It is desirable to prepare low-cost non-noble metal catalysts using a simple and efficient method. Herein, we display for the first time that nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon-supported vanadium nitride (VN/NC/C-x) catalysts can be regulated by dicyandiamide (DCDA). The introduction of DCDA not only effectively controls the pore structure, but also plays an important role in adjusting oxygen vacancies and d-electrons. In addition, DCDA is not only a significant raw material for the N-doped carbon, but also a nitrogen source for the preparation of vanadium nitride. The VN/NC/C-3 catalyst was prepared after optimization of the preparation parameters, and the macro/micro structure demonstrates a superior ORR performance in alkaline media with a positive onset potential of 0.85 V and a half-wave potential of 0.75 V, the limiting current density is as high as 4.52 mA·cm−2, and the Tafel slope is only 75.54 mV·dec−1. The VN/NC/C-3-based Zn–air battery exhibits a highest peak power density (161.82 mW∙cm−2) and an excellent energy density (702.28 mAh·kgZn−1and 861.51 Wh·kgZn−1). This work provides a valuable synthetic approach for the preparation of other transition metal nitride catalysts with a relative economic value and high performance.Keywords:VN/NC/C;N-doped carbon;oxygen vacancies;oxygen reduction reaction;Zn–air battery

Rechargeable non-alkaline zinc-air batteries (ZABs) address the CO₂ incompatibility and instability issues of conventional alkaline batteries. However, the impact of solid discharge products like zinc oxide on discharge capacity at the air cathode remains unexplored. In this study, we investigate how anions influence ion pair solvation structures using Zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTF)₂)-N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and Zinc acetate (Zn(Ac)₂)-DMF electrolytes, and how these structures affect the distribution of discharge product. Our finding shows that anions with lower donor numbers (DNs), like the weaker ligand OTF - (20.5), enhance the zinc ion activity and promote rapid Zn 2 ⁺ reactions with oxygen during discharge, leading to a more than tenfold increase in discharge capacity. In contrast, acetate anions with higher DNs (43.3) form stable complexes, inhibiting zinc ion activity and causing the formation of film-like discharge products, which reduces ZAB performance. The Zn(OTF)₂-DMF electrolyte also enables a battery lifespan of over 200 h, more than fivefold compared to the acetate-based system.

Renewable biomass serves as a cost-effective source of carbon matrix to carry single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, the natural abundant oxygen in these materials hinders the sufficient dispersion of element with high oxygen affinity such iron (Fe). The lowered-density and oxidized SACs greatly limits their catalytic applications. Here we develop a facile continuous activation (CA) approach for synthesizing robust biomass-derived Fe-SACs. Comparing to the traditional pyrolysis method, the CA approach significantly increases the Fe loading density from 1.13 atoms nm −2 to 4.70 atoms nm −2 . Simultaneously, the CA approach induces a distinct coordination tuning from dominated Fe-O to Fe-N moieties. We observe a pH-universal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance over the CA-derived Fe-SACs with a half-wave potential of 0.93 V and 0.78 V vs. RHE in alkaline and acidic electrolyte, respectively. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the increased Fe-N coordination effectively reduces the energy barriers for the ORR, thus enhancing the catalytic activity. The Fe-SACs-based zinc-air batteries show a specific capacity of 792 mA·h·g Zn −1 and ultra-long life span of over 650 h at 5 mA cm −2 .

The fabrication of ordered noble metal alloys on carbon supports can effectively alter the electronic structure of the catalyst interface and the valence states of the elements, presenting a viable alternative to platinum (Pt) for the electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal–air battery cathodes. Herein, we developed a straightforward in situ reduction synthesis method that facilitates the formation of ordered PdZn alloy catalysts on hollow carbon under specific conditions, optimizing ORR efficiency. In an oxygen-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution, the ORR performance of the synthesized Pd 0.02 Zn-NC-900 catalyst exhibits an initial potential of ∼0.996 V and a half-wave potential of ∼0.887 V at 1600 rpm. When integrated into a zinc–air battery, it achieves a remarkable specific power of 213.7 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 813.8 mAh g Zn − 1 , outperforming commercial Pt/C. Our research focuses on the efficient synthesis of carbon-supported ordered PdZn alloys to address the needs of electrochemical energy conversion applications.

Graphical ORR or OER : CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) nanosheets are deposited on nitrogen-doped graphite-carbon polyhedra with FeCo alloy nanoparticles to form a composite bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst. The FeCo/LDH-NGCP catalyst shows wonderful ORR and OER bifunctional electrocatalytic performance, which is superior to that of the precious metal based catalyst. Reasonably screening the targeted oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) constituents and constructing high-efficiency and stabilized ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts are pivotal for the advancement of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Here, CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) nanosheets are deposited on nitrogen-doped graphite-carbon polyhedra with FeCo alloy nanoparticles (FeCo/LDH-NGCP). Due to the synergic effect between FeCo-NGCP, CoFe-LDH and FeCo/LDH-NGCP, the electrocatalyst with the abundant and accessible active sites can provide good charge/mass transfer, and thus shows wonderful ORR and OER bifunctional electrocatalytic performance. In ORR tests, FeCo/LDH-NGCP catalyst displays larger half-wave potential (E 1/2 , 0.89 V vs. 0.85 V), higher limiting current density (J L , 5.91 mA/cm 2 vs. 5.14 mA/cm 2 ) and better stability than commercial Pt/C. As for OER, FeCo/LDH-NGCP possesses a smaller overpotential (η) of 299.6 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and more durable stability than commercial RuO 2 (330.6 mV). Furthermore, in ZAB tests, the cycling stability of ZAB-FeCo/LDH-NGCP (over 470 h) outperforms the ZAB-Pt/C+RuO 2 (92 h) with commercial electrocatalyst (Pt/C+RuO 2 ). Therefore, the FeCo/LDH-NGCP catalyst offers a new perspective to construct ZABs bifunctional catalysts and their commercial application in ZABs.

Electrocatalytic materials with dual functions of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have received increasing attention in the field of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) research. In this study, bifunctional CoNC@NCXS catalysts were prepared by anchoring Co and N co-doped CoNC on N-doped carbon xerogel sphere (NCXS) based on the spatially confined domain effect and in-situ doping technique. CoNC@NCXS exhibited excellent ORR/OER activity in alkaline electrolytes with the ORR onset potential of 0.99 V, the half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.78 V at 10 mA cm −2 and the OER overpotential of 360 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . These excellent catalytic activities were derived from constructing composite active structures and enhancing electrocatalytic efficiency. The ZAB assembled with CoNC@NCXS catalyst had a discharge specific capacity of 710 mAh g −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which was superior to that of the Pt/C&RuO 2 catalyst-assembled battery (667 mAh g −1 ). After running for 150 h, the charge and discharge efficiency of the CoNC@NCXS battery decreased by only 12.8%, which confirmed the excellent stability of the CoNC@NCXS catalyst. The free energy diagrams showed that, CoNC@NCXS has lower energy barriers and higher potential than CoNC in key reaction steps. This study provides a new perspective for the structural design of highly active composite catalysts in energy storage and conversion.

The development of highly active non-precious metal bifunctional oxygen catalysts is of great significance in improving the efficiency of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this work, Co 3 O 4 is modified by a simple sulfur-doping strategy, which achieves a sulfur-doped Co 3 O 4 (S-Co 3 O 4 ) with significantly-enhanced oxygen catalytic activity. The doping of sulfur promotes the exposure of cobalt active sites and brings abundant oxygen vacancies, which provide additional active sites and enhance the conductivity of Co 3 O 4 . Consequently, S-Co 3 O 4 exhibits a low overpotential of 318 mV in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and an improved half-wave potential (0.788 V) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, the sulfur doping increases the ORR kinetic current density of pristine Co 3 O 4 by a factor of 49. The assembled ZABs based on S-Co 3 O 4 cathodes show a higher peak power density (98.90 mW cm −2 ) than the commercial Pt/C + RuO 2 -based ZABs. This work reveals that the intrinsic oxygen catalytic activity of Co 3 O 4 can be significantly strengthened by sulfur doping, which can modify its structural characteristics and introduce structural defects. The development of nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a central task in renewable electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies. Iron-nitrogen doped carbon-based (Fe−N/C) materials are promising alternatives to Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts. Owing to large specific surface area and outstanding electrical conductivity, carbon black is an inborn support for electrocatalysts. Unfortunately, the direct incorporation of Fe−N x moieties onto the surface of carbon black has not been realized to date. Herein, Fe−N x moieties are directly incorporated onto the surface of carbon black through surface modification and the following Fe and N co-doping. The obtained Fe and N co-doped carbon back (Fe−N/CB) catalyst has very large specific surface area and abundant accessible Fe−N x moieties. As a result, Fe−N/CB electrocatalyst exhibits a more positive half-wave potential (0.86 V) than Pt/C. The Fe−N/CB catalyst also displays better stability and methanol resistance than Pt/C. The Zn-air battery with Fe−N/CB as cathodic catalyst shows a maximum power density of 68 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 676 mAh g Zn -1 . Our finding provides a convenient and low-cost approach to fabricating efficient M−N/C-based catalysts and will be helpful to the development of renewable electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies.

Most of the reported hydrogel-based strain sensors need an external power supply to translate mechanical deformations into detectable electrical signals. Herein, we prepare a gelatin-graphene oxide-ferric ion cross-linked poly(acrylic acid) (Gel-GO-PAA-Fe 3+ ) hydrogel for constructing a self-powered strain sensor. The hydrogel exhibit favorable self-healing, stretchable and resilient properties due to the formation of dynamic hydrogen bond and dual coordination bond within the gel matrix. With a constant elongation of 400% and high conductivity of 0.50 S/m, the hydrogel-based sensor can monitor various human movements. Interestingly, the hydrogel electrolyte integrating zinc anode and MnO 2 /graphite air cathode are developed into a flexible zinc-air battery, and then connected to a fixed resistor to achieve the self-powered strain sensor. By transforming the resistance variations caused by applied strain into voltage output signals, the integrated system could monitor human activities in a wide range without external power, demonstrating its huge practical application in wearable electronics for sensing.

Highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction are essential for the development of rechargeable metal–air batteries. Herein, we demonstrate a novel bifunctional electrocatalyst with CeO2 and Co nanoparticles being embedded in N-doped carbon, which is achieved via pyrolyzing CeO2@zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 particles. In 0.1 M KOH aqueous solution, CeO2/Co@N-doped carbon shows an excellent electrocatalytic performance with an oxygen reduction reaction onset potential of 0.998 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode with an oxygen evolution reaction overpotential of 474 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The liquid rechargeable Zn–air battery that is assembled by using CeO2/Co@N-doped carbon as the air cathode shows excellent charge/discharge performance, with an open-circuit potential of 1.42 V and a maximum power density of 102.69 mW cm−2. Furthermore, the rechargeable Zn–air battery exhibits stable cycling performance at a constant current density of 5 mA cm−2 after 70 hours, with a charge/discharge gap of only 0.8 V and round-trip efficiency of ca. 59%. The remarkable bifunctional properties are considered to arise from the synergistic effect between the N-doped carbon and CeO2 nanoparticles, where abundant Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies in CeO2 are generated and more defect sites are available in N-doped carbon.

Zinc-air battery has drawn increasing attention from the whole world owing to its large energy capacity, stable working voltage, environmentally friendship, and low price. A special porous Zn with three-dimensional (3D) network frame structure, whose multistage average pore sizes can be tuned from 300 to 8 um, is synthesized in this work. It is found that there is a competition between Zn2+ and NH4+ for their reduction on the supports. And the decrease of Zn2+ concentration and increase of NH4+ concentration can facilitate the decrease of pore size. Potential-dynamic polarization was tested with 3-electrodes cell, aiming to characterize the electrochemical activity and corrosion properties of porous Zn and commercial Zn foil electrodes. After optimization, the porous Zn prepared with the parameters of 3 M NaBr, 1 M C2H3O2NH4, and 0.01 M C4H6O4Zn shows the most negative corrosion potential of −1.45 V among all the samples, indicating the remarkable anti-corrosion property. Its discharge specific capacity is up to 812 mAh g−1. And discharge-charge test of the porous Zn shows an initial discharge platform of 1.33 V and an initial charge platform of 1.96 V, performing a small overpotential. What's more, the porous Zn exhibits a much longer cycle life than commercial Zn foil. Our work will not only shed light on the design and synthesis of other porous metal materials, but also further promote the development of Zn-based battery electrochemistry.

The development of economical and efficient platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is considered the most promising strategy for the widespread application of clean energy conversion devices. Herein, Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon carriers, CoCN(CDs-X), were constructed by pyrolyzing carbon dots (CDs) doped ZIF-67 and further used to anchor Pt to prepare low Pt loading catalysts, PtCoCN(CDs-X). The introduction of CDs not only improves the conductivity for efficient electron transfer, but also regulates the interaction between Pt and the CoCN(CDs-X) support and alleviates the oxidation of Pt. The optimized PtCoCN(CDs-0.10) displays decent ORR behavior with onset and half-wave potentials of 0.95 V and 0.83 V, respectively, in alkaline media and superior catalytic stability and methanol tolerance. While employing PtCoCN(CDs-0.10) as a cathode catalyst for an as-assembled zinc–air battery (ZAB), it delivers an excellent power density of 194.2 mW cm−2 and exceptional operation stability, which is indicated by a voltage efficiency loss of only 7.7% after a long cycle life of 100 h, demonstrating its great potential applications.
