Delignified wood (DW) retaining its microstructure has increasingly been used as an alternative to synthetic or natural fibers in the preparation of fiber-reinforced composites for novel light-transmitting, high-strength structural materials. In this study, wood laminated composite (WLC) was prepared by impregnating with cycloaliphatic epoxy resin (CAE) and laminating using DW as a continuous reinforcing fiber. Results showed that DW effectively strengthened the resin matrix , increasing the epoxy resin's strength by 25.44 %, while CAE modified the wood's opacity, achieving a transmittance of up to 74.83 %. The mechanical and optical properties of the WLC can be effectively tuned through various lamination combinations. Additionally, due to the UV curing properties of CAE and its infiltration of DW, uncured WLC had long-term shade storage capability and excellent processability . The WLC developed in this study combines good processing, mechanical, and optical properties, making it an attractive option for sustainable home decoration and lightweight structural materials.

Many phase change materials experience a change in optical properties when undergoing a phase transition, showing great potential in preparation of smart optical materials. In this work, copolymer consisted of monomer styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), and 1-octadecene (ODE) was infiltrated into treated wood to obtain a flexible transparent wood (TW) with thermo-reversible optical properties (abbreviated as SBO/TW). The introduction of ODE chains induced obvious revisable endothermic decrystallization and exothermic crystallization behaviors, which indicated that SBO/TW had revisable optical characteristic. The novel phase-change SBO 5 /TW could repeatedly turn from opaque (~23.7% of transmittance, ~98.3% of haze) to transparent (~74.9% of transmittance, ~36% of haze) with an increase in temperature, and vice versa during the cooling process. In addition, the thermal conductivity of SBO/TW was lower than 0.2 W m −1 k −1 , which is the limit value of thermal insulation material. Moreover, SBO/TW showed excellent flexibility with a high breaking elongation (~80%) and low storage modulus (good softness). This study presents a synthetic strategy to control optical properties of TW, promoting the potential application of TW as smart light controlling systems.

Transparent wood is a great potential biomass building material with good insulation and optical properties for the rapid growth building energy consumption and increasing environmental problems. Transparent wood enhanced with phase change heat storage function could effectively utilize sunlight and thermal energy to further improve energy efficiency. In this study, epoxy resin compound with phase change materials polyethylene glycol (PEG) were impregnated into the delignified wood to prepare novel transmittance energy storage wood (TESW). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope measurements proved that the TESW ternary interface performed favorable compatibility by cross-linking network structure and hydrogen bond combination, which improved the TESW anti-leakage stability and thermal energy storage efficiency. Differential scanning calorimetry experimental results combined with heat conduction mechanism showed that the energy storage performance of TESW improved with the increased PEG content. The TESW with 80 wt% PEG regulated economic optimality high latent heats of 134.1 and 122.9 J/g at 30.66 and 22.19 °C during the energy storage/release stage, respectively. Optical testing showed the TESW obtained high light transmittance up to 80.89%, this manifested that the addition of energy storage function has slight influence on the photopermeability. This research offered a novel way for green energy storage composites fabrication, and the obtained TESW exhibits advantages of energy storage capacity and optical properties are promising for building energy conservation and indoor thermal comfort improvement.

Transparent wood-based materials show great potential for energy-efficient housing and construction due to their ideal optical performances, good mechanical strengths, and low thermal conductivity. However, it still remains a great challenge to fabricate UV-blocking and strong transparent wood-based materials with isotropic optical and mechanical properties, mainly due to the natural anisotropy of wood. Herein, we describe a facile strategy to prepare transparent wood-based biocomposites by integrating delignified wood particles with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) impregnation prior to the compression treatment. This method enables biocomposites to show desirable isotropic optical and mechanical properties, easily tunable high wood component percentage and UV-blocking ability. The enhanced interfacial bonding between wood particles and PVA polymer, together with a similar refractive index, synergistically contributes to excellent performance. The resulting biocomposites (approximately thickness of 1 mm) possess isotropic optical and UV-blocking properties and have a maximum optical transmittance of 62%. The highest tensile strength and flexural strength can reach 86.8 and 158.8 MPa, respectively. Moreover, they display low thermal conductivity (0.38–0.42 W m−1 k−1) and suitable thermal stability. Therefore, this study provides a new method to optimize the properties of transparent wood-based materials for utilization in energy-saving building fields.

With the proposal of sustainable development strategy, bio-based energy storage transparent wood (TW) has shown broad application value in green buildings, cold chain transportation, and optoelectronic device fields. However, its application in most fields is limited due to its own flammability. In this study, epoxy resin, triethyl phosphate (TEP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were introduced into delignified balsa wood template by vacuum pressure impregnation, and bio-based TW/PEG/TEP integrating flame retardant, high strength and phase-change energy-storage performance was prepared. TW/PEG composites have no leakage during phase change process and their transparency is up to 95 %. Compared with TW/PEG, the shielding effect of char layer and the inhibition effect in condensed and gas phase significantly decrease the total heat release of TW/PEG/TEP. TW/PEG/TEP biocomposites still maintained a high enthalpy of phase change and a low peak melting temperature, which was conducive to its application around the area of low temperature phase change energy storage. In addition, the tensile strength of TW/PEG/TEP was nearly 4 times higher than that of DW, and its toughness was obviously enhanced. TW/PEG/TEP biocomposites conformed to the current concept of energy-saving and green development. It has the potential to replace traditional petrochemical-based materials and shows excellent application prospects in emerging fields.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a widespread indoor air pollutant, and its efficient detection is a major industrial challenge. The development of a building material with real-time and visual self-detection of FA gas is highly desirable for meeting both construction and human health demands. Herein, a luminescent transparent wood (LTW) as the building material was developed for dual-channel, real-time, and visual detection of FA gas. It was fabricated by encapsulating multicolor lignin-derived carbon dots (CDs) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) into a delignified wood framework. It exhibited 85% optical transmittance, tunable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), and ratiometric fluorescence (FL) emission. The tunable luminescence was attributed to different CD graphitization and surface functionalization. The color-responsive ratiometric FL and delayed RTP detections of FA were displayed over the range of 20–1500 μM (R2 = 0.966, LOD = 1.08 nM) and 20–2000 μM (R2 = 0.977, LOD = 45.8 nM), respectively. The LTW was also used as an encapsulation film on a UV-emitting InGaN chip to form white light-emitting diodes, indicating the feasibility as an FA-responsive planar light source. The operational notion of functional LTW can expand its applications to new fields such as a stimuli-responsive light-transmitting window or planar light sources while monitoring indoor air pollutants, temperature, and humidity.

Transparent wood has excellent optical and thermal properties and has great potential utilization value in energy-saving building materials, optoelectronic devices, and decorative materials. In this work, transparent wood with soft-/hard-switchable and shape recovery capabilities was prepared by introducing an epoxy-based polymer with a glass transition temperature of about 0 °C into the delignified wood template. The epoxy resin was well filled in the pore structure of the delignified wood, and the as-prepared wood exhibited excellent transparency; the optical transmittance and haze of the transparent wood with a thickness of 2.0 mm were approximately 70% and 95%, respectively. Because the glass transition temperature of the epoxy-based polymer was about 0 °C, the prepared transparent wood was rigid below 0 °C and flexible above °C; meanwhile, the transparent wood exhibited shape change and shape recovery properties. Incorporating optical transparency and soft-/hard-switchable ability into the transparent wood opens a new avenue for developing advanced functional wood-based materials.

Natural polymer substrates are gaining attention as substitutes for plastic substrates in electronics, aiming to combine high performance, intricate shape deformation, and environmental sustainability. Herein, natural wood veneer is converted into a transparent wood film (TWF) substrate. The combination of 3D printing and origami technique is established to create programmable wood-based origami electronics, which exhibit superior flexibility with high tensile strength (393 MPa) due to the highly aligned cellulose fibers and the formation of numerous intermolecular hydrogen bonds between them. Moreover, the flexible TWF electronics exhibit editable multiplexed configurations and maintain stable conductivity. This is attributed to the strong adhesion between the cellulose-based ink and TWF substrate by non-covalent bonds. Benefiting from its anisotropic structure, the programmability of TWF electronics is achieved through sequentially folding into predesigned shapes. This design not only promotes environmental sustainability but also introduces its customizable shapes with potential applications in sensors, microfluidics, and wearable electronics.

Optically transparent wood has emerged as a promising glazing material. Thanks to the high optical transmittance, strong mechanical properties, and excellent thermal insulation capability of transparent wood, it offers a potential alternative to glass for window applications. Recently, thermo-, electro-, and photochromic transparent woods that dynamically modulate light transmittance have been investigated to improve building energy efficiency. However, it remains challenging to widely replace windows with transparent wood because of its poor weather resistance. In this study, an environment-friendly thermochromic transparent wood film (TTWF) with thermal switching of transmittance is proposed and demonstrated. To achieve thermochromism, the bleached wood is impregnated with the vanadium dioxide (VO2)/polyvinyl alcohol composite. Due to the self-densification of cellulose microfibrils during the evaporation of solvents, the transparent wood is in the form of thin films, which can be attached on the inner face of a window to protect it from severe weather conditions, making the installation convenient and low-cost. Furthermore, the surface of VO2-TTWF is modified by octadecyltrichlorosilane to enhance the waterproof ability and achieve self-cleaning and antidust functions. The proposed VO2-TTWF shows great potential for application in energy-efficient buildings using sustainable materials with advanced optical properties (i.e., Tlum = 50.5%, ΔTsol = 3.4%, and haze = 70%) that are mechanically robust (i.e., σ = 130.6 MPa along the wood growth direction), have low-thermal conductivity (i.e., K = 0.29 W m–1 K–1 along the perpendicular direction to the wood fibers), and demonstrate hydrophobic self-cleaning and antidust functions (i.e., contact angle: 121.9°). An experiment, using a model house, showed that the VO2-TTWF attached on the inner face of the window could significantly reduce the indoor air temperature by 33.9 °C compared with a bare glass panel, proving that VO2-TTWF has potential to be applied as a new-generation energy-efficient material for smart windows.

Graphical Looking through wood : Facile fabrication of transparent wood at any thickness of any size is reported. As the picture shows, compared with 1 mm-thick transparent wood (right), the 10 mm-thick transparent wood (left) still exhibits very high optical transmittance. Moreover, the preparation efficiency is much higher than the traditional method. As an energy-saving building material, transparent wood (TW) is highly attractive because of the advantages of high optical transmittance, excellent mechanical properties, and good thermal insulation. However, the current research is limited to fabricating small-size samples in the laboratory because thick or large-size transparent wood is almost impossible to be achieved. A method that can easily and efficiently produce transparent wood with any size and any thickness is desirable for practical applications. Transparent wood made from wood fibers as a substrate allows the cell walls to bind more tightly to the impregnated polymer, resulting in high light transmittance. Compared with wood prepared by using previously reported approaches, the transparent wood prepared by this new method not only retains the same advantages but also has higher preparation efficiency and is suitable for large-scale production. Under a simulated real environment, the retainability of indoor temperature by a sample house utilizing the transparent wood reveals excellent thermal insulation of the fiber-based transparent wood owing to its low thermal conductivity, showing significant benefits in saving thermal energy.

Transparent wood (TW) has emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional glass as an energy-efficient window glazing material owing to its exceptional optical transparency and superior mechanical and thermal performances. However, it is challenging to develop the TW-based color-switching smart windows with both high optical performance and mechanical strengths. In this work, an optically switchable and mechanically robust perovskite-coated thermochromic transparent wood (PTTW) is developed for use as smart windows to achieve an effective solar modulation and thermal management. PTTW exhibits a substantial solar modulation ability Δτsol of 21.6% and a high clear-state luminous transmittance τlum of 78.0%, which enable an efficient thermal regulation while ensuring high visual clarity. PTTW also offers enhanced mechanical properties (i.e., tensile strength σtens = 71.4 MPa and flexural strength σflex = 93.1 MPa) and improved thermal properties [i.e., thermal conductivity K = 0.247 W/(m·K) and heat capacity C = 1.69 J/(g·°C)] compared to glass-based smart windows, as well as excellent performance stability (i.e., 200 heating–cooling cycles), manifesting its applicability in real building scenarios. In addition, PTTW also demonstrates a remarkable thermal-regulating performance (i.e., 5.44 °C indoor air temperature regulation) and an energy-saving potential (i.e., 12.9% heating, ventilation, and air conditioning energy savings) in Hong Kong. Overall, this study contributes to the progression toward energy-efficient and sustainable buildings.

Photochromic transparent wood (PTW) is a kind of highly desirable, green, energy-saving building material with a practical aesthetic. The application of PTW in smart windows still faces daunting challenges owing to the poor stability of photochromic reversibility and low sensitivity to sunlight. In this work, we develop a kind of prominent switchable PTW based on poplar wood (SPTW-P) that shows high sensitivity to sunlight using a new simple fabrication method. In contrast to commonly reported UV-responsive counterpart, our SPTW-P, obtained by microencapsulating active component and polymer with matched refractive index, exhibits the fastest switchable (∼1.5 s) photochromic response to sunlight, high sensitivity of color changing from colorless to peachy pink, strong mechanical strength (87.3 MPa), good transparency, and ideal cycling stability, as evidenced by the 100% maintenance of its original photochromic effect after cycling 30 times. The SPTW-P material not only shows superb UV-blocking (the highest UV-blocking value is up to 97.7%) for protecting skin, excellent thermal insulation for energy saving, good size maintenance, wonderful shape, and chemical stability (100%), but also exhibits excellent aesthetic properties (e.g., moldable aesthetic patterns). This work could promote the development of aesthetic functional transparent wood as sustainable building materials to substantially reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption.
