Codeposition Modification of Cation Exchange Membranes with Dopamine and Crown Ether To Achieve High K+ Electrodialysis Selectivity

Shanshan Yang,Yuanwei Liu,Junbin Liao,Huawen Liu,Yuliang Jiang,Bart Van der Bruggen,Jiangnan Shen,Congjie Gao

Surface modification has been proven to be an effective approach for ion exchange membranes to achieve separation of counterions with different valences by altering interfacial construction of membranes to improve ion transfer performance. In this work, we have fabricated a series of novel cation exchange membranes (CEMs) by modifying sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) membranes via codeposition of mussel-inspired dopamine (DA) and 4′-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 (ACE), followed by glutaraldehyde cross-linking, aiming at achieving selective separation of specific cations. The as-prepared membranes before and after modification were systematically characterized in terms of their structural, physicochemical, electrochemical, and electrodialytic properties. In the electrodialysis process, the modified membranes exhibit distinct perm selectivity to K+ ions in binary (K+/Li+, K+/Na+, K+/Mg2+) and ternary (K+/Li+/Mg2+) systems. In particular, at a constant current density of 5.0 mA·cm–2, modified membrane M-co-0.50 shows significantly prominent perm selectivity in the K+/Mg2+ system and M-co-0.75 exhibits remarkable performance in the K+/Li+ system , superior to commercial monovalent-selective CEM (CIMS, , ). Besides, in the K+/Li+/Mg2+ ternary system, K+ flux reaches 30.8 nmol·cm–2·s–1 for M-co-0.50, while it reaches 25.8 nmol·cm–2·s–1 for CIMS. It possibly arises from the effects of pore-size sieving and the synergistic action of electric field driving and host–guest molecular recognition of ACE and K+ ions. This study can provide new insights into the separation of specific alkali metal ions, especially on reducing influence of coexisting cations K+ and Na+ on Li+ ion recovery from salt lake and seawater.

Mussel-inspired polyphenol/polyethyleneimine assembled membranes with highly positive charged surface for unprecedented high cation perm-selectivity

Wenguang Wang,Yanqiu Zhang,Feiran Li,Yuhao Chen,Seyed Majid Mojallali Rostami,Seyed Saeid Hosseini,Lu Shao

Mono/multivalent cation separation techniques have shown increasing importance in diverse environmental and energy applications. The separation performance of emerging monovalent cation exchange membranes (MCEMs) is greatly determined by the architecture and charge property of MCEMs, which should be finely tuned for the energy efficiency applications. Herein, a series of mussel-inspired polyphenol/polyethyleneimine assembled membranes (PPAMs) with highly positively-charged surfaces were elegantly constructed through a facile layer-by-layer assembly method. Based on the synergetic reactions between polyphenols with multiple reactive groups and PEI with abundant amino groups, the denser membrane surfaces with a higher crosslinking degree and more positive charges were readily formed. As a result, the Na + /Mg 2+ and Li + /Mg 2+ perm-selectivities of PPAMs with such surface architecture and charge property followed the same order as gallic acid/polyethyleneimine membrane (M-GA/PEI) > pyrogallic/polyethyleneimine membrane (M-Pyrogallic/PEI) > protocatechuic acid/polyethyleneimine membrane (M-PA/PEI) > caffeic acid/polyethyleneimine membrane (M-CA/PEI). Most interestingly, the M-GA/PEI fabricated exhibited the unprecedented perm-selectivity (Na + /Mg 2+ ) up to 180.4 with Na + flux of 6.01 × 10 −8  mol cm −2  s −1 , which exceeded the current “Upper Bound” plot of MCEMs. The low membrane resistance and excellent separation performance of PPAMs brought great potential for resource recovery and environmental remediation.

Effects of acid acceptor and pH on the structure and filtration performance of nanofiltration membrane

Chenyu Zhu,Xue Zhang,Fuzhi Li,Ruochen Yang,Xuan Zhao

The thin film composite nanofiltration (TFC-NF) membranes with various properties were prepared by changing type and concentration of acid acceptors in the piperazine (PIP) solution. The influences of acid acceptors on interfacial polymerization (IP) process depend on the pH of PIP solution and the properties of acid acceptors. Na 2 CO 3 and TEA provide positive effects at a pH range of 11.2–12.0. Especially for Na 2 CO 3 , water permeability and ion selectivity of the membrane simultaneously enhanced. The pH values reached above 12.8 with NaOH, and negative effects on permeance and selectivity were detected. The pH values ranged 10–11 after adding Na 3 PO 4 and NaHCO 3 . The rejections of both Cl − and SO 4 2− were high, especially for Cl − rejection increasing to above 73%. The pH values got to around 7 with NaH 2 PO 4 . The IP reaction was retarded and defects were detected on the membrane with quite low SO 4 2− rejection. Protonation of PIP happens at low pH, while hydrolysis of acyl chloride of trimesoyl chloride happens at high pH. These changes will slow down the deprotonated PIP diffusion and the IP reaction. It is a feasible way to fabricate tailored NF membranes by changing acid acceptors and adjusting pH value of the PIP solution.

A Novel All-Solid-State Ion-Selective Electrode with Selenite-doped Polyaniline

Yifan Zhou,Qiujin Wang,Jianbo Wu,Rongrong Wu,Yuanfeng Huang,Ying Ye,Huawei Qin,Pingping Zhang

A novel all-solid-state selenite electrode with Ag and nano-Ag as a substrate and selenite-doped polyaniline as a sensitive membrane was fabricated by using electrochemical methods. Nano-Ag particles were electrodeposited on the surface of a cathode Ag wire in 0.1 M AgNO 3 standard solution with a 1.2 V amplitude, 50 Hz frequency and 30 s action time. The polyaniline layer was coated by chronoamperometry and doped with selenite in selenite solution by the same technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis proved the successful doping of selenite. The selenite electrode, which had excellent stability and repeatability, had an excellent Nernst linear response (slope -30.08 mV per decade, R 2 >0.99) with a linear range of 5×10 -6 ~1×10 -1 M and detection limit of 1.627×10 -6 M. The response time was less than 2 s, and the lifespan was more than 178 days. The electrode showed a high selectivity to selenite ions during the interference study. The recovery rates in the sample test were from 95~99%, indicating that the electrode can be applied in real sample measurements. Compared to previous work, this electrode is superior in terms of multiple properties.

MXene as a Cation-Selective Cathode Material for Asymmetric Capacitive Deionization

Bingbing Chen,Aihu Feng,Ruixiang Deng,Kun Liu,Yun Yu,Lixin Song

Capacitive deionization (CDI) has become a promising method to solve the shortage of freshwater resources recently. However, the co-ion expulsion effect obviously hinders electrosorption capacity and charge efficiency of CDI. In this work, an asymmetric CDI cell is assembled in which Na+-intercalated Ti3C2Tx (NaOH-Ti3C2Tx) serves as a cation-selective cathode, while the activated carbon (AC) serves as the anode. The NaOH-Ti3C2Tx with negatively charged surface groups (−OH, −O, and −F) is adopted to weaken the co-ion expulsion effect. Benefited from the synergistic effect of the reduced co-ion expulsion effect and expanded interlayer space, the asymmetric CDI cell achieves a higher electrosorption capacity of 12.19 mg g–1 and a higher charge efficiency of 0.826 compared with the symmetric one composed of AC (4.55 mg g–1 and 0.306) in 100 mg L–1 NaCl solution. High cyclic stability of the as-prepared asymmetric CDI cell is also observed. The improved desalination performance indicates that NaOH-Ti3C2Tx is a promising alternative as cation-selective cathode material for asymmetric CDI cells. The desalination mechanism is discussed in detail to lay the foundation for further improvement of the CDI performance of other 2D materials like MXene.

An All-Solid-State Nitrate Ion-Selective Electrode with Nanohybrids Composite Films for In-Situ Soil Nutrient Monitoring

Ming Chen,Miao Zhang,Xuming Wang,Qingliang Yang,Maohua Wang,Gang Liu,Lan Yao

In this paper, an all-solid-state nitrate doped polypyrrole (PPy(NO3−) ion-selective electrode (ISE) was prepared with a nanohybrid composite film of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO). Preliminary tests on the ISE based in-situ soil nitrate–nitrogen (NO3−-N) monitoring was conducted in a laboratory 3-stage column. Comparisons were made between the NO3−-N content of in-situ soil percolate solution and laboratory-prepared extract solution. Possible influential factors of sample depth, NO3−-N content, soil texture, and moisture were varied. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) characterized morphology and content information of the composite film of ERGO/AuNPs. Due to the performance excellence for conductivity, stability, and hydrophobicity, the ISE with ERGO/AuNPs illustrates an acceptable detection range from 10−1to 10−5M. The response time was determined to be about 10 s. The lifetime was 65 days, which revealed great potential for the implementation of the ERGO/AuNPs mediated ISE for in-situ NO3−-N monitoring. In-situ NO3−-N testing results conducted by the all-solid-state ISE followed a similar trend with the standard UV-VIS method.

Self-sustaining alkaline seawater electrolysis via forward osmosis membranes

Ke Shi,Hongyi Wan,Keyu Wang,Fumohan Fang,Shiyi Li,Yixing Wang,Linfeng Lei,Linzhou Zhuang,Zhi Xu

Seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production faces inherent challenges, including side reactions, corrosion, and scaling, stemming from the intricate composition of seawater. In response, researchers have turned to continuous water splitting using forward osmosis (FO)-driven seawater desalination. However, the necessity of a neutral electrolyte hampers this strategy due to the limited current density and scarcity of precious metals. Herein, this study applies alkali-durable FO membranes to enable self-sustaining seawater splitting, which can selective withdraw water molecules, from seawater, via concentration gradient. The membranes demonstrated outstanding perm-selectivity of water/ions (∼5830 mol mol −1 ) during month-long alkaline resistance tests, preventing electrolyte leaching (>97% OH − retention) while maintaining ∼95% water balance ( V FO = V electrolysis ) via preserved concentration gradient for consistent forward-osmosis influx of water molecules. With the consistent electrolyte environment protected by the polyamide FO membranes, the NiFe-Ar-P catalyst exhibits promising performance: a sustain current density of 360 mA cm −2 maintained at the cell voltage of 2.10 V and 2.15 V for 360 h in the offshore seawater, preventing Cl/Br corrosion (98% rejection) and Mg/Ca passivation (99.6% rejection). This research marks a significant advancement towards efficient and durable seawater-based hydrogen production.

Supramolecular-coordinated nanofiltration membranes with quaternary-ammonium Cyclen for efficient lithium extraction from high magnesium/lithium ratio brine

Ning Gan,Yuqing Lin,Baolong Wu,Yulong Qiu,Haopan Sun,Jingwen Su,Jianguo Yu,Qian Lin,Hideto Matsuyama

Ion-selective membranes (ISM) with sub-nanosized pore channels hold significant potential for applications in saline wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Herein, novel synergistic ion channels featuring bi-periodic structures were constructed through the coordination of functional Cyclen (quaternary_1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane, Q_Cyclen) and Cu 2+ -m-Phenylenediamine (Cu 2+ -MPD) to develop supramolecular membranes for lithium extraction. The exterior quaternary ammonium-rich sites exhibit a significant Donnan exclusion effect, resulting in tremendous mono/divalent (Li + /Mg 2+ ) ion selectivity; while the interior regular-confined channels of Cyclen yield a fast vehicular pathway, facilitating water molecules and Li + ion-selective transport. The optimized membrane exhibited an increased water permeance of 19.2 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 and simultaneously promoted Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity (achieving a selectivity of 18.5 under a Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio of 30), surpassing the trade-off limit of conventional nanofiltration membranes. Due to the acquired excellent Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity, lithium extraction from simulated salt-lake brines was successfully achieved through a two-stage nanofiltration process, reducing the Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio from 40 to 1.1. This work validates the applicability of macrocyclic with intrinsic sub-nanosized channels and desired multifunctionality for developing high-performance ISM for efficient lithium separation and beyond.

Gelation induced selectivity enhancement of facilitated transport membranes and its relation to ion transport resistance

Yanshao Yang,Yuzhang Zhu,Youjing Zhao,Zejun Song,Di Zhu,Min Wang,Jian Jin,Wangxi Fang

Facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) constitute a promising group of membranes to achieve high precision ion separation, especially for ions with similar sizes and charges. Gelation is an effective means to improve the performance of FTMs by balancing the transport carrier mobility and stability in the membrane. Here, the phenomenon of gelation induced ion selectivity enhancement and its relation to transport resistance were systematically investigated, leading to the development of gelatinous FTMs designed for highly selective ion separation. The ion transport resistance across the FTM was regulated by controlling the degree and proportion of gelation. Interestingly, gelatinous FTMs with increased transport resistance exhibit a reduced passage of most ion species but favor the transport of ion species with a smaller size. By adjusting the extent of gelation, the membrane’s Li/K separation factor reached 150, more than three times incremented from a control membrane with only liquid phase carriers. Moreover, the negative impact of increased transport resistance on ion transport rate was offset by reducing the gel layer thickness, so that high ion selectivity was achieved while maintaining fast ion transport. Therefore, highly selective FTMs can be obtained by gelation induced ion transport behavior manipulation, and this work serves as a demonstration on designing high-performance lithium selective FTMs via gelation.

Cell-inspired selective potassium removal towards hyperkalemia therapy by microphase-isolated core-shell microspheres

Zhoujun Wang,Rui Yuan,Peiyang Li,Yanping Huang,Weifeng Zhao,Changsheng Zhao

Hyperkalemia is a common metabolic problem in patients with chronic kidney disease. Although oral medications and hemodialysis are clinically applied for lowering serum potassium , the intrinsic limitations encourage alternative therapy in the trend of adsorbent-based miniaturized blood purification devices. Cells serve as the biological K + storage units that accumulate K + through multiple mechanisms. Inspired by cells, our strategy aims at favorable permeation and enrichment of K + in the microsphere . We incorporate cation-affinitive groups into core-shell structures with submicron-sized phase separation. These nano-spaced side-groups cooperate to form interlinked clusters, where crown ethers with Angstrom-scale ring for size-matched complexation, while ionic sulfonic acid groups for hydrophilicity and charge-buffering. The unique structure with such non-covalent interactions facilitates K + for permeation across the shell and binding to the core while also ensuring mechanical strength and anti-swelling durability in biofluids. The microspheres exhibit high selectivity ratios of K + ( S K/Na , S K/Ca , S K/Mg up to 9.8, 21.6, and 17.7). As column adsorbents for hemoperfusion simulation, they effectively lower elevated K + levels to the normal range (clearance rates up to 44.4%/45.3% for hyperkalemic human serum/blood). Blood compatibility tests show low protein adsorption , preferable hemocyte compatibility, and anticoagulation property in vitro. This promising strategy has clinical potential for hyperkalemia in high-risk patients. Statement of significance Hyperkalemia (serum potassium >5 mmol/L) is a common complication in chronic renal failure patients. The limitations of existing treatments prompt a shift to wearable artificial kidney technology for clinical convenience and efficacy. Existing treatments have limitations, and we turn to adsorbent-based miniaturized blood purification devices in the prospect of wearable artificial kidney technology. There exists a lack of ion-specific adsorbents applied in extracorporeal circuits to redress electrolyte imbalances like hyperkalemia. Inspired by cells, we aim at the favorable permeation and enrichment of K + by microspheres. The microspheres have a microphase-isolated core-shell structure, whose nano-spaced groups form cation-affinitive clusters. Selective K + removal and blood compatibility are achieved. We expect this strategy to enlighten alternative hyperkalemia therapy for these high-risk patients.

Polypyrrole modified porous poly(ether sulfone) membranes with high performance for vanadium flow batteries

Zhizhang Yuan,Qing Dai,Yuyue Zhao,Wenjing Lu,Xianfeng Li,Huamin Zhang

Polypyrrole (PPY) modified porous poly(ether sulfone) (PPY/PES) membranes with excellent ion conductivity and high ion selectivity are prepared and employed in vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). The porous PES membranes are modified through in situ polymerization of pyrrole (PR) by using VO2+ as the oxidizing agent. The positively charged PPY nanoparticles can effectively retain vanadium ions via the Donnan exclusion and afford excellent ion conductivity through the interaction between the sulfuric acid in electrolytes and the nitrogen elements in PPY. As a consequence, the designed PPY/PES porous membranes demonstrate high ion selectivity and excellent ion conductivity along with exceptional chemical stability under VFB operation conditions. The PPY/PES porous membranes exhibited a very prospective performance for vanadium flow applications, showing a coulombic efficiency (CE) of 96.30% and an energy efficiency (EE) of 87.20% at a current density of 80 mA cm−2, which are much better than those of a VFB with a Nafion 115 membrane (coulombic efficiency of 93.16% and energy efficiency of 82.29%). Furthermore, a VFB using the PPY/PES porous membranes delivers a stable battery efficiency after continuously operating for more than 100 cycles, displaying good potential usage in VFB applications.

A Composite Membrane with High Stability and Low Cost Specifically for Iron–Chromium Flow Battery

Lin Qiao,Shumin Liu,Maolin Fang,Mingjun Yang,Xiangkun Ma

The iron–chromium flow battery (ICFB), the earliest flow battery, shows promise for large-scale energy storage due to its low cost and inherent safety. However, there is no specific membrane designed that meets the special requirements of ICFBs. To match the harsh operation parameters of ICFBs, we designed and fabricated a composite membrane with high mechanical, chemical, and thermal stability. In the design, a commercial porous polyethylene membrane is selected as the framework material, offering high mechanical stability and reducing the cost. Meanwhile, the Nafion resin is filled in the pores of a porous membrane, which inhibits the transfer of redox-active ions and creates the proton channels via hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase separation. As a result, the composite membrane exhibits high conductivity, selectivity, and stability, especially with almost no swelling at high operating temperatures. Thus, an ICFB with the prepared membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency of 93.29% at the current density of 80 mA cm−2and runs stably for over 300 cycles. This work provides an easy method to fabricate high-performance and low-cost membranes specifically for ICFBs and has the potential to promote the development of ICFBs.Keywords:iron–chromium flow battery;pore-filling Daramic membrane;ion selectivity;low cost;high stability
