Recently, nanomaterials with natural enzymatic activity and photothermal effect offer an alternative pathway to combat bacterial infections and the abuse of antibiotics. Unfortunately, the development of these reported antibacterial nanoagents is always hampered by insufficient enzymatic activity and low photothermal conversion efficiency. To address these issues, herein, novel ultra-small osmium clusters-loaded F127-organosilica micelles (Os@FOMs) are developed as antibacterial nanoagents for efficient infected-wound healing. The preparation of nanoagents mainly involves the confined sol-gel transition of thiol-containing silane coupling agent in the hydrophobic region of F127 micelles and subsequent self-reduction process of osmium salt in the thiols/disulfides-doped organosilica framework. As a promising candidate for bacterial-infected wound healing, Os@FOMs exhibit not only high photothermal conversion efficiency of 70% under 808 nm near infrared (NIR) irradiation, but also display peroxidase (POD)-like activity in acidic conditions, which together contribute excellent antibacterial ability in acidic bacterial infectious microenvironment. On the other hand, Os@FOMs possess good catalase-like effect in neutral or weak alkaline conditions, thus protecting normal tissues from the POD-like protocol with exogenous H 2 O 2 damage for efficient wound healing. It is highly expected that the new noble metal@organosilica-based nanoagents present a promising paradigm to fight antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Osmium(II) complexes usually exhibit an excellent NIR (near-infrared) emission, which conforms to the optical window in a biological system. Here we designed three mitochondria-targeted NIR terpyridine Os(II) complexes as photosensitizers, which demonstrated great NIR phosphorescence emission and long phosphorescence lifetime. The emission spectra of the osmium(II) complexes were red-shifted with increasing conjugated planes of their terpyridine ligand (Os3 > Os2 > Os1). Furthermore, the Os(II) complexes, especially Os3, could produce singlet oxygen and oxidize NADH under both 465 nm and 633 nm LED light irradiation. It was found that Os3 has certain phototoxicities upon red light irradiation, and have great potential for NIR photodynamic therapy.

Platinum group metals-based nanomaterials have shown promise as enzyme mimics, and attracted much attention in the fields of chemical catalysis, biosensor, therapy and pollutants degradation. Surprisingly, only a few works exist on the exploration of osmium-based nanozymes, and the catalytic activities and applicable potentials thereof have not been comprehensively understood. Herein, we prepared a kind of citrate-functionalized osmium nanoparticles (Os-citrate NPs) by one-pot synthesis strategy. The obtained Os-citrate NPs can boost hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH), enabling it to serve as a peroxidase mimic. Steady-state kinetics revealed that Os-citrate NPs is rather potent and peroxidase-like specific nanozyme. Doping a certain amount of osmium oxides (OsO 2 ) in the surface of Os-citrate NPs can greatly improve the production of •OH from H 2 O 2 , enhancing the peroxidase-like specific activity. We applied this Os-citrate catalyst in advanced oxidative degradation of phenolic pollutants. In a wide pH range of 2.0–10, 4-nitrophenol could be fast degraded by the combination of H 2 O 2 with Os-citrate NPs. As a proof-of-concept, the Os-citrate nanozyme was successfully employed in highly efficient degradation of phenolic pollutants. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the application of Os-based peroxidase-like nanozymes in highly efficient degradation of organic pollutants.

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production, yet still challenging. Here, we report boron-modulated osmium (B-Os) aerogels with rich defects and ultra-fine diameter as a pH-universal HER electrocatalyst. The catalyst shows the small overpotentials of 12, 19, and 33 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes, respectively, as well as excellent stability, surpassing commercial Pt/C. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that interventional interstitial B atoms can optimize the electron structure of B-Os aerogels and stabilize Os as active sites in an electron-deficient state under realistic working conditions, and simultaneously reveals the HER catalytic mechanisms of B-Os aerogels in pH-universal electrolytes. The density functional theory calculations also indicate introducing B atoms can tailor the electronic structure of Os, resulting in the reduced water dissociation energy and the improved adsorption/desorption behavior of hydrogen, which synergistically accelerate HER.

Diabetic wounds are susceptible to bacterial infections, largely linked to high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). To treat such wounds, enzymes like glucose oxidase (GOx) can be combined with nanozymes (nanomaterials mimic enzymes) to use glucose effectively for purposes. However, there is still room for improvement in these systems, particularly in terms of process simplification, enzyme activity regulation, and treatment effects. Herein, the approach utilizes GOx to directly facilitate the biomineralized growth of osmium (Os) nanozyme (GOx-OsNCs), leading to dual-active centers and remarkable triple enzyme activities. Initially, GOx-OsNCs use vicinal dual-active centers, enabling a self-cascaded mechanism that significantly enhances glucose sensing performance compared to step-by-step reactions, surpassing the capabilities of other metal sources such as gold and platinum. In addition, GOx-OsNCs are integrated into a glucose-sensing gel, enabling instantaneous visual feedback. In the treatment of infected diabetic wounds, GOx-OsNCs exhibit multifaceted benefits by lowering blood glucose levels and exhibiting antibacterial properties through the generation of hydroxyl free radicals, thereby expediting healing by fostering a favorable microenvironment. Furthermore, the catalase-like activity of GOx-OsNCs aids in reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and hypoxia, culminating in improved healing outcomes. Overall, this synergistic enzyme-nanozyme blend is user-friendly and holds considerable promise for diverse applications.
