Fabrication of Sb-based alloys/carbon nanofibers with uniform dispersion as anode material for high efficiency sodium storage

Zhe Wang,Zhengpeng Zhu,Kai Xue,Xingmei Guo,Yuanjun Liu,Xiangjun Zheng,Qianqian Fan,Zhongyao Duan,Qinghong Kong,Junhao Zhang

To solve the serious volume expansion problem of Sb-based anode materials in the alloying/dealloying process, a strategy combining electrospinning and hydrogen reduction is proposed to prepare a series of Sb-based alloys/carbon nanofiber composites (SbM/CNFs, M=Co, Zn, Ni). Inactive elements are innovatively introduced to form Sb based alloys with enhanced stability. The results show that the content of SbCo nanoparticles is high to 69.12% (mass), which are uniformly dispersed in carbon fibers. When evaluated as anode material for SIBs, SbCo/CNFs anode exhibits excellent sodium storage capacity, the initial discharge capacity is 580.0 mA·h·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , which can hold 483.5 mA·h·g −1 after 100 cycles. Even the current density increases to 1.0 A·g −1 , the specific capacity still maintains at 344.5 mA·h·g −1 after 150 cycles. The improved sodium storage capacity is attributed to the synergistic effect of conductive carbon fibers and SbCo nanoparticles with uniform dispersion, which not only provide excellent electronic conductivity, but also enhance structural stability to reduce volume change.

Identifying the plateau sodium storage behavior of hard carbon through the spin state

Bin Wang,Yazhen Yao,Wanli Wang,Yujie Xu,Yi Sun,Qiang Li,Han Hu,Mingbo Wu

Hard carbon has emerged as a promising anode material for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries, owing to its abundant precursor sources and remarkable reversible charge storage capacity. The key to achieving an extended sodium storage capacity lies in the plateau capacity largely associated with the closed-pore structure, yet a comprehensive understanding in this area remains incomplete. In our study, we utilized electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra to discern the spin state of unpaired electrons within hard carbon materials, enabling the identification of sodium storage plateau regions. Hard carbon anodes with plateau capacity predominantly exhibit delocalized spins, evident in the EPR spectrum by limited spin density and a linewidth exceeding 100 G. These spins originate from the extended aromatic structure within small-sized but curved nano-graphite and the closed-pore walls, which are crucial for plateau capacity. Conversely, hard carbon anodes exclusively possessing slope capacity are characterized by localized spins, presenting a typical narrow and intense Lorentzian EPR signal. These localized spins arise from the edge defects of the nano-graphite structure, serving as favourable sites for sodium adsorption. Our development of a methodology to discern hard carbon plateau capacity behavior based on EPR spectra presents a facile and rapid approach for advancing high-performance hard carbon materials.

Oxygen vacancies and phase tuning of self-supported black TiO2-X nanotube arrays for enhanced sodium storage

Jun Chen,Yanlong Fu,Fang Sun,Zhengguang Hu,Xing Wang,Ting Zhang,Fengshou Zhang,Xiaoling Wu,Haisheng Chen,Guoan Cheng,Ruiting Zheng

Defect engineering and phase engineering are two powerful strategies for regulating the intrinsically sluggish electronic and ionic kinetics of TiO 2 to enhance sodium storage. However, synergetic control of the defects and phases in TiO 2 nanomaterials remains a major challenge. Herein, we clarify the phase and defect synergetic evolution regularities of self-supported TiO 2-X nanotube arrays (TNTAs) with different annealing processes, which amazingly demonstrate different characteristics from traditional TiO 2 nanoparticles. The phase composition and oxygen vacancy (OV) concentration tuning strategies are combined to systematically clarify how these two important synergetic factors influence the sodium storage properties of TNTAs. In particular, unique porous-wall black amorphous TNTAs annealed at 300 ℃ in air and core-shell black anatase TNTAs annealed at 600 ℃ in N 2 show the best sodium storage performance among all amorphous and anatase samples, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) kinetics analysis demonstrates that both pseudocapacitive and diffusion-controlled charge storage mechanism exist in the TNTAs. The correlations of the pseudocapacitive capacity and the diffusion-controlled capacity with the OV concentrations and phases are clarified in detail. Both the pseudocapacitive capacity and diffusion-controlled capacity are enhanced in samples with high OV concentration in the amorphous and anatase TNTAs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that a high OV density corresponds to a low sodium insertion energy and high capacity, which matches the experimental results.

Oxygen-bridging and air-etching: Advanced pore-regulation engineering in hard carbons for optimized low-voltage plateau capacity

Lixin Bai,Juan Chen,Yi Zhang,Zheng Yi,Yuansen Xie,Maowen Xu,Yuruo Qi

The intrinsic sodium storage performance of hard carbons is fundamentally governed by its structure attributes, which are primarily shaped by the precursor material. Therefore, a direct manipulation of precursors at the molecular level offers considerable flexibility in engineering hard carbon architectures. This study introduces a straightforward and effective pre-carbonization approach to modulate the molecular configuration and functional groups within celluloses, employing both oxygen-bridging and air-etching to stimulate the development of closed pores during carbonization. These closed pores not only facilitate the transport of sodium ions but also serve as active sites for sodium storage, resulting in a hard carbon with an impressive specific capacity of 421.1 mA h g −1 and a substantial low-voltage plateau capacity of 312.8 mA h g −1 . Extensive research has elucidated the formation mechanism of closed pores as well as its correlation with low-voltage plateau capacity, which will greatly forward the rational design of high-performance hard carbon anodes for next-generation sodium ion batteries.

Construction of self-supported TiO2 nanotube arrays with hybrid point defect engineering: A bifunctional anode for Li+/Na+ storage

Wei Cao,Ziwei Chen,Maolin Yang,Hanxi Guan,Xing Cheng,Ming Zhang,Feng Lin,Yinguo Xiao,Min Ling,Chengdu Liang,Jun Chen

Point defect engineering has garnered widespread application for enhancing the dynamic behavior of anode materials and improving electrochemical performance. Herein, a hybrid point defect strategy is proposed in Ti-based oxide materials to achieve N doping induced oxygen vacancies (OVs) and subsequently accelerated electron mobility and perform better diffusion kinetics. This methodology culminates in the fabrication of self-supported nanotube arrays comprising N-doped OVs-rich TiO 2 (denoted as N-TNTs). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical characterizations validate that, hybrid point defects lead to high electron mobility and perform better diffusion kinetics, as well as higher Li + /Na + ions adsorption energy barrier and diffusion energy barrier, which in turn improves the rate performance and cycling stability. This research provides a forward-looking and feasible strategy for the application of point defect engineering in anode materials.

Self-assembled high-entropy Prussian blue analogue nanosheets enabling efficient sodium storage

Yunjiang Gu,Yonglin Lu,Pengfei Dai,Xin Cao,Yiming Zhou,Yawen Tang,Zhiwei Fang,Ping Wu

High entropy material (HEM) has emerged as an appealing material platform for various applications, and specifically, the electrochemical performances of HEM could be further improved through self-assembled structure design. However, it remains a big challenge to construct such high-entropy self-assemblies primarily due to the compositional complexity. Herein, we propose a bottom-up directional freezing route to self-assemble high-entropy hydrosols into porous nanosheets. Taking Prussian blue analogue (PBA) as an example, the simultaneous coordination-substitution reactions yield stable high-entropy PBA hydrosols. During subsequent directional freezing process, the anisotropic growth of ice crystals could guide the two-dimensional confined assembly of colloidal nanoparticles, resulting in high-entropy PBA nanosheets (HE-PBA NSs). Thanks to the high-entropy and self-assembled structure design, the HE-PBA NSs manifests markedly enhanced sodium storage kinetics and performances in comparison with medium/low entropy nanosheets and high entropy nanoparticles.

Pore structure engineering of wood-derived hard carbon enables their high-capacity and cycle-stable sodium storage properties

Weifeng Jing,Mei Wang,Ying Li,Hai-Ru Li,Huinian Zhang,Shengliang Hu,Huiqi Wang,Yan-Bing He

The pore structural designability of wood-derived hard carbons (WDHCs) lays an optimal foundation for acquiring a cost-efficient and green anode material for sodium-ion batteries. Here, a WDHCs material was reported for high-capacity and cycling-stable sodium storage through a pore forming-opening strategy. Associated with the natural holey texture of wood, the WDHCs displays a hierarchical pore structure by a precise chemical treatment and a high-temperature carbonization, creating the straight channels and plentiful closed nanopores. This well-constructed channel structure is conducive to the penetration of electrolyte and the transport of sodium ions. The closed nanopores constructed by the curved graphene layers are gradually unfolded upon cycling, thus providing higher reversible capacity in the platform zone. The surface-controlled pseudocapacitive reaction favored ultrafast ion transport mainly contributes to sodium storage capacity. As a result, the developed optimal anodes harvest a high sodium storage capacity of 439 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , and excellent long-term cycling stability of 248 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 over 500 cycles as well as the capacity retention close to 100%. The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique combined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy proved that the WDHCs anode has fast charge transport kinetics, thus exhibiting excellent rate performance.

Galvanic Replacement Synthesis of Highly Uniform Sb Nanotubes: Reaction Mechanism and Enhanced Sodium Storage Performance

Yan Liu,Bin Zhou,Sheng Liu,Qingshan Ma,Wen-Hua Zhang

One-dimensional nanotubes are very useful for achieving excellent performance in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to the fact that tubular structures can effectively alleviate the structural strain and shorten the ion diffusion length during repeated cycling. In this work, we report a Cu2Sb-mediated growth strategy to controllably fabricate highly uniform Sb nanotubes (NTs), as well as Cu@Cu2Sb and Cu2Sb@Sb composite NTs, via a facile galvanic replacement reaction using Cu nanowires (NWs) as sacrificial templates. Benefiting from their structural merits, the Sb NTs manifest excellent sodium storage performance with superior rate performance (286 mAh g–1 at 10 A g–1) and extraordinary cycling stability (342 mAh g–1 after 6000 cycles at 1 A g–1). Furthermore, a full cell with Sb NTs as anode and Na3(VOPO4)2F as cathode exhibits a high energy density (252 Wh kg–1) and high output voltage (2.7 V), revealing their significant application promise in the next-generation SIBs.

In-situ interface engineering of NVOPF nanosheets with cross-linked conductive networks for superior sodium storage

Xiaojun Luo,Qinxia Liu,Lei Lei,Wei Xia,Ya-Meng Yin,Xue-Qian Wu,Cai-Hong Yang,Ruan Chi,Dong-Sheng Li

Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F (NVPOF) as a prospective candidate for sodium-ion battery cathodes, faces practical challenges for its inherently low electronic conductivity, which impedes fast reaction kinetics and diminishes its sodium storage efficiency. To address these limitations, we introduce an in-situ interface engineering strategy for NVOPF by integrating 1D hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the surface of NVOPF nanosheets. The CNTs are arranged in-situ in multiple directions and significantly enhance adhesion to the NVOPF nanosheets via [PO 4 ] 3‒ ‒CNTs linkages, establishing a robust and conductive interface. This strategy effectively mitigates the aggregation of NVOPF nanosheets, ensuring optimized electronic contact and a persistent, efficient charge-transfer network within the composite. The resultant NVOPF-15%CNTs composite exhibits enhanced rate performance (88.01 mAh g ‒1 at 50 C) and excellent cyclability (retaining 82.4% capacity after 10000 cycles at 50 C). Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses confirm that the designed conductive interface accelerates charge-transfer kinetics and preserves structural integrity. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing NVOPF cathode and suggests a versatile approach applicable to improving other cathode materials.

Enhanced Interfacial Kinetics of Carbon Monolith Boosting Ultrafast Na-Storage

Lei Liu,Yu Chen,Yihao Xie,Peng Tao,Zijing Wang,Qingyi Li,Kexin Wang,Chenglin Yan

Slow ion kinetics of negative electrode materials is the main factor of limiting fast charge and discharge of batteries. Sluggish Na + kinetics property leads to large electrode polarization, resulting in poor rate and cyclic performances. Herein, an electrode of ultrasmall tin nanoparticles decorated in N, S codoped carbon monolith (TCM) with exceptional high-rate capability and ultrastable cycling behavior for Na-storage is reported. The resulted TCM electrode exhibits an extremely high retention of 96% initial charge capacity after 500 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g −1 . Significantly, when the current density is elevated to an ultrahigh rate of 5000 mA g −1 , a high reversible capacity of 228 mAh g −1 after the 2000th cycle is still maintained. More importantly, the stable and fast Na-storage of TCM is investigated and understood by experimental characterizations and kinetics calculations, including interfacial ion/electron transport behavior, ion diffusion, and quantitative pseudocapacitive analysis. These investigations elucidate that the TCM shows improved ion/electron conductivity and enhanced interfacial kinetics. An entirely new perspective to deep insights into the fast ion/electron transport mechanisms revealed by interfacial kinetics of sodiation/desodiation, which contributes to the profound understanding for developing fast charging/discharging and long-term stable electrodes in sodium-ion batteries, is provided.

Sulfur vacancies and morphology dependent sodium storage properties of MoS2-x and its sodiation/desodiation mechanism

Alan Meng,Tianqi Huang,Huanyu Li,He Cheng,Yusheng Lin,Jian Zhao,Zhenjiang Li

Creating rich vacancies and designing distinct micro-morphology are considered as effective strategies for boosting the electrochemical performances of sodium ion battery (SIB) electrode materials . In this paper, a variety of MoS 2 nanostructures with different sulfur vacancies concentration and morphologies are successfully constructed by a hydrothermal method combined with various-temperature calcination treatment in a Ar/H 2 mixed atmosphere. Employed as a free-standing anode for SIBs, the flower-like MoS 2-x microspheres assembled by the intertwined nanosheet arrays (MoS 2-x -800) delivers highest specific capacity of 525.3 mAh g −1 and rate capability, as well as extraordinarily stable cycle life with almost no loss of capacity after 420 cycles. The favorable sodium storage properties are mainly ascribed to the cooperated effects of superior intrinsic conductivity and richer active sites generated by sulfur vacancies , and numerous interspace achieved by the intersection of neighbouring nanosheets. Meanwhile, through ex situ analyses, the reversible charge/discharge mechanism of the obtained MoS 2-x -800 is revealed reasonably. This work not only brings new insights into the design of high-performance electrode materials for SIBs, but also makes a great step forward in the practical applications of transition metal sulfides in energy storage systems.

Enhanced rate capability and cycle stability of Ti2C MXene for sodium storage through an aniline molecules welding strategy

Chen Hao,Wang Ya-Qin,Zhang Dong-Ting,Zhao Bei,Li Min-Peng,Li Chen-Yang,Xu Tian-Peng,Liu Mao-Cheng

MXenes obtained significant attention in the field of energy storage devices due to their characteristic layered structure, modifiable surface functional groups, large electrochemically active surface, and regulable interlayer spacing. Nonetheless, the self-restacking and sluggish ions diffusion kinetics performance of MXenes during the alkali metal ions insertion/extraction process severely impedes their cycle stability and rate capability. This paper proposes an aniline molecule welding strategy for welding p-phenylenediamine (PPDA) into the interlayers of Ti 2 C through a dehydration condensation reaction. The welded PPDA molecules can contribute pillar effect to the layered structure of Ti 2 C. The pillar effect effectively maintains the structural stability during the sodium ions insertion/extraction process and effectively expands the interlayer spacing of Ti 2 C from 1.16 to 1.38 nm, thereby enhancing ions diffusion kinetics performance and improving the long-term cycle stability. The Ti 2 C-PPDA demonstrates outstanding Na + storage capability, exhibiting a specific capacity of 100.2 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A·g −1 over 960 cycles and delivering a remarkable rate capability 81.2 mAh·g −1 at a current density of 5 A·g −1 . The study demonstrates that expanding interlayer spacing is a promising strategy to enhance the Na + storage capacity and improve long-term cycling stability, which provides significant guidance for the design of two-dimensional Na + storage materials with high-rate capability and cycle stability.
