One-Pot Transformation of Cellulose to Sugar Alcohols over Acidic Metal Phosphates Combined with Ru/C

Qi-Ying Liu,Yu-He Liao,Tie-Jun Wang,Chi-Liu Cai,Qi Zhang,Noritatsu Tsubaki,Long-Long Ma

ZrP with large surface, mesoporous volume, and size was prepared. Its catalytic performance was evaluated in hydrolytic hydrogenation of cellulose to sorbitol/mannitol combined with commercial Ru/C. A significantly enhanced sorbitol/mannitol yield was obtained as compared with that of the water-soluble acidic phosphates and buffer solution of potassium acid phthalate combined with the same Ru/C. The enhanced yield was attributed to the Lewis and Brönsted acid on ZrP surface improving the surface’s absorption and activation for cellulose and accelerating the rate-determined hydrolysis step. The maximal sorbitol/mannitol yield of 63% and 81% could be obtained by using microcrystalline and ball milling cellulose as the feedstock, respectively. The ZrP combined with Ru/C was adaptable to the high concentrated cellulose and obtained 5.8 wt % of sorbitol/mannitol concentration. The remarkably enhanced cellulose hydrolysis by ZrP sharply decreased the use of Ru/C, which is significant for the essential application.

The adaptable effect of Ru on hydrogen sorption characteristics of the MgH2 system

Darvaish Khan,Jianxin Zou,Saz Muhammad,Niaz Ali Khan,Shah Saud,Subrata Panda

In this study, a MgH 2 –Ru composite is prepared by mechanical ball milling of MgH 2 and Ru powders. The microstructural analysis revealed the uniform distribution of Ru nanoparticles in the MgH 2 matrix and the formation of intermetallic compounds (i.e. Mg 6.2 Ru and Mg 1.5 Ru) after dehydrogenation of the composite. The substantial improvements in the de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 are due to the adjustable catalytic role of Ru under low temperature and pressure conditions. MgH 2 –Ru composite started to release hydrogen at an onset temperature of 300 °C, much lower than the mechanically milled pure MgH 2 (350 °C). Hydrogen absorption of the MgH 2 –Ru composite is relatively fast at 350 °C and stored 6.1 wt% in 5 min. At the same temperature, the hydrogenated MgH 2 –Ru composite released all stored hydrogen in less than 5 min. Compared with the catalyst-free MgH 2 , the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activation energies of the MgH 2 –Ru composite are reduced to 65.12 ± 2.4 kJ/mol H 2 , and 97.46 ± 4.15 kJ/mol H 2 , respectively. In addition, it further demonstrated how the reversible transformation of Mg–Ru intermetallic phases induces the thermodynamic destabilization of the MgH 2 system. The presence of Ru not only facilitated the breaking of the Mg–H bond but also provided very good catalytic interfaces for enhanced de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 .

The Promotional Effect of Na on Ru for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Bingxin Guo,Chengfei Zhao,Yingshuang Zhou,Junjie Guo,Zhongzhe Wei,Jing Wang

Alkali metals, as ideal electron donors, can effectively regulate the valence state distribution of the host metals. Nevertheless, no studies have reported the application of alkali metal promoters in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we designed an efficient and wide pH-universal hydrogen evolution catalyst that utilizes alkali metal to control the valence, size, and dispersion of Ru NPs. The experimental results reveal that the alkali metal additives contribute to the dispersion and stabilization of metallic Ru. More importantly, the interaction between Na and Ru regulates the distribution of Ru valence states and helps to form more active components of Ru0. Additionally, NaCl functioned as an in situ template to assist the construction of a porous carbon skeleton promotes mass transfer and exposes more active sites, further promoting the synergistic effect of Ru and Na. As a result, the optimal Ru0.3/C−800 delivers high efficiency for HER with an overpotential as low as 29 mV in 1.0 M KOH and 83 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4under 10 mA cm−2. Particularly, the catalytic performance of Ru0.3/C−800 even outbalanced that of commercial Pt/C in an alkaline medium. This rational construction strategy opens up new avenues for obtaining superior pH-universal electrocatalysts. Keywords:alkali metal;Ru based;hydrogen evolution reaction;wide-range pH;promotional effect

Catalytic Conversion of Sugars into Lactic Acid via a RuOx/MoS2 Catalyst

Zongling Li,Pengfei Wu,Jifeng Pang,Xianquan Li,Shangru Zhai,Mingyuan Zheng

The catalytic transformation of sugars into lactic acid has shown great potential for the scalable utilization of renewable biomass. Herein, RuOx/MoS2catalysts were synthesized with the assistance of CaO for the one-pot conversion of glucose to lactic acid. Under the reaction conditions of 120 °C and 1 MPa O2, a 96.6% glucose conversion and a 54.3% lactic acid selectivity were realized in the one-pot catalytic reaction, with relatively high stability after four successive cycles. This catalytic system was also effective for the conversion of many other carbohydrate substrates, such as fructose, xylose and cellulose (selectivity 68.9%, 78.2% and 50.6%, respectively). According to catalyst characterizations and conditional experiments, the highly dispersed RuOxspecies on the surface of MoS2, together with OH−, promoted isomerization, retro-aldol condensation, dehydration and hydration reactions, resulting in a relatively high lactic acid yield for sugar conversions. Keywords:glucose;catalyst;lactic acid;ruthenium;calcium

Trace Pt Induced electron-enriched Ru to boost interfacial water-activation for alkaline hydrogen generation under industrial condition

Qihao Wang,Yusen Chen,Xingchao Zang,Hongdong Li,Weiping Xiao,Yingxia Zong,Guangying Fu,Jinsong Wang,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

A breakdown of the Sabatier principle is essential for the substantial improvement of the catalytic performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This can be achieved by alternating the support and electronic metal support interaction (EMSI). Herein, ZrO 2 supported Ru and Pt (Pt-Ru/ZrO 2 ) with EMSI is designed through ultrafast microwave-plasma (60 s) approach. Pt-Ru/ZrO 2 requires only 33 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline HER, which is 6.3 times the mass activity of the benchmark Pt/C. HER performance is enhanced in the presence of EMSI because it optimizes the hydrogen adsorption and desorption processes, improves charge transfer and improves the kinetics of water dissociation. In addition, the assembled anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis cell maintains long-term stability for more than 150 h at 1 A cm −2 , demonstrating a sustained catalytic effect. This work offers a novel design approach for developing electrocatalysts with remarkable performance when subjected to high-current–density conditions of industrial scenarios

Crystal phase dependent hydrogen spillover effect in Ru/WO3 for hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis

Jiayu Xu,Fulin Yang,Xia Guo,Shuli Wang,Ligang Feng

Supported Ru nanoparticles with high utilization are promising for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but the effect of the crystal phase engineering of supports on their performance remains unclear. Here, the impact of the crystal phase of the support on the catalytic activity of Ru was probed by anchoring Ru nanoparticles onto precisely synthesized hexagonal (WO 3 -H), orthorhombic (WO 3 -O), and monoclinic (WO 3 -M) supports followed by thorough evaluation for HER. Among them, WO 3 -H demonstrated superior performance by providing enhanced Ru anchoring and uniform dispersion, maximizing active site availability. A critical finding is the small work function difference (Δ W F ) between Ru and WO 3 -H, which minimizes interfacial charge accumulation and facilitates efficient hydrogen spillover, thereby accelerating HER kinetics. In contrast, WO 3 -O and WO 3 -M exhibited larger Δ W F and less effective Ru dispersion, resulting in a larger hydrogen spillover barrier and suboptimal hydrogen adsorption/desorption dynamics. As a result, Ru/WO 3 -H exhibited the best performance, achieving an overpotential of 43.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 49.1 mV dec −1 . This work highlights the critical role of the crystal phase in optimizing the intrinsic catalytic activity of catalysts, offering new insights for designing efficient HER catalysts.

Ruthenium Complex Hydride Catalyst as a Platform for Ammonia Synthesis: The Effect of Alkali or Alkaline Earth Elements

Qianru Wang,Hong Wen,Yeqin Guan,Shengyuan Zhang,Wenbo Gao,Jianping Guo,Ping Chen

Mild-condition ammonia synthesis from N2 and H2 is a long-sought-after scientific goal and a practical need, especially for the intensively pursued ammonia production using renewable H2. However, effective ammonia production on conventional transition metal catalyst surfaces is unattainable because of the limitations imposed by scaling relations. Here, we reported a series of ruthenium complex hydrides AMn[RuHm] (AM = Li, Na, K, Ca, or Ba) capable of catalyzing ammonia synthesis under mild conditions, which exhibit universal and high activities that far exceed the benchmark Cs–Ru/MgO catalyst. Importantly, their catalytic behaviors depend on the identity of AM cation and follow a trend that is different from the electronegativity-dependent one observed in conventional promoted Ru metal catalysts. Detailed investigations disclose that such an AM effect is a consequence of the differences in interaction strengths between AM cations and the reacting NxHy species, which can be quantitatively mapped out by using the NxHy adsorption energies as the descriptor. Based on the knowledge of the unique configuration and synergized scenario in the Ru complex hydride catalyst system, we propose a strategy for the development of efficient catalysts toward ammonia synthesis, that is designing active site motifs with multicomponent and electron-rich characters.

The effect of physical morphology and the chemical state of Ru on the catalytic properties of Ru–carbon for cellulose hydrolytic hydrogenation

Gang Zhang,Tong Chen,Yi Zhang,Tao Liu,Gongying Wang

Ru–carbon catalysts with different physical morphologies and chemical states of Ru were prepared by different methods and used to catalyze the hydrolytic hydrogenation of cellulose at high temperatures. The physical morphology of Ru particles and the chemical state of Ru significantly influenced the catalytic performance. The Ru nanoparticles in Ru@MC prepared by the in situ carbothermal reduction method exhibited a special chemical state due to the strong interaction with carbon. The special structure could not only prevent the growth of Ru particles but also enhance the hydrogen spillover effect and improve the hydrogenation efficiency. Among the Ru–carbon catalysts, Ru@MC showed the best catalytic performance with a 72.4% yield of sorbitol. Furthermore, the embedded structure of Ru@MC stabilized the Ru nanoparticles, and the catalyst could be reused at least 6 times.

Bifunctional fluorine doped Ru/RuO2 clusters with dynamic electron modification and strong metal-support interaction boost proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer

Yue Shi,Hongfu Miao,Jianyang Gao,Feifei Liu,Ying Deng,Hongdong Li,Jingqi Chi,Caixia Li,Fusheng Liu,Jianping Lai,Lei Wang

The sluggish kinetics and inherent instability over the Ru/RuO 2 clusters are still enormous challenges in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer. Herein, we innovatively report synergistic modulation of dynamic electron modification and strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) to activate and stabilize bifunctional fluorine doped Ru/RuO 2 clusters anchored on carbon nanotube (CNT), thus achieving efficient and stable acidic overall water splitting. Theoretical and experimental studies found that surface metal-fluorine modification layer could dynamically regulate the interfacial electronic environment to stabilize and activate multiple active Ru species; and the SMSI between Ru/RuO 2 cluster and CNT maintains stable electronic environment for dynamic electron modification and avoids migrating or shedding of active species in acidic environment. Therefore, the PEM electrolyzer assembled with optimal F 5.5 -Ru/RuO 2 @CNT can operate stably for 100 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 , which is the first time that bifunctional Ru-based nanocatalysts applied to PEM device at a high current density.

Catalytic oxidation of methyl bromide using ruthenium-based catalysts

Xiaolong Liu,Junlin Zeng,Jian Wang,Wenbo Shi,Tingyu Zhu

Ruthenium-based catalysts Ru/TiO2, Ru/SiO2, Ru/γ-Al2O3, and Ru/ZrO2 were prepared and evaluated for CH3Br oxidation, and Ru/TiO2 showed better catalytic performance than the other samples. The product yields and selectivities were also studied. The thermal stability was examined with a 48 h on-stream test. The influence of water vapor on the catalytic oxidation of CH3Br was studied at 210 °C and 230 °C, and it was found that the inhibition effect weakened with the increase in temperature. Additionally, Ru/TiO2 was also employed in the catalytic oxidation of CO, benzene, methyl acetate, and multi-pollutants of simulated PTA offgas.

Pressure-Induced Suppression of Static Disorder and Lattice Distortion in Pyrochlore Bi2Ru2O7

Xinmiao Gai,Jia Qu,Nan Zhang,Cun You,Fuqing Zhang,Tao Lv,Qiang Tao,Pinwen Zhu,Yan Li,Xin Wang

Bi2Ru2O7 is a weak metal pyrochlore with static disorder from lone-pair electrons. The suppression of static disorder can be observed by in situ Raman spectroscopy, and the abnormal turning point in resistivity can be found at high pressure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of bismuth and ruthenium, low-temperature magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization curve were studied, indicating that there were different valence states between bismuth and ruthenium. The in situ high-pressure structure evolution and conductivity in Bi2Ru2O7 were investigated up to 30.4 and 32.7 GPa, respectively. The electronic structure evolution was studied by first-principles calculations up to 30.0 GPa. Some of the Raman peaks related to static disorder were suppressed at around 2.5 and 18.0 GPa, respectively. The [RuO6] octahedron was compressed and distorted with pressure, and the triangular distortion increased in the range of 18.0 and 24.4 GPa. The high-pressure resistivity was measured by the four probe method. It slowly decreased at first and then increased slowly after 2.5 GPa due to the effects of static disorder and the applying pressure. After 18.0 GPa, the resistivity increased rapidly because of the pressure-induced lattice distortion, which led to the weakening of the conductivity of the sample under high pressure. All observations showed that the lattice distortion was influenced by the combined effects of static disorder and pressure before 18.0 GPa, which caused the resistivity to decrease first and then increase. As static disorder is suppressed, Bi2Ru2O7 is close to standard pyrochlore and the conductivity after 18.0 GPa, which is consistent with the theoretical calculation results of band gap.

Sustainable ammonia and amines from chitin

Hao Huang,Shengyao Liu,Xucong Guo,Huoyan Jiang,Yihong Cai,Zixuan Tan,Guangping Zhou,Xiaolan Cai,Min Zhuang,Shaoqu Xie

Efforts are underway to explore alternative methods to the Haber-Bosch process for sustainable ammonia production, while the potential for ammonia extraction from natural nitrogenous biomass is under-exploited. Here, a synergistic catalytic strategy involving acid and modified Ru-based catalysts is communicated for the direct production of amines and ammonia from chitin. Phosphoric acid promotes the cleavage of ether bonds in biomass polymers and also serves to protect amino groups from being removed. Selective hydrogenation, deoxygenation, and amination can be achieved by controllably adjusting the ratio of Ru 0 /Ru n+ . The utilization of nitrogen atoms in chitin can reach up to 95 % (21 % amines, 74 % ammonium), and the catalytic process is applicable to waste shrimp shells. This study demonstrates the possibility of efficient production of nitrogen-containing compounds from abundant biopolymers.
