Chlorine doped K2NiF4-type oxide as an efficient oxygen reduction catalyst for protonic ceramic fuel cells

Shujun Peng,Yan Chen,Xingyao Liu,Song Lei,Jian Xue

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) operated at medium temperatures have attracted plenty of researches due to their many advantages, such as high efficiency for energy conversion, easier sealing, catabatic material aging, no attenuation of fuel and so on. However, the industrial application of PCFCs is greatly fettered by the development of high-performance cathodes with superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. In this work, a chlorine doped K 2 NiF 4 -type oxide named as Pr 1.8 La 0.2 Ni 0.74 Cu 0.21 Ga 0.05 O 4+ δ Cl 0.1 (PLNCGCl 0.1 ) is developed as the cathode for PCFC according to the BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (BZCYYb) electrolyte, which demonstrates enhanced ORR kinetics, as corroborated by a series of structural analysis and electrochemical characterizations. Theoretical simulations have shown that doping Cl not only favors interstitial oxygen formation thermodynamically, but also alleviates the kinetic energy hurdle associated with the oxygen reduction reaction’s critical rate-determining step. An anode-supported PCFC with PLNCGCl 0.1 as the cathode outputs peak power density (PPD) of 1.162 W cm −2 and the polarization resistance (R p ) is 0.069 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C. This work paves an efficient venue for the development of active and durable K 2 NiF 4 -type cathode by Cl-doping with high ORR kinetics.

Simultaneous generation of electricity, ethylene and decomposition of nitrous oxide via protonic ceramic fuel cell membrane reactor

Song Lei,Ao Wang,Guowei Weng,Ying Wu,Jian Xue,Haihui Wang

Ethylene, one of the most widely produced building blocks in the petrochemical industry, has received intense attention. Ethylene production, using electrochemical hydrogen pump-facilitated nonoxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (NDE) to ethylene, is an emerging and promising route, promoting the transformation of the ethylene industry from energy-intensive steam cracking process to new electrochemical membrane reactor technology. In this work, the NDE reaction is incorporated into a BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ electrolyte-supported protonic ceramic fuel cell membrane reactor to co-generate electricity and ethylene, utilizing the Nb and Cu doped perovskite oxide Pr 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 0.8 Nb 0.1 Cu 0.1 O 3− δ (PSFNCu) as anode catalytic layer. Due to the doping of Nb and Cu, PSFNCu was endowed with high reduction tolerance and rich oxygen vacancies, showing excellent NDE catalytic performance. The maximum power density of the assembled reactor reaches 200 mW cm −2 at 750 °C, with high ethane conversion (44.9%) and ethylene selectivity (92.7%). Moreover, the nitrous oxide decomposition was first coupled in the protonic ceramic fuel cell membrane reactor to consume the permeated protons. As a result, the generation of electricity, ethylene and decomposition of nitrous oxide can be simultaneously obtained by a single reactor. Specifically, the maximum power density of the cell reaches 208 mW cm −2 at 750 °C, with high ethane conversion (45.2%), ethylene selectivity (92.5%), and nitrous oxide conversion (19.0%). This multi-win technology is promising for not only the production of chemicals and energy but also greenhouse gas reduction.

Doping strategies towards acceptor-doped barium zirconate compatible with nickel oxide anode substrate subjected to high temperature co-sintering

Yifeng Li,Shihang Guo,Donglin Han

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are attractive next-generation fuel cells working at intermediate temperature (450–700 °C). Currently, the most common method to produce PCFCs is based on co-sintering anode-supported half cells composed of thin BaZr 0.8 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZY20) electrolyte layers and thick NiO anode substrates. However, the BZY20 electrolyte reacts with NiO at the high temperature during co-sintering (1400–1600 °C), leading to significant loss of dopants in the electrolyte and thereby degradation in the conductivity. With the aim to improve the chemical compatibility between the BaZrO 3 -based electrolyte and NiO, in this work, we annealed the mixture of NiO and BaZrO 3 doped with different dopants, and found that good compatibility was obtained between NiO and BaZr 0.8 Yb 0.2 O 3-δ or BaZr 0.8 Tm 0.2 O 3-δ at 1500 °C, and NiO and BaZr 0.8 Yb 0.2 O 3-δ at 1350 °C. Furthermore, BaZr 0.8 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ and BaZr 0.8 Y 0.12 Yb 0.08 O 3-δ also showed good chemical compatibility with NiO at 1350 and 1500 °C. Then, the half cells using the BaZrO 3 electrolyte doped with Y and Yb were fabricated, and the ionic conductivities of the electrolytes implemented into the co-sintered half cells were measured directly in wet hydrogen. The results revealed that BaZr 0.8 Y x Yb 0.2- x O 3-δ ( x  = 0.10, 0.12, 0.13) showed higher conductivity than that of BaZr 0.8 Y 0.2 O 3-δ , and BaZr 0.8 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ exhibited the highest conductivity among the three Y and Yb co-doped samples studied in this work.

High-performance novel anode-supported microtubular protonic ceramic fuel cells via highly efficient and simplified extrusion technology

Zichen Zhuang,Zuzhi Huang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Kui Liu,Guozhu Zheng,Ting Chen,Ruili Sun,Lang Xu,Shaorong Wang

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are regarded as efficient energy conversion devices for addressing the challenges of carbon neutrality, which can directly convert the chemical fuel energy into electricity at reduced operating temperatures below 700 °C. However, the insufficient strength and immature preparation processes of PCFCs limit their practical application. In this work, the novel anode-supported microtubular PCFCs with a tube diameter of less than 5 mm were successfully prepared by extrusion technology combined with a dip-coating method. The newly developed BaZr0.4Ce0.4Y0.1Gd0.1O3-δ (BZCYG4411) proton-conducting electrolyte was synthesized using an extremely simple and efficient one-step solid-state reaction method, showing comparable electrical conductivity with BaZr0.4Ce0.4Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ (BZCYYb4411) and BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ (BZCYYb1711) electrolytes, as well as excellent chemical stability. The single cell with Ba2Sc0.1Nb0.1Co1.5Fe0.3O6-δ (BSNCF) cathode exhibited a high peak power density of 906.86 mW cm-2 at 700 °C. Additionally, this microtubular PCFC demonstrated excellent stability after about 103 h durability test at a constant current of 0.5 A cm-2 at 650 °C. This study provides a highly efficient and simplified technology for fabricating high-performance and durable anode-supported microtubular PCFCs.

Effect of increasing Fe catalytic decomposition layer of ammonia on the performance and stability of ammonia electrode

Haiyang Lan,Jiaming Chu,Xingyu Chen,Qi Zhou,Weitao Jin,Yanhong Zhang,Juan Zhou

In a direct ammonia proton ceramic fuel cell (DA-PCFC), attaching a catalyst layer on the surface of the ammonia electrode is known to optimize the cell's electrochemical performance and long-term stability. In this study, the Fe catalyst layer is added to the ammonia electrode of the full cell which is prepared with the structure Ni– BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) (support layer)|Ni-BZCYYb (active layer)|BZCYYb|La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ to investigate its impact on the electrochemical performance and stability of the electrode. Under the conditions of 700 °C and 20 ml min −1 ammonia fuel, the peak power densities of cells with and without the Fe layer reach 585.051 and 463.671 mW cm −2 , respectively. It is evident that the addition of the Fe catalytic layer significantly improves the electrochemical performance of the cell. Stability tests are carried out for cells with and without the Fe layer at 650 °C, 0.36 A cm −2 , and 0.32 A cm −2 constant current discharge. After discharge for 313 and 372 h, both cells show good stability, and the discharge curves of the two cells are consistent after 100 h. The high M − N binding energy of the Fe catalytic layer improved the initial performance of the cell, but this improvement is not sustained over the stability.

Effect of BaOB2O3 composite sintering aid on sinterability and electrical property of BaZr0.85Y0.15O3-δ ceramic

Jiahui Jiao,Qiang Li,Yiheng Gu,Yali Luo,Lin Ge,Yifeng Zheng,Han Chen,Lucun Guo

Yttrium-doped barium zirconate (BZY) has been extensively studied as a promising electrolyte material for protonic ceramic fuel cells . However, inferior sinterability is a major barrier in BZY development. In our research, the effect of BaO B 2 O 3 composite sintering aid on the sintering behavior and electrical property of BaZr 0.85 Y 0.15 O 3- δ (BZY15) are examined. BaO B 2 O 3 addition reduces the sintering temperature of BZY15 by approximately 200 °C via the liquid-phase sintering mechanism. The corresponding bulk and grain boundary conductivities are prominently improved (<3 wt% BaO B 2 O 3 addition), whereas the further addition of sintering aid decreases the grain boundary conductivity. Notably, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses suggest that the enhanced conductivity may be related to the temperature dependence of Ba evaporation.

K-doped BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.2O3−δ as a promising cathode material for protonic ceramic fuel cells

Qiu Peng,Liu Bo,Wu Lei,Qi Huiying,Tu Baofeng,Li Jian,Jia Lichao

Slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) involving proton transport remains the limiting factor for electrochemical performance of proton-conducting cathodes. To further reduce the operating temperature of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs), developing triple-conducting cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance is required. In this study, K-doped BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2 O 3− δ (BCFZ442) series were developed and used as the cathodes of the PCFCs, and their crystal structure, conductivity, hydration capability, and electrochemical performance were characterized in detail. Among them, Ba 0.9 K 0.1 Co 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2 O 3− δ (K10) cathode has the best electrochemical performance, which can be attributed to its high electron (e − )/oxygen ion (O 2− )/H + conductivity and proton uptake capacity. At 750 °C, the polarization resistance of the K10 cathode is only 0.009 Ω·cm 2 , the peak power density (PPD) of the single cell with the K10 cathode is close to 1 Wcm −2 , and there is no significant degradation within 150 h. Excellent electrochemical performance and durability make K10 a promising cathode material for the PCFCs. This work can provide a guidance for further improving the proton transport capability of the triple-conducting oxides, which is of great significance for developing the PCFC cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance.

Self-assembled La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ-La1.2Sr0.8NiO4+δ composite cathode for protonic ceramic fuel cells

Zhi Yang,Jian Zhang,Bingxue Wu,Xin Zhao,Xuanlin Lu,Yicheng Zhao,Yongdan Li

The oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode is an essential process for protonic ceramic fuel cells . Composite cathode materials are commonly used towards the multiple requirements including high surface oxygen activity as well as sufficient electronic and ionic conductivities . In this study, a cobalt-free composite cathode composed of a perovskite La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ phase and a Ruddlesden-Popper La 1.2 Sr 0.8 NiO 4+δ phase is synthesized with a self-assembly technology. The cathode process is mainly controlled by (I) the reduction of adsorbed oxygen atom to O − on the surface and (II) the migration of O − from the surface into the lattice. The former benefits from the high electrical conductivity of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ , and the latter is accelerated by La 1.2 Sr 0.8 NiO 4+δ attributed to its superior oxygen activity. The one-pot synthesized composite cathode shows an enhanced synergistic effect due to the uniform distribution of the two phases at the nanoscale. The cathode shows the lowest polarization resistances of 0.055 and 0.095 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in oxygen and air, respectively. The results show that self-assembled La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3-δ -La 1.2 Sr 0.8 NiO 4+δ nanocomposite is a promising cathode material for protonic ceramic fuel cells.

Enhancing the mass transfer of protonic ceramic fuel cells with open-straight pore structure via phase inversion tape casting

Kui Liu,Xiaoyu Zhang,Zuzhi Huang,Zichen Zhuang,Guozhu Zheng,Ting Chen,Shaorong Wang

The porosity and pore structure of anode support plays an important role in fuel gas diffusion of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). In this study, the PCFC with Ni-BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) anode substrate with finger-like straight pore and reasonable flexural strength was successfully prepared by a one-step phase inversion tape casting , spin coating and co-firing technologies. The peak power density of single cell reaches 0.77 W cm -2 at 700 °C using 3 % H 2 O humidified hydrogen as the fuel, which is significantly higher than the single cell prepared by typical dry-pressing method. It is found that the improvement is attributed to the optimization of anode mass transfer process with open-straight hole according to the relaxation time distribution (DRT) analysis of polarization resistance . Meanwhile, the single cell prepared by one-step phase inversion tape casting shows no significant degradation after a 100 h stability test at 650 °C or short thermal-cycling test. The results indicate that the fabrication of straight hole via phase inversion tape casting is an effective way to facilitate the transfer of fuel gas and eliminate the concentration polarization loss.

Y2W3O12@SiO2 composite particles for regulating thermal expansion and interfacial reactions in BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ/AISI 441 joints

Xiaoyang Wang,Xiaoqing Si,Mingshen Li,Qihan Zhou,Jianwei Gao,Chun Li,Junlei Qi,Jian Cao

Y 2 W 3 O 12 particles with negative thermal expansion (NTE) can offset the high thermal expansion of Ag-based sealants, thus relieving the residual stress of electrolyte/interconnect joints in protonic ceramic fuel cell (PCFC) stacks. Nevertheless, violent interfacial reactions between Y 2 W 3 O 12 particles and BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ electrolyte have severely restricted the application of these NTE particles. Herein, novel Y 2 W 3 O 12 @SiO 2 composite particles with a core-shell structure are successfully designed to address this conundrum. The thermal expansion coefficient of Ag-based sealant is lowered from 19.7 to 14.6 ppm/K by adding 20 wt% Y 2 W 3 O 12 @SiO 2 particles. During joining, the SiO 2 shell significantly reduces the reaction consumption of Y 2 W 3 O 12 , fully exploiting its NTE properties. Meanwhile, a tiny portion of SiO 2 participates in and regulates interfacial reactions, generating mechanically matched reaction layers. Finite element simulation demonstrates that introducing Y 2 W 3 O 12 @SiO 2 particles significantly releases the compressive X-stress near the BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ interface, thus increasing the joint strength from ∼25.3 to ∼32.4 MPa. Obtained joints maintain long-term stability in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres at 600 °C, suggesting the applicability of Y 2 W 3 O 12 @SiO 2 composite particles in fabricating PCFC stacks. Our work provides a new strategy for preparing NTE materials with controllable interfacial reactions and service capability under extreme conditions.

Batch fabrication of micro-tubular protonic ceramic fuel cells via a phase inversion-based co-spinning/co-sintering technique

Gonghe Tong,Yanbin Li,Zhigang Wang,Xiaoyao Tan

Micro-tubular protonic ceramic fuel cells (MT-PCFCs) are prominently advantageous in energy conversion and storage , such as intermediate operating temperature, large volumetric power density, and low sealing requirements. Formation of thin and dense electrolyte film and efficient current collection, particularly from the micro lumen, are the primary challenges for preparing high-performance MT-PCFCs. The present work carries out a one-step fabrication of triple-layer hollow fibers (TLHFs) with anodic current collector/graded anode/electrolyte using BaCe 0 · 7 Zr 0 · 1 Y 0 · 2 O 3-δ via the phase-inversion based co-spinning/co-sintering technique. A BaCo 0 · 4 Fe 0 · 4 Zr 0 · 1 Y 0 · 1 O 3-δ based porous cathode is then applied on the TLHF's outer surface to create a complete fuel cell. The resultant single MT-PCFC yields a peak power density of 601.2 mW cm −2 at 700 °C. Furthermore, an MT-PCFC stack is made by bundling seven TLHFs using the porous cathode. With an effective area exceeding 12 cm 2 , the MT-PCFC stack generates a power output of 2.5 W at 700 °C. The stability test lasts for 100 h at 600 °C under 100 mA cm −2 and for next 60 h at varied temperatures from 700 to 600 °C under 200 mA cm −2 . The inventive design of TLHFs facilitates the scale-up of fuel cells, promoting the development of a large-scale MT-PCFC stack or systems.

A New In Situ Synthetic Triple-Conducting Core–Shell Electrode for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

Chaoliang Geng,Huan Wu,Yu Yang,Bangzheng Wei,Tao Hong,Jigui Cheng

Triple-conducting cathodes (H+/O2–/e–) have attracted more and more interest because they have great responsibility for lowering operating temperature and driving the commercial application of protonic ceramic fuel cells. In this paper, the heterostructure triple-conducting cathode with the pseudo-cubic phase SrFe0.9Nb0.1O3−δ as the core and the tetragonal phase Sr3Fe1.8Nb0.2O7−δ as the shell was in situ synthesized by surface cladding mixed ionic and electronic conductor SrFe0.9Nb0.1O3−δ powders with Sr(NO3)2. Then, an electronic conducting relaxation method was implored to characterize the proton uptake ability of the shell layer SFN327. The synergistic effects of the heterostructure region and proton conductivity of the shell layer SFN327 make the core–shell structure SFN113@327 show superior electrochemical performance compared with the parent SFN113 as the electrode. The results of the electrochemical performance test of the symmetric cell and the single cell both verified the above mentioned. This paper mainly presents a new idea to prepare the electrode materials for protonic ceramic fuel cells.
