The crude oil spillage and large-scale industrial release of oily effluents has led to significant ecological degradation and resource wastage. Traditional superwetting materials encounter intractable challenges for treating surfactant-stabilized oil–water emulsions, including trade-off effect of permeation flux and separation efficiency, and low emulsion processing life. These issues considerably impede advancements in oil–water separation industry. In order to enhance the demulsification durability of materials while ensuring high separation efficiency and flux, this work doped perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) onto the modified sponge surface with superhydrophilic charged surface, and a unique in-air superhydrophilic-oleophobic sponge was prepared. This special surface allows rapid water phase permeation yet offers remarkably more stable oleophobicity compared with traditional underwater oleophobic materials when processing a large amount of emulsions. The intrinsic oleophobicity endows the sponge outstanding fouling resistance and greatly increases the one-cycle emulsion treatment amount up to 1695 L·m −2 . Moreover, the sponge's inherent long permeation channels and surface charge maintain a high separation efficiency of over 97 %. The large pores of the sponges and superhydrophilic surface provide a high permeation flux exceeding 40,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 . The sponge with high separation efficiency, flux, and capacity marks a significant advancement, offering a promising strategy for superwetting material applications in oil-in-water emulsion separation fields.

The generation and detachment of gas bubbles from electrodes have a substantial impact on mass transfer in electrocatalytic water splitting and superwetting electrodes have emerged as promising solution for addressing such challenge. However, the superhydrophilic or superaerophobic property was mainly related to the structure on the electrode surface, while the bubbles detachment behavior within the bulk space was less investigated. In this study, a three-dimensional NiFe electrode with superhydrophilic/superaerophobic surface and abundant gas channels was constructed via an in-situ bubble template method. The superwetting and hierarchical NiFe/NF can reduce the cumulative adhesion force of bubbles and the gas channels inside the electrode facilitated the transport and release of bubbles driven by the capillary effect. The released bubbles with an average diameter of 30 μm were observed at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . The optimized Ni 0.75 Fe 0.25 /NF electrode exhibited promising catalytic activities for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and a high current density of 500 mA cm −2 was achieved with overpotentials of 214 mV and 327 mV, respectively.

To realize efficient treatment of oily wastewater, various super-wetting materials have been developed. Oily wastewater is often complex and may contain both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. However, most of the current studies focus on the treatment of single emulsions, and there are fewer studies on the simultaneous separation of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. In this paper, by removing hemicellulose and lignin from bamboo processing waste powder (BPWP), the treated bamboo powder (TBP) containing mainly cellulose was obtained. TBP has superoleophobicity underwater and superhydrophilicity underoil, which can separate not only various oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by surfactants, but also water-in-oil emulsions stabilized by different surfactants, and the separation efficiency is higher than 99 %. The separation efficiencies of TBP for different water-in-oil emulsions were all higher than 99 %. On this basis, we have established an intelligent device that makes full use of underwater super-hydrophobic and under-oil super-hydrophilic properties to realize the purification of water and de-watering and recycling of floating oil in complex oil-water systems. This work provides a very promising direction for industrial application in practical oily wastewater treatment and fuel recovery.

The acquiring of superhydrophilic surfaces attracts the strong interest in self-cleaning, anti-fogging and anti-icing fields based on the unique features. However, the persistent time of superhydrophilic surfaces is still facing a big challenge because of easily adsorbing hydrophobic groups. Here, we propose a strategy to achieve a superhydrophilicity persisting for an unprecedently long time on sapphire surfaces, by compounding the femtosecond laser-induced hierarchical structures and the subsequent varnish of TiO2. The superhydrophilic effect (with a contact angle of CA = 0°) created by our method can be well prolonged to at least 180 days, even for its storage in air without additional illumination of UV lights. Based on comprehensive investigations, we attribute the underlying mechanisms to the coordination of laser-induced metal ions on the material surface via TiO2doping, which not only prevents the adsorption of the nonpolar hydrocarbon groups, but also modulates the photo-response properties of TiO2. In addition, further experiments demonstrate the excellent anti-fogging properties of our prepared samples. This investigation provides a new perspective for further enhancing the durability of superhydrophilicity surfaces. Keywords:femtosecond laser;long-time superhydrophilicity;sapphire;TiO2

Designing and constructing a stable water-retention layer acting as the isolation between the oil and membrane surface holds great significance for solving the membrane fouling problems in oil/water separation, including common layered oil/water mixtures, immiscible oil-in-water emulsions, and even high-viscosity crude oil-in-water emulsions. Inspired by the self-cleaning property of sea urchin thorns, a bioinspired anti-oil-fouling hierarchically structured membranes decorated with urchin-like α-FeOOH particles was successfully prepared via the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method, maintaining numerous effective micro-nanopores. The hierarchical structured membrane exhibited superior superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, high water-retention ability, and preferable anti-oil-fouling properties. Furthermore, the biomimetic membrane with controllable pore sizes could not only separate common layered oil/water mixtures but also effectively separate immiscible surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions of both low-viscosity crude oil and high-viscosity crude oil with an ultrahigh water flux up to 2598.4 L m–2 h–1 and an outstanding separation efficiency of 98.5%, revealing its promising prospect in oily wastewater treatment.

In order to solve urgent environmental problems caused by oil spills, it is meaningful and necessary to develop novel materials or techniques for efficient oil/water separation. Here, a new polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based composite membrane was successfully fabricated via a layer-by-layer self-assembly process, where the active sites were provided by pDA for the CaCO3 growth. Importantly, the CaCO3 structure could be regulated by the concentration of the precursor solution, showing the high flexibility of preparation. The as-prepared PVDF@pDA@CaCO3 membrane possessed superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic property and superior anti-fouling ability. In addition, the optimal PVDF@pDA@CaCO3-2 membrane showed a high permeation flux only under gravity, and the separation efficiency was as high as 99%. With the merits of low-cost and great separation performance, the as-prepared PVDF@pDA@CaCO3 membrane exhibited great potential in practical industrial applications for highly efficient oil/water emulsion separation.

Oily wastewater produced from various industries and oil spills has posed serious threats to the environment and human health. Promisingly, superwetting materials emerge as great candidates for efficient oil/water separation. In this work, a superhydrophilic-superoleophobic melamine sponge was prepared using a facile immersion method. Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was used as a binder, which combined fluorosurfactant (FS-50) and TiO 2 onto the sponge surface. The coated sponge displayed a water contact angle of 0° and an oil contact angle of 154.5°. Accordingly, it exhibited absorption capacities of above 86 g/g for water and under 1 g/g for oils. Based on its selective permeability and 3D porous structures, the coated sponge could continuously separate various immiscible oil/water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions with separation efficiencies larger than 99.4 % and 98.7 %, respectively. Notably, the superhydrophilic-superoleophobic sponge was extended to present opposite wettability towards polar and nonpolar liquids. Consequently, it achieved continuous separation of immiscible oil/oil mixtures, with separation efficiency over 99.1 %. Additionally, the coated sponge displayed excellent reusability, great mechanical stability against compression and abrasion, and stable separation performance for various harsh oil/water mixtures. The study presented a promising separation candidate for future applications in oily wastewater treatment and other liquid/liquid separation fields.

Materials with stimulus-responsive wettability are attracting increasing attention because of their potential applications in oil/water separation and oil spill remediation. Herein, a pH-responsive filter paper was rapidly fabricated by initially forming a complex between TiO 2 and octadecylamine, followed by immersion in an ethanolic solution of SiO 2 nanoparticles. The resultant filter paper exhibited superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity in air when the solution pH was greater than 6.0, whereas it became superhydrophilic and superoleophobic when the solution pH was less than 2.0. The treated filter paper was used for the controllable separation of complex oil/water/oil ternary mixtures, demonstrating its strong response to pH changes. The pH-responsive filter paper effectively separated both immiscible oil/water mixtures and different kinds of oil-in-water emulsions with separation efficiencies exceeding 99%. The durability of the pH-responsive filter paper was demonstrated by its ability to maintain a separation efficiency of around 99%, even after 25 cycles of separating a typical emulsion of tetrachloromethane in water. The developed approach has the potential to provide innovative smart materials for the treatment of oil-contaminated wastewater. Graphical abstract

The simple preparation of superhydrophilic membranes with good stability is of great significance for efficient oil–water separation. In this work, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane modified with tannic acid (TA) and pectin (PT) was developed through immersion in TA/PT solutions, facilitating the formation of complexes via co-deposition. The optimized PVDF@TA/PT3 membrane exhibited superhydrophilicity/superoleophobicity. The membrane achieved remarkable separation efficiencies exceeding 98.3% and fluxes ranging from 71.3 to 156.3 L m −2 h −1 for various oil–water emulsions under gravity-driven conditions. Notably, the membrane maintained exceptional durability through 10 separation cycles, retaining about 98% efficiency while exhibiting strong antifouling properties. Excellent separation performance coupled with facile fabrication protocol and chemical stability of the membrane, position the PVDF@TA/PT membrane as a technologically viable candidate for wastewater purification.

At present, there are few studies on the removal of water from oil, but water in fuel can cause machine malfunctions and even safety accidents, which cannot be ignored. In this study, an oil-resistant superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic sponge (SS-MS) was designed to selectively absorb water from oil. Through layer by layer deposition, polyphenols, particles, and fluorinated surfactants were assembled on the sponge, finally achieving the effect of super hydrophilic and super oil phobic in the air. The contact angle of the modified sponge SS-MS on diesel oil can reach 153°, and the absorption efficiency of water in diesel oil can reach more than 99 %. Moreover, a continuous selective absorption device for water in oil was constructed, the SS-MS sponge can still achieve a water absorption efficiency of 98 % after ten cycles. Importantly, the SS-MS has excellent mechanical and chemical stability under 80 % strain, different pH, UV irradiation times and temperatures. In addition, the materials used in this study are all green and low-pollution substances, and melamine sponge has the advantages of low price, light weight, good elasticity and high porosity. In summary, SS-MS offers a new approach to remove water from fuel and has the potential for large-scale applications.

The development of stimuli-responsive materials with the ability of controllable oil/water separation is crucial for practical applications. Here, a novel pH responsive nonfluorine-containing copolymer was designed. The copolymer together with silica can be dip-coated on different materials including cotton fabric, filter paper, and polyurethane foam. The coated materials exhibit switchable superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity and can be applied in continuous separation of oil/water/oil three phase mixtures, different surfactant stabilized emulsion (oil-in-water, water-in-oil, and oil-in-acidic water) as well as oil uptake and release via in situ and ex situ pH change. We expect that the coatings highlight the practical applications because of the cost-effective preparation process and fluorine-free strategy.

Oil contamination is pressing environmental and natural resource issues. Oil-water separation technology can be used for water purification . Traditional methods are either time consuming or energy intensive. Bioinspired materials with combination of affinity and/or repellence towards oil and water in mesh-based methods have attracted widespread attention in the oil-water separation. Among existing materials, superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials are prone to contamination by oil. Superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic materials can only operate underwater which restricts the practical use. In contrast, superoleophobic/superhydrophilic materials are desirable for oil-water separation. However, traditional mesh-based method cannot be used for separation of emulsions since the dispersed microdroplets can easily pass through the mesh pores. Superhydrophobic/superoleophilic cotton has been used for separation of water-in-oil emulsions. In this study, a facile method to fabricate bioinspired superoleophobic/superhydrophilic cotton was developed. The functionalized cotton exhibits an oil-repellent and water-wetting behavior and is capable of separating both immiscible oil-water mixtures and also oil-in-water emulsions without oil contamination. This developed cotton is of interest for various applications.
