A study was undertaken into the emulsification and viscosity reduction processes of crude oil originating from the Jurassic formation of the Sichuan Basin. Central to this investigation was the successful synthesis of a carbon-based nano emulsifier named GOPH, utilizing graphene oxide as substrate and hydrophilic alkyl glycidyl ether and polyoxyethylene ether as modifiers. The structural integrity of this nano-emulsifier was comprehensively characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Notably, GOPH nanofluids exhibited a remarkable merit in decreasing the oil/water interfacial tension from 31.96 mN m−1 to a low value of 9.76 mN m−1 with a critical concentration of 45 ppm. Moreover, interfacial film folding experiments revealed that GOPH nanoparticles “jammed” at the oil–water interface, forming a robust film. When Jurassic crude oil was the oil phase, and GOPH nanofluids were introduced into the water phase, the crude oil was successfully induced to form a low-viscosity oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Emulsion droplet size and viscosity measurements demonstrated that this emulsion possessed small size distributions with remarkable stability, achieving a viscosity reduction of up to 91.6% at a water content of 80%. The underlying mechanism for this phenomenon mainly lies in the interaction between the carbon-based nano-emulsifier and asphaltene, which form a composite unit, enabling the construction of a flexible interfacial film that significantly stabilizes the O/W emulsion.

To overcome the problems of large dosage, fast sedimentation, and the unsatisfactory emulsification effect of traditional magnetic nanoparticles, polymer-modified magnetic nanoparticle Co3O4@HPAM was synthesized as an emulsifier for heavy oil O/W emulsion by modifying the surface of Co3O4. The composition of Co3O4@HPAM was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Then, the effects of the mass fraction of magnetic nanoparticles before and after modification on the stability and rheology of the emulsion were compared and analyzed. The experiments show that the degree of reduction of the water-separation rate under the action of Co3O4@HPAM was 13 times higher than that under the action of Co3O4 at the same mass fraction. By using Co3O4@HPAM, the water separation of the emulsion was only 6.74% at 4 h, while the viscosity reduction was greater than 97% at a mass fraction of 0.04%. Finally, combined with the test results of zeta potential, interfacial tension, contact angle, and oil droplet distribution, the effect mechanism of Co3O4@HPAM on the viscosity reduction of heavy oil emulsification was investigated. It is found that the polymer-modified magnetic nanoparticles have stronger negative electricity, a larger contact angle, and smaller interfacial tension, while the oil droplets under their action have a smaller radius and a more homogeneous distribution. The research in this paper provides a theoretical basis for the application of magnetic nanoparticles in heavy oil emulsification and viscosity reduction technology.

Xanthan gum (XG) is a widely used thickener known for its high viscosity and excellent stability. However, the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) leads to a clear decrease in its viscosity, thereby affecting the application of xanthan gum in food products containing AA. Therefore, the aim of this study was to uncover the mechanism by which AA reduces the viscosity of xanthan gum. Ascorbic acid (0.1 mmol/L) caused a viscosity loss reaching up to 96% for xanthan gum solutions (2 g/L). The reaction was further enhanced by heating at 60 °C for 1 h without stirring, a weakly acidic system at pH 5.4, and the addition of hydrogen peroxide or metal ions (Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ ). Interestingly, AA induction produces free radicals and changes in their content correlate with a decrease in XG viscosity. Moreover, removing dissolved oxygen by heating and nitrogen purging treatment effectively reduced AA-derived free radical levels and prevented the decrease in XG viscosity. The decrease in viscosity of XG caused by AA involved its free radicals generated through an oxygen-dependent pathway.

Exploring ways to efficiently and inexpensively exploit and transport high-viscosity and high-pour-point crude oil is very important, and use of silica nanoparticles (nano-SiO2) to reduce the pour point and viscosity of this oil is promising. For this purpose, we modified nano-SiO2 in two ways. First, we used the coupling agent KH570 to replace hydroxyl groups in nano-SiO2 with organic groups. Next, we used four monomers (octadecyl methacrylate, styrene, maleic anhydride, and acrylamide) for graft copolymerization of the modified nano-SiO2 to obtain a nano-SiO2 composite. This method of modifying the nano-SiO2 surface reduces the agglomeration tendency of unmodified nano-SiO2 and disperses the composite material in the organic solvent. A synthetic nanocomposite material could reduce the viscosity of heavy oil with different viscosities and pour points by more than 60%. It could also reduce the pour points of heavy oil by more than 10 °C, thus showing superiority over the traditional ethylene–vinyl acetate flow modifier.

A biomass-based catalyst for catalytic upgrading and viscosity reduction process of heavy oil was prepared. The experimental results showed the viscosity of oil sample reduced from 508800 mPa.s to 22230 mPa.s (50 ℃) with 0.2wt% biomass-based catalyst at 320 ℃ for 30 min, and the viscosity reduction was up to 95.63%. The content of resin was significantly reduced by 10.1% after reaction under the optimal conditions. Furthermore, composition analysis, FT-IR analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis of the biomass-based catalyst were characterized in detail. In addition, FT-IR analysis, elemental analysis and SEM analysis were employed to evaluate the properties of oil sample. Further, influence mechanism of biomass-based catalyst on catalytic upgrading process of heavy oil was expounded through viscosity change, SARA analysis, 1 H-NMR analysis, weight average molecular weight and average particle sizes analysis, and the above analysis results revealed that under the catalytic action of organic nickel salt, the presence of non-acidic components in the catalyst could improve the chemical structures of heavy compositions of oil sample. Finally, a possible schematic diagram of catalytic upgrading process was simply depicted in this work.

In this paper, rivet-like iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method for the first time. SEM and TEM results demonstrated that the as-prepared rivet-like nanoparticle consisted of two parts, a head part with an average size of 50 nm, and a tail one with a diameter of 20–40 nm and a length of ca . 100 nm. XRD result revealed that this nanoparticle had a dominant hematite phase and minor goethite phase. The rivet-like iron oxide nanoparticles exhibited higher catalytic activity for the upgrading of Shengli-oilfield extra heavy crude oil than the cubical α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles in the absence of hydrogen donors. In particular, owing to the site-rich surface of the catalyst, the viscosity of the Shengli extra heavy oil decreased from 244520 mPa∙s to 152000 mPa∙s (at 50 °C) in the presence of the 400 °C-treated nanoparticles after the reaction at 200 °C for 24 h. Higher exposure of (1 0 4) facet could possibly also account for the higher catalytic activity.

Due to the high viscosity and low fluidity of viscous crude oil, how to effectively recover spilled crude oil is still a major global challenge. Although solar thermal absorbers have made significant progress in accelerating oil recovery, its practical application is largely restricted by the variability of solar radiation intensity, which is influenced by external environmental factors. To address this issue, this study created a new composite fiber that not only possesses solar energy conversion and storage capabilities but also facilitates crude oil removal. PF@PAN@PEG was obtained by coaxial electrospinning processing, with PEG within PAN fibers, and a coating layer was applied to the fiber surface to impart oleophilicity and hydrophobicity. PF@PAN@PEG exhibited a high latent heat value (77.12 J/g), high porosity, and excellent photothermal conversion and oil storage capabilities, significantly reducing the viscosity of crude oil. PF@PAN@PEG can adsorb approximately 11.65 g/g of crude oil under sunlight irradiation. Notably, due to the encapsulation of PEG, PF@PAN@PEG can continuously maintain the crude oil at a phase change temperature by releasing latent heat under specific conditions, effectively reducing its viscosity with no PEG leakage at all. When solar light intensity varied, the crude oil collection efficiency increased by 21.99% compared to when no phase change material was added. This research offers a potential approach for the effective use of clean energy and the collection of viscous crude oil spill pollution.

Functional polymers play an increasingly significant role in oilfield development. Herein, the side-chain functionalized copolymer APVR was fabricated using functional monomer 2,6-bis(1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)pyridin-4-yl-methacrylate (BMP) with similar structure to the heavy components in crude oil and di-hexadecanol maleate (DHM) with long alkyl chain. 1 H NMR, FTIR and TGA analyses were employed to characterize the structure of APVR. Simultaneously, viscosity reduction performance and heavy oil displacement performance of APVR were also studied. For comparison, the copolymers P(AAB), P(AAD) and P(AA) containing one functional monomer and without functional monomer were also synthesized. The results showed that when the copolymer concentration is 2000 mg/L, the viscosity reduction rate (VRR) of APVR, P(AAB), P(AAD) and P(AA) is 93.1%, 84.3%, 82.4% and 65.4%, respectively. Furthermore, compared with water flooding, their ultimate recovery of heavy oil increased by 18.34%, 13.78%, 13.18% and 9.93%. The interaction mechanisms between APVR and heavy oil were studied using XRD, SEM, and molecular dynamic simulation. Due to their unique structure, BMP and DHM were able to permeate into the molecule structures of heavy oil, reducing the intermolecular forces between heavy components by forming supramolecular forces with asphaltene. Thus, they led to the loose stacking of asphaltene aggregates, making it easier for APVR to emulsify oil droplets due to its amphiphilic property. The copolymer APVR shows promising potential for reducing heavy oil viscosity and may have broad application prospects in heavy oil exploitation.

The increasing energy consumption has made heavy oil more and more important in world energy system . However, the exploitation of heavy oil is still very challenging due to the high viscosity. Catalysts which can effectively promote heavy oil aquathermolysis to reduce the viscosity are in urgent demand. In this work, a Ni-based nanocatalyst for heavy oil aquathermolysis is fabricated through a sol-gel method. Characterizations with SEM, TEM , XRD , XPS , and VSM indicate that the fabricated nanocatalyst is magnetic Ni 20 (NiO) 80 nanoparticles with diameter about 20 nm. The fabricated Ni 20 (NiO) 80 catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance in promoting heavy oil aquathermolysis with the assistance of tetralin . The composition analyses of heavy oil after Ni 20 (NiO) 80 -catalyzed aquathermolysis demonstrate that the contents of light compositions in oil increase significantly and those of heavy compositions decrease significantly, resulting in up to 86.47% oil viscosity reduction. This will greatly improve the recoverability of heavy oil. Moreover, as the catalyst is magnetic, it could be easily separated from the reaction mixture, which will minimize the effect of aquathermolysis catalyst on the refining of the recovered oil.

When applied to extra-heavy oil, conventional polymer surfactants exhibit poor efficacy in reducing viscosity and have limited adaptability. In this work, a novel amphiphilic polymer named PAADB was prepared by incorporating 2-acryloylamino-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), benzyldimethyl [2-[(1-oxoallyl) zoxy] propyl] ammonium chloride (DML), and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (BEM) into the main chain of acrylamide through free radical polymerization. PAADB exhibited outstanding interfacial activity, water-phase thickening ability, and emulsifying performance. The critical micelle concentration of PAADB was approximately 2500 mg/L, with a viscosity of 84.69 mPa·s at 50 °C. Additionally, interfacial tension experienced a notable decrease from 46.53 to 14.56 mN/m. At an optimal concentration of 4000 mg/L, PAADB reduced the viscosity of extra-heavy oil by over 92% across various temperatures and by more than 93% for different types of extra-heavy oil. PAADB demonstrated excellent emulsification ability and emulsion stability, effectively dispersing crude oil to create water-in-oil droplets measuring 35.33 μm in size. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulations further unveiled the viscosity reduction mechanism of PAADB. The hydrophilic groups within PAADB molecules are regularly distributed on the water interface, while the hydrophobic groups infiltrate the oil molecules to form a stable interfacial film. PAADB and asphaltene spontaneously form a sandwich structure, reducing intermolecular forces and disrupting the interlayer structure of asphaltene molecules. In general, this novel amphiphilic polymer demonstrates broad applicability and potential in extra-heavy oil recovery, providing valuable insights for the development of new heavy oil viscosity reducers (HOVRs).

The introduction of nanomaterials into oil-soluble viscosity-reducing agents has attracted attention because of the potential to reduce resistance during the injection process in oil recovery. In this paper, toluene was used as a solvent in nanosilica modification, and modified nanosilica with a uniform dispersion was obtained. A series of nanocomposite viscosity reducers was prepared by reacting different proportions of the modified nanosilica with styrene, butyl methacrylate, and acrylamide. Samples were prepared by mixing the modified nanoparticles with heavy crude oil and investigated with polarized light microscopy, rheological behavior tests, and viscoelasticity tests. The results show that the nanocomposites exhibit the special surface effects and nanoslip effects of nanoparticles and inhibit the formation of fractal aggregates of colloidal asphaltenes. As the amount of modified nanosilica increases, the viscosity-reducing effect improves. The viscoelastic tests indicate that the addition of the viscosity-reducing agent with the nanocomposites has a greater influence on the storage modulus G′ and the loss modulus G″ of the fluid than the addition of the polymer without nanoparticles. The results indicate that the viscosity-reducing agent can cause various degrees of damage to the internal structure of the heavy crude oil, and the viscosity reducers prepared using 500 and 600 ppm nanoparticles have the most significant effect on the viscosity reduction of the oil.

ABSTRACT Two catalysts, nano-sized cobalt-metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) and nickel (Ni)-MOF, were successfully prepared by the modification method. Tetralin (C 10 H 12 ) was used as the hydrogen donor for the catalytic cracking and hydrogenation modification study of the dehydrated crude oil from the Shengli Oilfield. The optimal reaction conditions were determined through orthogonal experiments, and the components of the crude oil and modified oil samples were analyzed. The results revealed that the nano-MOF catalysts were successfully prepared and exhibited high catalytic activity. They could catalyze the cracking of large molecules in heavy oil at mild temperatures (<300 °C), leading to the decomposition of the hydrogen donor. When the mass fraction of the catalyst was 0.2%, the mass fraction of the hydrogen donor was 1%, and the reaction temperature was 280 °C, the Ni-MOF showed the best catalytic viscosity reduction effect. It could reduce the viscosity of heavy oil at 50 °C from 15761.9 mPa·s to 1266.2 mPa·s, with a viscosity reduction rate of 91.97%. The modification effect of Co-MOF was the next best, which could reduce the viscosity of heavy oil to 2500.1 mPa·s with a viscosity reduction rate of 84.14%. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed a strong interaction force between the MOF surface and asphaltene molecules. In the process of heavy-oil catalytic hydrogenation, the nano-MOF catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity. On the one hand, the empty d orbitals outside the metal atoms in the catalyst could polarize the carbon atoms in the organic matter, accelerating the breaking of long chains. On the other hand, the metal atoms in the catalyst could bond with the carbon σ bonds, breaking the carbon–carbon bonds. This disrupted the structure of the recombined components in the crude oil, irreversibly reducing the viscosity of the heavy oil and improving its fluidity.
