Hyperkalemia is a common metabolic problem in patients with chronic kidney disease. Although oral medications and hemodialysis are clinically applied for lowering serum potassium , the intrinsic limitations encourage alternative therapy in the trend of adsorbent-based miniaturized blood purification devices. Cells serve as the biological K + storage units that accumulate K + through multiple mechanisms. Inspired by cells, our strategy aims at favorable permeation and enrichment of K + in the microsphere . We incorporate cation-affinitive groups into core-shell structures with submicron-sized phase separation. These nano-spaced side-groups cooperate to form interlinked clusters, where crown ethers with Angstrom-scale ring for size-matched complexation, while ionic sulfonic acid groups for hydrophilicity and charge-buffering. The unique structure with such non-covalent interactions facilitates K + for permeation across the shell and binding to the core while also ensuring mechanical strength and anti-swelling durability in biofluids. The microspheres exhibit high selectivity ratios of K + ( S K/Na , S K/Ca , S K/Mg up to 9.8, 21.6, and 17.7). As column adsorbents for hemoperfusion simulation, they effectively lower elevated K + levels to the normal range (clearance rates up to 44.4%/45.3% for hyperkalemic human serum/blood). Blood compatibility tests show low protein adsorption , preferable hemocyte compatibility, and anticoagulation property in vitro. This promising strategy has clinical potential for hyperkalemia in high-risk patients. Statement of significance Hyperkalemia (serum potassium >5 mmol/L) is a common complication in chronic renal failure patients. The limitations of existing treatments prompt a shift to wearable artificial kidney technology for clinical convenience and efficacy. Existing treatments have limitations, and we turn to adsorbent-based miniaturized blood purification devices in the prospect of wearable artificial kidney technology. There exists a lack of ion-specific adsorbents applied in extracorporeal circuits to redress electrolyte imbalances like hyperkalemia. Inspired by cells, we aim at the favorable permeation and enrichment of K + by microspheres. The microspheres have a microphase-isolated core-shell structure, whose nano-spaced groups form cation-affinitive clusters. Selective K + removal and blood compatibility are achieved. We expect this strategy to enlighten alternative hyperkalemia therapy for these high-risk patients.

Potassium (K) is regarded as an alternative to lithium (Li) for use in contemporary energy storage devices owing to its high abundance and low electrochemical potential. However, because K ions are larger than Li ions, they exhibit different solvation properties that can ultimately affect device performance. Herein, a multidentate ether-based electrolyte is demonstrated to effectively solvate K ions and the solvation structures can be further modulated with cosolvents. The use of the multidentate ether-based electrolyte also suppresses the formation of K dendrites and significantly enhances the cycling stability of K//K symmetric cells (e.g., over 2000 h at 0.25 mA cm–2).

Using high-capacity alloy anodes can grandly advance potassium-ion batteries. However, one common issue plaguing these anodes is the loss of active K + ions associated with persistent side reactions on unstable electrode-electrolyte interfaces, resulting in low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and shortened cycling life. Herein, we first explore the potential of a solution-based potassiation reagent (potassium-biphenyl in dimethoxyethane, K-Bp/DME) for chemical prepotassiation. With a low redox potential of 0.45 V vs . K + /K, the K-Bp/DME solution can readily pre-storing K + ions into various alloy-type anodes by a simple immersion operation in a few minutes. Taking nanostructured Bi/P/CNT composite as an example, we demonstrate that the K-Bp/DME prepotassiation simultaneously enables the notable ICE improvement (from 51.9% to 96.2%) and long-life cycling (running 700 cycles at 1.5 A g −1 with a tiny capacity attenuation rate of 0.031% per cycle) by forming a KF-rich SEI film. Furthermore, the full cell assembled by coupling the prepotassiated Bi/P/CNT anode with a potassium Prussian blue cathode delivers a desirable ICE of 88.6% and superior capacity retention of 75.3% after 450 cycles at 0.3 A g −1 . Besides, this prepotassiation method is also successfully extended to other anodes (Sb and Sn), indicating its general applicability.

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) as a substitute for lithium ion batteries have attracted tremendous attention in recent years thanks to the cost-effectiveness and abundance of potassium resources. However, the current lack of suitable electrode materials is a major obstacle against the practical application of KIBs. Hence, design and preparation of capable anode materials are critical for the development of KIBs. In this study, a promising electrode based on N, P-codoped large diameter hollow carbon nanotubes decorated with ultrasmall MoP nanoparticles (MoP@NP-HCNTs) were prepared. The hollow carbon nanotubes facilitate the rapid electron and ion transfer, and release the huge volume expansion during discharge/charge. The MoP@NP-HCNT electrode delivers high initial capacity of 485, 482 and 463 mAh g −1 corresponding to 100, 200 and 1000 mA g −1 , respectively. The discharge specific capacity still maintains 300 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after over 80 cycles. It still shows ultralong cycling stability with a discharge capacity of 255 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 after 120 cycles. This study opens up a new routine to develop high reversible capacity and promising electrode materials for KIBs.

Molybdenum oxides as anode materials have received considerable attention because of their high-theoretical capacities. However, the abrupt volume changes during the charge/discharge process and the poor electrical conductivity lead to rapid capacity decay and poor cycling performance. Molybdenum oxides are anchored on carbon matrix to form composite that can effectively accelerate reaction kinetics and slow down capacity decay. Biomass-based carbon is a promising matrix, due to inexpensive, environment-friendly and abundant. In this study, the thin-flake MoO x was successfully anchored on the N-doped pinecone-derived carbon (NPC) by using a single-step hydrothermal method . When used as a potassium ion battery anode for the first time, the reversible capacity of optimised MoO x /NPC (210.4 mAh·g −1 ) was higher than that of pure MoO 2 (122.7 mAh·g −1 ) at 100 mA g −1 . Even when cycled at 500 mA g −1 , optimised MoO x /NPC exhibited a high capacity of 147.2 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles. Moreover, the potassium ions storage mechanism was analyzed in detail. This finding demonstrates MoO x /NPC as a potential electrode for the development of high-performance PIBs, and provides a new strategy to reduce environmental pollution caused by treating pinecone and increase its additional value.

Patients with chronic kidney disease are at high risk of hyperkalemia that is associated with various life-threatening complications. Treatments primarily rely on orally administered potassium binding agents, along with low curative effects and various side effects. Herein, direct serum potassium uptake was realized via zeolite–heparin-mimicking-polymer hybrid microbeads. The preparation process involved the synthesis of the heparin-mimicking polymer via the in situ cross-linking polymerization of acrylic acid and N -vinylpyrrolidone in polyethersulfone solution, the fabrication of microbeads via zeolite-mixing, electro-spraying and phase-inversion, and the subsequent aqueous-phase modifications based on ion-exchange and metal-leaching. An ultra-high (about 88%) amount of zeolite could be incorporated and well locked inside the polymer matrix. Potassium uptake capability was verified in water, normal saline and human serum, showing high selectivity and fast adsorption. The microbeads exhibited satisfying blood compatibility, negligible hemolysis ratio, prolonged clotting time, inhibited contact activation, and enhanced antifouling property toward serum proteins and cells. The proposed approach toward zeolite–heparin-mimicking-polymer hybrid microbeads provided a cheap, efficient and safe treatment protocol of hyperkalemia for the high-risk patients.

Carbon materials are considered as highly promising anode candidates for potassium-ion batteries due to their abundance, cost-effectiveness and stable structure. In this study, we use a one-step solid-state pyrolysis method for synthesizing high nitrogen and sulfur co-doped hard carbon (HNSC) using pyrene precursor with a high carbon atom ratio. The prepared HNSC possesses self-template pore channels with high sulfur and nitrogen co doping, exposing abundant edge active sites that enhance potassium storage capacity. Therefore, the optimized HNSC anode displays a high reversible capacity of 364.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 , excellent rate capability of 134 mAh g −1 at 5000 mA g −1 and cycling life with specific capacity of 171 mAh g −1 over 700 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 . Additionally, the potassium ion hybrid capacitor constructed using HNSC and activated carbon exhibited stable electrochemical performance, demonstrating its potential for application. The study presents a straightforward and versatile approach for fabricating anode materials of in new secondary batteries.

In this study, the effects of anions on the decolorization reaction by potassium ferrate(VI) were investigated for the first time and a comparative investigation between potassium ferrate(VI) and potassium permanganate was carried out. Anions such as Cl − , SO 4 2 - , and NO 3 - showed favorable effects on color removal, while, CO 3 2 - and PO 4 3 - displayed inhibitory effects. The effects of the oxidant concentration, initial solution pH, dye concentration and temperature on color removal were studied, and the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) were also examined. The decolorizing capacity of ferrate(VI) was better than potassium permanganate. When dye concentration was 100 mg/L, oxidants were both 150 mg/L, 100% color removal was achieved by K 2 FeO 4 treatment while only 62.04% by KMnO 4 . Ferrate(VI) has stably high decolorizing efficiency up to 85% in a wide pH range from 4.0 to 9.0. However, potassium permanganate only had better efficiency under acidic solution (100% color removal at pH 3.0, while only 78.05% at pH 9.0). At the temperature of 60 °C, approximately 80% decolorizing efficiency was achieved by ferrate(VI) while potassium permanganate only 59.37%. Ferrate(VI) acquired 58.33% COD and 24.15% TOC removal while potassium permanganate only 42.86% and 9.94% respectively. The oxidizing order was that color > COD > TOC both for K 2 FeO 4 and KMnO 4 .

The expression of potassium channels can be related to the occurrence and development of tumors. Their change would affect K+ outflow. Thus, in situ monitoring of extracellular K+ shows a great significance. Herein, the dual-functional K+ ion-selective electrode as the scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) tip (K+-ISE SECM tip) has been developed for in situ monitoring of the extracellular K+. Based on multi-wall carbon nanotubes as a transduction layer, the K+-ISE SECM tip realizes both the plotting of approach curves to position the tip for in situ detection and the recording of potential responses. It shows a near Nernstian response, good selectivity, and excellent stability. Based on these characteristics, it was used to in situ monitor K+ concentrations ([K+]o) of three breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and SK-BR-3 cells) at 3 μm above the cell, and [K+]o of MDA-MB-231 cells show the highest value, followed by MCF-7 cells and SK-BR-3 cells. K+ outflow induced by electrical stimulation or pH changes of the culture environment (Δ[K+]o) was further determined, and the possible mechanism of K+ outflow was investigated with 4-aminopyridin (4-AP). MCF-7 cells present the largest value of Δ[K+]o, followed by MDA-MB-231 cells and SK-BR-3 cells at all the stimulation potentials, and pH 6.50 shows the greatest impact on K+ outflow of the three cell lines. The pretreatment of 4-AP changed K+ outflow, probably due to the regulation of voltage-gated channels. These findings provide insight into a deep understanding of the microenvironment influence on K+ outflow, thereby reflecting the possible mechanism of potassium channels.

All-solid-state potassium metal batteries have been considered promising candidates for large-scale energy storage because of abundance and wide availability of K resources, elimination of flammable liquid organic electrolytes, and incorporation of high-capacity K metal anode. However, unideal K-ion conductivities of most reported K-ion solid electrolytes have restricted the development of these batteries. Herein, a novel K2B10H10·CO(NH2)2 complex is reported, forming by incorporating urea into K2B10H10, to achieve an enhanced K-ion conductivity. The crystal structure of K2B10H10·CO(NH2)2 was determined as a monoclinic lattice with the space group of C2/c (No. 15). K2B10H10·CO(NH2)2 delivers an ionic conductivity of 2.7 × 10–8 S cm–1 at 25 °C, and reaching 1.3 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 80 °C, which is about 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of K2B10H10. One possible reason is the anion expansion in size due to the presence of dihydrogen bonds in K2B10H10·CO(NH2)2, resulting in an increase in the K–H bond distance and the electrostatic potential, thereby enhancing the mobility of K+. The K-ion conductivity is also higher than those of most hydridoborate-based K-ion conductors reported. Besides, K2B10H10·CO(NH2)2 reveals a wide electrochemical stability window and remarkable interface compatibility with K metal electrodes, suggesting a promising electrolyte for all-solid-state K metal batteries.

Potassium ions (K + ) are essential electrolytes in the human body, crucial for maintaining cell membrane potential, neuromuscular excitability, and cardiac function, with blood potassium (BP) levels needing to stay within 3.5–5.5 mmol/L to prevent serious health issues. Current BP detection methods rely on lab testing, which is costly, slow, and unsuitable for remote areas. This study developed a handheld micro-volume BP detection device using paper-based ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). The device, built on a PET substrate with screen printing and a custom ion-sensitive membrane, features a miniaturized sensor that requires only 2 µL of fingerstick blood for rapid BP measurement, reducing costs significantly. A handheld reader with built-in electrochemical signal processing and wireless transmission allows instant results display and data upload to smartphones. The device demonstrated excellent linearity, repeatability, and stability, indicating its potential for acute care, chronic disease management, and sports medicine.

The highly reversible insertion/extraction of large-radius K + into electrode materials remains a tough goal, especially for conversion-type materials. Herein, we design a current collector-integrated electrode (N–CoSe/CoSe 2 –C@Cu) as an advanced anode for potassium-ion battery (PIBs). The conductive CoSe/CoSe 2 heterojunction with rich Se vacancy defects, conductive sp 2 N-doped carbon layer, and the elastic copper foil matrix can greatly accelerate the electron transfer and enhance the structural stability. Consequently, the well-designed N–CoSe/CoSe 2 –C@Cu current collector-integrated electrode displays enhanced potassium storage performance with regard to a high capacity (325.1 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 after 200 cycles), an exceptional rate capability (223.5 mAh·g −1 at 2000 mA·g −1 ), and an extraordinary long-term cycle stability (a capacity fading of only 0.019% per cycle over 1200 cycles at 2000 mA·g −1 ). Impressively, ex situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterizations prove that the elastic structure of copper foil is merged into the cleverly designed N–CoSe/CoSe 2 –C@Cu heterostructure, which buffers the deformation of structure and volume and greatly promotes the cycle life during the potassium/depotassium process.
