Coupling of CdS and g-C3N4 decorated dendritic fibrous nano-silica for efficient photocatalytic reduction of uranium (VI)

Fang Wang,Yun Liao,Tingting Li,Liangshu Xia

Uranium (VI) removal and recovery from wastewater is crucial for sustainable development of nuclear energy and environmental remediation. Among various techniques, the photocatalytic reducing uranium (VI) to immobile uranium (IV) has been regarded as one of the most effective strategies. As a result, the design and fabrication of photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention. In this study, g-C 3 N 4 decorated dendritic fibrous nano-silica was fabricated first and then coupled with CdS. The fibrous photocatalyst showed high surface area and extended visible light absorption. More importantly, it exhibited a satisfying performance for the photocatalytic reduction of uranium (VI) under air atmosphere with solar irradiation. The SEM images and XPS spectrum confirmed that uranium (VI) was indeed photo-reduced to uranium (IV). Meanwhile, quenching experiments showed that O 2− played a key role in uranium (VI) reduction.

Research on the uranium (VI) reduction by free radicals using UV/formic acid process

Zhou Dan,Guo Yadan,Wang Juan,Xuan Keng,Guo Yaoping,Jiang Hao,Wang Xuegang,Zhou Zhongkui

This study investigated the use of ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation for the activation of formic acid (FA) to reduce U(VI) in aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated that under UV radiation, FA exhibited a higher U(VI) reduction efficiency than other organic acids, and up to 70% of U(VI) in aqueous solutions was successfully removed. Electron spin resonance and methanol quenching experiments confirmed that U(VI) reduction in the UV/FA process was due to the electron transfer facilitated by FA (HCOOH) and CO 2 •− . This catalyst-free UV/FA process holds promise for the reduction of U(VI) in leaking water from uranium tailing ponds.

Highly efficient uranium(VI) removal from aqueous solution using poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl-ether) crosslinked microspheres

Ma Zhili,Wang Yanfei,Liu Mouwu,Luo YiGe,Xie Xiaoqing,Xiong Zeng

Poly(cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether) crosslinked microspheres with active amino groups on the surface were prepared by one-step precipitation polymerization method. The as-prepared material were characterized by means of FTIR, XPS, XRD, EDS and SEM. The effects of pH, time of contact, dosage, initial concentration and temperature on the adsorption of uranium(VI) by the crosslinked microspheres were studied, and the adsorption mechanism was elucidated. Under the optimized adsorption conditions, the adsorption removal efficiency reached 97.03%. The experimental results fit the Langmuir isotherm model and adsorption processes comply with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic data revealed that the adsorption behavior of uranium(VI) on the microspheres was spontaneous and exothermic.

Removal and recovery of uranium(VI) from aqueous solution by adsorption of surface aldehyde assembled polystyrene microspheres

Jingbo Ni,Ruyi Liu,Changhao Yan

The surface aldehyde assembled polystyrene microspheres (PS-CHO) were synthesized via the copolymerization of styrene and acrolein and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Some characteristic parameters, such as specific surface area, pore diameter distribution and zeta potential, were also determined. The content of aldehyde groups in the PS-CHO microspheres was inferred through potentiometric titration. Adsorption of uranium(VI) from an aqueous solution was investigated in a series of variable experiments. Effect of pH value, ionic strength, adsorbent dose, contact time and temperature on uranium(VI) adsorption were also discussed. Results showed that the optimum condition was the temperature of 313 K, 0.4 g L –1 of adsorbent dosage, pH value of 6.0 for 20 mg L –1 of uranium(VI) concentration. The maximum removal efficiency of uranium(VI) ions was 92.13%. Kinetic studies certified the pseudo-second-order was the best-suited model and the fitting linear plot of the intraparticle diffusion model did not pass the origin, indicating that chemical sorption was the rate-determining step of the adsorption mechanism rather than mass transfer. Also, the Elovich equation was consistent with the experimental data, meaning chemical interactions between microspheres and adsorbates. The adsorption capacity at the equilibrium of PS-CHO microspheres was estimated to be 46.07 mg g –1 at 313 K. Furthermore, about 96% of adsorbed uranium(VI) could be recovered by laconic perchloric acid treatment, suggesting the stability and reusability of PS-CHO microspheres.

Visible light driven Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 for adsorption-photocatalysis of aqueous U(VI)

Jingjing Wang,Yun Wang,Wei Wang,Tong Peng,Jianjun Liang,Ping Li,Duoqiang Pan,Qiaohui Fan,Wangsuo Wu

The photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) is recognized as an economical and effective way for U(VI) removal/recovery from solutions. To improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 under visible light, TiO 2 was hydrogenated by NaBH 4 to generate Ti 3+ self-doped black TiO 2 (BT n ). The self-doped Ti 3+ alongside oxygen vacancies (Ov) could act as interband level to increase visible light capture and reduce the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The obtained BT n samples showed high performance for U(VI) elimination under near neutral conditions, and held an outstanding anti-interference for U(VI) over competing metal cations and anions. Methanol and ethanol could act as sacrificial donors, being favorable for the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI), while the presence of EDTA inhibited the photoreduction of U(VI). The BT n photocatalysts showed relatively high stability and reusability during the photocatalysis and elution processes. The XPS, TEM and XRD results revealed that U(VI) was photo-reduced to form UO 2 on the surface of BT n . This work may serve as an important reference for improving the photocatalytic reactivity of TiO 2 as well as for the efficient removal/recovery of U(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Organic acid mediated photoelectrochemical reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) in waste water: electrochemical parameters and spectroscopy

Pingping Wang,Faqin Dong,Dengliang He,Shuxin Liu,Ning Chen,Tingting Huo

The photoelectrochemical reduction of U(VI) is recognized as an economical and effective way to eliminate radioactive pollution. In this study, we construct a α-Fe2O3/TiO2 film electrode-based photoelectrochemical cell to remove U(VI) and recover uranium from aqueous solution. Citric acid and oxalic acid could act as hole scavengers, being favorable for the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI). In the presence of 0.5 mM citric acid and oxalic acid, the uranium removal capacity reached 70% and 58%, respectively, while 24% was achieved for the system in the absence of acid. The XRD, SEM, FT-IR and XPS results revealed that a proportion of U(IV) was also precipitated as surface associated metastudtite. These novel observations have significant implications for the behavior of uranium within engineered and natural environments.

High Efficiency Uranium(VI) Removal from Wastewater by Strong Alkaline Ion Exchange Fiber: Effect and Characteristic

Shiping Zhou,Faqin Dong,Yilin Qin

In this study, we analyzed the removal efficiency of uranium(U(VI)) in wastewater at relatively low concentrations using strong alkaline ion exchange fiber (SAIEF). Static tests showed that the strong alkali fibers can purify U(VI) containing wastewater in a concentration range of 20–100 mg L−1with an optimal pH of 10.5 and contact time of 15–30 min. Adsorption and desorption cycling tests indicated that, adsorbed uranium is easily desorbed by 0.1 mol L−1HCl, and the fiber still maintained the original adsorption efficiency after eight cycles. According to dynamic penetration test results, the SAIEF saturation adsorption capacity was 423.9 mg g−1, and the effluent concentration of uranium through two series columns was less than 0.05 mg L−1, reaching the national standard for non-receiving water (GB23727-2009) SEM-EDS and FTIR analysis revealed that the functional group of SAIEF is CH2N+(CH3)3Cl−. Addotionally, the major forms of fiber exchange adsorption are (UO2)2CO3(OH)3−, UO2(CO)34−and UO2(OH)3−. The results indicate that the SAIEF is an excellent material for uranium removal. Keywords:strong alkaline ion exchange fiber;uranium(VI);deep purification

The enhanced photocatalytic reduction of uranium(VI) by ZnS@g-C3N4 heterojunctions under sunlight

Wu Fan,Zhang Zhibin,Cheng Zhongping,Zhou Runze,Lin Yuling,Liu Yuhui,Wang Youqun,Cao Xiaohong,Liu Mingguang,Liu Yunhai

The photocatalytic reduction of soluble \({\text{UO}}_{2}^{2 + }\) from radioactive wastewater is becoming an effective method to reduce radioactive pollution, while available catalysts are considerable limitation. Herein, the ZnS@g-C 3 N 4 (ZSGCN) heterojunctions complexes were compounded as catalysts to reduce \({\text{UO}}_{2}^{2 + }\) . The results from TEM, XRD, XPS, EIS, DRS and PL showed that the ZnS nanoparticles combined with graphite carbon nitride (GCN), which is the construction of heterojunctions broadened the absorption range of sunlight. The ZSGCN-5 presented the optimal photocatalytic reduction activity to \({\text{UO}}_{2}^{2 + }\) , which was 4.34 times than that of pristine GCN. The ZSGCN-5 heterojunction becomes a promising photocatalyst for radioactive environment remediation.

Designed Core–Shell Fe3O4@Polydopamine for Effectively Removing Uranium(VI) from Aqueous Solution

Feng Jinghua,Cai Yawen,Wang Xiangxue,Wang Xin,Zhu Mingyu,Fang Ming,Liu Zehua,Tan Xiaoli

Adsorbents with the combination of magnetic separation and removal performance are expected for reducing the adverse impact of nuclear pollution. In this study, the core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @polydopamine (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA) was successfully synthesized and used for removal of uranium (U(VI)) ion from aqueous solution. The abundant N-containing groups derived from PDA exist as the chelate sites for U(VI) and contribute greatly for U(VI) removal. Experimental results show that Fe 3 O 4 @PDA (56.39 mg g –1 ) exhibits greater sorption capacity for U(VI) removal compared with the pure Fe 3 O 4 (9.17 mg g –1 ). The sorption isotherm can be well fitted with Freundlich model and the sorption process is endothermic and spontaneous. The removal of U(VI) can be explained by the complexation of U(VI) with –NH–, –NH 2 and C–O in the surface of Fe 3 O 4 @PDA by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis.

Enhanced removal of U(VI) by SnS2/NiCr-LDH under humic acid: synergistic effect and removal mechanism

Lu Sen,Yin Yuqiang,Bao Jiacheng,Wang Hongqiang,Lei Zhiwu,Hu Eming,Xin Qi,Quan Yihao,Wang Qingliang

In this study, tin sulphide (SnS 2 ) and nickel–chromium hydrotalcite (NiCr-LDH) complexes (SnS 2 /NiCr-LDH) were used for the simultaneous removal of U(VI) and humic acid (HA) from U(VI)-containing wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption of HA by the SnS 2 /NiCr-LDH was greatly enhanced, which was 4.07 and 2.94 times higher than that of pure SnS 2 and NiCr-LDH, respectively, and the highest U(VI) adsorption quantity over SnS 2 /NiCr-LDH increased from 127.81 to 446.68 mg g −1 when HA was present. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the enhanced U(VI) adsorption on SnS 2 /NiCr-LDH was facilitated by the formation of a robust inner-sphere surface complex between U(VI) and HA.

Constructing coconut shell biochar/MXenes composites through self-assembly strategy to enhance U(VI) and Cs(I) immobilization capability

Liu Fenglei,Wang Shanshan,Zhao Chaofeng,Hu Baowei

Herein, a biochar-based composite (Ti 3 C 2 T x @biochar-PDA/PEI) was constructed by decorating Ti 3 C 2 T x and polydopamine on coconut shell biochar via electrostatic self-assembly method. Different characterization techniques were applied to explore the structure, morphology and composition of the sorbents. It was found that the higher porosity and diverse functional groups were conducive for Ti 3 C 2 T x @biochar-PDA/PEI to capture radionuclides, and the water environmental conditions made a great contribution to the adsorption process. The process of removing U(VI)/Cs(I) well complied with the Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order equations, which indicated that the single layer chemical adsorption occurred on the solid liquid interface. Meanwhile, this produced composite exhibited superior removal performance under complex co-existing ion environment, and the maximum adsorption amounts of U(VI) and Cs(I) reached up to 239.7 and 40.3 mg g −1 . Impressively, this adsorbent still exhibited good adsorption performance after three cycles of regeneration. The spectral analysis and DFT calculation demonstrated that adsorption of U(VI) might be a chemical process, while the adsorption of Cs(I) should be ion exchange or electrostatic attraction. This study demonstrated the potential application of Ti 3 C 2 T x @biochar-PDA/PEI as an effective remediation strategy for radioactive wastewater cleanup. Graphical Abstract

A Schiff base/quaternary ammonium salt bifunctional graphene oxide as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Th(IV)/U(VI)

Ning Pan,Long Li,Jie Ding,Ruibing Wang,Yongdong Jin,Chuanqin Xia

A novel approach for facile covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) was proposed in the present study in order to effectively avoid necessary anhydrous conditions and the usage of harsh reagents during the chemical functionalization of GO. Herein, a GO derivative that was functionalized with a primary amine derivative bearing a positively charged quaternary ammonium group, GO-S, was synthesized through a Schiff base condensation reaction between the amine groups of the primary amine derivative and the aldehyde groups of GO. The introduction of the quaternary ammonium groups can prevent GO from stacking and improve the dispersibility of GO after modification. The formation of imine bonds ( N CH ) between the primary amine and GO has been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The GO-S demonstrated good dispersion stability in aqueous medium and also exhibited better adsorption performance than GO for Th(IV) and U(VI), with a maximum thorium adsorption capacity of 2.22   mmol/g and a maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 0.83   mmol/g, suggesting a great potential for the application of graphene oxide-based materials for facilitating the removal of Th(IV) and U(VI) from nuclear waste solutions.
