Membrane distillation (MD) is driven by vapor pressures rather than hydraulic pressures. Consequently, certain regions of the membrane may be in an unrestrained state, which potentially lead to membrane vibrations due to the turbulence caused by crossflow. However, this crossflow-induced membrane vibration has been largely overlooked in the previous studies. Here, we made the first attempt to investigate the crossflow-induced membrane vibration through the observation using optical coherence tomography (OCT), and explore the effect of this vibration on membrane fouling and scaling. The experimental results revealed that the vibration exhibited a self-excited vibration mode, with amplitudes reaching tens of micrometers. Moreover, the amplitude could be readily adjusted through changing crossflow velocity, transmembrane pressure, and the mesh size of spacer. For humic acid (HA) fouling, the membrane vibration could effectively reduce the thickness of HA cake layer, thereby stabilizing the specific flux at a constant level of 0.85, in contrast to the continuous decline of the flux under non-vibration condition. For gypsum scaling, the membrane vibration allowed the MD under low crossflow velocity (5 cm/s) to achieve comparable scaling occurrence concentration and scaling layer thickness as those under high crossflow velocity (10 cm/s). Our findings emphasized the potential of crossflow-induced membrane vibration as an effective strategy to mitigate membrane fouling and scaling in MD and other non-pressure driven membrane systems.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is rarely used as substrate membrane for thin film composite polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane due to its hydrophobic surface pushes water away during interfacial polymerization. According to Jurin's law, the pressure of membrane surface pushed water away is inversely proportional to the radius of membrane pore. In this study, a series of commercial PVDF membranes with pores ranging from 25 to 450 nm were used as substrates in a traditional interfacial polymerization. This preparation process does not need any pre-modification on substrate or specific equipment. It was found that the PVDF substrate pore size greatly influences the morphologies and surface properties of the corresponding TFC PA NF membrane. Only when a PVDF substrate has moderate pore size, such as 50 and 100 nm, could a continuous and defect-free PA layer will be formed, as verified through SEM characterization. The TFC membrane prepared with the PVDF substrate of 100 nm exhibits a 27.0 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 pure water permeance, and a 96.2% Na 2 SO 4 rejection. The facile and effective method demonstrated in this study provides a new thought for the preparation of PVDF substrate supported PA NF membrane.

In order to improve the retention of amino acids in desalinating a saline stream using electrodialysis, a novel porphyrin-containing thin-film composite (TFC) cation exchange membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization (IP) using tetraphenylporphinesulfonate (TPPS), m-phenylene diamine (MPD), and trimesoyl chloride. The separation of a single amino acid [Arginine (Arg), Lysine (Lys), Histidine (His), and Proline (Pro)] and the mixture of four from a NaCl solution was investigated. Results showed that sodium ions transported much faster than the amino acid ions due to its small molar mass and high mobility. Arg migrated much faster than Lys may attribute to its guanidine that increased the polarity of the ion, thus resulting in a higher loss degree of Arg (60%) than that of Lys (32%) in the single amino acid test. In the mixed amino acid test, a competition behavior between Arg and Lys limited their transport over membrane. The loss degree of Arg and Lys was reduced to 32.7% and 9.31% with porphyrin TFC membrane, which could be attributed to combination of the TFC dense layer and the strong electrical interaction between the charge-elevated membrane surface and the amino acids. The porphyrin TFC achieved a loss degree of total amino acids of 13.8%, which was much lower than that of pristine TFC membrane (20.2%) and based membrane (27.25%), respectively. These findings indicated that using porphyrin TFC membrane can efficiently separate salts and amino acids, and may also be beneficial for other membrane separation techniques.

In this study, the removal efficiency of chemicals of emerging concerns (CECs) was evaluated under exposure to various doses of UV/H 2 O 2 -based oxidation processes in combination with membrane filtration for three cleaning cycles. Polyethersulphone (PES) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials based membranes were used for this study. The chemical cleaning of the membranes was performed by immersion of the membranes into 1 N HCl followed by adding 3000 mg.L −1 NaOCl for 1hr. Degradation and filtration performance was evaluated using Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Membrane fouling analysis for assessing the comparative performance of PES and PVDF membranes was determined by specific fouling and fouling indices evaluation. Membrane characterization results show that the alkynes and carbonyl group formation are due to dehydrofluorination and oxidation of PVDF and PES membranes under the attack of foulants and cleaning chemicals, which resulted in a reduction of fluoride percentage and an increase in sulfur percentage in the PVDF and PES membranes. A decrease in the hydrophilicity of the membranes in underexposed conditions was observed and is consistent with an increase in dose. Degradation results of CECs follow with the highest removal efficiency of chlortetracycline (CTC) followed by atenolol (ATL), acetaminophen (ACT), and caffeine (CAF) degradation due to attack on the aromatic ring and the carbonyl group of CECs by OH exposure. Membrane exposed at 3 mg.L-1 dose of UV/H 2 O 2 -based CECs shows minimum alteration with higher filtration efficiency and lower fouling, particularly in PES membranes.

Corneal disease has become the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Corneal transplantation is currently considered to be one of the common treatments for vision loss. This paper presents a novel approach utilizing dual-crosslinked membranes composed of polyrotaxane multiple aldehydes (PRAs), 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) in the development process. Collagen was crosslinked, respectively, by EDC/NHS and PRAs to form stable amide bonds and imine groups. Through the formation of a double interpenetrating network, dual-crosslinked (Col-EDC-PRA) membranes exhibited enhanced resistance to collagenase degradation and superior mechanical properties compared to membranes crosslinked with a single crosslinker. Furthermore, Col-EDC-PRA membranes display favorable light transmittance and water content characteristics. Cell experiments showed that Col-EDC-PRA membranes were noncytotoxic and were not significantly different from other membranes. In a rabbit keratoplasty model, corneal stromal repair occurred at 5 months, evidenced by the presence of stromal cells and neo-stroma, as depicted in hematoxylin–eosin-stained histologic sections and optical coherence tomography images of the anterior segment. Moreover, there was no inflammation and corneal neovascularization, as well as no corneal rejection reaction in the surgical area. Overall, the results demonstrated that the dual-crosslinked membranes served effectively for corneal tissue regeneration after corneal defect. Keywords:collagen membrane;corneal repair;corneal regeneration

The DCMD technology for wastewater treatment is very promising. However, it is easily suffered by membrane fouling and wetting. In this study, a Janus membrane was fabricated by coating polyvinylamine (PVAM) and gallic acid (GA) onto one side of a PVDF composite membrane, which another side is covered with POTS-SiO 2 . The PVAM and GA side could bind water to form a hydration layer, thus repel the contaminants. The POTS-SiO 2 side was superhydrophobicity and prevented the membrane wetting. Finally, The Janus membrane presented exceptional performance in separating salt containing emulsified oil by DCMD. It kept a stable flux of 17.0 ± 0.2 Kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a low level conductivity of 0.60 ± 0.02 μS/cm in the cold side during the 36 h DCMD procedure, compared with the pristine PVDF membrane and the PVDF/POTS-SiO 2 membrane. The results presented simultaneously antifouling and antiwetting properties of the Janus membrane. While the Janus membrane can be well used in desalination of emulsified oil containing salt, it has a great potential for application to treat other complex wastewater.

Nanoparticle doping in membranes is an ideal strategy for improving performance of aqueous-aqueous membrane extraction (AAME). However, its derived adsorption has not been investigated regarding performance enhancement/deterioration of phenol transmembrane mass transfer they might bring, especially in porous membranes. Therefore, supercapacitor-activated carbon (YEC-8)-doped (>30 mg/g) and silica-doped membranes (<0.1 mg/g) only with differentiated adsorption capacity were prepared to identify adsorption impact on phenol extraction from saline-wastewater. Surprisingly, membrane adsorption significantly inhibited phenol transmembrane mass transfer regardless of adsorption saturation rather than enhancement as we hypothesized. Compared to PVDF membrane, extraction performance of silica-doped membrane decreased by 24.0% at 2 g/L phenol. For YEC-8-doped membrane, its extraction performance even decreased by 40%-50% when facing multiple phenol concentrations. These results stated the important role of volatilization-diffusion in phenol transmembrane mass transfer in comparison with solution-diffusion. Membrane characterization and Hagen-Poiseuille model analysis demonstrated that membrane pore complexity would induce partial performance degradation. DFT calculation further confirmed that adsorption of gaseous phenol (−1.7292 eV) within membrane pores was primary limiting step in transmembrane mass transfer. Overall, this study elucidates transmembrane mass transfer pathway, process, and mechanism of phenol in AAME with nanoparticle-doped porous membrane for the first time.

Membrane distillation technology, utilized for treating hypersaline wastewater from seawater desalination, often encounters challenges related to inorganic scaling, adversely affecting membrane performance. Herein, we introduce a innovative approach employing a sacrificial layer on the surface of Thin Film Composite (TFC) membranes to concurrently enhance inorganic scaling resistance and facilitate membrane reusability. The sacrificial layer (Fe 3+ -TA) consisted of tannic acid (TA) complexed with iron ions (Fe 3+ ) and could be removed and regenerated in situ. The results demonstrated that the Fe 3+ -TA layer significantly improved the membrane's surface smoothness and densification, maintaining superior anti-scaling performance. The modified membrane exhibited remarkable durability, sustaining six reuse cycles with a flux recovery exceeding 97 % in gypsum scaling tests. Furthermore, the formation of new complexes during gypsum scaling tests confirmed the membrane's augmented scaling retardation capabilities. Thus, integrating of a sacrificial layer into TFC membranes presents a promising strategy for advancing membrane distillation processes in hypersaline wastewater treatment.

Membrane scaling and subsequent membrane wetting pose significant impediments to the application of membrane distillation (MD) in treating high-salinity wastewater. This study introduces an innovative in-situ bubble cleaning strategy for the amelioration of membrane scaling in MD processes. A catalytic membrane was fabricated by introducing MnO 2 as a catalyst by electrospinning and the self-cleaning mechanism involving micro-nano bubbles and superhydrophobic surface was systematically investigated. Results showed that the fabricated MnO 2 /PVDF nanofiber membranes (M-FMP) showed superhydrophobic properties, with a water contact angle and rolling angle of 158° and 17°, which significantly improved the membrane's resistance to wetting and fouling. The M-FMP membrane exhibited exceptional performance across ten experimental cycles, achieving a flux recovery rate of over 92 % and demonstrating robust chemical stability following repeated cleanings with 0.006 wt% H 2 O 2 . Notably, CaSO 4 deposition on the M-FMP membrane was approximately 46.0 μg/cm 2 , accounting for only 14.6 % of the deposition observed on the M-P electrospun membrane. The in-situ cleaning process leveraging micro-nano bubbles proved to be significantly more effective than conventional ex-situ cleaning methods, offering superior performance in removing scale deposits. Overall, this pioneering in-situ catalytic self-cleaning approach offers a new option for controlling MD membrane scaling.

Substantial volumes of hazardous shale gas produced water (SGPW) generated in unconventional natural gas exploration. Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising approach for SGPW desalination, while membrane fouling, wetting, and permeate deterioration restrict MD application. The integration of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) with MD process was proposed to improve MD performance, and different pretreatment methods (i.e., oxidation, coagulation, and granular filtration) were systematically investigated. Results showed that pretreatment released GDM fouling and improved permeate quality by enrich certain microbes’ community (e.g., Proteobacteria and Nitrosomonadaceae ), greatly ensured the efficient desalination of MD. Pretreatment greatly influences GDM fouling layer morphology, leading to different flux performance. Thick/rough/hydrophilic fouling layer formed after coagulation, and thin/loose fouling layer formed after silica sand filtration improved GDM flux by 2.92 and 1.9 times, respectively. Moreover, the beneficial utilization of adsorption-biodegradation effects significantly enhanced GDM permeate quality. 100 % of ammonia and 53.99 % of UV 254 were efficiently removed after zeolite filtration-GDM and granular activated carbon filtration-GDM, respectively. Compared to the surged conductivity (41.29 μS/cm) and severe flux decline (>82 %) under water recovery rate of 75 % observed in single MD for SGPW treatment, GDM economically controlled permeate conductivity (1.39-19.9 μS/cm) and MD fouling (flux decline=8.3 %-27.5 %). Exploring the mechanisms, the GDM-MD process has similarity with Janus MD membrane in SGPW treatment, significantly reduced MD fouling and wetting.

As a key component of direct methanol fuel cells, proton exchange membranes with suitable thickness and robust mechanical properties have attracted increasing attention. On the one hand, a thinner membrane gives a lower internal resistance, which contributes highly to the overall electrochemical performance of the cell, on the other hand, strong mechanical strength is required for the application of proton exchange membranes. In this work, a sulfonated poly (fluorenyl ether ketone) (SPFEK)-impregnated polyimide nanofiber mat composite membrane (PI@SPFEK) was fabricated. The new composite membrane with a thickness of about 55 μm exhibited a tensile strength of 35.1 MPa in a hydrated state, which is about 65.8% higher than that of the pristine SPFEK membrane. The antioxidant stability test in Fenton’s reagent shows that the reinforced membrane affords better oxidation stability than does the pristine SPFEK membrane. Furthermore, the morphology, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and fuel cell performance were carefully evaluated and discussed. Keywords:electrospun mat;proton exchange membrane;direct methanol fuel cell;composite membrane

The treatment of hypersaline wastewaters with membrane distillation (MD) is significant but challenging, owing to the critical limitations of severe membrane wetting and fouling. Herein, a monolithic and self-roughened Janus fibrous membrane (FM) with asymmetrical superwettability was developed via sequential electrospinning and electrospraying in combination with thermal treatment. We detailedly discussed the formation mechanism of the roughness on the fiber surface via electrospinning/electrospraying technique and explored the asymmetrical wettability and the monolithic performance of Janus FM for the synergistic resistance of membrane wetting and fouling. Benefiting from the high in-air water contact of 157° of the omniphobic surface, the high underwater oil contact angle of 156° of the superhydrophilic skin layer, as well as the monolithic performance of the resultant membrane, the newly developed Janus FM achieves a high water flux of over 27 L m −2 h −1 and high desalination efficiency of ~100% when desalination of the simulated hypersaline wastewater composed of 3.5 wt% of NaCl, 0.1 g of SDBS and 1.0 g of lubricating oil. The presented strategy on Janus FM fabrication is believed to open a new direction to prepare monolithic, self-roughened, and asymmetrically superwettable Janus FM and applied in a wide field of other selective separation applications.
