Metal-support interaction (MSI) is an efficient strategy to modulate the distribution of active metal with different electronic states over the oxide-supported metal catalysts. However, the intrinsic correlation between the intensity of MSI and the electronic structure of supported metals remains inadequate. In this work, the intensity of MSI over the Cu/Y 2 O 3 catalyst was tuned by the calcination temperature, which regulated the distribution of Cu 0 , Cu + and Cu 2+ species. The Cu/Y 2 O 3 catalyst with the highest amount of Cu + exhibits the superior performance of reverse water–gas shift reaction. Due to the enhanced H 2 activation and promoted charge transfer at the interfacial Cu + /Y 2 O 3 site based on the experimental characterizations, the CO formation rate reached 220 mmol CO g cat −1 h −1 at 500 °C. The present work provides an efficient way to regulate the supported metal species with the specific electronic state.

Manipulating the growth behavior of nano-sized supports is proved to have extremely favorable effects for optimizing the performance of hybrid catalysts. Herein, we investigated the growth kinetics of MgFe2O4 and revealed its size-dependent behavior of Fe occupancies at octahedral and tetrahedral sites and CO oxidation catalytic activity for the first time. MgFe2O4, with particle size ranging from 8.1 nm to 190.0 nm, was prepared via a sol–gel method after post-annealing treatment at a temperature from 400 °C to 1000 °C. The growth of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles obeys the Ostwald ripening mechanism with the quantitative formula D5 = 2.08 × 1014t exp(−122.13/RT). The systematic characteristics show that the redox behavior and O2 activation of hybrid catalysts of Pt/MgFe2O4-T rely on the grain size of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles. The Pt/MgFe2O4-500 catalyst with a support size of 20.6 nm exhibits a remarkable CO oxidation performance due to its abundant chemisorbed oxygen species on the surface and enhanced metal–support interactions among all examined catalysts. Our findings offer significant insight into the size-dependent structure, redox ability and oxygen activation properties of spinel materials and can greatly impact future exploration of novel materials in heterogeneous catalysis.

Herein, we report the excellent De-NO x performance of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSM) perovskite-supported Pd catalysts (Pd-LSM) in alternating lean-burn/fuel-rich atmospheres using C 3 H 6 as reductant and describe the in situ activation of the Pd catalysts via metal-support interaction (MSI) tuning. The NO x reduction conversion of the Pd-LSM catalyst increased significantly from 56.1% to 90.1% and the production of N 2 O was suppressed. Our results demonstrated that this behavior was mainly attributed to the in situ transformation of Pd 2+ into Pd 0 during the reaction. The generated Pd 0 species could readily activate the C 3 H 6 reductant and achieve an eight-fold higher turnover frequency than Pd 2+ for the reduction of NO x . Moreover, excessive MSIs inhibited the in situ generation of Pd 0 , and thereby, lowered the De-NO x activity of the catalyst even at high Pd dispersion. In addition, the Pd-LSM catalysts exhibited much higher S tolerance than conventional Al 2 O 3 -supported catalysts. Our study provides a new approach for analyzing and designing highly active metal catalysts operated under dynamic alternating oxidizing/reducing atmospheric conditions.

CO oxidation is the primary approach for eliminating CO from incomplete combustion, and the catalytic performance is dependent on the structure of catalysts. Herein, to explore the structure promotion in the CO oxidation reaction, polymethyl methacrylate was synthesized as the hard template to fabricate the three-dimensional ordered microporous (3DOM) Au/CeO 2 and compared the catalytic performance with the Au/CeO 2 rod catalyst. The 3DOM Au/CeO 2 catalyst could realize complete CO oxidation at 90 °C while 110 °C for Au/CeO 2 rod catalyst. The 3DOM Au/CeO 2 catalyst also showed outstanding stability for 60 h reaction. The achieved high performance could be attributed to the pore structures and the better metal-support interaction that facilitates abundant oxygen vacancies . Additionally, the Au distribution and oxygen vacancies promoted by the macropores structures were discovered using a series of characterizations. This work highlights the promotion of oxygen vacancies and metal-support interaction by 3DOM structure in CO oxidation reaction.

Three-way catalysis represents a pivotal technology for converting automobile exhaust pollutants into non-toxic gases. Substituting some noble metals with transition metals is considered a promising way to reduce catalyst costs. Herein, we have investigated the catalytic potential of different configurations of Pd-Cu catalysts prepared by impregnation (PdCu/MA), sol-gel (PdCu-MA), impregnation with physical mixing (Pd/Cu/MA) and sol-gel with physical mixing (Pd/Cu-MA) to modify the interaction of Pd/Cu and MgAl1.82Ce0.18O4 (MA) spinel in this comparative study. The different structures in these catalysts lead to different catalytic performances. PdCu/MA exhibits the best three-way catalytic performance, which owe to the small-sized PdCu particles with high Pd2+ content (45.3%) and optimal interaction of Pd/Cu particles and MgAl1.82Ce0.18O4 support. Furthermore, comprehensive CO-DRIFTS, H2-TPR, and O2-TPD analyses discover that the metal-support interaction is beneficial to enhance the catalytic performance in three-way catalysis. Overall, we demonstrated that the interaction between PdCu bimetals and support can regulate the electronic state of Pd, thereby enhancing the use and efficiency of noble metals.

By constructing Ni-O-Zr interfaces, oxygen vacancies were generated and the interaction between the metal and the support in the catalyst was significantly enhanced. This synergy between Ni 0 and oxygen vacancies greatly boosted the catalytic activity of Ni 50 /ZrO 2 in the hydrogen storage system. Experimental tests showed that the MgH 2 + 10 wt%Ni 50 /ZrO 2 composite had a reduced initial hydrogen desorption temperature of 194.5 °C and released 6.30 wt%H 2 within 10 min at 265 °C. Notably, this composite exhibited excellent low-temperature hydrogen absorption kinetics, initiating absorption at 29 °C and nearly completing it (6.67 wt%H 2 ) at 134 °C. Furthermore, the activation energy for the modified MgH 2 had been substantially decreased from 76.66 kJ/mol to 32.01 kJ/mol (absorption) and 155.84 kJ/mol to 83.93 kJ/mol (desorption), respectively. The presence of oxygen vacancies at the Ni-O-Zr interface significantly amplified the catalyst’s charge conduction capabilities and provided a promising avenue for the development of effective catalysis for robust hydrogen storage.

Cu/ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel is a promising catalyst for CO 2 -to-methanol due to its dual-site H 2 activation. However, controlling surface properties and metal-support interactions (MSI) through the coordination environment of spinel cations remains underexplored. Herein, the occupancy of Zn 2+ and Al 3+ cations in Cu/ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel is fine-tuned by manipulating the calcination atmosphere. More disordered structures (AlO 4 and ZnO 6 ) observed on the CZA-Ar catalyst benefit the creation of oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups, which facilitate the formation of highly dispersed small-sized Cu species. This enhances MSI and hydrogen spillover effects, thereby boosting CO 2 conversion and the space-time yield (STY) of methanol. High-pressure in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results reveal that the crucial formate intermediates form at tetrahedral sites in ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel, with more Al-HCOO - species observed on the CZA-Ar catalyst due to the formation of AlO 4 . This work advances the understanding of spinel catalysts in CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) plays a critical role in enhancing the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts. Currently, effective approaches to enhance the SMSI effect in supported electrocatalysts still need to be developed, and a comprehensive atomic-level understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms remains unclear. In this study, a novel facet-junction strategy is proposed to enhance the SMSI between the loaded Ru atoms and the Co 3 O 4 support. By modulating the ratio of exposed facet for (111)/(100) crystal plane in Co 3 O 4 , the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance can be dramatically enhanced by 560% and can achieve a Pt-like HER activity with the overpotential of 45 mV. Detailed analysis with atomic-resolution integrated differential phase contrast (iDPC)-scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), atomic-resolution high angle annular dark field (HADDF)-STEM, and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) further proved that with proper (111)/(100) crystal plane ratio, the intensified charge distribution near the facet-junction region would modify the electronic structure around the active sites. This work provides new insights to enhance the SMSI and will contribute to the rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting.

The Ru/TiO2 catalyst serves as a representative metal/support interaction system with tunable reactivity in catalytic processes. Herein, by varying the metal loadings of Ru from 0.5 to 4 wt % to regulate the size of Ru on support, the catalytic performances of Ru/TiO2 catalysts in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) can be further refined. An improved FTS activity is acquired when metal size increases, while long carbon-chain products (C5+ hydrocarbons) prefer to be generated from the small-sized Ru catalyst. With intensive characterizations, it is indicated that the coating of TiOx on Ru greatly depends on the size of Ru, with the TiOx overlayer being enhanced on small Ru metal particles. This size-dependent metal/support interaction on Ru/TiOx therefore leads to a varied reduction degree of Ru, which possesses an alterable capability toward CHx transformation on Ru. As a result, the small-sized Ru/TiOx catalyst shows a preference toward the chain growth in FTS by suppressing the competitive methanation on Ru/TiOx. Our results demonstrate that the size-dependent metal/support interaction plays an important role on determining the catalytic performance of Ru/TiOx in FTS, and it can be used as an effective method to tune the reactivity of metal nanoparticles in catalytic processes.

Tuning Strong Metal-support Interactions (SMSI) is a key strategy to obtain highly active catalysts, but conventional methods usually enable TiO x encapsulation of noble metal components to minimize the exposure of noble metals. This study demonstrates a catalyst preparation method to modulate a weak encapsulation of Pt metal nanoparticles (NPs) with the supported TiO 2 , achieving the moderate suppression of SMSI effects. The introduction of silica inhibits this encapsulation, as reflected in the characterization results such as XPS and HRTEM, while the Ti4 + to Ti3 + conversion due to SMSI can still be found on the support surface. Furthermore, the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) as a probe reaction revealed that once this encapsulation behavior was suppressed, the adsorption capacity of the catalyst for small molecules like H 2 and CO was enhanced, which thereby improved the catalytic activity and facilitated the hydrogenation of CAL. Meanwhile, the introduction of SiO 2 also changed the surface structure of the catalyst, which inhibited the occurrence of the acetal reaction and improved the conversion efficiency of C=O and C=C hydrogenation. Systematic manipulation of SMSI formation and its consequence on the performance in catalytic hydrogenation reactions are discussed.

The strong metal–support interaction (MSI) has been widely attributed to enhanced catalytic activity. However, this attribution might be wrong in catalytic ozonation, since MSI that is too strong might impede the activation of electron-poor ozone molecules. Herein, we reported a strategy to subtly modulate the Mn–O–Si interaction by intercalating the carbon film between the silica support and active manganese oxide. When using MnOx/0.5C/SiO2 with the moderate MSI as a catalyst in the catalytic ozonation of refractory paracetamol (PCM), 91.1 ± 2.4% of PCM was removed within 30 min, about 30% higher than that using the catalyst of MnOx/SiO2 with a strong MSI. Moreover, the reaction rate reached 8.01 × 10–2 min–1, 2.2 and 1.3 times that with MnOx/SiO2 and MnOx/1C/SiO2, respectively. Importantly, further integration of MnOx/0.5C/SiO2 into membrane filtration achieved high rejections of PCM (>94.3%) under various realistic water scenarios during a continuous 12 h operation, demonstrating strong resistance to environmental matrices interference. Experimental and theoretical evidence revealed that the moderate MSI resulted in the high dispersion of active MnOx nanoclusters in the size of 2.3–4.4 nm and promoted the adsorption of ozone over MnOx and its dissociation into surface *O, •OH, •O2–, and 1O2 for decontamination. As a constructive work, this study revealed the significance of MSI in catalytic ozonation and offered a simple regulation method for constructing active interfaces of metal-supported catalysts.
