Near-infrared (NIR) phosphors have emerged as novel luminescent materials across various fields due to their unique advantages of high penetration and invisibility. However, there is currently a lack of intelligent NIR phosphors that can achieve multimode stimuli responsive for sensing applications. In this study, we employed a high-temperature solid-phase reaction to incorporate Pr3+ into Cr3+-doped gallate magnetite SrGa12O19 phosphor, yielding a multimode luminescent intelligent NIR phosphor. Also, due to the inherent cation vacancies and defects in the matrix, the material not only exhibits brighter photoluminescence but also exhibits distinct NIR mechanoluminescence at a lower load. Notably, Pr3+-doped SrGa12O19:Cr3+ also demonstrates extended persistent luminescence and thermoluminescence effects. Finally, we combined the phosphor with the blue LED chip to develop a new multifunctional NIR pc-LED. Leveraging NIR’s unique penetrating ability, it can persist in biological tissues for prolonged periods, enabling optical inspection and offering a novel approach to password protection for anticounterfeiting measures. This intelligent NIR phosphor solution significantly expands the application potential of NIR light in food quality assessment and analysis.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) are considered promising light sources for night vision, food analysis, biomedicine, and plant growth. Yet, the application potential of this technology is vulnerable to the function degradation of the phosphors used, such as thermal quenching, which needs to be addressed urgently. Herein, the NIR phosphors K2LiMF6:Cr3+ (M = Al, Ga, In) with a cubic double-perovskite structure synthesized by a green hydrofluoric acid-free hydrothermal method exhibit outstanding thermal stability. Under 450 nm excitation, the as-synthesized K2LiMF6:Cr3+ phosphors all exhibited broadband NIR emission covering 650–1000 nm peaking at 755–780 nm. The prepared K2LiAlF6:Cr3+ phosphor shows a unique zero-thermal quenching performance (I423 K/I298 K = 102%). The comprehensive effects of a wide band gap, large thermal energy barrier, weak electron–phonon coupling effect, and high structural rigidity are responsible for the suppression of thermal quenching in this material. The output power of the NIR pc-LED device reached 285 mW at 100 mA. This series of phosphors has promise in night vision and bioimaging applications.

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are essential for assembling portable NIR light sources. However, the development of efficient and stable broadband NIR phosphors remains a major challenge. This work designed an ultra-high efficient NIR-emitting Cs2KSc0.83Ga0.1F6:0.07Cr3+ phosphor by substituting Sc3+ with a Ga3+ ion. This cationic substitution strategy enables the internal quantum efficiency of NIR emission to reach a staggering high of 98.56%, almost 100%, along with excellent thermal quenching resistance (I423K = 62.4%). The Ga3+ → Sc3+ replacement lowers the local site symmetry and overcomes the parity selection rule, rendering the electronic transitions with much larger oscillator strength and thus improved optical properties. The NIR phosphor conversion light emitting diode (pc-LED) based on Cs2KSc0.83Ga0.1F6:0.07Cr3+ demonstrated a premium photoelectric conversion efficiency of 31.46% at 40 mA. The potential of the pc-LED as a light source for night vision and anti-counterfeiting has also been demonstrated. These results highlight the phosphor's performance improvement via a cationic substitution strategy and demonstrate the practical application potential of the broadband Cr3+-based NIR phosphor in the design of high-efficiency devices.

Self-activated near-infrared (NIR) phosphors have garnered increasing attention in advanced light sources and biomedical applications owing to their simplified synthesis, cost-efficiency, non-toxicity, and especially the absence of extrinsic activator ions. However, developing efficient and thermally stable self-activated NIR phosphors remains a significant challenge for practical applications. Herein, a NIR phosphor Ca 0 · 95 LaMgSbO 6 (C 0.95 LMSO) (λex = 335 nm, λem = 710 nm) is synthesized employing a non-stoichiometric strategy, where interstitial oxygen (Oᵢ) defects are identified as the primary origin for the self-activated NIR luminescence through synergistic experimental and theoretical analyses. The controlled Ca 2+ deficiency promotes the generation of more Oᵢ defects, thereby enhancing the intensity of Oᵢ defect-induced near-infrared luminescence. Furthermore, the introduction of Bi 3+ sensitizers enables efficient energy transfer pathways, the optimized phosphor leading to exceptional photoluminescence quantum yield (68.1 %) and thermal stability (67.2 % intensity retention at 420 K). A fabricated NIR pc-LED based on Ca 0 · 95 LaMgSbO 6 :0.5 %Bi 3+ (C 0.95 LMSO: Bi 3+ ) phosphor exhibit promising performance in night vision and biomedical imaging applications. This study elucidates a defect-engineering paradigm grounded in oxygen interstitial defects, presenting a new research avenue for the development of high-performance self-activated NIR materials.

The growing demand of high-performance near-infrared (NIR) phosphors has sparked significant globe interest. In this study, we present a thermally stable NIR-emitting fluoroperovskite phosphor, KMgF 3 :Cr 3+ , synthesized via a hydrothermal method through substitution of Mg 2+ with Cr 3+ . The physicochemical and spectroscopic properties, including crystal structure, bandgap, morphology, spectral feature, and photoluminescence thermal stability, were systematically investigated. Results reveal that KMgF 3 :Cr 3+ exhibits a broadband NIR emission spanning 600-1000 nm (peaking at 780 nm) under blue light excitation and demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, retaining 86% of its room-temperature emission intensity at 423 K. Leveraging these properties, we fabricated a prototype light-emitting diode by coupling the KMgF 3 :Cr 3+ phosphor with a blue InGaN chip. The resulting device enabled high-contrast night vision imaging and clear visualization of human palm veins, highlighting its potential for advanced spectroscopic applications.
