Metal-based bacterial cellulose of sandwich nanomaterials for anti-oxidation electromagnetic interference shielding

Pengfei Lv,Wenzheng Xu,Dawei Li,Quan Feng,Yixin Yao,Zengyuan Pang,Lucian A. Lucia,Qufu Wei

In this work, bacterial cellulose was successively functionalized by magnetron sputtering and RF reactive sputtering with copper (Cu) and Al 2 O 3 to endow it with unique anti-oxidation electromagnetic shielding properties while concomitantly improving hydrophobic, mechanical, and thermal properties. The surface topographies and chemical properties of BC/Cu/Al 2 O 3 nanocomposites were examined by different analysis instruments to conclusively testify that metal-based nanoparticles were evenly deposited on the surfaces. This sandwich structure of the nanocomposites enhanced their thermal stability, hydrophobicity , mechanical properties , and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE). EMI effects of these nanocomposites were also investigated by the four-point probe, uniaxial testing machine and a vector network analyzer (VNA). The results indicated that the sandwich nanoscale materials showed good mechanical properties (41.3   Mpa) and excellent EMI shielding (65.3   dB).

Immobilization of collagen peptide on dialdehyde bacterial cellulose nanofibers via covalent bonds for tissue engineering and regeneration

Xiaoxiao Wen,Yudong Zheng,Jian Wu,Lu-Ning Wang,Zhenya Yuan,Jiang Peng,Haoye Meng

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an alternative nanostructured biomaterial to be utilized for a wide range of biomedical applications. Because of its low bioactivity, which restricted its practical application, collagen and collagen hydrolysate were usually composited into BC. It is necessary to develop a new method to generate covalent bonds between collagen and cellulose to improve the immobilization of collagen on BC. This study describes a facile dialdehyde BC/collagen peptide nanocomposite. BC was oxidized into dialdehyde bacterial cellulose (DBC) by regioselective oxidation, and then composited with collagen peptide (Col-p) via covalent bonds to form Schiff’s base type compounds, which was demonstrated by the results of microstructures, contact angle, Col-p content, and peptide-binding ratio. The peptide-binding ratio was further affected by the degree of oxidation, pH value, and zeta potential. In vitro desorption measurement of Col-p suggested a controlled release mechanism of the nanocomposite. Cell tests indicated that the prepared DBC/Col-p composite was bioactive and suitable for cell adhesion and attachment. This work demonstrates that the DBC/Col-p composite is a promising material for tissue engineering and regeneration.

Isothermal Crystallization and Rheology Properties of Isotactic Polypropylene/Bacterial Cellulose Composite

Bo Wang,Fu-hua Lin,Xiang-yang Li,Zhong-wei Zhang,Xiao-rong Xue,Si-xiao Liu,Xu-ran Ji,Qian Yu,Zheng-qiu Yuan,Xin-de Chen,Jun Luo

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a new kind of cellulose with great potential in enhancing preparation of isotactic Polypropylene (iPP) composites, which have been found with excellent performance. However, the interface compatibility between BC and iPP is poor. In this study, iPP/BC composites were prepared by solution mixing. Esterification modified BC (CO) and Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) added as a compatibilizer was both used to improve the interfacial compatibility of the iPP/BC composites. The rheology and isothermal crystallization behavior of the composites was tested and discussed. The result shows that the complex viscosity and storage modulus of the composite significantly increase in the rule iPP, iPP/BC2, iPP/CO2, and M-iPP/BC3, which indicates that the compatibility of the composite increases as this rule. According to the isothermal crystallization kinetics result, the crystal growth mode of iPP was not affected by the addition of BC and the interfacial compatibility. The spherulite growth rate of the iPP/BC composite increases with increasing crystallization temperature. Especially, the value decreases as the same rule with the complex viscosity and storage modulus of the composite at the same isothermal crystallization temperature. These results suggest that the interface compatibility of iPP/BC composites is greatly improved and the interface compatibility of the M-iPP/BC3 is better than the iPP/CO2.Keywords:Isotactic polypropylene;bacterial cellulose;rheology;isothermal crystallization

In-situ CBM3-modified bacterial cellulose film with improved mechanical properties

Yena Liu,Qiuping Ran,Jiaqi Guo,Wenyuan Zhu,Rani Bushra,Xuguo Duan,Yang Huang,Zhengbing Jiang,Mohammad Rizwan Khan,Yongcan Jin,Huining Xiao,Junlong Song

Cellulose materials have poor wet strength and are susceptible to acidic or basic environments. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to modify bacterial cellulose (BC) with a genetically engineered Family 3 Carbohydrate-Binding Module (CBM3). To assess the effect of BC films, water adsorption rate (WAR), water holding capacity (WHC), water contact angle (WCA), and mechanical and barrier properties were determined. The results showed that CBM3-modified BC film exhibited significant strength and ductility improvement, reflecting improved mechanical properties of the film. The excellent wet strength (both in the acidic and basic environment), bursting strength, and folding endurance of CBM3-BC films were due to the strong interaction between CBM3 and fiber. The toughness of CBM3-BC films reached 7.9, 28.0, 13.3, and 13.6 MJ/m 3 , which were 6.1, 1.3, 1.4, and 3.0 folds over the control for conditions of dry, wet, acidic, and basic, respectively. In addition, its gas permeability was reduced by 74.3 %, and folding times increased by 56.8 % compared with the control. The synthesized CBM3-BC films may hold promise for future applications in food packaging, paper straw, battery separator, and other fields. Finally, the in situ modification strategy used to BC can be successfully applied in other functional modifications for BC materials.

Superelastic and superflexible cellulose aerogels for thermal insulation and oil/water separation

Weikang Ke,Fang Ge,Xiaolong Shi,Yutao Zhang,Tianyu Wu,Xi Zhu,Yaming Cheng,Yiqian Shi,Zhongkai Wang,Liang Yuan,Youxian Yan

Aerogels with low thermal conductivity and high adsorption capacity present a promising solution to curb water pollution caused by organic reagents as well as mitigate heat loss. Although aerogels exhibiting good adsorption capacity and thermal insulation have been reported, materials with mechanical integrity, high flexibility and shear resistance still pose a formidable task. Here, we produced bacterial cellulose-based ultralight multifunctional hybrid aerogels by using freeze-drying followed by chemical vapor deposition silylation method. The hybrid aerogels displayed a low density of 10–15 mg/cm 3 , high porosity exceeding 99.1 %, low thermal conductivity (27.3–29.2 mW/m . K) and superior hydrophobicity (water contact angle>120 o ). They also exhibited excellent mechanical properties including superelasticity, high flexibility and shear resistance. The hybrid aerogels demonstrated high heat shielding efficiency when used as an insulating material. As a selective oil absorbent, the hybrid aerogels exhibit a maximum adsorption capacity of up to approximately 156 times its own weight and excellent recoverability. Especially, the aerogel's highly accessible porous microstructure results in an impressive flux rate of up to 162 L/h . g when used as a filter in a continuous oil-water separator to isolate n-hexane-water mixtures. This work presents a novel endeavor to create high-performance, sustainable, reusable, and adaptable multifunctional aerogels.

Nano-sized fibrils dispersed from bacterial cellulose grafted with chitosan

Xu Liu,Yang Wang,Zheng Cheng,Jie Sheng,Rendang Yang

Bacterial cellulose is an attractive material due to its outstanding biocompatibility, nanometer size and high purity, but the difficulty of dispersing has restricted its wide applications. In this study, chitosan was grafted onto bacterial cellulose by Schiff base reaction, and then obtained the nano-sized fibrils by ultrasonic dispersion process. Different concentrations of NaIO 4 with various time and temperature were applied, and the maximum grafting amount of chitosan was 12.38%. The obtained products were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. From the dispersibility and stability behavior research, the suspension containing chitosan was more uniform and showed better acid and temperature stability. It can also be observed in SEM and TEM images that the bacterial cellulose were dispersed into single ones and the diameter of the isolated fibril was 30–80 nm.

Bacterial cellulose production by a strain of Komagataeibacter rhaeticus isolated from residual loquat

Ye Jianbin,Li Jianqing,Wang Qiuhui,Wang Xiangjiang,Wang Shouan,Wang Honglin,Xu Jia

Abstract In this study, loquat extract was selected as a promising substrate for bacterial cellulose (BC) production. A new BC-producing bacterial strain was isolated from residual loquat and identified as Komagataeibacter rhaeticus . BC production with different carbon sources and with loquat extract was investigated. Among all tested carbon sources, glucose was demonstrated to be the best substrate for BC production by K. rhaeticus , with up to 7.89 g/L dry BC obtained under the optimal initial pH (5.5) and temperature (28 °C) with 10 days of fermentation. The total sugar and individual sugars were investigated in different loquat extracts, in which fructose, glucose, and sucrose were the three main sugars. When loquat extract was prepared with a solid‒liquid (S-L) ratio of 2:1, the concentrations of glucose, fructose, and sucrose were 7.91 g/L, 9.31 g/L, and 2.84 g/L, respectively. The BC production obtained from loquat extract was higher than that of other carbon sources except glucose, and 6.69 g/L dry BC was obtained from loquat extract with an S-L ratio of 2:1. After BC production, all sugars substantially decreased, with the utilization of glucose, fructose, and sucrose reaching 93.9%, 87.9%, and 100%, respectively. These results suggested that the different sugars in loquat extract were all carbon sources participating in BC production by K. rhaeticus . Structural and physicochemical properties were investigated by SEM, TGA, XRD, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The results showed that the structural, chemical group, and water holding capacity of BC obtained from loquat extract were similar to those of BC obtained from glucose, but the crystallinity and thermal stability of BC were higher than those of BC from mannose and lactose but lower than those of BC from glucose and fructose. Key points A new BC-producing strain was isolated and identified as Komagataeibacter rhaeticus. Loquat extract is an alternative substrate for BC production. The BC obtained from loquat extract owns advanced physicochemical properties . Graphical Abstract

Synthesis of High Specific Surface Lithium-Ion Sieve Templated by Bacterial Cellulose for Selective Adsorption of Li+

Xi Zhang,Xudong Zheng,Tongtong Xu,Yuzhe Zhang,Guomeng Li,Zhongyu Li

In recent years, with the development of batteries, ceramics, glass and other industries, the demand for lithium has increased rapidly. Due to the rich lithium resources in seawater and salt-lake brine, the question of how to selectively adsorb and separate lithium ions from such brine has attracted the attention and research of many scholars. The Li-ion sieve stands out from other methods thanks to its excellent special adsorption and separation performance. In this paper, mesoporous titanium dioxide and lithium hydroxide were prepared by hydrothermal reaction using bacterial cellulose as a biological template. After calcination at 600 °C, spinel lithium titanium oxide Li2TiO3was formed. The precursor was eluted with HCl eluent to obtain H2TiO3. The lithium titanate were characterized by IR, SEM and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption properties of H2TiO3were studied by adsorption pH, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm and competitive adsorption. The results show that H2TiO3has a single-layer chemical adsorption process, and has a good adsorption effect on lithium ions at pH 11.0, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 35.45 mg g−1. The lithium-ion sieve can selectively adsorb Li+, and its partition coefficient is 2242.548 mL g−1. It can be predicted that the lithium-ion sieve prepared by biological template will have broad application prospects. Keywords:lithium ion sieve;bacterial cellulose;hydrothermal method;titanium;selective adsorption

Glycerol solutions of highly concentrated biomineral counter-ions towards water-responsive mineralization: Demonstration on bacterial cellulose and its application in hard tissue repair

Zhao Yunfei,Liu Xiaohao,Zhou Zhi,Feng Chaobo,Luo Nan,Yan Jiajun,Tan Shuo,Lu Yang,Chen Feng,Lu Bing-Qiang,He Shisheng

Mineralization has found widespread use in the fabrication of composite biomaterials for hard tissue regeneration. The current mineralization processes are mainly carried out in neutral aqueous solutions of biomineral counter-ions (a pair of cation and anion that form the corresponding minerals at certain conditions), which are stable only at very low concentrations. This typically results in inefficient mineralization and weak control over biomineral formation. Here, we find that, in the organic solvent glycerol, a variety of biomineral counter-ions (e.g., Ca/PO 4 , Ca/CO 3 , Ca/SO 4 , Mg/PO 4 , or Fe/OH) corresponding to distinct biominerals at significantly high concentrations (up to hundreds-fold greater than those of simulated body fluid (SBF)) are able to form translucent and stable solutions (mineralizing solution of highly concentrated counter-ions (MSCIs)), and mineralization can be triggered upon them with external solvents (e.g., water or ethanol). Furthermore, with pristine bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane as a model, we demonstrate an effective and controllable mineralization performance of MSCIs on organic substrates. This approach not only forms the homogeneous biominerals on the BC fibers and in the interspaces, but also provides regulations over mineralization rate, mineral content, phase, and dopants. The resulting mineralized BC membranes (MBCs) exhibit high cytocompatibility and favor the proliferation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSC). Following this, we prepare a mineralized bone suture (MBS) from MBC for non-weight bearing bone fixation, which then is tested on a rabbit median sternotomy model. It shows firm fixation of the rabbit sternum without causing discernible toxicity or inflammatory response. This study, by extending the mineralization to the organic solution system of highly concentrated counter-ions, develops a promising strategy to design and build targeted mineral-based composites.

Enhanced fresh walnut preservation using chitosan films reinforced with cinnamon essential oil and bacterial cellulose pickering emulsion

Chen Chen,Suyun Deng,Huaixiang Tian,Haiyan Yu,Juan Huang,Xinman Lou,Haibin Yuan

Fresh walnuts are prone to browning and microbial spoilage post-harvest due to their high water content and enzyme activity. Although chitosan-based preservation materials shows great potential for the preservation of fruits and vegetables, their effectiveness is hindered by limited antibacterial, antioxidant, and mechanical properties. In this study, a novel biomass composite film was developed by integrating bacterial cellulose (BC) stabilized cinnamon essential oil Pickering emulsion (CEO-BC-PEs) into chitosan (CS) through hydrogen bonding. The physicochemical characteristics, biodegradability, antioxidant capacity, and antibacterial properties of the CS-BC-CEO composite film were evaluated, and its preservation effect on fresh walnuts was assessed. Results indicated that hydrogen bonding between the CEO-BC-PEs and the CS matrix significantly improved the composite film's thermal stability, mechanical strength, and barrier properties. Specifically, the incorporation of CEO-BC-PEs enhanced the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) by 51.24% and 28.79%, respectively, while reducing water vapor permeability (168.19 mg mm·kPa −1 ·h −1 ·m −2 ) and ultraviolet light transmittance (<75%). Additionally, the film demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity (up to 60%), antibacterial efficacy (up to 65%), and biodegradability. When used for preserving fresh walnuts, the composite film effectively reduced nutrient loss, delayed lipid oxidation, and suppressed the activity of browning-related enzymes, thereby significantly extending the shelf life of the walnuts. These findings highlight the potential of the CS-BC-CEO composite film as a promising solution for fresh walnuts preservation and suggest its applicability in developing sustainable active biomass packaging materials.

Facile fabrication of sulfonated bacterial cellulose-silane composite aerogels via in suit polymerization for enhanced oil/water separation performance

Chao Hu,Jingshun Zhuang,Yuanyuan Xia,Jinchao Zhang,Xuejin Zhang

Cellulose-based aerogels have emerged as highly promising materials for oil-water separation because of their highly porous nature, low bulk density, cost-effectiveness, and functional performance. In this study, a novel, robust, and hydrophobic bacterial cellulose aerogel (HBCA) was reported for highly efficient oil/water separation, which was formed by incorporating methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) into sulfonated nano-fibrillated bacterial cellulose (SNBC) matrix through freeze-drying method. The structural integrity of the SNBC/MTMS aerogel was ensured by its three-dimensional linked network structure. The resultant aerogel demonstrated superior hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 152.4°. As an oil-absorbing material, it selectively adsorbed different types of oils and organic solvents, with a saturation adsorption capacity ranging from 42.14 to 85.37 g·g −1 . Additionally, this composite aerogel demonstrated outstanding separation efficiency (98.48 %) in continuous oil-water mixture processes, suggesting promising potential applications in the treatment of industrial oil pollution and oil spill accidents. This study indicates that the proposed HBCA with sulfonated nano-fibrillated bacterial cellulose is a potential and effective material for addressing environmental challenges related to oil contamination.

An Electric-Magnetic Dual-Gradient Composite Film Comprising MXene, Hollow Fe3O4, and Bacterial Cellulose for High-Performance EMI Shielding and Infrared Camouflage

Mengxin Liu,Haoran Zhang,Xinmeng Huang,Ziyi Zhang,Kunlai Zhang,Zhenwu Chen,Jintang Zhou,Lei Pan

It is crucial to develop electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with high shielding efficiency (SE) and reduced reflection to mitigate the secondary pollution caused by electromagnetic waves (EMWs). Herein, a novel multilayer assembly strategy inspired by the structure of “Turkish dessert—Baklava” is proposed to introduce magnetic hollow Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres (HFO) and conductive MXene nanosheets into a bacterial cellulose (BC) network. Through a layer-by-layer vacuum filtration approach, a composite BC/MXene/HFO film with a controllable electric-magnetic dual-gradient structure is achieved. The construction of electric-magnetic dual gradients alleviates the impedance mismatch at the air-film interface, resulting in reduced reflectivity toward EMWs, while the unique hollow structure of HFO facilitates the “absorption–reflection–reabsorption” process of EMWs. Consequently, the as-prepared composite film (0.35 mm thickness) exhibits an extraordinary EMI SE of 67.6 dB and a reflection SE as low as 5.1 dB. Furthermore, it also demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties, efficient thermal management, and Joule heating capabilities, as well as remarkable passive and active infrared camouflage performances. This study offers an innovative approach to achieve less reflection and more absorption of EMWs, and expands the application scope of EMI shielding materials in precision electronics, aerospace, and military equipment fields.
