Moreover, the graphene layer, as a structural stabilizer, effectively prevents the structure of the active component V 2 O 5 from collapsing during cycling, contributing to the long-term cycle life.

Siglec15 Checkpoint Blockade for Simultaneous Immunochemotherapy and Osteolysis Inhibition in Lung Adenocarcinoma Spinal Metastasis via a Hollow Nanoplatform

Haifeng Liang,Lei Zhou,Zhichao Hu,Yuxiang Ge,Taiwei Zhang,Qing Chen,Ben Wang,Shunyi Lu,Wang Ding,Jian Dong,Fengfeng Xue,Libo Jiang

Low responsiveness to anti-programmed death-1/programmed death-ligand 1 (anti-PD-1/PD-L1) for solid tumors indicates the presence of other immunosuppressive pathways. Siglec15, a newly discovered immune checkpoint, has been reported to repress immune responses in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and regulate osteoclast differentiation. However, the role of Siglec15 in the treatment for bone metastasis remains unclear. Herein, Siglec15 shows significantly higher expression in lung adenocarcinoma spinal metastasis (LUAD-SM) than in para-cancerous spinal tissues and primary LUAD. Subsequently, a TME-responsive hollow MnO 2 nanoplatform (H-M) loaded with Siglec15 siRNA and cisplatin (H-M@siS15/Cis) is developed, and the surface is modified with an aspartic acid octapeptide (Asp 8 ), thus allowing H-M to target spinal metastasis. High drug-loading capacity, good biocompatibility, effective tumor accumulation, and efficient Siglec15 silencing are demonstrated. Furthermore, the nanoparticles could reverse immunosuppression caused by tumor cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and inhibit osteoclast differentiation via Siglec15 downregulation in vitro. In a LUAD-SM mouse model, H-M@siS15/Cis-Asp 8 exhibits superior therapeutic efficacy via synergetic immunochemotherapy and osteolysis inhibition. Taken together, this single nanoplatform reveals the therapeutic potential of the new immune checkpoint Siglec15 in LUAD-SM and provides a strategy to treat this disease.

Oxygen-bridged electronic coupling of Ir single-atom sites for durable acidic oxygen evolution reaction

Yijun Xiang,Hui Wang,Shaoxiong Li,Linlin Li,Jianwei Ren,Gengyu Xing,Liming Deng,Shengjie Peng

Developing stable and efficient single-atom electrocatalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for advancing proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, the lack of precisely tailored coordination environments capable of preventing Ir single-atom dissolution remains a critical barrier. Herein, we construct Ir single-atom catalysts supported on Co3O4 (IrSA-Co3O4) via the synchronized formation of Co defects and the immobilization of Ir single atoms during precursor pyrolysis. Atomically dispersed Ir atoms are anchored at octahedral Co defect sites, forming a configuration of single atoms confined within the spinel lattice. Benefiting from the oxygen-bridged electronic coupling within the Ir–O–Co configuration, the electronic structure of Ir sites is optimized to enable moderate intermediate adsorption while mitigating dissolution. As a result, IrSA-Co3O4 achieves a low overpotential of 199 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and operates stably for 150 h at 200 mA cm−2 during PEMWE. This work provides new insights into the rational design of stable single-atom catalysts for acidic OER by effectively suppressing active-site dissolution.

Porous carbon adsorption layer enabling highly reversible redox-reaction of a high potential organic electrode material for sodium ion batteries

Yanjie Wang,Chun Fang,Ying Huang,Qing Liu,Ruirui Zhao,Xuli Ding,Yunhui Huang

Organic compounds have been utilized in rechargeable batteries as electrode materials on account of their designable structures and reversible redox properties. However, most of them suffer from problems with dissolution resulting in poor electrochemical performance. In this work, we adapt a sodium salt of tetracyanoquinodimethane (NaTCNQ) to work as a high redox potential cathode material in sodium ion batteries (SIBs). A porous carbon coated separator is demonstrated to be an adsorption layer and prevents the dissolved active material from migrating to the anode side. The NaTCNQ cell assembled with a carbon layer containing 5% activated carbon (AC) exhibits a higher initial capacity and greatly improved cycling stability. Using a conductive adsorption layer in organic redox batteries is a promising pathway to develop high performance organic electrode materials for SIBs.

Engineering vanadium dioxide cathodes toward ultrastable zinc ion batteries

Wenli Li,Xiangyi Gu,Jie Zhang,Xu Wang,Yujia Cai,Guohua Gao,Qinghong Wang,Jianguo Lu

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) represent a promising energy storage technology due to their intrinsic safety, low cost, and environmental compatibility. However, the practical application of vanadium-based cathodes is hindered by structural instability and rapid capacity decay during cycling. Herein, we develop an Al 3+ doping strategy to engineer the VO 2 cathode with remarkably enhanced stability. The introduction of Al 3+ not only induces favorable oxygen vacancies but also reinforces the host structure, effectively mitigating lattice strain and minimizing vanadium dissolution. The resulting Al2-VO 2 cathode exhibits a high specific capacity of 452 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and exceptional long-term cyclability, retaining ∼70% capacity after 10000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . Kinetics studies further reveal capacitive-dominated storage behavior and facilitated Zn 2+ diffusion, underscoring the role of defect engineering in boosting electrochemical performance. This work provides a feasible cation-doping approach to realize highly stable VO 2 -based cathodes for sustainable energy storage applications.

Highly Zn2+-conductive and robust modified montmorillonite protective layer of electrodes toward high-performance rechargeable zinc-ion batteries

Yong Wang,Yunmiao Fan,Dan Liao,Yiyu Wu,Yang Yu,Chaoquan Hu

The corrosion, parasitic side-reaction and dendrite of Zn anode as well as the dissolution of MnO 2 cathode limit the commercial application of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, a novel coating layer on Zn anode and MnO 2 cathode of rechargeable ZIBs is rationally designed by mixing hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB)-pillared organic montmorillonite with ZnSO 4 /MnSO 4 solution (ZnOMMT). ZnOMMT can serve as the protective layer to alleviate Zn corrosion and MnO 2 dissolution while the unique interlayer structure of ZnOMMT can also offer a selective pathway for fast Zn 2+ transfer and uniform Zn 2+ diffusion to inhibit the side-reaction and Zn dendrite generation. Notably, by the powerful pillaring of CTAB cations, the expanded and robust nanoscale interlayer tunnels of ZnOMMT for Zn 2+ diffusion are constructed to guarantee outstanding ionic conductivity (6.52 mS cm −1 ), high Zn 2+ transference number ( t + =0.66) and outstanding cyclic stability during deep cycles. Therefore, ZIBs with ZnOMMT coating layer deliver a steady long-term reversible capacity (267 mAh g −1 until 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , 205 mAh g −1 until 700 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 ). The rational design of CTAB-pillared montmorillonite protective layer brings a brand-new opportunity to the realization of high-performance rechargeable ZIBs.

Stable Proton Storage in α-MoO3 via a Bifunctional Molecular Crowding Electrolyte

Xiang Cai,Shijun Tang,Zi-min An,Qiyao Shao,Kuixuan Zhang,Huan Liu

Layered molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO 3 ) storing protons exhibits a high theoretical capacity and extraordinary rate capability and can be used as a reliable anode material for aqueous proton batteries. But a severe dissolution issue during operation always results in rapid failure in battery performance. Herein, a bifunctional molecular crowding electrolyte was engineered to address this issue. The high-concentration inert polymer, polyethylene glycol 400, reduces the free water activity of the electrolyte and the low-concentration solute, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, forms a proton-rich electrolyte environment under such a water-poor condition thanks to its intrinsic superacidity, both of which favour the reverse shift of the dissolution equilibrium, and with the latter enabling the electrolyte with high ion conductivity as well. Thus, the α-MoO 3 electrode in the above electrolyte shows a longer lifespan without sacrificing its rate capability. The analysis on charge storage mechanisms by X-ray powder diffraction technique demonstrates that α-MoO 3 undergoes bare proton-involved multistep two-phase and solid-solution reactions, where only the two-phase reaction between hydrogen molybdenum bronze II and III phases and the solid-solution reactions of themselves are reversible.

Electrolyte design enabling practical lithium/sulfur batteries via interfacial manipulation and inhibited polysulfide dissolution

Yilong Lin,Zexian Zhang,Junru Wu,Jiayi Wang,Yuqing Jia,Xiaojin Jin,Feng Liu,Sheng Huang,Yanwu Chen,Yuezhong Meng

To address low stability at the lithium metal anode and lithium polysulfide shuttling is critical for high-energy-density lithium/sulfur (Li/S) pouch cells in practical applications. However, functional electrolytes that are compatible with Li anodes and S cathodes are required to construct more stable interfaces. Herein, we report a highly compatible electrolyte (NBME) containing bis(2-methoxyethoxy)methane (BME) as a single solvent with 1 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) and 2% LiNO3 additive. Compared to the traditional DOL/DME blend solvent, better electrochemical performance of 200 cycles in Li/Cu asymmetric cells and over 1200 h of cycling in Li/Li symmetric cells was realized with NBME electrolyte. Improved anode/electrolyte interfacial stability results from the anion-rich solvation sheath, thus forming an inorganic-rich SEI. In addition, the lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle effect could be relieved in NBME electrolyte due to the low solubility of LiPS. Such synergistic effects enable the Li/S pouch cells to achieve 70% capacity retention after 60 cycles.
