Crosslinked poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) with a macromolecular crosslinker for anion exchange membrane fuel cells

Wangting Lu,Zhi-Gang Shao,Geng Zhang,Yun Zhao,Baolian Yi

A new material based on crosslinked poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC) with a macromolecular crosslinker is synthesized and employed as the membrane for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). PVBC is used as the hydroxide conducting polymers , while poly(vinyl acetal) (PVAc) containing dimethylamino groups plays the role as macromolecular crosslinker and the supporting matrix simultaneously. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectra and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectra prove successful crosslinking between PVBC and PVAc. The crosslinked membrane shows hydroxide conductivity larger than 0.01 S cm −1 at room temperature , and the swelling by water at elevated temperature is suppressed. The H 2 /O 2 AEMFC using the crosslinked membrane shows a peak power density ( P max ) of 124.7 mW cm −2 at 40 °C, and the decrease of the open circuit voltage (OCV) of the fuel cell is negligible under continuous OCV conditions for 120 h. All the results indicate that the crosslinking with a macromolecular crosslinker may be a promising strategy to fabricate anion exchange membrane for the application in the AEMFCs.

Implanting oxophilic metal in PtRu nanowires for hydrogen oxidation catalysis

Huang Zhongliang,Hu Shengnan,Sun Mingzi,Xu Yong,Liu Shangheng,Ren Renjie,Zhuang Lin,Chan Ting-Shan,Hu Zhiwei,Ding Tianyi,Zhou Jing,Liu Liangbin,Wang Mingmin,Huang Yu-Cheng,Tian Na,Bu Lingzheng,Huang Bolong,Huang Xiaoqing

Bimetallic PtRu are promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen oxidation reaction in anion exchange membrane fuel cell, where the activity and stability are still unsatisfying. Here, PtRu nanowires were implanted with a series of oxophilic metal atoms (named as i-M-PR), significantly enhancing alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity and stability. With the dual doping of In and Zn atoms, the i-ZnIn-PR/C shows mass activity of 10.2 A mg Pt+Ru −1 at 50 mV, largely surpassing that of commercial Pt/C (0.27 A mg Pt −1 ) and PtRu/C (1.24 A mg Pt+Ru −1 ). More importantly, the peak power density and specific power density are as high as 1.84 W cm −2 and 18.4 W mg Pt+Ru −1 with a low loading (0.1 mg cm −2 ) anion exchange membrane fuel cell. Advanced experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations collectively suggest that dual doping with In and Zn atoms optimizes the binding strengths of intermediates and promotes CO oxidation, enhancing the HOR performances. This work deepens the understanding of developing novel alloy catalysts, which will attract immediate interest in materials, chemistry, energy and beyond.

Built-in electric field-driven electron transfer behavior at Ru-RuP2 heterointerface fosters efficient and CO-resilient alkaline hydrogen oxidation

Yi Liu,Lianrui Cheng,Shuqing Zhou,Chenggong Niu,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Exploiting a cost-effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) with high-performance and CO poisoning resistance is essential for the widespread application of alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, we craft a unique Ru-RuP 2 heterostructure within hollow mesoporous carbon sphere (Ru-RuP 2 @C) using phosphide-controlled phase-transition approach. Benefiting from the interfacial electron transfer from RuP 2 to Ru, the Ru-RuP 2 @C electrocatalyst exhibits impressive HOR performance with a mass activity of 2.87 mA μ g Ru − 1 . Notably, Ru-RuP 2 @C demonstrates strong tolerance to 1000 ppm CO, a capability lacking in PtRu/C and Pt/C. When serves as an anode catalyst for AEMFC, it achieves a peak power density of 521 mW cm −2 , comparable to Pt/C. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the built-in electric field, resulting from work function differences, creates an asymmetric charge distribution that modulates the d -band center of Ru-RuP 2 @C. This optimizes the adsorption strength of hydrogen and hydroxide intermediates, thereby accelerating HOR catalytic kinetics.

Tailoring Interfacial Charge Transfer of Epitaxially Grown Ir Clusters for Boosting Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Dan-Qing Liu,Zhouxin Luo,Bingxing Zhang,Guoqiang Zhao,Wei Guo,Jian Chen,Mingxia Gao,Yongfeng Liu,Hongge Pan,Wenping Sun

The sluggish kinetics of hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is one of the critical challenges for anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, we report epitaxial growth of Ir nanoclusters (<2 nm) on a MoS 2 surface (Ir/MoS 2 ) and optimize the alkaline HOR activity via tailoring interfacial charge transfer between Ir clusters and MoS 2 . The electron transfer from MoS 2 to Ir clusters can effectively prevent the oxidation of Ir clusters, which is not the case for carbon-supported Ir nanoclusters (Ir/C) synthesized using the same method. Moreover, the HOR performance of the Ir/MoS 2 can be further optimized by tuning the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) via a precise annealing treatment. A substantial exchange current density of 1.28 mA cm ECSA −2 is achieved in the alkaline medium, which is ∼10 times over that of Ir/C. The HOR mass-specific activity of Ir/MoS 2 heterostructure is as high as 182 mA mg Ir −1 . The experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that the significant improved HOR activity is attributed to the decreased HBE, which highlights epitaxial growth is an effective way for boosting catalytic activity of heterostructured catalysts.

Co(CN)3 catalysts with well-defined coordination structure for the oxygen reduction reaction

Sun Kai,Dong Juncai,Sun Hao,Wang Xingdong,Fang Jinjie,Zhuang Zhongbin,Tian Shubo,Sun Xiaoming

Metal-nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts are promising platinum group metals alternatives for fuel cell cathodes; however, their randomly formed, unpredictable coordinations complicate any structure–property investigation and lead to low active site density. Here we achieve dense and well-defined cobalt sites on the surfaces of Co(CN) 3 microcrystals, which are identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In situ infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations elucidate that the high oxygen reduction reaction performance (half-wave potential is 0.90 V versus RHE) of the cubic Co(CN) 3 is due to its tailored coordination environment that optimizes *OH desorption. The cyanide linkage with minimized spacing between cobalt atoms maximizes active sites’ spatial density, which boosts the anion-exchange membrane fuel cell peak power density to 1.67 W cm −2 . The microcrystals with well-defined coordination structures can be used as Co-N-C analogues for their structure–property relationship investigations.

Optimum hydrogen binding energy at the atomic-level interfaces of Rh atoms/ultrasmall Rh nanoparticles for boosting hydrogen electrocatalysis

Wuyi Feng,Jiantao Fu,Xinye Zheng,Wei Zhu,Zhongbin Zhuang,Di Zhao,Jiatao Zhang

Optimizing the intrinsic hydrogen binding energy at atomic-level interfaces is beneficial and challenging for hydrogen electrocatalysis to improve the mass activity of platinum-group metal. Here, we develop a bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalyst featuring atomically dispersed Rh-N 4 sites alongside ultrasmall Rh nanoparticles (Rh SA+NP /NC). For the hydroxide oxidation reaction, the mass activity (9.14 A mg Rh −1 ) of Rh SA+NP /NC is 101 times that of commercial Pt/C. For the hydrogen evolution reaction, the overpotential is merely 14 mV at an extremely low Rh loading (1.91 μg cm −2 ). The anion-exchange membrane fuel cell and anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer equipped with Rh SA+NP /NC achieve a high peak power density (25.7 W mg Rh −1 ) and a low cell voltage (1.77 V at 1 A cm −2 ), respectively. Experimental and computational results indicate that the atomic-level interface formed by Rh single atoms and nanoparticles optimizes the adsorption behavior of active species and accelerates the hydrogen conversion kinetics. This study designs cost-effective hydrogen electrocatalysts through atomic-level interface engineering, providing a feasible strategy for accelerating the realization of a sustainable hydrogen circular economy.

Fine adjustment of catalyst agglomerate for the controllable construction of Co/Fe–N–C catalyst layers

Yabiao Pei,Weikang Zhu,Runfei Yue,Jie Yao,Xin Liu,Lianqin Wang,Junfeng Zhang,Yan Yin,Michael D. Guiver

Adjusting catalyst/ionomer agglomerate is crucial to a high-performance catalyst layer (CL), particularly for non-precious metal catalysts . As a sacrificial component, the solvent plays a vital role during the CL formation process and resulting microstructure, determining the performance of the anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, solvent mixtures of isopropanol (IPA) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) are studied for the controllable construction of the Co/Fe–N–C CL. The results indicate that the aggregate state of the ionomers and catalysts and the final CL microstructure strongly depend on the ratio of IPA and THF. The CL prepared with IPA: THF = 1:2 (v/v) shows a homogeneous distribution of Co/Fe–N–C catalysts, embedded in the ionomer matrix, due to the fast volatilization and low viscosity of the catalyst ink. The Co/Fe–N–C CL with high moisture adsorption behavior and retention ability results in a high performance AEMFC with peak power density of 545.3 mW cm −2 at 80 °C. The obtained results can guide the rational design of microstructure in non-precious metal CLs for high-performance AEMFCs.

Building a Heterostructure between Ni Nanoparticles and Ni3Mo3N to Enhance the Activity of the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction in Alkaline Medium

Yang Peng,Churong Huang,Meiling Pan,Xin Yue,Shaoming Huang

The development of efficient nonprecious metal catalysts for the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalyst in alkaline anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) is of great significance. Nickel-based catalysts are considered to be promising HOR catalysts. Here, we report the interfacial engineering of reduced graphene oxide-supported Ni and Ni–Mo bimetallic nitrides (Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO), which exhibit excellent catalytic activity of alkaline HOR. The electron transfer from Ni to Ni3Mo3N has been regulated to tune the electronic structure. Due to the interface effect between Ni and Ni3Mo3N, Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO exhibits enhanced HOR activity, with a high current density of 2.65 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 50 mV. Additionally, it demonstrates higher exchange current density (j0, 3.21 mA cm–2) and kinetic current density (jk, 10.35 mA cm–2), indicating fast kinetics and high intrinsic activity of Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO. Furthermore, detailed characterization results illustrate that due to the rational adsorption of hydrogen and hydroxyl groups by Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO, it possesses significant activity and durability. These research findings are of great importance for the development of more efficient alkaline HOR catalysts to promote the application of alkaline AEMFCs.
