The separators with excellent thermal stability and electrolyte wettability are pivotal for ensuring the safety and performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a potential separator material that meets these criteria. However, the poor solubility and high melting temperature of PEEK limit its practical production and application. Herein, we report a safe and convenient strategy to fabricate lithiated poly (ether ether ketone) (LPEEK) separators via lithiation of PEEK and thermally induced phase separation below the melting point. And the pore structure of LPEEK separators can be regulated by the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone. Compared with commercial polypropylene (PP) separators and other PEEK separators, our LPEEK separators exhibit excellent thermal stability (LPEEK, almost no change at 200 °C; PP, shrink 4.4% at 100 °C) and electrolyte wettability (electrolyte contact angle: LPEEK, 0°; PP, 37.9°). Meanwhile, the LPEEK separators can still be used normally after 200 °C high-temperature treatment and are promising candidates for the LIB separators used at high temperatures. The proposed method holds promise for the industrial production of PEEK separators. Graphical abstract

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polymer composites have found widespread application due to their exceptional properties, including high specific strength and modulus, thermal stability, and chemical durability. However, since the interface serves as the bridge for load transfer between fiber and resin, the interfacial property directly affects the holistic performance of the composites. Considering the inertness of CF and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), as well as the modulus gap between them, we propose a flexible-rigid sizing agent to enhance the interfacial interaction. The sizing layers are constructed by the transition layer of polyetherimide (PEI) and the hybrid nanoparticles consisting of rare-earth coordination bonded flexible aramid nanofiber and rigid nano-TiO 2 . Calculated by density functional theory (DFT), the electron density difference (EDD) result displays the transfer of electrons between aramid nanofiber and nano-TiO 2 acted by rare-earth element. This treatment with flexible-rigid sizing agent significantly improves the surface activity, roughness, and wettability of CF. Meanwhile, the flexural strength and interlaminate shear strength (ILSS) of as-prepared CF/PEEK composites are 91.4% (810.2 MPa) and 58.2% (82.6 MPa) higher than those of unmodified CF/PEEK composites. This work presents a robust and promising approach for fabricating high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is a promising material in oral repair and orthopedic implantation field due to its stability and proper elastic modulus. However, the lack of simple but effective strategy to functionalize PEEK and improve its antibacterial function hinders its further biomedical application. In this study, a sulfonated 3D porous PEEK is fabricated via sulfonation treatment, and then decorated with the in situ synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), in which Ag + ions were loaded with high loading capacity. Surface morphology, roughness, chemical composition and hydrophilicity of all the substrates were evaluated in details, suggesting Ag + ions loaded ZIF-8 on sulfonated PEEK (SPZA) was successfully prepared. The antibacterial activity of pristine and functionalized PEEK was evaluated by inhibition zone test, spread plate assay, growth curve, and morphology of bacteria. Experimental results demonstrate that the SPZA has effectively bacteriostatic performance against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). The excellent antimicrobial activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ag + and Zn 2+ ions released continuously from SPZA. This work provides a promising route for surface modification of PEEK and offer a potential candidate for biomedical implants.

The primary challenges in utilizing thermoplastic poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) stem from its inherent lack of toughness in production settings. Traditional methods of enhancing toughness often compromise other essential properties of the material. This research focuses on optimizing the toughness of PEEK resin composites by integrating graphene oxide (GO) and silicone rubber (SR) particles into the PEEK matrix to formulate multiphase composites. A detailed investigation was carried out to assess the impact of these two distinct particles on the PEEK resin properties. In the evaluation of toughness across various composite materials, a notable enhancement was evident in the GO/PEEK, SR/PEEK, and GO/SR/PEEK ternary composites compared to the pristine PEEK. Furthermore, these composites maintained comparable stiffness and thermal resistance to standard PEEK. Tensile strength, fracture absorbed energy, and fracture toughness in GO/SR/PEEK ternary composites versus pure PEEK indicated increases of 18.38%, 174.53%, and 46.37%, respectively. Fracture analysis demonstrated that multi-particle modification methods significantly complicated toughening mechanisms, including rubber voiding, matrix shear band formation, crack deflection, and matrix plastic deformation. The findings from this study propose a viable material design principle for engineering materials that effectively balance strength and toughness. Highlights The GO/SR/PEEK composites with a balance between strength and toughness. GO and SR exert a synergistic effect on the mechanical properties balance of PEEK. The plastic deformation is promoted as the main toughening mechanism. GO and SR enhanced PEEK crystallization, improving its mechanical properties.

Achieving simple and efficient interfacial modification between carbon fiber and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been the pursuit of researchers. In this study, by comparing the nucleophilicity of various aromatic amines, a direct Schiff base reaction with polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been achieved. Based on this, a “grafting-bridging” bifunctional diazonium salt containing a phenylethylamine structure was designed and synthesized to enhance the interfacial strength through covalent bonding without the use of sizing agents. The diazonium salt was grafted onto the surface of carbon fiber through electrochemical reduction, while the PEEK resin and phenylethylamine could achieve bridging through heat treatment, thus a PEEK/CF interface with enhanced covalent bonds was constructed. The reaction and conversion rate between phenylethylamine and PEEK resin were confirmed through IR and NMR. The successful grafting of the diazonium salt on the carbon fiber was determined through XPS and cyclic voltammetry. The bridging reaction on the surface of carbon fiber was verified through XPS and the use of 6F-PEEK with characteristic elements. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the modified PEEK/CF interface reached 86.2 MPa, representing a 102.8 % improvement compared to the untreated interface of 42.5 MPa, fully demonstrating the excellent effect of the bifunctional diazonium salt.

Catalytic etherification is a new and developing method for the upgradation of pyrolysis bio-oil into high performance bio-based long-chain ethers. In this work, the application of bio-based long-chain ether oxygenated additives in diesel engines have been checked by focusing on their regulated emissions and PAH emissions. Four bio-based long-chain ethers with similar structures, including: Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether , diglyme , dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether and tripropylene glycol methyl ether have been blended with diesel fuel and tested in a small-duty diesel engine. The results showed that long-chain ethers were beneficial to the reduction of regulated emissions by comparing to pure diesel. Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether and tripropylene glycol methyl ether showed best performance among the four tested ethers. Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether could reduce 56% CO, 23% NO and 93% soot emissions, while Tripropylene glycol methyl ether could reduce 52% CO, 28% NO and 88% soot emissions. Besides, the particle sizes of soot particles from the blended fuels were also reduced. What's more, the addition of bio-based long-chain ethers could reduce particulate PAHs emissions by 39% ~ 67% and reduce gaseous PAHs emissions by 25% ~ 44%, and the PAHs toxicity was also reduced by 32% ~ 55%. This work proved that the structure of oxygen atoms evenly distributed in the chain could efficiently suppress the production of soot precursors and eventually reduce the soot emission

The revealing mechanism of side reactions is crucial for obtaining theoretical yield in industrialization when 2,5-bis(methoxymethyl)furan (BMMF) yield is above 95%. By-products catalyzed by the conventional ZSM-5 (C-ZSM-5) and hierarchical porous ZSM-5 (HP-ZSM-5) catalytic systems were different, and some key by-products were identified. Thus, possible pathways were proposed, which helps to further improve BMMF selectivity. Additionally, HP-ZSM-5 exhibited quicker reaction rate, higher BMMF yield and selectivity, and slower deactivation process. The relatively weak acidity of HP-ZSM-5 suppresses the ring-opening reaction and subsequent side reactions, and introduction of mesopores improves mass transport and slightly increases hydration of 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF).Keywords:etherification;furanic diether;heterogeneous catalysis;side reaction;ZSM-5

3,5-bis(2-benzimidazolyl) pyridine (3,5-BP) is synthesized and a series of benzimidazolyl and pyridyl-containing poly (ether ether ketone) s (mPEEK-BPs) with precise structures and high yield are prepared through a nucleophilic displacement reaction of 3,5-BP, m-dihydroxybenzene and 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone. X-ray diffraction results show that mPEEK-BPs are amorphous. All the synthesized polymers posses high glass transition temperatures ( T g = 211~270 °C) and high thermal stability ( T d5% = 506~549 °C in N 2 , 471~564 °C in air). The polymers have good solubilities in common organic solvents. With the increase of benzimidazole and pyridine units content, the thermal properties and solubility of the as-prepared polymers improved. Additionally, the resulted polymers exhibit excellent fluorescence performance and the fluorescence emission peak appears at 425 nm.

The weak interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a longstanding problem that hinders the applications of CF/PEEK composites. To solve this problem, a mixture sizing agent containing hydroxylated boron nitride (BNO) and polyetherimide (PEI) is synthesized to coat CF. In this study, BNO is synthesized via the liquid exfoliation method. The interfacial adhesion between CF and PEEK is improved using a mixture sizing layer of BNO and PEI on CF. The synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding , π-π interaction and good compatibility are evaluated to remarkably increase the miscibility and mechanical interlocking, ultimately enhancing the thermal conductivity , mechanical and tribological properties. Therefore, the PEI-BNO sizing layer on CF has proven to have great potential for high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

The application of polyimide (PI) as an effective sizing agent for carbon fiber (CF) in CF/poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) composites represents a promising approach. Here, a series of novel carboxylated waterborne PI sizing agents with different aliphatic ratios were designed to construct a rigid-flexible gradient interphase for the purpose of promoting interfacial adhesion between CF and PEEK. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the composites were optimal when the molar ratio of rigid diamine monomer to flexible diamine monomer reached 7:3. Significant augmentation was observed in various mechanical and interfacial properties, including tensile modulus (25.6 %), tensile strength (19.8 %), flexural modulus (28.5 %), flexural strength (15.8 %), impact strength (24.3 %), and IFSS (57.8 %). Furthermore, the tensile strength of the composites exhibited a greater increase (27.2 %) at elevated temperatures, thus indicating that the role of the interfacial layer was more pronounced at high temperatures. The interphase was analyzed by peak force quantitative nanomechanical imaging (PF-QNM) mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM), the results indicated the formation of a modulus transition zone between the CF and PEEK. This zone exhibited a gradient change of modulus, enabling the composite to transfer and distribute applied loads more effectively when subjected to external forces. Consequently, the findings of this study demonstrated the potential of waterborne PI sizing agents for application on CF, offering a promising avenue for surface modification of high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

In this study, a novel polysulfone (PSf) with pendant tertiary amine groups was synthesized and this functionalized PSf could be further crosslinked based on a facile reaction between tertiary amine and 1,3-dibromopropane (DBP). The synthesis of this new polymer and the occurrence of the crosslinking reaction were evidenced by FTIR, 1 H NMR and solid state 13 C NMR spectroscopy. The crosslinked PSf and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) were mixed together to fabricate ultrafiltration membranes by the phase inversion method. All the composite membranes exhibited improved hydrophilicity over the pristine PSf membrane, attributed to the presence of sulfonic acid groups and / or quaternary ammonium groups. The crosslinked membrane demonstrated superior permeability and antifouling properties than the uncrosslinked membrane due to the conversion of tertiary amine groups to more hydrophilic quaternary ammonium groups. In particular, the membrane with crosslinked PSf∶SPEEK ratio of 1∶1 showed the most favorable performance, including almost 3.5 times of pure water flux of the pristine PSf membrane and 97% of flux recovery ratio. Meanwhile, the crosslinked membrane maintained superior dimensional stability and mechanical properties compared to the uncrosslinked membrane, which is a major challenge faced by highly hydrophilic polymers , because of the restricted molecular chain movement caused by the crosslinking network and electrostatic interaction . All the resultant membranes were fully characterized, including surface properties, morphologies, mechanical strength , thermal stability, permeability, and antifouling properties.
