Thermal stability and pathways for the oxidation of four 3-phenyl-2-propene compounds

Chang Yu,Min Liang,Su-Yi Dai,Hai-Jun Cheng,Li Ma,Fang Lai,Xiong-Min Liu,Wei-Guang Li

Cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol, β-methylstyrene and cinnamic acid are four important biomass 3-phenyl-2-propene compounds. In the field of perfume and organic synthesis, their thermal stability and oxidation pathways deserve attention. This paper reports a new attempt to investigate the thermal stability and reactivity by a custom-designed mini closed pressure vessel test (MCPVT). The pressure and temperature behaviors were measured by MCPVT under nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere. The temperature of initial oxygen absorption (Ta) and rapid oxidation (TR) were calculated. The results showed that four 3-phenyl-2-propene compounds were stable under nitrogen atmosphere. The Ta of cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol, β-methylstyrene, and cinnamic acid was 271.25 K, 292.375 K, 323.125 K, and 363.875 K, and their TR was 301.125 K, 332.75 K, 357.91 K, and 385.375 K, respectively. The oxidation reactivity order was derived to be cinnamaldehyde > cinnamyl alcohol > β-methylstyrene > cinnamic acid. The oxidation kinetics were determined using n versus time (n–t) plots, which showed a second-order reaction. Peroxide was determined by iodimetry, and the oxidation products were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that the peroxide value of cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol, β-methylstyrene, and cinnamic acid reached 18.88, 15.07, 9.62, and 4.24 mmol kg−1 at 373 K for 6 h, respectively. The common oxidation products of four 3-phenyl-2-propene compounds were benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, and epoxide, which resulted from the carbon–carbon double bond oxidation. The substituents' oxidation products were obtained from the oxidation of cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol, and β-methylstyrene. In particular, the difference is that no oxidation products of the carboxyl group of cinnamic acid were detected. The common oxidation products of the four 3-phenyl-2-propene compounds were benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, and epoxide, which resulted from the carbon–carbon double bond oxidation. The substituents' oxidation products were caught in the oxidation of cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol, and β-methylstyrene. In particular, the difference is that no oxidation products of the carboxyl group of cinnamic acid were detected. According to the complex oxidation products, important insights into the oxidation pathways were provided.

Intrinsic antibacterial photopolymerization 3D-printed thermosets from citronellol and cinnamyl alcohol: Synthesis and properties

Yidong Wu,Dan Hong,Shijie Qiu,Yi Fang,Yabin Zhu

As concerns about personal health continue to escalate, there is an urgent need to innovate the development and production of photopolymeric 3D printing thermoset materials with inherent antibacterial properties and high elongation, paving the way for significant advances in 3D printing technology. In this work, two acrylate compounds (CMA and CAMA)with inherent antibacterial properties were synthesized using renewable monomers derived from citronellol and cinnamyl alcohol. The chemical structures of the two acrylate compounds were verified via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and 1 H NMR. The addition of these compounds to the photopolymeric 3D printing resin system can facilitate the production of 3D printed thermoset materials with inherent antibacterial properties. The mechanical and antibacterial properties of photopolymeric 3D printing thermosets were assessed utilizing tensile tests and oscillation methods. The results show that the addition of CMA and CAMA can significantly improve the fracture elongation and antibacterial performance of photopolymeric 3D printing thermosets. The improved systems exhibited the highest antibacterial rate (94.2 % and 98.9 %, respectively), and fracture productivities (47 % and 50 %, respectively). These results highlight the significant impact of integrating CMA and CAMA to enhance the toughness and antibacterial effects of photopolymeric 3D printing systems.

An Effective Pt-Cu/SiO2 Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde

Dong Wang,Yujun Zhu

The bimetal catalyst Pt-Cu/SiO2 was prepared by the impregnation method. Its catalytic performance was investigated by the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. Pt-Cu/SiO2 exhibited much higher selectivity (64.1%) to cinnamyl alcohol than Pt/SiO2 (3.7%), while they showed similar conversion of cinnamaldehyde. This enhancement was attributed to the increase in the amount of the Pt0 species on the Pt-Cu/SiO2 surface, which is derived from the interaction between Pt and Cu revealed by XRD and XPS.

Effect of Carbon Supported Pt Catalysts on Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde

Qing Han,Yunfei Liu,Dong Wang,Fulong Yuan,Xiaoyu Niu,Yujun Zhu

Selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is of both fundamental and industrial interest. It is of great significance to evaluate the possible differences between different supports arising from metal dispersion and electronic effects, in terms of activity and selectivity. Herein, Pt catalysts on different carbon supports including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and reduced graphene oxides (RGO) were developed by a simple wet impregnation method. The resultant catalysts were well characterized by XRD, Raman, N2 physisorption, TEM, and XPS analysis. Applied in the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, 3.5 wt% Pt/CNT shows much higher selectivity towards cinnamyl alcohol (62%) than 3.5 wt% Pt/RGO@SiO2 (48%). The enhanced activity can be ascribed to the high graphitization degree of CNTs and high density of dispersed Pt electron cloud.

Meng Zhang,Menglan Dou,Yingying Xia,Zhan Hu,Beijing Zhang,Yongxia Bai,Jia Xie,Qifeng Liu,Changping Xie,Dadong Lu,Shuai Hou,Jianguo He,Jun Tao,Ranfeng Sun

In the current work, a series of 1-trifluoromethyl cinnamyl alcohol derivatives were designed and synthesized and their antifungal activities were evaluated. The bioassay result showed that most compounds exhibited excellent antifungal activity in vitro at 10 μg mL–1. Next, photostable and easily synthesized compound 2 with broad-spectrum antifungal activity in vitro was selected as a potential candidate to evaluate its antibacterial and antifungal activities. The EC50 values of compound 2 against eight fungal plant pathogens in vitro ranged from 3.806 to 17.981 μg mL–1; at the same time, compound 2 could effectively control Podosphaera xanthii, Odium heveae Steinm, Puccinia striiformis West, and Puccinia sorghi in pot experiments. In addition, compound 2 exhibited excellent antibacterial activities in vitro and in vivo against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. Furthermore, the absorption and translocation of compound 2 in wheat plants were determined by the high-performance liquid chromatography method. The result showed that compound 2 could be translocated acropetally as well as basipetally in wheat plants. Finally, it was found that compound 2 had no cross-resistance with carbendazim, azoxystrobin, and boscalid.

NiZr/N-doped TiO2/Ti3C2 catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde: effect of N-doping of TiO2

Ms. Menghan Li,Xuan Luo,Tongming Su,Xinling Xie,Hongbing Ji,Zuzeng Qin

Graphical Preparation of NiZr/N-doped TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 catalyst for catalytic cinnamaldehyde (CAL) hydrogenation by KBH 4 reduction. N-doped TiO 2 on Ti 3 C 2 , and N-doping substituted O in the TiO 2 lattice to create oxygen vacancies on the surface, increase the surface acidity, and adsorb C=O bonds, which resulted in high cinnamaldehyde conversion and cinnamyl alcohol (COL) selectivity after reaction 8 h. An NiZr/N-doped TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 catalyst was prepared by KBH 4 reduction for cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation. Characterization results showed that the synthesis of N-doped TiO 2 on Ti 3 C 2 and the uniform dispersion of TiO 2 on the Ti 3 C 2 surface increased the specific surface area of NiZr/Ti 3 C 2 by 164.4 m 2 /g. N-doping at a level of 19.03 % was used to replace O in the TiO 2 lattice; the Ti−O−Ti peak in the XPS spectrum of the undoped catalyst was shifted by 0.3 eV in the spectrum of the doped catalyst; as a result, there was a 15.40 % increase in the number of surface oxygen vacancies of the NiZr/Ti 3 C 2 catalyst. The synthesis of N-doped TiO 2 on Ti 3 C 2 converted the moderately acidic sites of NiZr/Ti 3 C 2 to strong Lewis acid sites and increased the total number of acid sites by approximately 0.8-fold. The active Lewis acid sites on the surface of NiZr/N-doped TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 adsorbed only C=O bonds and inhibited the adsorption of C=C bonds, resulting in a high cinnamaldehyde conversion of 90.69 % and a cinnamyl alcohol selectivity of 91.87 %.

TEMPO-Grafted Polystyrene/Polymethacrylate Organosiloxane Janus Nanohybrids as Efficient Pickering Interfacial Catalyst for Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Cinnamyl Alcohol

Badusha Mohamad Ali,Ziqi Yu,Zhengyuan Tao,Tangxin Zhang,Lei Wang,Chenbing He,Hao Zhang,Jianli Wang

The novel 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) groups immobilized on functional polymers or nanoparticles emerged as potential Pickering interfacial catalysts (PICs) for effective catalysis in biphasic systems. In this study, a snowman-shaped Janus-structured polymer with TEMPO-anchored nanohybrid particles (SM-JPP-TEMPO) was prepared and employed as a potential PIC in the Anelli–Montanari system for the selective oxidation of alcohol. The amphiphilic character of SM-JPP-TEMPO particles plays a dual role as an emulsifier and catalyst in the Pickering emulsion. As a result, it enables smaller droplets (102 μm) at the water-in-oil (W/O) interface and reduces the interfacial tension from 26.58 to 17.38 mN/m, which improves the stability of the Pickering emulsion system. This constructed Pickering emulsion microreactor offers a larger interface contact area and shortens the mass transfer distance of the substrate of cinnamyl alcohol, which significantly enhances the catalytic conversion at the Anelli–Montanari oxidation system, thus achieving remarkable conversion efficiency of (92.3%) with excellent selectivity (99%) in static (stirring-free) condition. It was found that the Janus nanohybrid catalyst (SM-JPP-TEMPO) enhanced 1.29-fold catalytic efficiency compared to the TEMPO grafted spherical polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-NPs-TEMPO) catalyst (72%). Moreover, after seven consecutive cycles, the Janus nanocatalyst (SM-JPP-TEMPO) maintained the conversion significantly. Hence, these results collectively highlight that the amphiphilic SM-JPP-TEMPO catalyst provides an efficient and eco-friendly strategy for the intensification of liquid–liquid biphasic reaction systems for potential applications in industries.

Functionalization of biodegradable hyperbranched poly(α,β-malic acid) as a nanocarrier platform for anticancer drug delivery

Ting Su,Xinyu Peng,Jun Cao,Jing Chang,Rong Liu,Zhongwei Gu,Bin He

Multiple functionalization of nanoparticles has attracted great interest in drug delivery. In this paper, biodegradable poly(α,β-malic acid) with a hyperbranched architecture was synthesized via the polycondensation of L-malic acid, the functionalized poly(α,β-malic acid) was used as a nanocarrier platform with the immobilization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) for long circulation, cinnamyl alcohol (CIN) for introducing π–π stacking interactions and 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole (API) for pH-sensitivity. The conjugates self-assembled into nanoparticles to load anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). The morphology, mean size and size distribution, drug release profile and in vitro anticancer activity of DOX loaded nanoparticles were studied. The results showed that the mean size of the nanoparticles was below 200 nm, the drug loading content was higher than 10 wt% and it increased with increasing CIN content because of the π–π stacking interaction between DOX and the carriers. The drug release of the nanoparticles was faster in the medium with pH 6.0 compared to pH 7.4. The nanoparticles exhibited an endosomal escape function to accelerate the release of DOX in cancer cells, which resulted in low IC50s to kill 4T1 breast cancer cells and HepG2 liver cancer cells in vitro.

Tuning electrochemical environment enables unexpected C=O selectivity for cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation over self-standing palladium cathode

Yusheng Gao,Aiqun Kong,Mao Peng,Ye Lv,Menghui Liu,Wei Li,Jinli Zhang,Yan Fu

It is particularly challengeable to achieve C=O selectivity for Pd catalysts in thermal catalytic hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). This work offers a new electrochemical strategy that enables an unexpected switch toward C=O bond for CAL hydrogenation, based on the specific interaction between CAL and electrolyte-modulated Pd surface. Under galvanostatic electrolysis, guanosine 5′-monophosphate-modulated Pd electrode affords a record cinnamyl alcohol (COL) selectivity of 90.3% in neutral catholyte with no sacrifice of CAL conversion, showing the faradaic efficiency of 68.2%. It is of great interest to find that the aromatic moiety of CAL determines the preferential activation toward C=O bond over Pd surface under electric field. It is reported for the first time that selective hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes can be altered by electrochemical environment located between Pd electrode and surrounding electrolyte involving alkali cation along with organic solvent.

Chemoselective Transfer Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde over Activated Charcoal Supported Pt/Fe3O4 Catalyst

Zhang Yong,Chen Chun,Gong Wan-bing,Song Jie-yao,Su Yan-ping,Zhang Hai-min,Wang Guo-zhong,Zhao Hui-jun

A variety of spherical and structured activated charcoal supported Pt/Fe 3 O 4 composites with an average particle size of ∼100 nm have been synthesized by a self-assembly method using the difference of reduction potential between Pt (IV) and Fe (II) precursors as driving force. The formed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) effectively prevent the aggregation of Pt nanocrystallites and promote the dispersion of Pt NPs on the surface of catalyst, which will be favorable for the exposure of Pt active sites for high-efficient adsorption and contact of substrate and hydrogen donor. The electron-enrichment state of Pt NPs donated by Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystallites is corroborated by XPS measurement, which is responsible for promoting and activating the terminal C=O bond of adsorbed substrate via a vertical configuration. The experimental results show that the activated charcoal supported Pt/Fe 3 O 4 catalyst exhibits 94.8% selectivity towards cinnamyl alcohol by the transfer hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde with Pt loading of 2.46% under the optimum conditions of 120 °C for 6 h, and 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor. Additionally, the present study demonstrates that a high-efficient and recyclable catalyst can be rapidly separated from the mixture due to its natural magnetism upon the application of magnetic field.

Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Linear Amphiphilic Polymers for Enhancing the Selective Oxidation of Cinnamyl Alcohol

Qincheng Ma,Honglin Zhou,Xiang Shao,Junbao Chen,Yujie Cheng,Mengxin Chen,Yizhang Jiang,Xiangxiang Chen,Qingping Ke,Ying Wang,Jun Tang,Yunyuan Dong,Ping Cui

Liquid–liquid biphasic reactions are widely used in academic research and industrial production; however, they have always suffered from low reactivity. In this work, a variety of linear polymeric catalysts were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and postoxidation steps. The amphiphilicity of polymeric catalysts was imparted by varying the addition ratios of hydrophilic 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-2-(4-vinylbenzyl) guanidine, hydrophobic styrene, and catalyst precursor 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl methacrylate, thus forming stable Pickering emulsions. Such Pickering emulsion systems with an abundant interfacial area and a unique interfacial environment can promote the selective oxidation reaction. As exemplified by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinooxy-mediated oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol, the selectivity of cinnamaldehyde in Pickering emulsions was 97.2% with a turnover frequency of 5.0 mol·mol–1·min–1, which is higher than reported results. The carbon dioxide responsiveness of the guanidine group on the polymers allowed for fast demulsification after the reaction, and the recycled polymer maintained high activity after 10 runs. This polymer-stabilized Pickering emulsion provides a valuable pathway for efficient green catalytic oxidation reactions.

Pichia galeiformis Induces Resistance in Postharvest Citrus by Activating the Phenylpropanoid Biosynthesis Pathway

Ou Chen,Lili Deng,Changqing Ruan,Lanhua Yi,Kaifang Zeng

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Pichia galeiformis on disease resistance and elucidate the changes in phenylpropane biosynthesis treated by P. galeiformis in postharvest citrus. The results showed that P. galeiformis reduced the disease incidence and lesion diameters without direct contact with the pathogen Penicillium digitatum. Transcriptome analysis revealed that phenylpropanoid biosynthesis was triggered by P. galeiformis. Genes encoding phenylpropanoid biosynthesis were upregulated, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), 4-coumaroyl-CoA ligase (4CL), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), peroxidase (POD), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), O-methyltransferase, and hydroxyl cinnamoyl transferase. Moreover, P. galeiformis increased the activity of PAL, 4CL, C4H, POD, polyphenol oxidase, and CAD in citrus pericarp. In addition, P. galeiformis treated citrus displayed higher levels of total phenolic compounds, flavonoid, and lignin and higher amounts of ferulic and sinapic acid. In conclusion, these results suggested that P. galeiformis could induce resistance through modulating the pathway of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis in postharvest citrus.
