Assembling polymer electrolytes (PEs) with lithium metal anodes is a promising strategy to address safety and specific capacity concerns. Molecular design on conductive polymer matrices avoids inherent high crystallinity, poor ion transport, and combustion drawbacks by adjusting the chain structure and functional groups. However, conventional structural modulation methods are difficult to conduct via in situ polymerization and cell assembly, thus hampering the further performance enhancement of PEs in lithium batteries. Herein, we report a simple aza-Michael addition method induced by lithium salts for designing and fabricating high-performance PEs. This method fulfills the in situ structure modulation of polyether-based PEs without any introduction of non-electrolytic components. The obtained polyether electrolytes exhibit a more amorphous cross-linked structure, leading to a favorable medium for ion migration and excellent flexibility. In addition, the introduction of C–N bonds imparts excellent non-flammability to the material as well as the ability to interact with sulfolane. Hence, the in situ-constructed gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is characterized by a high ionic conductivity (1.76 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 30 °C) and excellent interface stability with the electrodes. The assembled Li/LiFePO4 (LFP) battery based on this newly designed GPE exhibits a high initial specific discharge capacity and a good rate performance (112.7 mAh g–1 at 5 C). Long-term stability was also demonstrated, with a capacity retention of 86.8% after 500 cycles at 0.5 C.

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries hold great promise as the next-generation cost-effective energy storage systems. However, their practical implementation is still plagued by the low reversible capacity of a bulk-sized commercial sulfur cathode with low Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability. Here, we report a highly stable room temperature Na-S battery using a facile-processed, nanocarbon-promoted, bulk-sized commercial sulfur cathode and a polymer electrolyte. This processed nanocarbon possesses a high binding affinity to sulfur and polysulfides, largely facilitating the sulfur reaction kinetics and leading to high reversible capacity. Meanwhile, by applying a thin coating of the facile-processed nanocarbon on the polymer electrolyte, dead sulfur formation can be avoided, contributing to greatly enhanced capacity retention. Our Na-S battery delivers a reversible capacity of >700 mAh g −1 with near-100% Coulombic efficiency and the ultrahigh capacity retention of 98.2% at 0.2C after 200 cycles.

Self-healability and cold-resistance will greatly improve the reliability of an energy-storage device in case of physical damage and subzero environment, which bring higher and higher requirement to electrolyte. Herein, a multifunctional supramolecular gel polymer electrolyte is prepared, which includes the first cross-linking network between PVA and TA through hydrogen bond cross-linking, and the second PVA network via the freezing-thawing cycle. The synergistic effects of two networks endow the gel polymer electrolyte with outstanding mechanical properties such as high tensile strengths (1.19 MPa), elongations (18.35 mm mm −1 ), self-recovery and excellent self-healability. Moreover, a high conductivity of gel polymer electrolyte is also obtained. A supercapacitor based on the gel polymer electrolyte can significantly restore its electrochemical performances after 10 cutting-healing cycles without external treatment at room temperature. In addition, the supercapacitor presents great controllability and can be tailored into different patterns without property deterioration. Besides, even at −20 °C, the SC is able to maintain 68.3% of its room temperature capacitance. The investigation offers a facile and versatile strategy to construct an intrinsically self-healable and cold-resistant energy-storage device which has potential applications for portable and wearable electronics, smart apparels or flexible robots, and so on.

Flexible interfaces between Si anodes and composite electrolytes consisting of poly(propylene carbonates) (PPCs) and garnets have been fabricated. The solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) of PPC/garnet/LiTFSI show the conductivity of 4.2 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature . Their combination with the Si layer anodes allows great alleviation of internal stress resulting from the large volume variation during lithiation and delithiation process of Si anodes. As a result, the Si/SPE/Li cells exhibit 2520 mAh g −1 , 2260 mAh g −1 , 1902 mAh g −1 , 1342 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C, and 1 C, respectively. Furthermore, with such compatible and stable interfaces of Si/SPE and the LiFePO 4 cathodes in solid-state batteries , the specific capacity of 2296 mAh g −1 in terms of Si is obtained, which remains 82.6% after 100 cycles at room temperature and 0.1 C. The results here indicate that constructing of flexible interfaces between Si anodes and SPEs is a promising strategy to develop high performance solid-state batteries .

Developing a solid polymer electrolyte with superior flame retardancy and lithium-ion transportation properties is still a challenge. Herein, an intrinsic silicon/phosphorus co-flame retardant polymer solid electrolyte was prepared by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) co-polymerized with silicon and phosphorus-containing monomers. Due to the synergistic flame-retardant effect of silicon and phosphorus elements, this polymer electrolyte exhibits excellent thermal stability and flame resistance. Moreover, the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte at 25 °C is as high as 2.98 × 10−5S/cm when the mass ratio of LiN(SO2CF3)2(LiTFSI) and the prepared polymer electrolyte is 10:1. What is more, the LiFePO4/Li all-solid-state battery assembled with this solid electrolyte can work stably at a high temperature of 60 °C and exhibits a specific capacity of 129.2 mAh/g at 0.2 C after 100 cycles, providing a promising application prospect for high-safety lithium-ion batteries. Keywords:polymer electrolyte;silicon/phosphorus co-flame retardant;all-solid-state;lithium-ion battery

Polymer electrolytes are envisioned to be promising alternatives to their liquid counterparts in lithium-ion batteries as they are able to address electrolyte inflammability and leakage issues. However, polymer electrolytes usually suffer from cracks or breakage, which could lead to short circuits and bring severe safety issues. Herein, we propose a paradigm to address these problems in which the polymer electrolyte is formed by a physically cross-linked network via ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) containing brush-like poly(ethylene glycol) chains. The formed novel polymer electrolyte is flexible and able to provide fast intrinsic self-healability and high stretchability. It can heal the cut damage within 2 hours under ambient conditions without any external stimulus and can be stretched to more than 20 times its length without breaking. Furthermore, the novel polymer electrolyte exhibits excellent interfacial stability with electrodes, resulting in high performance batteries with stable reversible electrochemical reaction and cycling.

In this study, novel ionic liquid-incorporated Zn-ion conducting polymer electrolyte membranes containing polymer matrix poly (vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (EMITf), along with zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate Zn(Tf)2, are prepared and investigated. It is ascertained that the optimal membrane ILPE-Zn-4 (the mass ratio of EMITf:Zn(Tf)2:PVDF-HFP is 0.4:0.4:1), with abundant nanopores, exhibits a high amorphousness. At room temperature, the optimized electrolyte membrane offers a good value of ionic conductivity (~1.44 × 10−4S cm−1), with a wide electrochemical stability window (~4.14 V). Moreover, the electrolyte membrane can sustain a high thermal decomposition temperature (~305 °C), and thus its mechanical performance is sufficient for practical applications. Accordingly, the ionic liquid-incorporated Zn-ion conducting polymer electrolyte could be a potential candidate for Zn-based energy storage applications. Keywords:polymer electrolyte;Zn-ion conducting;ionic liquid;ionic conductivity

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are seen as the key component in the development of solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) by virtue of their good processability and flexibility. However, poor mechanical strength, low room-temperature lithium-ion (Li-ion) conductivity and unsatisfactory interfacial compatibility with electrodes limit their practical application. In this work, a composite electrolyte consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride and polyvinylidene carbonate with a Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12(LLZTO) active filler (PFPC: LLZTO-SPE) is reported to achieve excellent ionic conductivity (4.25 × 10−4S cm−1at 30 °C), a wide electrochemical window (>4.6 V), a high Li-ion transference number (tLi+= 0.49) and good interfacial compatibility with the electrode. Incorporating LLZTO as an active filler not only increases the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, but also homogenizes Li-ion flux and stabilizes the electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby preventing lithium dendrites from piercing the electrolyte. As a result, Li/Li symmetrical cells using PFPC: LLZTO-SPEs deliver more than 800 h of cyclability at 0.1 mA cm−2and a high critical current density (CCD) of 2.6 mA cm−2. The assembled Li/PFPC: LLZTO/LFP SSLBs achieve 87% capacity retention after 150 cycles at 0.2 C and 89% capacity retention for 100 cycles at 0.5 C. This work inspires new insights into designing high-performance SPEs.Keywords:LLZTO;in-situ polymerization;solid polymer electrolytes;solid-state lithium batteries

The isolated inorganic particles within composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) are not correlated to the Li + transfer network, resulting in the polymer dominating the low ionic conductivity of CPEs. Therefore, we developed novel quasi-solid-state CPEs of a Ce-doped Na super ion conductors (NASICON) Na 1.3+ x Al 0.3 Ce x Ti 1.7− x (PO 4 ) 3 (NCATP) chemically coupled poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/Li-bis(trifluoromethanes-ulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) matrix. A strong interaction between Ce 3+ from NCATP and TFSI − anion from the polymer matrix contributes to the fast Li + transportation at the interface. The PVDF-HFP/NCATP CPEs exhibit an ionic conductivity of 2.16 × 0 −3 S cm −1 and a Li + transference number of 0.88. A symmetric Li/Li cell with NCATP-integrated CPEs at 0.1 mA cm −2 presents outstanding cycling stability over 2000 h at 25 °C. The quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries of Li/CPEs/LiFePO 4 at 2 C after 400 cycles and Li/CPEs/LiCoO 2 at 0.2 C after 120 cycles deliver capacities of 100 and 152 mAh g −1 at 25 °C, respectively.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are candidate schemes for meeting the safety and energy density needs of advanced lithium-based battery because of their improved mechanical and electrochemical stability compared to traditional liquid electrolytes. However, low ionic conductivity and side reactions occurring in traditional high-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs) hinder their practical applications. Here, amino-modified metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66-NH 2 ) with abundant defects as multifunctional fillers in the polyurethane based SPEs achieve the collaborative promotion of the mechanical strength and room temperature ionic conductivity. The surface modified amino groups serve as anchoring points for oxygen atoms of polymer chains, forming a firmly hydrogen-bond interface with polycarbonate-based polyurethane frameworks. The rich interfaces between UiO-66-NH 2 and polymers dramatically decrease the crystallization of polymer chains and reduce ion transport impedance, which markedly boosted the ionic conductivity to 2.1 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 with a high Li + transference numbers of 0.71. As a result, LiFePO 4 ∣SPEs∣Li cells exhibit prominent cyclability for 700 cycles under 0.5 C with 96.5% capacity retention. The LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622)∣SPEs∣Li cells deliver excellent long-term lifespan for 260 cycles with a high capacity retention of 91.9% and high average Coulombic efficiency (98.5%) under ambient conditions. This simple and effective hybrid SPE design strategy sheds a milestone significance light for high-voltage Li-metal batteries.

The quest for next-generation energy storage systems has led to the development of high-voltage all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), which promise unprecedented energy density and safety. However, the challenge lies in creating of a robust electrolyte that can meet high room temperature ionic conductivity, Li-ion transference number and a wide electrochemical stability window (ESW) while maintaining flexibility and compatibility with lithium metal anodes. Here, novel polyurethane-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) have been successfully fabricated by the cross-linking reaction of poly(1,5-dioxepan-2-one) diols (poly(ether-ester) soft segment) and hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (hard segment) (PDH) blending with inorganic NASICON-type ceramic fillers Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (PDH@LATP). The resulting CPE exhibits an impressive ionic conductivity of 1.65 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature and a Li-ion transference number of 0.63, which is attributed to the amorphous structure of PDH and the formation of an interconnected ionic pathway by the inorganic filler. The incorporation of LATP also improve the ESW of CPE to 5.3 V while maintaining good mechanical properties. Therefore, the assembled LiFePO 4 /PDH@LATP/Li batteries displayed low interfacial resistance, Li dendrite suppression, high specific capacity and excellent cyclic performance. The high-voltage LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 /PDH@LATP/Li batteries also exhibits good cycling performance and durability. The design principles and materials presented herein provide a blueprint for the next wave of ASSLMBs.

Carbonyl-containing polymers have been considered promising candidates as hosts in solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) due to the reasonable chelating coordination with Li+, better antioxidation for high-voltage cathodes, and higher ion transference number compared with polyether SPEs. In this work, four polyesters of poly(octamethylene succinate), poly(hexmethylene succinate) (PHS), poly(butylene succinate), and polycaprolactone were investigated. In these SPEs with different −C═O/–CH2– ratios, PHS had the highest conductivity (σ) of 1.24 × 10–4 S/cm because of the excellent ability to deionize bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) up to 88.3 ± 3.2% at 70 °C and the lowest activation energy of Li+ ionic conduction. The effect of Li+/–C═O ratios (r) on the ionic conductivity can be clarified into low-, middle-, and high-concentrated regions. The decrease of PHS crystallinity due to LiTFSI solvation provided ion transport paths and mainly contributed to the improvement of ionic conductivity in the middle-concentrated region, while the solvation degree dominantly facilitated ionic conduction in the high-concentrated region and at higher temperatures. By combining the DFT simulation and polymer thermal analysis, we found the transition of Li+ coordination from multichain to single-chain bindings provided more flexible segment movement. It also proved that the sequence design of active groups in a polymer chain would be a promising strategy for stable and high-performance SPEs.
